Motivation Walking Off the Weight 2 Sep 11 2007

Hello fellow walkers.  I have discovered new walking motivation after dealing with heat, humidity, ferocious dogs, and rain......I have found a way to get my walking done inside in the glorious AC.  No, I do not have a treadmill because I can't afford one right now.  However, I have some "Walking for fitness" videos by instructor Leslie Sandsone.  I know it doesn't sound like much of a challenge but I can say from experience on treadmills and walking outside that an hour with Leslie is like 2 hours any other way.  It's not just walking in place, it's side steps, kicks, knee lifts, hand weights, and lots of other variations to just your normal every day walk.  I really can work up a sweat and get my heart rate up with her videos.  Anyone else use her videos?
Weight Loss What weight is size 7? Jul 20 2007

Well, first of all, size 7 is a junior size so for those of you who shop in the juniors department would wear a size 7.  I however wore a size 6 when I was 156 lbs because I was a weight lifter.  Muscle mass weighs alot more than fat.  Before I started lifting, I weighed 133 and I was a size 10.  After lifting regularly, I put on 22 lbs and dropped 2 sizes.

I'm glad someone else thinks it's not a wimpy workout!  I am going to do the 3 mile with hand weights again tonight!

cccc2007........

Take it from someone who is OCD............that's OCD.  Try this one...my closet is color coded and I won't hang a red shirt on a pink hanger because they clash.  If my husband folds towels, I will unfold the ones that aren't right and fold them the right way.  My cd's and movies are all alphabetized, my labels in the pantry all have to be facing out and lined up by type just like in the grocery store.  Sometimes I'm envied because I'm so organized but sometimes I'm criticized because I'm told I'm too anal about things.  I just know I sleep good at night knowing that things are organized, balanced, and clean.

Another great thing about soymilk is the shelf life is alot longer than regular milk.  You can let a carton of Silk sit in the fridge for 2 weeks and it's still good!  The first kind I tried was lite vanilla 8th Continent and I said I didn't like soymilk.  Then I tried lite vanilla Silk and it is so much better than the other!

It seems everywhere you go these days, the portions are double or even triple what it should be for one person.  Don't get depressed about how many calories are in one dish, just eat half of it.  Split it with someone or box the rest up.  Order a house salad to go with it or a ceasar salad without the dressing.  I carry my own salad dressing to a restaurant in a little tupperware container if I know I'll have to order a salad to compliment my "half dish" that I'll be ordering.  Don't let eating out kill your calorie counting, just plan ahead, tell yourself, "I'm going to order this" and don't even look at the menu..............unless of course you have no idea what they serve.  Pretty soon, you'll be so good at your calorie counting that you won't have to actually count every meal because sometimes you just can't, but you will know what is a healthy choice and what is not a healthy choice and you know what is a good portion size and what is not a good portion size.

Also, you may be able to lift quite heavy on the machines but free weights is a totally different world.  The machines guide your movements and the free weights rely on you and your stabilizer muscles to guide the movements.  You will be very sore after using free weights but the payoff is HUGE!  Your body will become sculpted very quickly if you keep it up.  For me, it was very addicting.  I seriously considered quitting my accounting job to become a personal trainer.  Hopefully, you can become that passionate about it as well.

When I started lifting 6 years ago, I was clueless.  I purchased a book called "The Body Sculpting Bible For Women".  It has a section for each muscle group and has great illustrations for each and every exercise.   Also, I paid alot of attention to other people who were regular weight lifters and eventually partnered up with some old pros in the gym.  Don't pay for a personal trainer because you can educate yourself on technique using books and you can learn tricks from some of the regular weight lifters at your own gym.
Weight Loss More Weight Loss on Inactive Days? Jul 17 2007

