Motivation What Could I Be Doing Wrong? Feb 12 2009

In 4 weeks you could have lost 2.8kg (based on a loss of 100g/day, which is what I achieve).  My advice - and you may not like this, is to reduce your intake and weigh daily until you see your weight reducing about to what I can achieve.  From there weigh every 3-4 days unless you don't mind daily weighings.

I'm not a big fan of exercise, if you do have any, find out how much energy you are using, many people lose at most 1/3 of their weight through exercise.

About vasectomies.

I have been with my husband since I was 21 and he was 19, I am 45 now.

We decided very early on that we were not having children. We could not get a doctor to give him a vasectomy.

Seemed they have some kind of rules that entailed him having kids first.

He had his when he was 39.

If any guys are in a similar situation, they should just lie to the doctor about having 3 children to 3 different women and are sick of paying child support.  I can't imagine a doctor requiring proof of the childrens existance.

how much does it cost to donate sperm for future use?

(that is not something i care to research on my work computer)

I don't think it's a good idea to have free vasectomies.  For many reasons, but the biggest is that having a vasectomy is a commitment, for life.  There needs to be some sort of system stopping guys just randomly getting them done, when they haved had a pregnancy scare.  Ideally, a guy should consider getting one done for at least 2 years before going ahead with it.  When I had mine done, I was on a low income, and the let me pay it off weekly.  It's not too hard to do that.

Sperm storage costs about double the vasectomy cost, and lasts 5 years, which is the probable lifetime of sperm.  Most of the cost is for liquid nitrogen.

Having been through the whole photography thing, I'd say: take lots of photos, read lots of book and magazines, and take more photos.  If possible, join a photographic club.  If you want to improve your photographic creativity, take a whole day and try to take 100-200 photos.  Also upload to http://zip.4chan.org/p/imgboard.html and ask for comments, you don't have to join up or anything.

A quote from the film Grease: "if you play, you pay".  I guess I'm lucky, I'm childfree which means that I got a vasectomy before I started having sex which could result in pregnancy (also due to my first partner having had a hysterectomy).

IMHO more men should take more control of their fertility and bank some sperm, then get a vasectomy.  Reversal is not guaranteed (especially after a few years or so) but it's better than nothing.  Unfortunately, I don't think I'll see male contrception (and I don't believe condoms can be considered contraception) in my lifetime, but when it happens, it will be a great day for men.

This whole abortion issue will be solved I think when abortion is not fatal for the fetus.  Lots of other issues will be created of course, but I think it will be a step in the right direction.

By the way, in my country (New Zealand) previous to about 1978 women had to go to Australia to get abortions.  Then there was this big political blowup and they changed the law, and you could get an abortion due to medical grounds, and that includes depression.  30 years later, you guessed it, abortion is about as free as you can get, although 98% of women asking for one give depression as a reason for wanting one.  It's too much of a hot potato, so politicians won't touch it, I can't see it being touched in the next 15 years.

There has been research where young men and women were wired up to a (non-functional) lie detector and asked how many sexual partners they'd had.  Then using another group, just asked without being connected to the machine. A third group thought they'd be answering anonymously.

Women who thought their responses might be read said they had had an average of 2.6 sexual partners, compared with 3.4 partners for those who thought their answers were anonymous. But those who thought they would be caught out by the polygraph reported an average of 4.4 partners.

In contrast, men's answers did not vary significantly. Those attached to the lie-detector reported an average of 4.0 partners compared with 3.7 for men who thought their answers would be read.

You want to lose 4.5kg in 10 days.  Let's see if it's possible.  By dieting, you'll probably lose about 1.5kg max.  That leaves 3kg in 10 days, 300g a day just by exercise.  300g of fat is 10,500kJ which for is about 4 hours running for a 75kg person.

I'm 44, have been sexual for 20 years and have 12 sexual partners, comprising:

3 medium-long term relationships

1 short term relationship, and an even shorter relationship

2 flings/friends with benefits

2 casual things

1 woman I had sex with 1 1/2 times (yes, it happens...)

2 women I had sex once with (not by my choice)

Peak rate in a 12 month period was 5 partners, longest without sex was about 3 years.

Weight Loss BMI - Its just plain wrong Jan 29 2009
10:29 (UTC)

Please understand that BMI is an approximation to describe how fat/thin a person is.  It has 2 variables: height and weight.  Most people can work out their BMI with a calculator.  Now imagine what a better BMI would be.  It would have height, weight, gender, waist, chest, wrist measurements, and age in there as well.  Can you imagine what the formula would be like?  Given that 20% of Americans can't identify the US on a world map, think about how many people would be successful in calculating what their value would be, especially if using a calculator that can't work out powers that are not whole numbers.

