Weigh-in day--

This morning I weighed 135.5 but more importantly.... I tried on my little jeans last night and THEY BUTTONED!  haha it might be because they stretched due to the numerous times I've tried to put them on... but still...  Feels like a victory to me!  haha my legs looked like little sausages squished in there so if I want to wear them in public I still have some work to do toning-wise.  Just want to give a big THANK YOU to ayishaissa-- the toning exercises you suggested are totally working!

Anyway, good luck everyone!!  Happy Friday!!

I've had the same question since I joined CC...  I literally do nothing but sit at a desk all day, but I run 3-5 miles every morning, 4-5 times a week.  If you're asking this question based on how many cals you should be eating, I recommend checking out these links for more specific answers on how many cals you burn:

I hope it helps!

I can say without hesitation that my mother has influenced my "lifestyle change".  My mother isn't extremely overweight, but she is very self-conscious about her weight and yet doesn't do much to fix it.  I don't want to be that person that knows I can change, but won't.  I feel like if I keep up my healthy eating and exercising, it might influence her to do the same.

welcome audrey and ayishaissa!!

And happy Friday everyone!!

So I've stepped back to the scale right smack back where I started at 138.  But I feel okay about it because I think it looks like a better 138 than where I started.  Maybe.  Maybe it's just wishful thinking.  I've been really really good the last couple days with what I'm eating so I'm hoping to bring it into the weekend.  I'll be at the mountain snowboarding all weekend, which makes me want comfort food, but I WILL resist excessive amounts.  The past few weekends have been bad for that.

My doctor called me this week and apparently I'm anemic... I know its fairly common for young women, but I started taking the women's one-a-day multi-vitamin (with iron) and purposely eating iron-rich foods since January, so I'm a little perplexed as to where this came from.  Could it be from exercising a lot?  If anyone can offer some insight, just let me know!

Anyway-- I hope weigh-in day goes well!!  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

and ayishaissa-- I'm totally interested in a challenge!  What'd you have in mind?

First of all, I have to say I loove the responses for this thread! I agree with every post.  Except maybe those that say "just eat them in moderation"... I agree with what you're saying, but clearly you do not have my problem.

Anyway, the fermentation thing makes sense.  The day I posted this topic I ate 5 bars over the course of the day and this might be a lot of information, but I was unbelievably gassy.  Embarrassingly so.  That's probably the price I pay for having 5 instead of 1.  Lesson learned.  I'm eating one right now... hopefully the first and last of the day.  I don't know about you, but I'm trying to cut back on the calories ;)

I Hope everyone is still enjoying their "glorified candy bars"... at least it's not an unglorified candy bar!  And if you are trying to quit, I wish you the best of luck!

haha I stillll haven't tried the new DVD... I think that'll be this Sunday's activity instead of going to the gym.  I'm kind of thinking I might have wasted my money because I feel silly jumping around in front of the TV.... maybe that'll change?

So last weekend started a week of crazy cravings for me... I decided it might just be best to give in because I felt like I was just hungry and miserable all the time, so I just made sure my burn meter and food meter were about the same... and I loved it.  I ran 5 miles at the gym every day this week, plus a half hour on the elliptical, so I definitely feel like I deserve the weekend off even though I ate like a pig.  That, and I feel like the cravings are done and all I really want now is veggies.  I'm going to try and drop my cals back down this week so hopefully then I'll see some improvement before next Fri.

I think my decisions this week were definitely for the best.  I feel like it prevented some serious bingeing.  I'm sure the gain wasn't too bad, and now I'm more motivated to be extra healthy next week.  So goal for this week: drop the calories back down and get better nutrition grades for the week!

Katalina- how much are you trying to lose before spring break?  Are you concentrating more on the actual weight loss or just some toning?

Niamht- where'd ya go?  I hope you're keeping up with your working-out goals!!

ah the dreaded weigh in day!

