I am sooo sorry it took me so long to reply...I use CC mostly for the Food Log, Activity Log and Weight Update trackers...I sent a msg in January..got some questions behind it...then I guess you all thought I fell off the face of  the earth huh?

Well, "zig-zag" calories ...what I mean by that is for ME, I eat 1350-1400 cals per day...well, I pick ONE day p/week that I will go ahead and consume an extra 350-500 cals - I have found that I have to do several things with my calorie intake AND workouts to keep my metabolism moving for STEADY weight loss...I am the type that if I'm not seeing consistent loss each week, I get very frustrated...so those are a couple of tricks I've learned...be consistent...very consistent 5-6 days per week with food and workout plan...then take 1 day to UP the cals and a couple of days to do a TOTALLY DIFFERENT work out....

Weight Loss 5', 29, Need to lose 55lbs. anyone else? Apr 03 2009
03:04 (UTC)

Hi! I'm 5'1...currently 173 lbs...highest weight was 192 last year in February!  I started last year using Biggest Loser plans...I was able to get down to 158 lbs from feb 2008 - august 2008...then the fall came and the holidays and i gained 12 lbs back...I started up again this past week...Sunday I weighed in at 177...today, (I'm a scale fanatic...people will argue for DAYS how "much" you are supposed to weigh...but DAILY works for me b/c I can see HOW WHAT I DO EACH DAY affects my loss/gain...only exception is when I'm on my period)...anyway, Sunday was 177, today was 173...I weigh at 7:45am every morning on the dot...(after I go to bathroom also)...I have learned for MY BODY...we are short...that if I do not do a "mini" workout in the morning, plus my workout in the evening...my metabolism and weight loss stall' after so long...my calorie intake is 1350-1400 normally...I "zig-zag" though once a week and get in 1500-1700 to "trick" my metabolism...can you tell I HATE PLATEAUS???  and my daily goal is to burn 500-700 cals through workouts...I work out 6 days a week with 1 day off...I do CARDIO/CIRCUIT all six days and do CALISTHENICS/TONING 2-3 times per week...everyone is different, but maybe something I wrote will help you...good luck...my goal is 125 before November 22, 2009 - my 33rd B-Day - everyone have a good nite!

Fitness Anyone on their journey with out the use of a gym? Apr 03 2009

You don't need a gym...I have a treadmill and free weights...yeah they're nice to use...however...you get such a better FULL BODY workout doing routines that call for NO MACHINES...Jumping jacks, lunges, frog jumps, push ups, tug-o-war challenges...remember back in the day when it seemed that less and less people had "weight problems"??? That was before expensive gym memberships, ipods, cell phones, etc....  remember when kids weren't overweight...and if they were...there was only "1" in a class of 25??? That was before video games, regular trips to the fast food joints, mp3 players...and yes...even Wii!!! B/C it's still SIMULATED! :) lol....not to be preachy, but my point is...I have a gym membership AND some basic equipment at home...and I STILL get bored and find myself burning cals and gettin' the metabolism revved up w/o ONE MACHINE...just plain ole' fashion exercise!...hope that makes you feel better...good luck...by the way...I don't know how far you are into your plan, but Jillian has a 60 -minute Metabolism Boost workout that will absolutely kick your ass!!! Excuse my french...and guess what??? NO GADGETS, MACHINES, BALLS, ROPES, etc...  give it a try!

Weight Loss Confused about how many cals I should consume Apr 03 2009

I'm 5'1...I gotta a way to go to get to my goal weight of 125...however, last year around this time I lost 32 lbs over 4 months...what I have found is that you can consume what you want in calories...the key is what you are burning...if you are not in a hurry to take off the few lbs...then 1500-1700 cals should be ok...as long as you are burning more than consuming you are fine...you will lose...(making sure all your consumption cals are not "junk" :) )....anyway, just remember 3500=1 POUND...so if you want to lose 1 lb per week...when you add up "CALS IN" vs "CALS BURNED" you want a deficit of 3500 per week...also remember on a daily basis, you don't want to have a deficit of more than 1000 cals b/c your body may start to work against you and "hold on" to the weight...hope that wasn't confusing and hope it helped...

OOOPS! I meant I substitute the CLUB SODA for the TONIC LOL!!! Typing too fast...and I forgot a drink...Long Island Iced Tea...I do those on RARE occasions now...WAAYYY TOOO MANY CALS!!!! Not worth it at all!!!!

