5'7, between 120-125 (usually 125...120 was more if I was sick or something) pounds. I still had some curves on me though, because I have really small bone structure. I was incredibly happy with that! |

| Health & Support | Antibiotics... | Feb 26 2009 00:20 (UTC) |

Thats a good point, but would it still apply to VERY minor infections? Its not even so big as a sinus infection.
I did a bit of research and found a few people who said antibiotics can irritate the intestine/stomach, making it feel like you are hungry. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm wondering if maybe thats it... |

Thanks for the advice and encouragement guys :) Its actually not so much the eating with family thats the problem - they are all quite healthy! Its I guess more going out with friends. I think I'm going to avoid the scale for a while, get myself back on track, and see where I land.
On the upside I definitely made healthier choices most of the time I was out, so thats an improvement.
oh, and that drink..the "Alexander" - sounds absolutely delicious. Might have to try it with skim milk as a desert drink one day! |

Original Post by gi-jane: I don't use anything in my tea either - no sugar, no milk, no artificial sweeteners! I drink a cup or two of tea every day. I drink coffee maybe 3 or 4 times a week, and when I do I either just take it with milk (i.e. I have a latte) or I allow myself the sugar. It's my treat :)
I try to avoid artificial sweeteneers elsewhere - when I buy yogurt I buy it plain and sweeten it with honey (tastes fantastic, and has about 20 calories/tsp). I don't really drink soft drinks (maybe 1 coke zero a week, usually not even that).
Then again I'm not a big fan of the taste of artificial sweeteners as a whole.... |

I agree, its a lot easier to keep weight off/stay healthy if you start eating healthier as a whole, instead of just eating smaller portions of crap food...
Some of my daily staples
- Weight watchers whole wheat bread - egg whites - plain yogurt - I usually mix in unsweetened frozen blueberries and granola - prawns - tenderized fast-fry steaks (very lean and very filling!) - peanut butter (which I know isn't that great, but that one tbsp over 2 pieces of toast in the morning gives me an extra dose of protein i really need) - avocado - homemade banana nut muffins (made with egg whites and minimal sugar, about 170 cal/pop) - bananas - edamame - all manner of tofu and veggie substitutes (for sausage cravings, etc) - lots of fresh fruit and veggies! |

| Weight Loss | Wearing a Heart Rate Monitor all day? | Feb 11 2009 06:19 (UTC) |

It's hard to say whether or not it would change things, and I doubt you could tell by wearing it for one day since your daily activities will never be the same. I've considered wearing mine to work, where I perform the same tasks all the time, just to get an idea of how much I am burning there. A day may be too long of a timespan. Besides, I'm sure it wouldn't vary too much, but you never know.

| Weight Loss | Why diet food "makes you fat" | Feb 08 2009 04:03 (UTC) |

While I agree that SOME people do enjoy the taste of diet coke, I think it would be incorrect to assume that everyone who you see do this has the same motivations as you. Forget he biggie size example. I have several friends who are all about diet foods like "lean cuisine" but then scarf down an entire pizza from Domino's, claiming that it's OK because they ate "healthy" for lunch. They then proceed to wonder why they aren't getting results.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against anyone ordering a coke zero or anything at Wendy's. When I'm hungover and find myself in fast food joints I always end up with a coke zero - just because I've overdone it on my fat intake for the day doesn't mean I have to overdo it on my sugar intake! I just don't believe that the majority of the people are thinking like this. |

I tend to agree with umneydarak. I don't think its thats peoples tastes necessarily change, though I'm sure some do have this happen. I for one, however, still enjoy sweet things - just in smaller portions. I think people use diet tools, such as low-cal/low-fat dressing, diet soda, and "Lean cuisine" style microwave meals, as a crutch for their entire weight loss program, neglecting to make the actual lifestyle changes required to loose weight (I can't count the number of times I've seen people in line at the movie theater, buying salty, butter loaded popcorn and a Coke Zero. I've seen people at Wendy's biggie size their meal and do the same thing). People think these small difference in calories made by will cancel out all the other crap they are shoving into their mouth. We all know this isn't possible... |

