Fitness Do you have to sweat to burn calories and/or build muscle? Nov 14 2009
22:46 (UTC)

Sweat is not an accurate indicator because everyone sweats differently.  I don't hardly sweat at all.  When I was running (I hate that I have to say that, I swear I am going to start again), I would crank out 2 miles and hardly be able to breathe while I was cooling down and stretching because I had pushed myself so hard doing HIIT intervals.  Not hardly a drop.  I've done spinning classes before and gotten my heart rate higher than it has ever been for several minutes on end and hardly broken a sweat.  I just don't really sweat unless I am sitting in a sauna.

If you are at the gym have your heart rate up, you're doing good.

Weight Loss i am 5"5 and 120.8 pounds what is my size? Nov 08 2009

I'm 5'5.5"  (I always say 5'6 because it's easier) and I weight 125 and I am pretty consistently a 4. In some brands a 4 is a bit loose, and in some a bit snug.  So I would say you would probably be comfortable in a 2 or a 4 in most brands.

Weight Loss Supressing your Appetite...what works for you? Nov 03 2009

Coffee coffee coffee.  If it's past 5, decaf coffee.  If I am craving something sweet, I use some type of indulgent coffee creamer.  The coffee suppresses appetite if you get the munchies throughout the day, and indulging a bit with 50 calories worth of dark chocolate caramel coffee creamer is much better than giving in to a brownie or bowl of ice cream!

Weight Loss The FAT Stomach Oct 29 2009

You are also going to lose last from the place that you gained first. Basically, if you have always had a problem with your stomach, it will likely be the last place that you will lose fat from.  I've had lovehandles since I started gaining weight at 14... I'm now 5 pounds away from my goal weight, and they are just now starting to go away even though I've lost the other extra fat from the other areas of my body.  Be patient... that's all I got.  :)

Weight Loss to carb or not to carb Oct 29 2009

For me, I only let myself eat significant carbs if it has been a heavy exercise day.  If I feel fatigued and my muscles are tired, I let myself grab a bagel or some toast.  What I have found personally is that since carbs are for energy, if I have a "standard" day (a day off exercise or only very light exercise) and eat a carb heavy meal, I will retain water.  Also, carbs convert to sugars which are very quickly stored as fat if you don't burn the energy that they are trying to provide to your body.

I'm also flat footed which I have read is more troublesome for runners. Are you as well, perhaps?

YES!!!! I am actually.  I have collapsed arches.  I've heard that Nike makes special shoes for people with this, and I may just have to break down and buy them (I'm a PhD student and have managed to not starve to death thanks to coupons and happy hour dinner specials...I can hardly bring myself to spend $130 on running shoes when they always have some on clearance for $40!)

Wow, that makes me really happy to know that this has happened to someone else.  Thanks for sharing!  :)  If I do break down and get the shoes, I'll let you know if they help at all.

Weight Loss Should I quit watching the scale for a bit? Oct 27 2009

Greepea-  I'm with you... 135 was my plateau, I got stuck there for literally 2 months.

Britty-  I did calorie cycling and went between 1300 and 1700, keeping a weekly average of about 1450.  I would jog 2 miles 3-4 times a week, and do 30-45 minute exercise tapes (Hip Hop Abs and Turbo Jam-- yes, you will feel stupid if you desire to try these bopping around in your living room) on the other days.  I would also do walking lunges all around the living room in 15 minute increments while watching TV in the evenings. Right now, I have 3 gym days a week (my work/school schedule has spiraled out of control!) and do 45 minutes of cardio, usually an elliptical on high resistance, and then a weight training circuit.  I'm wanting to start jogging again because I want to run a 5k before the end of the year.

Weight Loss Exercise before eating, or after? Oct 27 2009
12:54 (UTC)

If I eat anything before a vigorous workout, I will throw up, so I always eat after.  I've heard that after you exercise (either cardio or weights or both) you should wait a bit before eating a meal, but should get some protein immediately... like a handful of nuts, a piece of cheese, or a protein bar if you want something more substantial.