I should start a "Light Bar"??? Would it work? A bar for people who are "health concsience" but still like to have drinks from time to time...using substitutes that are like 1/2 the cals, but taste good???  A bar that lists ALL the cals/sugar/etc... for each drink on the menu??? Hmmmm....  I don't think I'd make any money...when people go to the bar...it's a "treat"...who REALLY wants to THINK about calories...except US??? :) LOL! Bye all - Keep your heads up and Keep GOING!!!

The BAR! Not an alchoholic...but LOVE to have drinks 2-4 times per week on heavy weeks and at least 2x per week on "light" weeks...my drinks of choice:     1.   Gin & Tonic (when I'm being "good" I substitute the tonic for club soda)  2.  Lemon Drop Martinis - no subs, it just isn't right with something else  3.  Miller Lite   4.  Vodka & Tonic (again, when I'm good sub tonic for club soda)...I DO try to use the Low Sodium versions and Diet versions of the Soda/Tonic when I'm home...at the bar, it's a lost cause unless you bring your own! :)   When I am really being diligent, I MAKE ROOM for alcohol calories...the problem is, if you PLAN to drink just TWO...and then you start feeling good...you're gonna drink TWO MORE...maybe 3! :)  So "planning" for alcohol really only works for me 10 % of the time when I'm going out...at home it's easy...no distractions and NO PARTYING going on thereUndecided!

What keeps me motivated?  Vanity :)  Looking at myself FIT into things I KNEW I couldn't get past my hips 2 months prior...others telling me..."OMG What are you doing??? You look so good! I wish I had your will power!"...I won't tell a lie...I feel GREAT when I get those comments...I only feel uncomfortable when the same co-worker says it like 4 times a week OR when I've hit a plateau or KNOW I haven't really been working like I should!

Be Breezy everyone!

Thanks for all the input...I love this site b/c I can get answers from many different view points...sort them out and see what works for me...I did need to share a positive exp:  I was "off" the bandwagon for working out for the last few weeks...well, I got back on the treadmill last night and I couldn't believe how much of a difference it was in my breathing...before, I REALLY thought I was breathing harder b/c of HOW HARD I was working on the treadmill...(talk about DENIAL)...I think b/c I never got sick or experienced smoker's cough,etc... plus the fact that I started smoking 5 years ago...I didn't have "smokers' ailments"...now I KNOW I could have been pushing myself so much harder on the treadmill WITHOUT the smokes...I put in 66 minutes last night...normally my chest would have been "dancing" on its own...nope...I drank some water and felt I could go for another 66 minutes...I MISS my smokes...but I LOVE that they're gone...and yes...the dreams are nice...mine aren't so "erotic" but just "vivid"...probably b/c I take my evening dose of Chantix around 6pm...and don't go to bed til' 11pm...

One more question for the smokers who have successfully used Chantix:  I know we are all different...but I haven't picked up a smoke in 2 weeks...I even "tried" to smoke the 1st day of my quit...and it tasted horrible...did absolutely NOTHING for me...I really don't like to be on medication of any kind any longer than I need to...do you think it's safe to stop my pills yet??? My doctor has never smoked, so I wanted advice from those who had been there...

Hi! Detroit huh? My dad and sister are up that way...Pittsfield Township right outside of Ypsilanti, but both work in Livonia...anyhoo', in my opinion I don't think you should increase your workouts if you're not going to increase that calorie intake to 1200...make a decision for yourself...I'm not saying this will work for you, but try...if you increase your cals to 1200 per day, I would work out to burn 500 cals each day..do you have a treadmill??? Or any other workout machine??? Or if you don't they have these Heart Rate Monitors, (I don't have one) that will give you estimates on how many cals you are burning during a workout, Calorie Count has the same thing also...SPREAD your calories out during the day...don't eat 200 in the morning then 1000 at 7pm in the evening...that stalls your metabolism too...I got lazy with this, but try to do 1/2 your workout in the morning and 1/2 in the evening...helps your metabolism as well...those are some tips..since we are in the same "range" and trying to lose about the same amount of weight, these tips might work...oh yeah, before I forget..WATER, WATER, WATER...you're short like me and it will feel as though your stomach is gonna burst somtimes, or you'll feel VERY fat drinking lots of WATER, but it works..it works..it works...don't worry about it...and NEVER get on the scale after drinking a lot of it...wait till the next day or something...I gotta get back to work, but I look forward to talking to you during this journey we're on...take care!

