Weight Loss I must be doing something wrong??? Aug 09 2007

I have been reading on these forums for women not to drop calories below 1200.  Well I just read something in the news report:

  • Eat enough food - at least 1,000 calories: Your body and metabolism thrive on food, so when you fast, crash-diet, or restrict calories below 1,000, your metabolism will slow down in a response to conserve energy.
  • Maybe this depends on age but I am 54 and when I eat 1200 calories I don't lose.  I cut back to 1000 and I can lose two pounds per week.  But I don't know how old you are so 1000 may be too few.

Hi I recognize some of you on this site.  It is nice to chat with others who are close to the same age.  I will be 54 in April.  I have one husband, two children, and three grandchildren.  Work full-time and just cancelled my membership to the YMCA.  I thought the Y would be the answer but seem to do better on my own.  My mind says I am thirty but the body definitely knows it is is 50+.

The holidays are now behind us and it is time to get serious here.  I am truly considering quitting the YMCA and buying a treadmill.  It would be so nice to just be able to get on it at home and walk whenever I want to without having to worry about weather or going someplace.  Does anybody have a treadmill at home and if so do you use it?

Holli,  I think you have come to the right place.  People here are very supportive.  Losing weight is hard work, time consuming and let's face it...it is easier just to fall back into those old eating patterns.  The one fabulous thing that I see you have going for yourself is that you like to cook.  Now you need to find ways to indulge that love of cooking into healthier food choices.  Start with finding new ways to cook those old favorites that are fresh, fresh, fresh and low in fat and calories.  You can do it.  Oh and when you come up with some great recipes you can share!

I have been looking for this forum!!  So I can actually talk to people who are my age (over 50).  It is nice to hear some advice and encouragement from women who are older and most likely have gone through menopause.  I have always watched what I ate and tried to exercise (even though I hate it) and have managed to keep my weight down but when I went through menopause three years ago it seems no matter what I eat I don't lose.  Yes I am looking at the New Year to be a new beginning.  It looks like this forum lay quiet for awhile so I hope starting today there is renewed interest.  I plan on checking in very often for encouragement.
Weight Loss 2 glasses of wine each day - effect on belly fat? Dec 21 2006

Red wine may help prevent stroke damage

Red wine might work to protect the brain from damage after a stroke and drinking a couple of glasses a day might provide that protection ahead of time, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday.

There are many ways to improve heart health and I realize red wine is only one of them.  I know I don't need to repeat that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie to all of you.  Are some "foods" better for you than others...of course they are but calories are calories.  I like red wine (and occasionally a glass of white) because it makes me feel civilized.  I am not asking that you understand what I mean by that just accept it.  I am not a teetotaler and I am not giving up the wine.  What I am asking is how does one incoporate that into a healthy eating plan?

I too am a wine lover and drink one to two glasses of red wine a day.  I have read so much about the benefit of red wine for heart health and since I tend to have high blood pressure I take heart health very serious.  But at the same time I am not losing weight even though I allow for the extra calories of alchohol.  I exercise about 20 to 30 minutes "most" days and keep my calorie intake around 1200.  1200 is my goal after doing a lot of math to calculate what I should be eating to lose a pound a week.  Is it the wine?  And what is more important 10 extra pounds or heart health?

Another holiday party tonight (wine and cheese this time).  I love these get-togethers but they play havoc on healthy eating.  I know I can limit the wine and cheese but my problem is that I dont' want to have to do that.  I am driving so it is easy to limit the wine but the cheese and crackers get me every time.  Any advice out there?  Anyone else have this holiday dilemna?

Went to a holiday dinner last night and truly watched what I ate (although I drank a little too much wine) but still ended up with only around 1000 calories.  But this morning I weighed myself and I was back up to 142.  I think it is water weight because I know how sensitive my body is to salt and retaining water.  I tend to be an everyday weigher.  I wish I wasn't so addicted to the scales.

I am new to this post and it caught my eye because I'm just at 5'3".  I am proportioned well, weight is evenly distributed although I need to lose at least 10 and would prefer 15 lbs.  I am currently 139.  I think I am older than most of you and have gone through menopause which doesn't make you taller but definitely can make you heavier.  But beyond the weight thing here is my problem.  I am too tall for petite length slacks and too short for average length slacks.  But the petites fit good from the crotch of the pants to the waist and the average ones sit above my waist.  (Did that make sense?)  So when I do find some pants that actually fit I want to buy a half a dozen pair in every color they have!  LOL

I broke that 140 barrier and weighed in this morning at 139.  Yes I admit I hope it wasn't just a fluke.  Maybe just being part of this board is encouraging me enough to stick with it!!  I was really just going to be satisfied if I maintained over the holidays but now I am encouraged about the possibility of maybe even losing a little bit.  At this time of year so many of us (me included) think - maintain now - and then January is when I will make that New Year's Resolution and really hit the dieting and exercising hard.  But if I could lose a little bit over the holidays, even just a couple more pounds, maybe I will have a different attitude come January.  And by that I mean a more realistic attitude.  Anyone else have some thoughts on that.  I would love to hear them.

I am new to this club but will be checking in daily and hope to get encouragement from all of you.

I am sitting at 141 and looking to get down to 130 (or lower) but right now 130 for my age and height is very good.  But I seem to be stuck at 140/142 and just struggle to get below that.  I do exercise but not as consistently as I should.  I would love to buy a treadmill but want to wait for the January sales.  I really love to walk but will admit I am a fair weather walker.  If it is too hot, cold, or windy I would rather stay inside.  If I could lose a couple of pound over the holidays that would be good but my goal is really to not gain any weight.
Weight Loss at what point do you stop logging? Nov 28 2006

I do get tired of logging everything I eat and sometimes when I eat a salad it is hard to decide just the exact amount of every vegetable I have put in it.  At home I guess I could weigh every item although that seems tedious.  But at a restaraunt I just have to guess.  Does anyone else do this kind of guessing when logging?  Do you just estimate?

I am new also to posting.  According to the one website I should be eating 1180 calories to lose weight.  I have been eating between 1100 and 1300 a day and I'm not losing and I have been doing 30 minutes of cardio exercise a day.  Any hints for me?