So I've been good this week in that I have stayed off the scale, but mostly just because I really don't want to see an increase in pounds.  It seems like the last week my cravings have just been going nuts, so I decided it would just be best to give in and just make sure by food meter is about equal to my burn meter (both about 2500 cals).  I've really enjoyed this past week because my workouts were great- I ran 5 miles every day this week plus my usual 1/2 hour on the elliptical.  My knees got a bit sore today, so I am looking forward to a day off tomorrow and Sunday!  And I'm also happy because the crazy cravings are starting to subside.  I'm hoping the extra running this week might help me shed some inches, but I haven't noticed anything yet so maybe if I bring my cals back down next week then hopefully there will be improvement.

Congrats to dizzzy for losing weight this week!

I know a lot of people look like they're dreading this weigh in, so I wish everybody the best of luck!!

I 2nd almost everything, with an emphasis on faneuil hall/quincy market, the freedom trail, the MFA, and newbury street if you like to shop (or window shop-- it's generally expensive).  If you're trying to get around in Boston, I recommend taking the T because driving gets really confusing (detours and directional signs literally pop out of nowhere) and parking can be quite expensive.  Boston isn't huge so walking isn't bad.  I'm pretty sure duck tours aren't open in february.  The aquarium and science museum will probably be crowded because of school vacation, but I think the kiddos go back to school on Monday.  haha and I personally would like to completely discourage the Christmas Tree shop...  it's pretty cheap in both senses of the word so I say really not worth the drive.  Salem might be worth a drive tho-- I'm not familiar with the museums up there but I know they have a bunch of them!

Fitness Do you have a story that can help motivate me to keep running? Feb 19 2009
21:22 (UTC)

No way I can beat foreverme24's story, but I too am someone who used to hate running.  I would go through spurts where I would try to run,  start out getting side stitches, then within a couple weeks I could work past them, but then I would go on vacation or something where I wouldn't work out for a while.  Then it is sooo hard to get started again because you end up back where you started with the side stitches and everything.  Anyway, I read somewhere that you only really start back tracking after a week of not working out (no idea if that's true...).  When I started exercising regularly in September, even if I was having an off week, I forced myself to work out at least once.  And as someone who detested running, I would go on the elliptical so I could watch TV at the same time.  About a month ago, I noticed that I was no longer working up a sweat on the elliptical.  I knew how tough running was for me, so I figured if I wanted to get some good sweat time in, I could hop on the treadmill for 20 minutes then be done.  I think all that time spent on the elliptical really worked up my stamina, because when I jumped on that treadmill, I was better than I could ever remember.  Once I saw that improvement, I was pumped.  I never thought I had the stamina to be a runner. 20 minutes on the treadmill on random days turned into 30, 40, and this week I'm up to 50 minutes at 6mph.  I remember being so jealous of people who said they could run 5 miles in a day, and now I'm right there with them.  I agree with everyone who says it is completely mental.  Running can be boring, but think about the time you spend waiting in a doctor's office, or in line, or driving in a car-- it's like you hit a point where you stop whining in your head about how long it is taking and you just accept it.  If you're just starting to run, I think the best thing is to just force yourself to do SOMETHING, aaanything, even on days when you're just not feeling it.  Even if it is just walking.  It helps build that mental stamina, and it keeps you from back tracking (which was the most discouraging part for me).

ughhhh yeah this weekend has been a total bust for me!  I've had an endless supply of chocolate and brownies, plus I've made some bad decisions by way of pizza, beer, and fried food.  I've definitely eaten wayyy too many calories.  I just ate about a cup of M&Ms and now I feel sick.  I think I just over did it because I was so good at the end of the week--  I felt great because I did really well at the gym, I bought a strength training/toning dvd (haven't tried it yet tho... I'll let you know how it turns out!), and I think I found the right amount of calories that I should be eating.  Good eating and working my butt off at the gym starts again tomorrow...

Katalina- I'm sure we can both recover from this weekend!  A spring break trip is such a great motivator-- just find a binkini you like and keep trying it on to keep up the motivation!

Niamht- it sounds like your binge on 2/12 wasn't too bad... at least it was all pretty healthy!  Maybe getting a bit of exercise this week will make you feel better!  Endorphins are great :)

First of all, congrats dplatzer on hitting 148!  That must have felt great!

