Hi everyone! I have been lurking for the past few weeks. And I have been very lax about logging my food. However, I really think I've gotten used to portion control and reasonable healthy eating because eventhough I have not been logging and eventhough I've had a few events filled with food temptations I managed to drop another lb. Granted it's the same lb I've been losing for a while but at least it was a lb and I feel good that I did not put on any weight, something I was sure I had done after the Ann Arbor Art Fair and all the "fair food" which frankly is not fair at all. HEHEHE I mean really, Chicken on a stick??? funnel cakes???? YIKES. I managed to escape with a nice indian meal of Sag Paneer and rice. MMMMMM I'll jump in on the last question: No, I don't talk to the scale because I am usually butt naked standing in my step daughter's bathroom where our scale is located, hoping no one is home to see me. I figure that's crazy enough behavior. I also wanted to weigh in (pun intended) on the elections question. I don't know if I want the election to come early but I am excited by the election this and am eager to see how it unfolds. What an exciting time for our country, let's hope for opportunities in the midst of these crisises we are facing. |

Hi gwynne, I feel your pain and I know many others here do too. Pooping in general is a conversation many of us have had here at CC but I for one am always glad to keep up with the latest recommendations and ruminations on the subject. Given that 70% (or close to that) of our immune system is located in our digestive system, it is important to keep it operating at optimal levels. That said, if I do not have at least 2 glasses of psyllium husks per day I end up with problems. When I am "stopped up" I find that drinking prune juice is one of the only things that "get me going" It may feel odd and you'll get some rumbling but it's not harsh like laxitives. In fact, please avoid the laxatives, they are really unhealthy. Go buy some prune juice and see if it works. Drink about 4 to 6 ounces and see how you feel in 1/2 hour. STay close to a bathroom cause when it work, it's fast. Things that can cause the constipation are bananas and cheese. If you want to have a lenghtier discussion, I'm always available to for poop talk!! Good luck and I hope everything comes out allright HEEHEE!! |

HI all! I actually came back to see if Molly's DH was still on track to come home tomorrow and I'm glad to see that yes, he is! Have a beautiful reunion Molly but I won't stop prayin' til he gets of the plane! I have been very bad this past week and have not been logging my food. The good news is that after almost two years of counting calories I have now gotten used to eating less, more reasonable portions and more healthy foods. So much so that I think this eating healthy thing is becoming habit! YIPPY! This means that eventhough I'm not counting, I did not gain any weight and I feel good. In fact I think I'm headed down the scale another lb. after this week, ok, maybe .5 lb but its something! Ethnic food lately, Thai (namely Pad Thai, but I've also been doing Greek for lunch lately cause there is an excellent great rest. near where I work. Central Gyro for all you Chicagoans. You know you went there at 4AM after a night out at the bar, everyone did! Anyway, Greek and Thai for today but ask me next month and I'm sure it will be different. |

Oh, and Melly, I'm so with you on the carb thing. I would never be able to face a life without carbs and when I did try going Atkins I ended up feeling very sick and weak. I am a firm believer, like many here, that eliminating any particular food type is setting us up for failure. Congrats Melly on your progress, rock on axejudge and laurienkids! Y'all inspire me to keep going! |

Hi All! I've been MIA from posting for some time, I have been lurking but just not been keeping up with the QOD or my goal progress. But I am happy to say that eventhough I had a food orgy weekend with one party after another I managed to stay calorie neutral and not put on any lbs. The better news is that I have been slowly losing some lbs, namely 4 lbs over the past 4 weeks. I am so happy about those few little 4 lbs that I cannot contain myself. I realize that since I have fewer lbs to lose now it's just going to have to come off around a lb a week and I have to be ok with that. The flip side is that 4 lbs makes a difference in my clothes such as no harsh red waist line markings after a day of wearing my jeans. AS for my goals, I'm doing pretty good on all except for the coffee. I love coffee!!! It is so hard for me to give up but I know I should. Right now I'm going to choose decaf. Ugh! Good luck everyone and keep up the great work! |

Ok, I really don't belong on this post because I am OLD!! So old that at first I thought Tegan and Sara were other posters and I was looking for their posts... DUH But this caught my eye because if I have music that motivates me I will workout so much harder and longer than if I don't. For me it has to be upbeat and fun. So, at the risk of embarrassing myself beyong belief I still have "MMBOP" on my workout playlist, along with "Two Princes" and "The Way" I also love latin music and am currently exploring reggeton options for a new playlist. First song to be added will be "Noche de Entierro" but I'm hoping to find some "clean" reggeton as I am not interested in the misogenistic crap I sometimes hear. Any suggestions? And brokenbones, I also have "Going to a Town" by Rufus Wainwright which is kind of a downer too but for some reason it gets me going, I think it does help me focus and maybe because I love his voice and the message in the song... who knows. Ok, so there you go, you may commence the eye rolling and the making of the fun!!! :) but be kind! |