When you say you lose on your days off from exercise, perhaps it's a result of the exercise you performed the day before.  Anyone who has ever lifted weights knows that you can get that "pumped" look immediately following a hard workout.  The blood flows to your muscles and eventually, it releases it and your muscles repair themselves and "shrink" to normal again.  I'm not an expert though so I know that's not the scientific explanation but all I'm saying is that if you work out one day, you don't immediately see the results or weight loss from it that very day.  So, don't think that you can just quit working out and you'll lose weight faster.  You may lose muscle and that will show on the scale as a loss but you should really be tracking your measurements and how your clothes fit and not ONLY what the scale says.  I weighed 156 lbs and I was a size 6 because I was a weight lifter.  Before that, I was a size 10 and 133 lbs.......bigger size, smaller weight.  So, work those muscles, they'll burn the fat for you.
Weight Loss Frustrated and Self Conscious... Jul 17 2007

I was a committed gym member for a good 6 years and my husband and I recently built a house in the "country" and I don't have the option of having a gym membership.....I live too far away from them.  Then I decided I would have to walk on my street for excercise and I had a bad episode with a dog trying to attack me.  Then I decided I needed to buy a treadmill and we can't afford it right now because we're paying for the new house and trying to furnish it.  Finally, I broke down and ordered an aerobics video off of Video on demand, which is kinda like pay-per-view but it's free.  I enjoyed the 30 minute aerobic video so much that I ended up doing 2 more immediately after that.  I have always said I didn't like any "instructor led" fitness but I realized that I never gave it a chance.  My favorite for cardio is actually a "walking for fitness" video.  I was skeptical at first, thinking, "how could walking in place take the place of walking for real?".  But, after I did it, I will say that it was more intense than walking a mile on the treadmill because they add kicks and knee lifts and side steps and even hand weights on the more advanced videos.  So.................to sum it up, get you a video and when you get good at it, get you another one.  The instructors really can be so motivating!
Weight Loss Wellbutrin? Jul 17 2007

I am taking wellbutrin xl but it was not prescribed for weight loss.  My doctor gave it to me because I have been overwhelmed with stress from work and building a house.  She did tell me that I might lose weight taking it because it might suppress my appetite and of course my thinking was..........alright!!!  But I haven't noticed that it is suppressing my appetite.  I haven't had any negative side effects from it yet but I haven't been put on a large dosage, only 150 mg.  I think most people take around 300 mg.  I have noticed that it has lowered my stress level and it seems to me that I'm not getting quite so overwhelmed with all of the decisions that go along with house building.

Soy crisps are a staple in my diet.  My favorite brand is Genisoy.  They are all about 100 to 110 calories per servings and soy protein is great for you.  They also make potatoe soy crisps which are the closest healthy alternative to chips.
Fitness Elliptical trainer Question.... Mar 24 2006

I actually love the elliptical machines, there's one in particular made by cybex called the "arc trainer", it's wonderful.  When I first started them several years ago, it took me a while to figure out that the movement actually felt more natural if you set the resistance higher.  I know that sounds like it would be harder but to me it made it easier because i felt like i was in control of the machine instead of it being in control of me.  So, if you try it again, put the resistance higher and see if it's easier for you.

I agree with what babyd said about doing less ab workout for a flatter stomach.  As women, our bodies store fat around our midsection  and it's almost impossible to get rid of.  If you have been doing ab workouts and it seems like you're getting bigger in your midsection, you might be because you're building those muscles up but it's just pushing the fat out more.  I've been working out for a long time and I am happiest with my belly when I have control over my diet and I do core excercises.  I never do sit-ups anymore because I like a flatter tummy and don't want to build up those muscles behind that fat that will always be there.

Mercedes, it is almost impossible to "spot reduce" especially just by doing cardio.  If you are worried about particular areas, like thighs and belly, you should be doing weight training to tone and shape.  Your body does not know that by you riding a bike, you want smaller thighs......you are doing cardio, your body just knows it's burning calories.  It might be different if you were doing some outdoor mountain biking, climbing hills and so forth but a stationary bike is mostly for cardio workouts.