I found some research that suggested that you actually burn less calories and build less endurance if you exercise first thing in the a.m..  For me, it seems valid because I don't have near the energy to exercise as I do if I wait until later in the day.  I get a much more vigorous workout if I wait til I have some energy.

Another perk of afternoon exercise, in my opinion, is that you can make up for any naughtiness earlier in the day.  If I gave in and grabbed a couple of cookies at lunch, it is easy to just add an extra half a mile.  Just a thought.  Good luck!

Weight Loss Sweet Tooth problems, any help? Oct 21 2009

I get mega sweet cravings, as well, and I have 3 things that I turn to:

1. Bryers 1/2 fat vanilla ice cream (doesn't have a bunch of preservatives and artificial sweetners and crap like most diet food, but is just made with skim milk and other reduced cal ingredients) topped with warm berries

2. A sweet cereal, like coco puffs or fruity pebbles.  You get your sugar craving plus get in some good vitamins and minerals.  If you use soy milk, all the better, because you get in some extra protein!

3. Get some reduced fat graham crackers and fat free cream cheese.  Top a graham cracker with a layer of cream cheese and be creative.  I've topped this with berries or reduced fat peanut butter and reduced sugar chocolate syrup.  This is going to have way more preservatives and artificial ingredients than the other 2 options since everything is "diet," but I've found that the graham cracker-cream cheese combination ends up being enough like a cheesecake type thing that it makes me happy if I'm craving a dessert.

Weight Loss Help, I don't know what to do! Oct 21 2009

I would agree.  I'm 5'6 and have stopped being able to lose at 125 because that is a healthy weight for a small framed woman at this height.  Your body is going to resist your efforts to become underweight, which is what you are trying to do. Focus on toning your muscles instead of dropping more body fat. Up your protein and overall calories and add some weight work in with your cardio.  As you build muscle the number on the scale will creep up because muscle is more dense and weighs more, but you will look more slender. Plus, the more muscle you have the more cals a day your body will burn, so you will be less likely to gain weight back when you go back to normal intake.

Foods Indian Food? Oct 07 2009

The issue is that I live in a really small town in Missouri.  There is not an Indian grocery, and our stores don't have all of the spices and ingredients I would even need to make a proper Indian meal.  I guess the next time I go, I could always ask them how the food is prepared (I am there so much that the waiters and owners know me-- it is a really small family run restaurant).

Weight Loss Could I really have gained 5 lbs in 2 weeks?! Sep 30 2009

Seeing this post this morning made me smile, because I am going through the exact same thing.  I weight myself 2 weeks ago and decided to take a couple of weeks off.  I didn't do anything horrible, but let myself go eat Indian food, IHOP, and have a bowl of ice cream or a glass of wine in the evening.  Yesterday morning, BOOM!, +5 pounds when I stepped on the scale.  But, I got to thinking: 1. Not watching what I was eating so carefully resulted in eating way more salt than normal.  2. I know I haven't been drinking enough water.  3. I know I didn't get enough fiber.

For myself, as well as for you probably, I am sure that all but a pound or two is a result of water retention and some backed up food.  The scary thing is that if you look at how horrible the food that is available at restaurants is (have you ever read Eat This, Not That, SCARY!), it actually probably wouldn't be that hard to take in 3000 cals a day without even knowing it.

Weight Loss What happens to the Biggest Loser's mommy pouches? Jun 03 2009

I think that there are many factors that play into how elastic your skin is, especially around the abdomen.  My mom has always been thin and fit-- I've seen pics of her in a bikini from before I was born and from what I can tell, she was always about a size 0 or 2. I am her only child, she only gained 30 pounds when she was pregnant with me (she was only 27 at the time), and she lost it all within a year.  Since then, she has stayed pretty thin (5'5", 135 pounds) and exercises 4-5 days a week for as long as I can remember (she is 50 now). But, seeing her in a swimsuit, she still has an obvious mommy pouch. Every part of her body is fit and in great shape, but that is still there.  For some women, it doesn't go away, while for others it is no problem.