Hello asamoss18,

I'm from Michigan...Southwest Michigan....last year when I started the first time in February, I weighed 192....anyway, I bought 2 books that were great...I followed the advice and I was down to 158 by the end of August last year...I took a "break", stopped working out from Sept. thru December and gained 12 lbs back...so I started again last month...anyway...I bought the Biggest Loser calorie book...I NEVER wanted to count calories...never...but when I forced myself to and got used to it, it's great...we HAVE to know what goes IN our mouths...if you're gonna lose weight! So you don't have to get the Biggest Loser calorie book, use the tools on here AND find you a calorie book you can use when you can't get to the computer...I also bought the Biggest Loser Plan book at Walmart...it was like $12...it has their plan, testimonials and recipes in it...I stuck with the basics of the plan which was YOUR WEIGHT x 7 = Calories needed to lose weight...I followed the exercise plan in the book exactly and the first 20-25 lbs came off within 2 1/2 months...then I hit a plateau and I started to add calisthenics/toning exercises to my routine and I started doing 1-2minute sprints on the treadmill...I also had to up my calories a little when I changed the exercise routine and then I lost about 15 more...I fully believe if I had stayed diligent from September-December last year, I would have hit my goal weight of 130, but I didn't...life happens, we get lazy...and here I am starting again...I'm not mad though, b/c with the Biggest Loser plan and now the support of this website, I'll get to 130 this year...day by day...meal by meal...I do think  1000 cals is not enough...at least 200 more...don't work AGAINST yourself with not eating enough cals...you'll get frustrated and binge ALOT...one plan does not fit everyone, but try it out...it's alot CHEAPER than all the other fads/pills/plans out there and remember if you don't MOVE you don't LOSE...no matter what your eating habits are! My journal is public if you ever want to take a peak at my ups and downs on a daily basis...good luck!

Finally broke the 70's today ;)!!!!  I know what it felt like last year to break the 70s and the 60s, but I also know what it felt like to gain some back...so this is like the FIRST time...and I'm making a committment the "last" time...the re-boot is working out I guess with the 1200-1300 cals per day and only working out to burn 500 cals on the treadmill...I'll stick with it until I plateau and then we'll go to step B...I am very hungry this morning and I'm going to eat, but I have the personality to like dinner over the other meals in the day, so I hope I can stretch these cals out today...if there's one thing I can say, being on a lower cal allotment FORCES you to make good choices or you won't eat! You'll starve...someone asked me did I feel fulfilled with 1200 cals on the forum...yeah very fulfilled when I eat the RIGHT stuff...there's no "cheat" days with cal allotments like that and I think that's what makes it so hard for us...even on Valentine's Day, I've set my limit at 1500...I can do it, we all can, we just have to find time in our busy lives to PLAN for it...I think I'll end up doing Applebee's for dinner on Saturday so I can be lazy and choose one of the Weight Watchers dinners they have and dessert..then I know exactly what's going in my mouth...I don't like to go to a restaraunt and literally CHANGE the whole entree...what's the point??? Plus, the chef's could absolutely choke people like that :)  I work with a chef and he said if you're on that strict of of a plan...don't go out. Period. lol!  Good luck to everyone...I feel good, but I'm still keeping my guards up at this time for a few more weeks...I'll take this 169 this morning...but with caution! Talk to you all later...doing 1/2 the workout in the AM is helping my metabolism too I think.

I'm 5'1"...my bone structure is larger size...esp for the BMI charts...I'm considered "severely overweight", but look nothing like it...not being vain, but I know...anyhow, what I'm planning this week is taking the workouts down to 30 minutes in the morning on the treamill 3.5 speed at 3.5 incline, then 30 minutes after work...that's it...no Taebo or any extras...with the calories, I'm sticking to 1200 this week...Monday thru next Sunday...(realistically with the exception of Valentine's Day)....I'll see how that works on the scale next Monday for me...it might be enough Jump-Start...I think it's with the calories not with the workouts...but we'll see...thanks for the advice

