That's awesome!  Congrats!  It gives me hope for myself tomorrow night.  Going to dinner with 4 other couples to my favorite Italian restuarant and I'm already nervous.

So great job!  Keep it up!

Ok, I am a runner too and just had to post a comment because reading this thread is what got me off my butt this morning.

I got up early and was reading CC and drinking my coffee.  I normally procrastinate as long as possible before exercising in the morning but reading this thread got me moving.

Knowing there was a high possibility it was going to rain this morning, I headed to the gym to jump on a treadmill.  Bummer that they were all filled with some fitness class but I did hop on an elliptical for an hour.

So....Thanks for the motivation!  It felt great to get moving earlier that usual (I'll now try and turn this into a habit) and I didn't even let myself post this comment until I go back from the gym!
Fitness running question! Feb 01 2007

exactly what you said, to concentrate on form.  I know when I start kicking up the speed on the treadmill it's harder to focus on form because you're just trying to keep up with the belt moving under your feet.

Unlike when you are running outside and you speed up, your body will sort of naturally adjust you (slow you down slightly) but you might not notice the slight slow down because the speed is not staring at you on the treadmill screen.  I found out how much variation there really is in my own natural pace by wearing a GPS watch which tracks your pace.  So on a treadmill, you are at a forced pace, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it makes it hard for our bodies to make those natural adjustments because that belt is moving under us.

Good luck!  And you are also right about the sprints - great weight lost boost - although the running alone will probably do the trick!! ;o)

I am a runner too.  You certainly could be running on your toes.  You definitely want a stride that is heal through toe.  And it's good that you have a little incline on the treadmill - otherwise the machine propels you too much at 0% incline.

You might want to consider going to an atheltic store that specializes in running gear, shoes, etc.  Some place with knowledge staff (preferrably some runners on staff).  Anyway, have them make sure you have the right shoes (at least 1/2 size bigger than what you normally wear) and that it fits well through the narrow part of your foot and your heel.  Who knows, your foot may be positioned oddly or shoes not quite right which could cause your calves to cramp.

Okay, my last suggestion...may do your next run slower, stay at 6mph - you are moving pretty quick.

Keep up the running though!  It's a great exercise you don't have to pay for - just strap on some shoes and hit the pavement!

Good luck!

I agree with txgirlygirl.  Water weight fluctuation can be pretty dramatic.  And if you are actually drinking less, your body could be holding on to it even more.  When I am feeling bloated (especially around that time of the month), if I make a conscious effort to actually drink MORE water, it helps flush out some of the retention.

So drink up!

Oh, and you may have eaten more sodium and that's helping you retain it too!

Don't be discouraged and congrats on your 16lbs!

Sounds like a great idea!  I have to travel for work in February so it would be great to have something to focus on and keep me motivated.

kristenring,

Yes, you are not alone.  And I do the very same thing - great for a week then total melt down.  And I also understand not knowing the exact trigger because sometimes it can start with just wanting some almonds...and the downward spiral begins.  It's weird because some days, many days, I can have unbelieveable control and then well, you know.

Also, I am also very active/athletic, 36F yr old with 10 pounds that torment me (and I do mean torment).  So, I say all that to say if you'd like a buddy, where we could help eachother be accountable and do something different, react different when the binge is hitting, let me know.

I see that you are in NC.  My sister, who is very dear to me, lives in Raleigh.  I'm in TX (currently being tormented by the weather! sabotaging my efforts to go outside for a run!).

I will post my email in my profile if you'd like email directly and I'm going to add you to my "friends" list.

Hope this  post finds you doing better!  Keep your chin up!

basementgirl, tasha, christanak74,

Thought I'd let you guys know (you probably already do know this, but I just discovered it) that you can read the journals of those you've marked as friends.  It's been very helpful for me and I've started journalling on cc now instead of separately.

basementgirl, thanks for the tip on the book. I will take a look.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Weight Loss 5'5 people out there... what is your goal weight?? Jan 29 2007

I am 5'4'' and my goal weight is 115. That's just what I feel comfortable at and of course it depends on your frame as well.  I have a small frame so 10 pounds on me is 20 pounds on someone bigger framed or taller.

I am shocked to read how many people (like me) are struggling with a stubborn 10-15 pounds (creeping on as I get older and not coming off so easy).  Makes feel like I'm not alone as I feel.

yes, yes, yes.  That is where I am right now.  My period was heading into town and my rational brain took a vacation.  Cravings hits, and I went on a carb binge. Which of course made the bloating even worse than it already was.  I definitely need to do more of the suggestions mentioned (drink lots of water and watch salt intake) and see how that works.  Isn't calcium supposed to help the symptoms as well (1200mg)?  I've been really inconsistent with my vitamins so may be a good motivation to be more diligent.

Okay, all that to say, yes, I'm a victim of the monthly torture. Ugh.

Yes, I bet there are many more bingers than we think...

Well, I just typed out everything I ate yesterday to make it more of an impact and sheesh, no wonder I felt bad.  But today is a new day, a new day not to respond to life with food or to just eat something because I want it, or feel like I deserve it.  I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted from the struggle.  What's strange is the binge thing has been around only for the last couple of years (which really isn't too surprising considering I got divorced 3 yrs ago and then was in a really bad relationship after that).  But it's been the worst the past 8 months or so.

Well, I hope no one gets tired of my posts because I'm going to come here often for support and to vent when I feel like I'm getting to that place where I want to binge.

Tasha,

I just started (again) on cc today.  I would love to chat and exchange emails on the road to success.  Congrats on your 2.5 pounds!

I am an occasional binger so you'll hear some of that struggle and deadlocked at 7-10 pounds that won't come off.  It's not that I'm shooting for the wrong weight, it's that I give in to stress, sadness, frustration, etc, with food. So I lose 3, gain 4, and so on and so on.

What are your goals? What type of exercise do you like to do?

Anyway, feel free to add me as a friend, I'll add you to my list.

Have a good night!

I will definitely check here and post here frequently as well.  Tomorrow is a new day and a day to not respond to everything with food.  Basementgirl, I'd like to add you to my friends list for giving and getting support.

Sheesh, life is too short to spend so much of our energy on this struggle - and food is to be enjoyed (in moderation) not feared!

Hope you both (christinak74 and basementgirl) have a good night!  Hope to see a successful day from one of use posted soon!

christinak74,

absolutely add me to your friends list.  No one really knows how much I struggle with these issues so it will be nice to actually be completely open about it and...hopefully overcome the same crippling struggles.  I've actually been reading posts for about the last hour and a half (after a binge and feeling already bloated from my period!) and I'm amazed at how many people struggle with this.  I'd definitely like to eventually be the poster girl for overcoming bingeing and mindless eating!

Thanks for the reply!

basementgirl,

I can definitely relate.  I do really well for a week or two and then off the wagon I fall.  Sometimes it's caused by my period, sometimes boredom, frustration, any reason really.  I eat really healthy and then I eat twice as many almonds or something goofy like that, and that sets me off.

And it's amazing to me that some many of us struggle with this yet look at the "cultural" ideal out there of what we should look like?  It's no wonder we binge...sorry, shouldn't get on my soap box here.

Anyway, I too am looking to connect with others that have these same struggles that undermine our success (I also occasionally use laxatives - although I think I'm at 2 weeks without any - something to be happy about I guess!).

Good luck!  I don't know the recipe for success with this one other than every day is a new day.