Yes, now I remember that the better soy is the unfermented kind, that's what that article said. Are there any other unfermented soy products other than miso and tempeh? I'd like to start replacing my soy with the better choice but I'm not sure how. Any ideas? |

| Vegetarian | Soy: am I crazy? | Jun 19 2008 16:41 (UTC) |

Ah, the endless soy debate. I read an article a few months back that talked about the soy question and gave a list of soy products that are better and those that are worse. Miso is the best type of soy and other organic soy products should be ok. The article said that soy milk is not great because of the level of processing that takes place and because it is made from the by products of other soy products. They also warned against soy protein isolates for the same reason. I for one will say that I started drinking a protein shake in the mornings, 3 tablespoons of a soy protein isolate, 1 cup unsweetened soy milk and frozen berries. It's yummy and fill me up til lunch time. But the reason I started in the first place was because I was diagnosed with fibroids which were causing me a lot of pain and discomfort among other things. Those symptoms have disapeared now with my increased intake of soy. After reading the article I reduced the number of shakes per week to around 3 or 4 but I don't want to tempt fate so I'm going to keep it in my diet. My two cents! |

Congrats Molly! What a milestone! I have been lazy about my forum contact but I've been good about logging my food, even this weekend. While I felt like I was overeating the calorie count was still pretty good and I ended up dropping a lb. I've decided that my weight loss journey is going to be very slow and I just have to come to terms with that. I mean really slow, but that has to be ok otherwise I'd be depressed all the time. I feel good, that's what's important. As for today's question (I'm too lazy to look back at the one's I missed) I love it!! What a great way to learn about spices and adding flavor without fat! Lately I've been trying to use hummus in as many ways as possible. It's a great spread and there are so many different flavors it is very versatile. My all time favorite spice is cumin, I add it to lots of dishes. I also have a smokey paprika that is from Spain that I use in lots of stuff. Finally, I must mention my VegeSal which is a salt sub that is very tastey. Put it on popcorn and you'll never miss the butter. Seriously! Have a great, Happy Healthy Day all! |

Hi all, Well, I did not have the weekend I wanted. I wanted to get in one workout and I wanted to count calories which I had not been doing. I did not do either, HOWEVER, my Monday morning weigh-in showed a 1 lb loss! YIPPY! Now I know my scale can read something other than 138. I am celebrating this because eventhough I didn't hit my weekend goals, I was very conscious about what I ate and I tried to count in my head instead of running to the computer, something I just had no time for. I also threw a healthy potluck dinner where I asked folks to bring something healthy. They did and we all felt great! So if you want a kick butt tilapia recipe, try this http://weightwatchers.com/util/prt/recipe.asp x?type=1&Recipeid=129201 You can entertain with it even with folks who are not doing the healthy lifestyle thing. So tasty! Also, for desert we grilled up fruit, sprinkled toasted coconut and crumbled Ameretti cookies on it with a small dollop of whipped cream. I know it sounds decadent but because the fruit is the star of the show you use so little of the fattening stuff it turns out to be fewer calories. As for the question of the day, my shortened version would be "fake it 'til ya make it" which I've always believed in. I think that we have to force ourselves to do some stuff before we really understand or buy-into it's benefits. We also have to do the same in relationships as southern-midwife was saying. I know I did for my step-family members and tho it was hard we are much better off for it. |

This is so funny because on Sunday night I was driving home and past a mcdonald's and my car just pulled in and ordered 2 small McFlurries. Really, it did, I drive a bug so you know those cars are alive, remember Herbie? But seriously, my hubby and I love those things and I'm not even supposed to be eating dairy!!! Here was my rationale, "we all know that there's not really much real milk in those things, it's all chemicals, right, so it'll be ok" This is actually what I was thinking in the drive thru. At least your reasoning was much better than mine, not arguing with your mom is a great accomplishment and I'm glad you guys took the time to celebrate! Listen to Duke and enjoy your treat and move on! Congrats! |

That is so funny! My best workout partners are my two dogs and my 7 y/o nephew. He loves to do Turbo Jam and prefers it over playing Nascar '06 on the XBox (I'm sure that won't last much longer) He tries to copy the moves, then when he gets bored with that he wants to get on the treadmill. It is so nice to have a workout partner who doesn't want to stop and have ice cream first or tries to talk you out of a workout and opt for dinner out. The dogs don't do that either, which is nice. |