Dizzzy- Lately I've been considering training for a marathon, but I'm not sure I'd actually be able to do it... I don't think I have the mental stamina.  Good for you!!

Looks like you're maintaining Carolally- if I finally get down to where I want to be, I have a feeling that's going to be the toughest part to get started... I feel like it takes a lot of tweeking.  It looks like you're getting the hang of it!

I've decided to take a different route and stop weighing myself for a while so I don't get frustrated at this weight plateau thing...

On a similar note, I went to the dr yesterday for an annual physical and apparently, switching my birth control pill 2 weeks ago has made me bloated.  haha I must have sounded like an idiot, because I asked her why my lower abdomen was swollen.  I guess I've never really been bloated!  Anyway, the changing of the pill has coincided exactly with my weight plateau, so does anyone know if this bloating means I'm retaining water and therefore plateau-ing?  I didn't think of this at the time so I didn't get to ask the doc.....

Hey dizzzy!

I think your method of eating lighter during the week and heavier on the weekends will work just fine... I feel like that's how it works out for most people- weekends are tough to be good!  Just keep track of your daily deficits and how fast you're losing then tweek it if you need to :)  Good luck!  Let me know how you do!

katalina- When I started counting calories, I went from 138-133 in 2 weeks with a noticeable change in my weight every day.  Then my weight went up, then back down a smidge, now I've been stuck at 135.  I keep getting on the scale every day hoping for it to go back down, but it's not moving at all.  I think the hope that it was going to change overnight was my lofty daily goal!  (Starting today I'm not weighing myself anymore!  At least, not for a while)

Good ideas for mini-goals.  I also would like to throw out there that if anyone accomplishes any type of feat this week, brag about it!  When I hear about other people resisting temptation or rocking at the gym, I get motivated to do the same!

So I think my mini goal is to be able to stay running on the treadmill for a full 45 minutes in the next week.  I can do it from time to time, but around the 30-40 minute mark I tend to get overwhelmed and walk.  I'm really going to try and push it!

Finally, does anyone have any good toning exercises for the butt and/or inner thigh region?  That's really my problem area and I'm terrible about doing strength training exercises so I need a push to do that....

Sweet potatoes are really good comfort food if you like them.  haha actually, I never liked them until I read a book where the main character was eating them all the time for comfort food (The Power of One... good book)... a tad weird I know.  They have a good amount of cals, but they're really nutritious!

Mellisaann-- I'm right there with you... sooo frustrated, working out like a mad woman, not seeing results, and afraid to up my calorie intake.  Trying not to go nuts over it.  It's really tough though!  I'm trying to log some type of loss by Friday, because the chocolate on Valentine's day is going to be the end of me.  I'm not sure how motivating this message is going to be because I too am stuck, but you're not alone!  Knowing you're also nervous to up your calorie intake makes me feel a little more inclined to say that we just need to do it.

My cals were low yesterday, making todays workout pretty much non-existent, so today I'm going to concentrate on getting at least 1600 calories just so I can work out hard tomorrow!  That's only a 100 cal deficit, but hopefully it'll help!

Hello again everyone!

I thought I'd weigh in just so I make it a habit... 135 again today.  I'm really really going to try not to weigh myself until next friday, but come monday i know I'm going to be curious about what damage occurred over the weekend.

Thanks Meggo for the compliment about the picture :)  I like that one even though it's kind of old... I've been meaning to post some more recent pictures, but I am lazy.  I know what you mean about tall women seeming rare everywhere, but I noticed a huge difference between Boston and the upper midwest--  I went to school in Wisconsin, and tall women were significantly more common.  It made all my friends from home seem like midgets!  I think its the scandinavian genes or something.

Okie- I also can't believe you only gained a pound and a half on vacation!  Good job!  haha I gained more than that last weekend alone!

Congrats on your new low, skook!  Keep it up!

I wish everyone luck this week!  It sounds like people are making great progress, and I wish you this best! Stay motivated!

Weight Loss Is it bad that most of my calories come from dinner? Feb 06 2009

Thanks everyone for your responses!

miserybabe- keep me posted about what happens with your 6 daily meals thing... I know that's supposed to be better for you, but I don't really have to motivation to actually try it.  However, if you see significant difference, I might have to consider changing my ways.