Sorry to say this, but 3 pounds a month is about average for alot of people for weight loss.  Since you are not overweight, you are trying to lose vanity pounds, and they come off slowly for most (1/2 pound - 1 pound per week).  What makes people worry is that we see celebrities on magazine covers saying "I lost 25 pounds in 2 months!!!"  This is unrealistic. If you are losing about a pound a week, that may the rate at which your body is comfortable.  Start using the tools on here to get an idea of exactly how many cals you need coming in and going out.  Also, I am a vegetarian too, and it is easy to get way too many carbs considering activity level.  Start logging your foods and see how it comes out.  Good luck!

Weight Loss Stop Eating at 7pm? May 07 2009

There is nothing wrong with it as long as you don't wake up starving and make unwise breakfast choices.  When I have those long night classes, I always eat dinner early like you are doing, but put a piece of fruit or a fiber bar in my purse to eat halfway through the class.  I'd be starving when I got home if I stopped eating at 5 and then returned at 9, and would be tempted to snack before bed. But, if it works for you, great!

Weight Loss Alcohol + summer = eeek! May 07 2009

DO NOT DRINK TONIC!  You might as well have a real drink, bc tonic has lots of calories considering it is clear bubble water!  :)  Also, flavored vodkas have extra crap in them.  I do vodka, club soda or diet sprite, and a piece of fruit (a lime, an orange, a couple of cherries)... A shot of vodka is 55 cals, a serving of club soda is 0, and obviously a lime slice isn't gonna have much impact on your daily count!  :)  You can still lose weight and have fun, just realize that if you've had a night out you have to be extra careful the next couple of days and drink tons of water.  I've heard alcohol slows metabolism, too, so try to limit it to once a week or so if you can.  Have fun this summer!

Weight Loss Cutting carbs May 07 2009

Carbs help give you energy.  Where people get in trouble (and was has given carbs a bad name) is when you practically live off of carbs, like have them be the majority of every meal, but then spend all day sitting at your desk and then come home and be a couch potato.   If you are exercising, you are fine and need these carbs, but I would vary it up a bit in stead of having 4 slices of bread per day.  Fruit has carbs, any grains have carbs... maybe instead of two pieces of toast have some oatmeal with fruit in it, some yogart with granola, or a multigrain cereal (I'm thinking of Kashi).  If there is a day that you push it super hard with cardio, you can be a bit more liberal with your carbs, and if there is a day that you are relatively sedentary, you might want to consider putting your turkey on a salad instead of a sandwich for lunch.

Weight Loss Breakfast Question May 06 2009

Original Post by girlfighting27:

Protein seems to be the deciding factor for me. The more protein the fuller I feel longer.

Egg whites and cheese + Toast = thumbs up!

Kashi Go Lean Crunch (the high protein/fiber one) + skim = thumbs up!

To get more protein, I also like to use soy milk instead of skim milk.  I know that the health benefits of soy are debateable (I'm a vegetarian and it is one of the ways that I keep my protein where it needs to be), but I find that I stay fuller longer from my breakfast if I make my cereal or oatmeal with a high protein soy milk.  Like she (above) said, protein is the deciding factor for many people, because if you have the munchies in the office by 10:00 and someone has brought in pastries, bad things can happen!  :)

Weight Loss Yet another activity level question May 06 2009

I should add a detail, here:

When I jog, even though it is only about 30 minutes, I REALLY push myself.  I do sprint intervals, which is why 2 miles takes me 30 minutes because I alternate jogging moderately, sprinting, jogging slowly, and recovery walking for just a few seconds.  By the time I am done, I am extremely winded and exhausted.  My thought was that I should put my activity level to light and add jogging in separately... any thoughts?

I don't do granola, but I like to use Grapenuts to give my fruit and yogart some texture in the mornings.  It is still 200 cals, but less sugar and more fiber and protein.  Since I don't use a full serving, in my book, it is a good use cals especially since I combine it with nonfat yogart and fresh fruit.

I'm going through the same thing. When I go home to visit, my parents are doing the whole "You're getting way too thin, you need to stop trying to lose weight..." thing... and I still have about 14 pounds to go! Your parents are used to seeing you at a ceratin weight and may be uncomfortable in seeing your body changing.  Keep at it, and kindly explain to them that you have thought long and hard about your weight goal and would really appreciate that goal not being discouraged.