I have to chime in with a story about how my irritated self was put in her place once on a plane. I used to travel on business and one Friday, on a packed flight I was going home, tired from the week and just wanted to sit in my aisle seat and read my book. A woman who did not speak much English was motioning to me that she wanted to trade seats with me. I was like, "what seat do you have" and her's was a middle seat. Now I'm short and I'm not THAT uncomfortable in a middle seat but that day I was all, "No Way, I'm not trading your middle for my aisle seat, nuh uh!!" I was pretty indignant too until I noticed that the reason she needed my seat was that the brainiacs at the airline put her 3 year old son in a middle seat next to mine and she was like 10 rows back. She only wanted to sit next to her child. I felt like the whole plane thought I was a real b#@%ch, I tried to make it up and say how sorry I was and of course she can have my seat but I still felt like turd. I say this because we do need to try to get the whole picture before making judgements. Of course I have a whole list of airport rants but I'll save that for another day. |

Ditto to what SMWHIPPLE wrote. A good, extremely fit friend of mine told me once that none of the hype matters, just get out there and do something. If you are disciplined and need to follow some sort of routine, find one that you like and do it. But don't stress about things like "is it best to workout in the mornings" or "does drinking a protein shake before my workout increase effectiveness" because, frankly, stuff like this gives you reasons to NOT do your workout. Like, "well, I guess I missed my workout this morning so since it's best to workout in the mornings I will just skip today and do it tomorrow." Good luck and overall, have fun!!! (of course, please make good choices and be careful to not hurt yourself.)

HI all, I've been a lazy lurker lately as I have not been very good about my eating and exercise. I am now over my cold and feeling more motivated. I have been keeping to at least one of my goals which is to stay in e-mail contact with my girlfriends who are also working on their healthy lifestyle. We call it virtual motivation and it seems to work, at least to encourage us to get back on track when we fall off the wagon. Anyway, I'll jump in on today's question: My favorite healthy sweek snack is fruit, anykind, especially cut up into a mixed fruit salad. Lately I've been enjoying the first melons of the season and pineapples. As for the savory snacks, I love all kinds of crunchy snacks but lately it's been popcorn. Now I'm off to do Turbo Jam as it looks like rain here in Chi-Town. And MOLLY, my tomato plants look fabulous but no fruits yet, just little budding flowers! The pepper plants don't look like they are growing but they look healthy. We shall see. I also have some herbs growing in a pot out there and those look to be doing well too so I'm so excited given that I have never gardened before. My dream is to make homemade salsa with my homegrown tomatoes and habanero peppers, can it and give it away for Christmas! Wish me luck! Do you ever do any canning? Blessings to your hubby, I think of him every time I come here to visit you Molly, you are amazingly strong. Let me know if you are interested in the Salsa canning project and we can share stories....   ; |

I will SO buy your book when you finish. Do you have advanced ordering? The reason is that my hubby has a HUGE sweet tooth. I really don't but everyonce in a while (or should I say once a month:) I get a craving or two. So we can both fend off his tooth but when mine rears it's ugly head, we cave. Then we run out and get a McFlurry or something equally as bad and I pay for it the next day. Forgive me if you read this in another thread but feel free to use my apple-pie-in-a-bag suggestion which is sliced apples, ground walnuts with cinnamin or apple pie spices. Toss all in a bag to coat apples and enjoy. Tastes great and is low cal. Sorry it's not chocolate. Good luck with your book! |

I was just going to lurk but after reading zimcassy's "check please" comments I had to chime in. We usually don't end up with too little money any more (used to when I was younger) but what does happen is that since I've been counting calories I rarely eat an entire entree and more often I want to order an appetizer or a salad. But when the bill comes we always just split it evenly. I hate arguing over the bill as well but there are times when my portion comes to like 20 bucks and everyone else owes more like 40, it just doesn't seem fair. I am embarrassed to say anything so I usually get an entree and bring some home but I swear, this makes me decline invitations sometimes, depending on the group of friends. |

| Foods | What can I mix in? | Jun 02 2008 20:30 (UTC) |

This is a good question as I have never thought of mixing in something, I end up tearing up my bread trying to get the 1 tblspn of PB to spread to each end. I think the milk idea is fine and sounds good but how many cals in the almond milk? I also have better luck with toast that is still warm cause the PB loosens up and thins out so maybe heat up the PB in the micro if you want it on bread. Other ideas might be unsweetened soy milk, agave or maybe even add a little water since most of my ideas will still add cals so your not really saving anything. I'm going to try this out this week since I LOVE PB and especially on bread. |