MJ- I googled the warrior diet and came across these websites:

http://www.everydiet.org/diet/warrior-diet

http://www.cbass.com/warrior_diet.htm

Definitely helpful, but this looks like it's more concerned with fasting during the day, and I think I'm consuming too many calories to be considered "fasting".

Bubbasgirl- I pretty much stick to high intensity cardio in the morning- like elliptical or treadmill.  You can burn that many calories in an hour, but you have to be in pretty good shape.  Just as an example, I worked out for about an hour this morning on a treadmill: 2% incline, 6mph, for 45minutes, followed by 15 minutes of walking and the calorie counter on the machine said about 800 cals (I tend to think of that as 700 because I don't know how accurate those things are... I'm trying not to overestimate).  I definitely had to work up to this point though... I remember really struggling trying to do 30 minutes with no incline at a slower pace several months ago.

Thanks again for the input!

Hi Everyone!

So I noticed this thread a while ago and have been reading it from time to time and I feel like a creeper not having introduced myself.

I'm 22 years old, 5'10.5" and currently weighing in at about 135lbs.  I'm a small build and not curvy in the least.  When I gain weight it all goes to my legs, which I absolutely hate.  I've established my goal weight to be 128, but I really just want to slim down my lower body... I'm not as concerned with the actual weight loss.  I'm primarily on CC to make sure I'm getting proper nutrition from the foods I eat, and to keep me motivated in my workouts.  That, and I like to see other people's success.

I love this thread.  First of all, because I'm from Boston and tall women are a rarity here.  Also, because none of my friends understand that I can gain or lose over 10lbs and stay the same dress size.  My weight has fluctuated by 20lbs, and I can still wear the same jeans.  Good if you're gaining weight, frustrating if you're trying to lose.

Random question, but I'm curious and I want to ask fellow tall women... what are your thoughts on heels?  Shoe shopping is supposed to be comforting because weights go up and down, but shoe sizes stay the same-- but I get so frustrated shoe shopping!  All the cute heels I want to buy, I don't, because I know that it is a rare occasion when I will wear even a 3" heel.  So do you ladies embrace your height?  What's the highest heel you own and when do you wear them?

Desire: To not get overwhelmed by my current search for a new job.

Gratitude: For my boyfriend, who has remained supportive and loving while I've been a bit depressed the past few days.

I've also got the cellulite problem, mostly on the back of my upper thighs.  I'm totally determined to get rid of it.  I've started doing strength yoga for the buns, hips, and thighs 5 days a week for about 2 weeks and I think it might be disappearing... i guess at this point it could be wishful thinking... I just need to stay motivated!

I think you can totally do it, but you really have to change your habits.  Granted, I have no idea what your habits are, but so much about losing weight is mental.  In high school I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted and I didn't gain a pound.  But as I've gotten older, I just can't do those things without tipping the scale.  So I just have to tell myself that even though I could probably fit a whole large pizza into my stomach at any given time, I should eat a large salad and opt for a single slice.  Whatever your habits are now, start by changing them just a little bit at a time, because no one wants to stick to a diet where they feel deprived.  Just choose things in moderation, and stay active.  I know that I tend to eat more on days when I’m bored, so that staying active part is key for me!

Ok everyone relax.

It's tough to strive for a "healthy weight" when all these gorgeous celebrities are so skinny and worshiped.  If they tried to calculate their weight on this website, every one of them would be underweight.  But you can be classified as "underweight" by this website and many others simply because they can't factor in your genetic build.  These websites aren't perfect.

On a different note, I'm pretty sure Samantha Ronson does a lot of drugs and will probably shrivel up die before the age of 40.  And I read somewhere that Victoria Beckham's favorite food is toast.  Personally, I don't want to live like that. And as skinny as Courtney Cox is, I've read about her exercise routine and it seems like she would need more than 1200 calories to stay healthy while exercising that much.  I'm sure these women are genetically disposed to being thin, but they're not maintaining a healthy ideal.  I bet they could all eat a hell of a lot more and still be thin and beautiful.