For 50 minutes of cardio this sounds about right. Depends on your size/weight/etc, as you know.
YOu can always try this one if you aren't sure.

clairesty thats AWESOME. I'm using that one.
I usually just say I'm trying to eat healthier. If you have anything like heart disease, etc. that runs in your family, you can use that as a justification (I usually do, and people tend to question you a lot less when you are trying to avoid heart diseases versus loose weight, not that the two aren't related, but people forget that...) |

I'll be finishing my poli sci degree in the next year or so (4th year at the moment) and am always interested in hearing peoples experiences and opinions of their school (assuming you are studying in Canada). |

I don't know about the American constitution, but I know the Canadian one applies to anyone in Canada (regardless of citizenship), but has few implications abroad - which I assume is what is happening to Khadr - since he isn't actually in the United States.
What I take more issue with is the fact that the Canadian government hasn't taken steps to enforce his rights under the Canadian constitution. |

| Weight Loss | Activities and the burn meter | Feb 03 2009 23:29 (UTC) |

I always count my drum sessions. I have a heart rate monitor that I've worn a few times while practicing, and have found that, due to the intensity with which I tend to play, I burn more calories/hour than my burn rate thing accounts for. If I was just playing lightly I wouldn't bother, but since it is quite a bit more (the burn rate thing says I am burning about 80/hr, and I can burn in excess of 150/hr while drumming because of increased heart rate, flailing, etc).
Again, it depends how intensely you are playing. I know when I gig I'm definitely burning WAY more than when I practice, and if I don't take that into account it screw with how many calories I should be eating in order to get the 500 cal deficit, and I end up really hungry and wondering why. |

Original Post by pgeorgian: Canadians are indeed very split on this. Prominent Canadians, such as Lt. General Romeo Dallaire, have spoken out in favor of his repatriation. Dallaire, for those who don't know (I'm sure he's a household name in Canada, but likely less known elsewhere), was the Force Commander of UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission for Rawanda), and spends much of his time now speaking out against the use of child soldiers (which, by definition he is/was). I also know that Amnesty International would like to see Khadr out of Guantanamo. I'm really not sure what Canada would do with him if they got him back. I know Harper hasn't exactly been rallying in his favor....but I was never foolish enough to expect the man to start spouting children's rights doctrine in the first place.... |

Original Post by susiecue:
Bullying is in no way always physical, and to assume that emotional bullying does not cause as much (if not more) psychological damage than its physical counterpart would be extremely shortsighted. In fact I wouldn't be suprised if most people on this board are referencing instances of emotionally bullying.
I agree, some kids will find ANYTHING to tease you about and use it. I was never the "fat kid" in class, however through middle school, and particularily grade 8, I was teased horribly by several boys because I had raging acne. In addition, I decided one day to cut my hair short, and all of a sudden I was a lesbian too (nothing against lesbians, it just wasn't true...somehow this carried into high school as well). That year emotionally crippled me more than anything else I went through between the years of 12 and 17, but I learned to stand up for myself and fight back, and I feel I am a much stronger person for it now. I will try and put what bigbitty said into less emotional, more rational words: of course kids need to know how to defend themselves! They do, however, also need to know WHEN to defend themselves and WHEN not to, so they don't end up physically hurt.
It just seems to me that being overly consumed with terrible things that happened to you int he past (and I emphasize terrible, since some of the stories you folks have shared seem just horrific) can't be healthy... |

I'm a university student. The campus clinic employs a wide variety of medical staff. You name it, they have it. I'd imagine any doctor would have to have at least some training in nutrition though, albeit not extensive. I'm really just looking for someone who can assess my plan and tell me if it is or isn't a good idea. While online resources like this are useful, as a previous poster mentioned, there are lots of factors contributing to bmi which aren't often used in online calculations (muscle mass, frame size, etc). |