If have found that the gym is becoming unpleasant, why not strength train at home?  Do some pushups, situps, lunges, squats, planks, etc etc.  You can find tons of websites for strenght exercises you can do right in your living room.  Where are you hearing that running isn't a good thing?  I have started running and have noticed remarkable changes in the tone of my legs and butt.  They have muscle and are my favorite body part at the moment, compared to 4 months ago when they were embarssingly jiggly and you couldn't pay me to wear shorts or a skirt in public!

Make sure you are eating plenty of protein to nourish your muscles. Also, don't go to the gym and push yourself everyday with the same exercises.  Your muscles need a chance to rest if you ever want to see results-- overworking them will just make them sore and exhausted and risk an injury.

Good luck!

Weight Loss How do I speed my weight loss? May 01 2009
14:35 (UTC)

It isn't uncommon to lose your first few pounds very quickly during the first weeks that you begin dieting.  My first month I lost 10 pounds, but it has taken me 3 months to lose another 8!!!! Stress can be playing a role in this, because your  body produces unique hormones when you are feeling stressed, and one effect of these hormones is storing fats from your consumption.  This could be slowing the movement of the scale.  Get through these weeks of school without adding your weight to your list of stressors, and then start hitting it hard again when the semester is over.  Stay active-- go for a jog during a study break or make use of the campus gym.  Half a pound a week is nothing to frown at, it is a normal rate for many people.  These celebrities who go on magazine covers saying "Here's how I lost 25 pounds in 2 months!" are not a realistic model for weight loss in the real world. Stay motivated, finish the semester well, and celebrate little victories!  :)

Fitness Spinning Apr 29 2009
20:58 (UTC)

If you've been doing cardio and strength training with your legs faithfully for the past few months, you may have built up those muscles enough that the spinning did not cause them to go into strained, panicky, lactic build-up mode.  That in no way means that you didn't get a good workout, it just means that you have awesomely strong, fit legs!  :)   I've been jogging for 3 months now and used to be sore just about every day after I would finish.  Now, I am only sore on days when I do an extra mile or make myself do a ridiculous amount of sprints, even though I may be exhausted to the point that I feel like I might die when I am done!  :)

Like other posters have said, I would not use muscle soreness as an indicator that you have had a good workout.  Base your eval on your heart rate and the feeling that you are pushing yourself during the workout.

Weight Loss How would I pull off Atkins as a vegetarian? Apr 29 2009
20:11 (UTC)

Kate-

What you recommended is actually exactly how I eat right now!  :)  Glad to know I am on the right track!  I am a vegetarian for animal welfare... I only do soy milk, cheese made from organic milk, and normally don't do eggs.  On the rare occasion that I do, I buy free-range eggs from local sources that I know treat their hens well. I practically live off of green veggies, berries, oatmeal, nuts, peanut butter, sweet potatoes, and whole grain pastas and breads.

The reason that I was contemplating trying it is because I'm doing good at losing poundage but still have pockets of fat that I am quite unhappy about!  I am 5'5", hovering between 129-131, and would like to be down to 115-120.  Before anyone gets all uppity about how 130 is perfectly healthy for my height and my goal range may be getting too low to be able to maintain, I have a tiny frame (my fingers way overlap when I put them around my wrist) and this weight on me does not quite look as trim as I would desire.  I still have decent amounts of fat on my stomach, hips, and lovehandles that I would like to get rid of.  I had heard that Atkins was a great way to get your body to eat into its fat reserves more quickly, and that is why I was wanting to experiment with it.  Especially after everyone's helpful feedback, I am thinking that it is more and more of a bad idea, so I will just keep counting, jogging, and waiting!  :)

      Thanks everyone!  :)

Weight Loss Should I eat it or not? Apr 28 2009

I would eat them, but eat the calories in a light, healthy form and not junk.  Fruit is great, or some fresh veggies, but don't go grab a piece of cocolate, a handful of chips, or a scoop of ice cream.  Your metabolism doesn't stop at night, so you want to get in those calories to prevent yourself from going into starvation mode.
