Vegetarian soy and my thyroid... Mar 12 2009

Well, I went to a doctor yesterday (I had an appointment anyway) and I asked him about the soy - thyroid connection... and he told me that there is no conclusive evidence that there really is a connection!  I guess it's hard to say... lots of articles lean one way, and lots lean the other... thanks for all the replies, though... I'm a really picky eater (don't really like beans, lentils, quinoa, barley... not to mention most vegetables!), so it's hard for me to diversify my diet... plus, with calorie counting, it's SO much easier for me to get something out of a box than to measure ingredients, add numbers, divide - doesn't anyone else find it a pain?

Vegetarian Going Vegan for One Week Mar 11 2009

My only suggestion is --- replace, don't eliminate!  I've had friends who tried being vegan for a short period and ended up feeling weak and passing out, because they simply eliminated animal products but didn't find alternate sources for nutrients (protein, B6, B12, calcium, and iron are big ones!)

Vegetarian Why did you become vegetarian in the first place? Mar 11 2009

We read The Jungle in a high school English class, and, though it is supposed to be socialist propoganda, it really turned me off from meat.  After that, I went to a lot of websites for PETA and other animal rights groups and looked at all of the nasty pictures (and read the articles) until I knew I could never eat meat again - I actually went straight to veganism, but then toned it down to just vegetarianism about 4 years later (4 years ago).  For me, it's the ickiness factor more than anything else - I just can't look at meat without picturing bloody carcasses and internal organs - eww!

Vegetarian Going from Vegan to Vegetarian? Mar 11 2009

I was vegan for 4 years, until the fated day when I gave in and tried a bite of cheese pizza... which turned into more bites... and then renouncing my vegan-ism!  That was about 4 years ago, and I am still definitely a vegetarian (and about 99.9% sure that I always will be), but I have gone back to eating cheese, ice cream, eggs, chocolate, etc. I had a little guilt about it at first, but I feel like it is SO much easier to go out to eat, go to parties, etc. now that I don't have to be the one who asks about the ingredients in everything (I always had a sneaking suspicion that they spit in your food when you ask these questions at some restaurants!) ... I know the facts about health, nutrition, and animal rights, and I fully respect those who are able to remain vegans, but it is difficult to maintain, and I don't feel too bad about giving it up.  Besides, some of the "replacement" foods I was eating before were less healthy than the foods I eat now.  ("Fake" ice creams, for instance, contain a lot of oils, while a skim version of the real thing is healthier.  Also, I'd rather use a little real butter than trans-fatty margarine.)  FINALLY, of course, NOTHING can match up to real cheese or to scrambled eggs in terms of taste - nutritional yeast is tasty, and so is scrambled tofu, but anyone who thinks they taste like the real thing hasn't had the real thing in a while!