BMI is really useful in analysing large populations.  knowing that 35% of the population has a BMI greater than 30 is useful.

Weight Loss If heavier people have a higher BMR/RMR why do skinny people remain skinny without exercise? Jan 28 2009

I was like this, 20 years ago.  I attribute it to appetite regulation - my body knew almost exactly how much fat it had, and suppressed my appetite whenever it got above a certain level.  As a result, my weight (probably) never fluctuated, I don't know because I didn't weigh myself, I didn't even know how much I weighed.

You didn't follow what CC said but does it matter?  You lost, and quite a bit in just a month.  In my own experience, it's not what you should/could eat, it's how you feel about the level you're eating.  I'd be willing to bet that if you take 2 groups, one who lose 1 pound a week and know that they're going to take 2 years to reach goal, and another group who lose 2 pounds a week and know they're going to take only one year to reach goal, the drop out rate for the faster group will be more.  Maybe you could aim for 1700 and that allows for a bit of excess should it happen?

You've lost 4% of your body weight.  Congratulations!  Logically, I'd just drop my intake by 4% to compensate, which is about 1815 calories.  Fiddle around with that, until you reach a loss rate you like.

Please realise that BMI is an approximation about how to define how overweight/underweight a person is.  A better measurement is waist circumference, even better is fat percentage.

Weight Loss How to reach my goal by March Jan 28 2009
05:52 (UTC)
1

I'm doing this in metric - because it's the only way I know.

You want to lose 30lb = 13.6kg.  That represents 477,000 kJ or about 1000 apples.

March 13th is 3+28+12 = 43 days away.  In 43 days I'd be able to lose about 4.3kg, but that's without any exercise, just eating less.

So you want to lose the other 9.3kg through exercise, which is 216g of fat a day.  Using Calorieking.com as a very basic guide, 230ml of olive oil (which probably weighs about 216g, although I haven't checked this) represents about 212 minutes of running, about 3 1/2 hours a day.

So my guess is that no, that's not enough.  However, 13.6kg is not a lot, and 9.3kg is even less.  most people won't notice 5kg, so if you exercise the way you wanted to, as well as eat less, you'd probably be about 7kg above goal.

In answer to your question - a lot.  I'd say that most people are the same.  If the person you are closest to doesn't find you attractive, then it's obvious that it's going to affect you.

I'm in a similar sort of situation, I'm male, and want to be 66kg again.  My partner weighs about 145kg and is showing resistance to me losing weight (22kg to go).  I've got this fear that she's not going to be attracted to me when I'm at 66, so I'm not proposing until I'm there and know she likes me the way I'll be.

Motivation Motivation.. Once it's lost, how do you get it back? Jan 27 2009

At the end of last year, I got a cold.  Suddenly, for a month I simply couldn't be bothered even trying to lose weight.  However, at the start of the new year, my motivation came back, and I was away again.  Most people go through periods where they can't be stuffed losing weight.  It happens.  Just try and maintain during those periods, and when you come out of them, you'll be ok.  Losing the same weight over and over again is crazy, I know because I've done it many times.

I am experimenting with motivations.  My new system means that I cannot see a film or buy coffee at the supermarket unless I am the lowest weight since Jan 1st.  This sort of system may, or may not work for you.

Weight Loss How can i measure my percentage of body fat? Jan 26 2009
03:15 (UTC)

There are at least 3 different ways to measure body fat.  Calipers are the least accurate, but the least expensive.  Then there is immersion into a pool to measure your weight under water, some universities have the facility to do this.  Finally you can be 'scanned', much more expensive but probably the most accurate.

Don't forget that bodies get bigger, and heavier until the age of about 23.

There is one place you want there to be fat.  Your knees.  About 10 years ago, for some reason my knees lost fat, and now they can't be placed on each other when I'm sleeping.  Very annoying (although I guess I'm used to it by now).

I'm left handed, but strangely I play right handedly.  I figure doing the fretwork is harder than strumming, so it makes sense to play that way.  Paul McCartney plays left handed as well.

I'd suggest you try out both.  Even better, borrow two guitars, and restring one to be left handed.  Once you get a feel for things when you start learning the guitar, you'll quickly decide which is better for you.

There are 300+ left handed guitars on ebay right now.

Someone actually wrote a book where they'd asked hundreds of people what type of person they'd never date again.  I wish I knew the name of it.  Anyway, some of the responses were hilarious.  People who wore velvet, people who stayed in bed past 2pm, people who had pet budgies, that sort of thing.

For me, a smoker, owns a dog, or has/wants children.