Hi all, I'm back from lurking and from camping this past weekend. I caught a nasty cold (probably from one of my clients who is 7 years old and spent most of our session last week sniffing while playing with leggos, then wiping his nose with his hands and offering me the leggos to play with) Let me say that camping with a cold sucks! But we managed a nice hike on Sunday and plan to camp more this summer since my nephew really enjoyed it. So that last few days I have been lurking around here, convelescing and eating a lot of stuff that I should not have eaten. Today I'm feeling better, still a little weak but I'm going to see my trainer tonight so I can get back into my routine. I'm glad to have the forum's here to help me climb back up on that wagon, AGAIN! Let's see, I know I've missed several of the questions of the day. I don't think there is one today yet but as for yesterday, I only had a protein shake in the morning, otherwise I had several handfuls of sugary coated almonds which I"m sure cancels out any benefits from the protein in the nuts. Obviosly, yesterday sucked for me food wise. Today is a new day! |

Hi all, karenie: I can also highly recommend VegeSal Very tastey on popcorn and, like spike it doesn't try to taste like salt, just a very tasty alternative Dianne: Hang in there! Your post made me realize how I'm not alone and even if I completely blow my calories, I can keep coming back here for help and tomorrow is always a new day. Molly, thanks for the pics of the kitties! I love kitties but my doggies do not so pics are as close as I can get! And the quilt is very nice and very stylish, under 20 bucks huh? Wow As for fish: I am from the midwest where the only fresh fish you can really get is fresh water stuff and even that is not always fresh. I never liked it but like fighead I am trying new things and hoping to come across recipes that I really enjoy. I did find a tilapia recipe by weighwatchers that is wonderful! If anyone wants it I can provide a link. I do eat canned tuna and shrimp but other than that it's not a mainstay in my house. I do, however, take a fish oil supplement and it does not cause me to burp up fishy gas, which is nice! Happy weekend all and wish me luck on avoiding those s'mores when I go camping. I'd like to keep them to only one a night.

diet food I hate: Anything that has fake sugar in it. This dislike for any fake sugar limits my sweets intake and at times causes calorie overage as I end up choosing real sugar items that are higher in cals but I just can't stand the taste, even splenda. Stevia does something weird to my digestion so I have to keep eating the real sugar when I need a fix. Luckily, fruits really satisfy my cravings for sweets nowadays so "I've got that goin' for me, which is good" <---- anyone know the reference? Got up this morning and skated for 15 minutes with the dogs, not as long as I wanted but I have my strength training tonight so I should reach my activity goal this week, no problem. Went to Yoga last night, so lovely and relaxing as well as challenging. The scale has not been too cooperative lately but at least I feel good. Happy Thursday all!! |

I had a very good day today (35 mins roller-blading, good stuff to eat!) and this week has been on track with my goals. I did eat into my deficit yesterday. How, you ask, did I do that given I fasted for most of the day??? Well that's exactly it, I was so hungry by the time it was ok for me to eat, I could not stop. But, the good news is I still had a deficit (about 150 cals) and the food was not bad food. Peanut butter toast, graham crackers and nuts. Work out wise I am on track as well for the week and I did send out a motivation e-mail to my friends who have not responded yet! Glad I have y'all here to keep me goin' It's great to get snack ideas and to see how everyone is fitting in all the water. Perhaps a good follow-up question is "how do you find the extra time to pee after drinking all that water?" Thanks all for the reminder to drink more water as I have been lax about that for while now. |

Hi Erica, I think this may be some left over stuff from the ED issues you've had that you mention in your profile. Maybe there is some trigger you are trying to avoid which means YEAH for you! Try to figure out exactly what is uncomfortable (some specific topic? how people talk about food? how people talk to YOU about food etc?) and also what does uncomfortable mean? like do you get upset/sad or do you get angry/frustrated or some combination? This may help you figure out the reason for the feelings. Also, it is very normal to find it difficult to discuss certain things with family. I avoid the normal topics such as politics and religion like the plague with my family. And if it does come up, I do leave the room. There is nothing wrong with that. You can meet me in the other room and we can go for walk! See you there! |

Hmmmm veggies I have right now... Broccoli, romaine lettuce, carrots, celery, onion, frozen green beans, frozen mixed veggies, frozen spinach. I will eat none of that today as I am fasting today (health reasons) but tomorrow (and rest of the week) I plan to eat some variety of frozen veggies with tsp of olive oil and salt for lunch along with some other healthy choice. The fresh stuff will probably get eaten in salads this week. I must buy some apples! |

This in addition to continuing with my strength training 2 days per week. 3.) Finally drop those 10 lbs. I must do this I must do this I must do this 4.) Return to sending "virtual motivation" e-mails to my friends who are all trying to maintain healthy lifestyles. (at least once per week) 3.) Had to chime in because my husband does the same thing to me. When I wasn't watching my calories I didn't mind at all. But now I just tell him that I've measured out my food and I would like to enjoy it all and he's fine with it. I don't, however, say anything to a friend if it happens, but I have to admit, it doesn't happen too often, my friends all want their own food :) Sharing is a good thing, of course, but I do get pretty selfish when I only have 1 cup of cereal to snack on at night, sorry but I want it all! |
