Clairelaine: Fast Chili - can of beans, drained. Half a jar of salsa. Mix together in a bowl and microwave. Top with a little cheese or sour cream. I do this all the time! If you want to- instead of sour cream, try a scoop of cottage cheese and black olives on top... soooo good :D |

this was so traumatizing- i basically witnessed the same thing a couple weeks ago: i was driving my brother to the library one night and, stopped at an intersection, a young couple on a motorcycle accelerated between our car and another and almost entered the intersection on an advance green for opposing traffic.... freaked us out and we spent the next two minutes talking about how dangerous reckless driving is, and my brother said something (jokingly) about how we would probably hear sirens in a couple minutes, since the motorcycle sped off on green and quickly passed about four cars in the turning lane next thing we knew, we come up over a hill and there was shattered motorcycle all over the road and their two bodies just like siezing and howling, meters apart... it was terrifying... fortunately there were already several people leaping out of their cars to help but i have no idea what i would have done if it had just been me anyway i was alittle shaken the rest of the trip to say the least- and my poor brother felt so guilty about having made that comment- we both saw the consequences of dangerous driving firsthand :( |

cucumber/peanut butter sandwich... lol kind of weird but very healthy and filling too (providing u use a hell of a lot of cucumber and only some peanut butter) roast some sliced eggplant to take with you! ...for a low cal veg i find it very carby/filling- you need a fork depending on how long you bake- but it is sooo good hot or cold and covered in tomato sauce also definitely soy/nuts |

Oh man... I get this.... I am definitely feeling apprehensive about the start of classes again this fall. I have been home for the summer and am so proud of losing 25lbs and even more than that, toning up and eating very clean and healthy. I really think I'm just going to have to have confidence in my ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle back at school, and my health is definitely going to have to be a higher priority this year. I think it will be tempting to blow off the gym for extra study time, or order a pizza after a night out with friends, but I will just have to remind myself that I will be much happier and more productive with the time that I do have if I am taking care of myself... good luck and i think living away from home will at least make it easier for me to control the food I bring home- and with my ubercontrolling mother out of the picture i can actually get excited about cooking for myself again :) btw i feel like i wouldn't mind joining some sort of college-age accountability group... lol?? im going to buy a crock pot and go from there... |

Grrr.... I was just out at a party and stupidly ate (some) mcdonald's and chocolate that i didn't even want, and i knew it as I was eating it... then came home and ate an english muffin with peanut butter and bunch of fruit... i was totally ravenous and didn't even have much to drink... this is epic so im hijacking- i kind of feel guilty because i overate for sure today, but NOTHING compared to the intense guilt i used to feel after something like this... i am thrilled because i think i have actually figured out a) how to forgive my self for these slip-ups b) am pumped to work out doubly hard the next day because i will have an extra push c) am slightly comforted by the fact that occasional overeating will keep my metabolism on its toes (last week i slipped up and ate a bunch of brownies at a friends and woke up the next morning having "lost" like 3lbs?!) d) had fun, and was at least conscious of what i was eating and how it wasn't even satisfying- hopefully an experience i will keep in mind next time i am tempted to "indulge"... i need those every once in a while to keep "reminding" me how great i feel on the "good" days, as long as I can maintain something of an 80/20 balance lol maybe i did drink a little... <<this is totally rambling... oh well, forgive yourself and move on :) |

My mother has chronic fatigue syndrome and needs much more sleep than most people because she is tired so often- she supposedly developed it as a result of getting mono as a teenager. So there's apparently a connection there, if that's applicable at all. Best, lahnals |

If you recently upped your calories after a period of undereating, the weight gain could easily be reflective of your metabolism adjusting. Please give it some time and keep eating healthy, balanced calories and reasonable amounts of fibre/sodium (especially if you are concerned about water retention/constipation)... the weight gain is likely not going to be permanent, and once your metabolism adjusts it will all even out... or your scale might just be really f***ed up...lol. |

hey! just wanted to add- and i have had my share of knee pain (xcountry thru high school, just getting back into it)- is that I notice a difference when I stretch both before and after running (i used to just stretch before and i would be stiff the next day)... are you weight training, too? i also just used to do cardio and it has made a world of difference now that I've been working to strengthen my leg muscles that way... way less pain and I've been seeing great results :) ohhh ya and i heart my Asics :) |

That all sounds ridiculous- its definitely eye-opening. Wowww. Off the top of my head: I was disappointed the other day when I found out that Harvey's chocolate shake is like 730 calories in that tiny 12/14oz? plastic cup... I really wanted a milkshake. It has been so long and I used to get them from Mcdonald's a lot *sigh* That is so not worth it. bummer. I drank some water. Oh and I had never realized before how much sugar/carbs are in lattes... I thought it was just like milk and coffee and how bad could that possibly be...? Maybe the actual calorie count isn't that high but I hate wasting calories on drinks. lol. |

| Weight Loss | Basic Question | Jul 13 2009 19:07 (UTC) |

calculator, since you're only 15, CCs calculator will not be appropriate for you... somewhere on this site there is a link (anyone?) for a calculator that is more "teen-friendly", and will hopefully let you eat more than 1200 and maintain that deficit (losing 1-2 pounds/wk is reasonable) ;) also! since you are still growing, you really should not go below 1500 (keep your daily deficit at 500 max), even if you are "sedentary". seems counterintuitive but you still need to eat to lose weight and keep your body burning fat... stay above 1500, and if you can, throw a little exercise in there, rather than reducing calories :) good luck! |

