| Pregnancy & Parenting | Calorie Counting When Pregnant | Mar 16 2009 01:52 (UTC) |

| Thanks for all the good advice. I freaked out alittle because I was up 3 lbs last week but it HAD to be bloating. I definitely didn't consume that many extra calories. I have been pretty good at eating healthy food and I started taking prenatal vitamins too! I agree that if I eat right, I should just let nature take its course. I'm going in for an u/s on friday and will talk to my doc more about nutrition. Thanks again everyone!! | |||

Thanks everyone! I'm still smiling. It feels unreal. I have watched all my friends have kids for the past 15 or so years. As always I'm a late bloomer! But that's OK! LOL...And I had to do 3 because I just couldn't believe it. (Still won't until I see the doc.) |

| Foods | Sweet Potato Skin? | Feb 24 2009 03:16 (UTC) |

I looove sweet potatoes - skin and all. And I found a yummy sweet potato fries recipe that I'll share here. The paprika and the cinnamon really give it a delicious flavor. I usually just cut up 1/2 - 1 large swet potato for me and my husband and adjust the spices accordingly (e.g., I use 1 tbs olive oil). Enjoy! Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries 1 - 1 1/2 lb sweet potatoes Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil (preferably the easy release kind). Peal the sweet potatoes. Cut into strips that are about 1/2 inch wide on each side. Place the sweet potatoes into a sealable plastic bag. Add oil, salt, paprika and cinnamon. Seal the bag and shake well to thoroughly coat the fries. Spread the potatoes out onto the baking sheet in a single layer. Cook for 30 minutes, turning every 10 minutes. Transfer immediately to a paper towel lined plate and serve warm. |

| I'm certainly no expert but it seems like you need to vary your exercise more. I'm 5'2 and muscular---at your current weight I look fabulous. :) I know how frustrated you must be. We have all been there. This is mu second time around (first time was WW and I lost 50). It got to the point where I was exercisinf 5 days a week, eating 1300 or so calories a day and STILL not losing. Looking back, I am positive it was because I was in a rut with exercise. I ran a lot and my body adjusted very quickly. Maybe you can take a spinning class or try swimming...or up the intensity on the elliptical.
Good luck--you will get there! |

| YUM---I loooove gulab jamen! But I totally feel ur pain about calorie sticker shock. I went to quiznos last week and got a chicken sammie (just 1) and a snickerdoodle cookie. Afterwards found out the cookie was 400 calories! Luckily it was lunch so I had plenty of time to compensate. I do much better when I plan my treats. | |||
| Weight Loss | to those who count calories but don't exersize | Feb 07 2009 05:25 (UTC) |

| I eat around 1350 calories a day. Have lost 14 pounds in 5.5 weeks with no exercise (went to gym maybe 3 times during this period). It can be done, but I plan to work exercise back into my life. It will speed up metabolism and help with toning and strength--not to mention I will feel better. But right now, like you, timeand motivation are holding me up. | |||

LOL - mad4moon. I definitely did not taky ANY offense to your post -- I was just happy that someone replied (I'm still new to this!). I actually laughed when I read your message. I know I'm not "OLD" but I just feel like my body has changed (hormones probably) and it seems SO much harder to lose than it used to. That could also be because I'm much more stressed, tired, and haven't been exercising regularly. I know what you mean about thinking you were fat at a certain weight and then gaining and realizing you weren't really that "fat" and yearning for that size again. That is me! I definitley have my food under control -- which feels WONDERFUL since I was a bit out of control for a while. And I know I have it within me to exercise regularly again. So...baby steps. PS. Is that your cat? Too cute. I put my Sophie in my profile pic (I have other pets but she's my boo boo). Thanks again everyone. I feel much better today. Back on track! |

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words. I'm just tired...I have gained back all the weight I lost through weight watchers over a period of 4 years. I know it won't be lost overnight and I guess I have to face the fact that it's a plateau due to the rapid loss of 12 lbs. I'm 5'2" and 182 lbs. My goal is 155 by mid June (1-year anniversay; trip planned) and 140 by September. I realize these are lofty goals. And I realize I need to start exercising regularly if I want to come close to reaching them. I have never before lost solely by changing my eating habits. I am very muscular and at 140, I look like I weight 125 (size 4/6). I am thankful at least that I carry my weight well -- very proportionate. I started at the end of December just deciding to write down everything I ate and try to eat like I did in weight watchers. I decided to count calories instead of points and just try to make sure I have a good balance of carbs, fat, and protein. A typical day for me B: egg white omlette, whole grain toast with 1tsp butter, 1/2 glass OJ (I shoot for around 250-300 calories for breakfast) S: yogurt or apple w/peanut butter or snack bar -- shooting for 150 calories L: turkey sandwich (a serving of turkey on whole greain bread or tortilla, witha slice of provolone and mustard (no mayo anymore), baby carrots w/salsa or peanut butter (or some kind of veggie - salad, etc.), applesauce -- usually have about 350 calories for lunch D: Varies but I try to have a protein, a whole grain (although sometimes I will have small portions of regular rice, potatoes, etc with 1 tsp. olive oil, and a veggie (steamed, frozen - with 1 tsp olive oil) . Dinner is usually around 450 calories. Sometimes I have a snack after lunch and sometimes after dinner -- if so, then the calories for lunch and dinner are cut to accommodate the snacks. After dinner used to be my worst time. I could easily eat 2-3 bowls of cereal, leftovers from dinner, toast with butter, you name it. Now I usually have fruit or yogurt or the occasional skinny cow ice cream treat. I have been drinking a lot of decaf green tea with splenda. I'm definitely getting hooked on grean tea! According to this site, I should have 1350 calories/day to lose weight (I'm sedentary for now). I have been logging 1250 to 1450 over the past 5 weeks, so I THINK I'm staying within the parameters, however I haven't actually used this website to log my food. I carry a notebook and write down my food and thoughts for the day. I use the "complete book of calorie counts" which I have had for over 10 years to check my calories. I am also pretty dilgient about reading labels. One thing that trips me up from time to time is sodium and water retention. So I'm trying to be better about packaged foods (such as turkey or the chili I made for the superbowl using lots of canned items). I REALLY appreciate everyone's responses and welcome new buddies. I know one thing and its that I need support. I check the message boards every night just for inspiration and to know I'm not alone. I have struggled with my weight since I was a teen. Right now I'm also under a lot of stress from work (self-employed) and a new marriage. I find it harder to lose when I'm stressed. I know exercise will help this, but again...I need to get into the mental mode to exercise and I'm not quite there yet. You're talking to the girl who has run a marathon, completed several sprint triathlons, 5Ks, and 10Ks, was obsessed with spinning and aerobics back in the day and played sports in hs. I just can't get back into the swing of things. :( I will press on. Thanks again everyone. It really lifted my spirits to read the responses! :) |