Thanks for the advice...suzie...yes, I'm counting all calories...I learned to do that with the BL plan ....sugar, butter, sauces, everything...I know how those can sneak up on people in BIG numbers..."tatertotaggie"...I will try to mix up the workout routine...the thing is...being that I'm not even a month in to re-starting my plan, I thought it would be way too early to do that???  maybe it's the fact that my 5'1" frame was so ready to release that first 20 lbs a year ago and maybe that's why it came off so easy...last year when I hit about 168...I hit the plateau...added calisthenics to the workout...added the "sprints" you were talking about and then glided my way down to 158...the lowest I ever hit...my ultimate GOAL is 130 b/c I'm "bigger-boned" and have never wanted to appear skinny/thin...but toned & curvy...I'm just at a loss...if I can get a good movement on the scale I'll be fine mentally...I looked at my journal from last year and the first week I was on a 1300 cal allotment per day with 30 minutes of treadmill each day...I lost 5lbs that first week...I think I have two choices...up the cals with the workouts I'm doing now...(which is Billy Blanks Ultimate Bootcamp or Basic Training Bootcamp & Treadmill w/ incline of 3.5 at 3.5-4.0 for 60 minutes - not including warm up or cooldown...), with those two workouts I'm burning an estimate of 900-1200 per day....eating about 1600-1800 per day...so if I keep that routine, maybe cals should be at 2000? That sounds TOO scary to me...OR, I should do just the treadmill and take the eating cals to 1400??? I'm sorry if I have given too much/too little information or if I'm asking too many questions...but you all are the only support I have and the only people I can get advice from...I don't want to quit...I got 43 lbs to lose and I know I can do it...why does it have to be so hard at times.

Do I still workout while I up the cals to Maint this week? My maintenance cals is at 1900...also, I workout in the evening primarily...right after work...5:30/6pm - 8PM...when I can I get 30 minutes in the morning before work...on Saturday/Sunday workouts fall around 11 am - 1pm...when I drop the cals should I go back to the 1200-1400 like last year???  What do you think?

I know Courtney...my cycle ends tomorrow,  maybe Friday...i weighed in this morning...173...I'm disgusted...still on plan, but disgusted...171 staring back at me for two days last week...and then...back to where I started instead of being around 168 by now....that's life...sometimes I wish I could "fast-forward" times like these...but I guess we have to keep things in perspective...all I know is that I'm not changing my 1st goal date: Febuary 15th - 160 lbs for "nature's sake", so there's a lot of work to do over the next 18 days...(realistically, I may end up settling for 165 for the 1st goal date, now that I look at a calendar :) !

Hello,

I'm 5'1 and currently 173 lbs, ( a little inaccurate due to my "cycle" this week"), however, I started my fitness journey last February 2008 right after Valentine's Day...when I started I weighed in at 192! I didn't recognize myself anymore! So I used the Biggest Loser plan for calories, ( my weight x 7 for my calorie intake), and within 3 months I lost 25 lbs!...I also was planning to be a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding at the end of August last year so that was extra motivation...when I started I didn't "watch" the type of food I ate, just the calories...but then I wanted to eat "more", so that forced me to start seeking new recipes and tricks to get more BANG for my buck with the calories...I hit 170 and my body STALLED...major PLATEAU...so i figured out I had to UP my calorie intake and add CIRCUIT to my routine...once I changed the cal intake to 1500-1800 and added strenght training to my routine, I lost 12 more lbs...by the end of August I was 158!!!! Great huh?  Well, after the wedding I took a "break"...I still kept most of my good eating habits, but I stopped working out...didn't get on the treadmill for 3 months...MAJOR MISTAKE FOR SHORT WOMEN...WE HAVE TO DO CARDIO...WE HAVE TO!..Well I gained 4 pounds per month from September - December 2008...I weighed in January 19th at 174 lbs and decided to start again that day...two weeks later I feel GREAT! I won't weigh in again until the 28th and I'll update...if you want to see more, go to my journal...it's public...posting and talking with you all keeps me on target...and I love the Meters on CC!!! No more writing my cals down on slips of paper...I just log them...My Valetine's Day goal for 2009 is 160 lbs...My Easter Goal is 145...My Mother's Day Goal is 135-140 and my FIRST DAY of SUMMER GOAL is 125 - 130LBS....We can get there!!! I promise to post...the good, bad and ugly until June 21st, 2009! After that, I'll still be around CC for "maintenance" for at least another year...good luck everyone!...By the way, I'm 32 years old, just in case anyone wanted to know.

I've had those type of nights too...it's all in the MIND...we know...I had a "perfect" calorie day going today...then I stopped off at a local bar for "one drink" with my sweetie...well, 1 gin and tonic and 2 gin and sodas later...plus a burger...I was devastated...what did i do??? got upset...but then came home and got straight on the treadmill...walked at 3.5 for 70 minutes while I watched A&E...now...no more beating myself up tonite...I only went over my cal allotment by 100 cals...and I worked out...this morning too...so tomorrow's a new day...when I get the late night craves...I get a bowl of cereal...frosted flakes...i know it has the "sugar" but it takes care of the craving and 150 cals later, I'm glad I didn't literally eat the kitchen!!! goodnite all...i'm sore, tired and a lil' hungover from exercising right after drinking...c-ya