I second the advice about upping your calories/restoring metabolism/and THEN thinking about running a deficit... re: "backed up"... also take a look at your fat content. A reasonable amount healthy fats also help to move your system along, and though you appear to be getting lots of fiber, which is great, getting too much without enough water and fats can have the opposite effect and stop things up, sts :) |

hey there! sorry to hear about your injuries... god knows it can be frustrating to lose when your exercise is limited in that way... i don't necessarily have knee problems but i used to run a lot in high school without stretching properly, so i occasionally have shin splints... i find biking to be incredibly enjoyable and pretty easy on the knees when they bug me, while you still get that full range of motion. ..and get to go fast haha... could that be an option? im sure you can still target some areas for strength training and avoid injury, or at least abs and stuff, but its tougher with cardio, I guess... haha and i dont know how many 23 yr olds attend but you could suck it up and try aquafit classes... pretty low impact? :D good luck! |

Congratulations on the weight loss so far!! I have begun to start treating taking care of myself/being healthy as a real priority- right on par with the commitment of a job or school. I definitely can relate to my diet/exercise commitments getting lost during busier times, and it can seem overwhelming. You also strike me as a very driven and dynamic person- just try and remember that your health should be a number one priority, even if you are accused of bordering on obsession... ugh, simply because the quality of your lifestyle truly affects all other aspects of your life. For that reason alone, eating healthy and exercising should be more than an afterthought or just a short-term project that may or may not fit into that week's schedule. I'm sure it has been your experience that "wasting" time exercising and preparing healthy meals is more of an investment because you will ultimately be more energetic and productive with your time. Ah yes, and if I seem to be coming from a self-righteous place I am instead thrilled that in writing this I will take my own advice ramblings and remind myself of my own priorities... hehe no cookies tonight :) |

tuki23, fear of gaining weight should not be the reason you cut down on your exercise! take the advice and up your calorie level to boost your metabolism! it might freak you out at first if you can't shift the weight right away, but your body will adjust and, frankly, it needs to in ordderto be healthy :D your level of exercise is really great and you should keep it up, especially if you are enjoying it! if you continue eating the same low cals and exercising less you will simply end up losing more muscle mass rather than burning body fat, which would not be a healthy weight loss... good luck! |

Like a lot of you guys, I guess I have also struggled with grains in moderation- tried cutting them out almost completely for a while, because they always end up triggering overeating and making me want more staaarch... but I have started slipping them back into my diet, because I also work out a lot and need the energy/fullness benefits. I find that if I have like 1 small serving of whole grain bread/rice/pasta each day, and its early enough in the day, that suits me just fine and I don't get those cravings... also i loooove sweet potatoes and probably could not live without them :D So I guess my advice is to be very conscious of your serving size (so easy to underestimate with complex grainy carbs, in my opinion), and eat them earlier in the day, just to be safe haha (and stay the hell away from refined flours lol they make me soooo tired... u can really notice a difference switching to wholegrain bread/pasta/etc) btw... and this is along the lines of thread-jacking (but i jst feel ranty)... has anyone tried the new strawberry poppyseed chicken salad from Panera... OMGZOMGZ it is the most incredible tasting salad I have EVER had for only 300 delicious calories!! (huge and including chicken!!)... i was smiling and drooling over it like an idiot in the middle of the coffee shop today like i had discovered a planet... the worst part is that I'm from Toronto, vacationing in Florida, and will only be near Paneras for another few days :( oh well my parents have agreed to drop me off there when they go out for dinner every night... (haha i think i jst wanted to pat myself on the back there- maintaining and exercising on vacation woohoo go me)

| Weight Loss | What is wrong with my weight? Please help | Jul 02 2009 01:58 (UTC) |

You are probably right in guessing that you've damaged your metabolism by undereating for so long, and definitely need to be eating more than 1200 calories/day. (Also, please consider whether you are at a healthy weight for your height/body type or whether you are simply uncomfortable with your weight) I would suggest using the tools on this site to really just start eating maintenance calories AT LEAST and learn how to eat healthier... it will feel like this sucksss because you may put on weight at first, in effect shocking your body by bumping up the calories, but please don't let that discourage you from making the effort to change your lifestyle and eating habits. Try to focus on these changes, and once you've sort of repaired your metabolism you can re-evaluate your weight loss goals. It's great that you are working out, and water retention/muscle could somewhat contribute to feeling bulkier or your weight gain, but this is probably not a significant factor because you are taking in way too few calories to properly fuel your exercise... keep exercising and focus on getting enough calories and you will feel great about your body... maybe put the scale away for a while Good luck! |

6 ice cubes 1 banana 1 or 2 tbsp peanut butter 1 cup chocolate milk 1 can diet coke BLENDDDD (post or pre-morning workout breakfast shake... yum... coke really makes this one) btw this probably makes like 3 huge glasses of smoothie... so you could probably cut back on the ingredients for a normal serving size lol (less calories)... i was just realllllly hungry this evening and this reallllllly filled me up without doing too much damage lol |

OMG I LOVE that show!! I have no idea why... It seems counter-intuitive... For some reason I enjoy watching other people enjoy greasy and fattening food that I can't afford to eat... I get some twisted sense of self-righteousness LOL... Or maybe it's because I can pretend like I'm eating it :) |
