Motivation calling out to women 50+ Aug 04 2009

Wowie, what a popular thread. I turned 50 in March and it didn't bother me half as much as when I turned 40, when I was convinced that all of my good looks would instantly go in the toilet. Ha.

Now I feel FABULOUS. I joined a friend a year ago and hired a trainer at our local Y. Package deal with a friend was much more affordable. We worked with her for about 9 months, and I lost another 10 pounds on top of the 25 I had lost the year before. Muscle definition is starting to appear (Bye, bye, Bingo Arms!) and I can see it on my stomach, which is nice. Still the last place to go, so I'm carrying fat there. Grrr...I think if I lose 10-20 more pounds, it'll be good.

November I ran a 2M Turkey Trot, and to supplement the weights I try to run 2-3 times a week. It sucks, I hate it, but what a way to burn a ton of calories. Plus I feel so good when I'm done. I've set a goal to run in a 5K every month this year, thought I could hit a 10K but it's out of reach.

Anyhoo, I refuse to let 50 be anything more than a number. The fitness portion helps reduce future injury, osteoporosis, and even helps skin tone. Keep at it , Ladies! Whatever we have not yet done, we can do now.

Weight Loss So, after 3 months its still not working..... May 04 2009

It IS frustrating, it took me about 18 months to lose 25 lbs, then when I hired a trainer and started working out, I lost another 10.

The final 10-15 just won't come off and I'm out of tricks. Anyway, the stuff that took for-ev-er to come off is NOT coming back on, and I'm most happy about that. Healthy lifestyle changes and new eating patterns that result in slow weight loss are better than quick yo-yo dieting, especially if you're diabetic.

You don't say much about your workout routine, perhaps you need to add cardio to that???

You still hate running and you're up to 15 miles???
ARRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!

Not what I want to hear! Cool

Missamandak: I started out running small increments on my treadmill and continuously added a little bit each week. I'm almost up to four miles now (and still hate it but love seeing the calories rack up on the monitor). I LOVE LOVE LOVE to hike, was hoping I would eventually grow to LOVE running, but it ain't happening. I believe that it's just the fact that it feels so good when you stop...

Great advice here.

I am running my first 5K tomorrow at the fabulous age of FIFTY! I ran a 2 miler Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving and it wasn't bad at all.

I find that my energy level of the treadmill ebbs and flows, but am hoping the race adrenaline will kick in and make it an easier 3 miles vs a drag-butt day. I never know which kind I'm going to have and understand that most of it is nutrition- based. I will count on a wonder-banana~!

Someone told me what you ate as far back as four days ago can impact your performance. Frankly, I don't wanna have to think that hard about it!!!

I flew across the title "Running: Getting Started" by Jeff Galloway and it just arrived, used from Amazon. This book looks awesome, I can't wait to devour it this weekend. Lots of info on form,  AND diet AND fat burning.

The best way to make a diet FAIL is to deny yourself of the things that you like and your body NEEDs. Make it a 'ifestyle change' and you'll find success.

Well I am FIFTY (EEEK!) but refuse to accept that as a reason. It is not gas or constipation, it is excess tonnage. Wah.

Much more give on the treadmill, cushy surface, versus hard concrete. I found that after a few weeks of running outside or at the gym's track that when I got on the treadmill, it almost was easy (and I use that word very carefully...)

This may sound silly, but I am new to running...

It seems as though there are days when I can run 3 miles, without stopping and could probably keep going, and other days when I have to drag my butt to do 1-2 miles with multiple stops along the way. I'm not aware of any outside influences or being especially tired, etc., but it seems as though there should be some way to gain some consistency.

Suggestions/feedback welcome.

So you are saying it all comes back to more out go - less in go.

But at the same time, I still have this repository of el lardo. I guess everyone has their problem area.

My routine consists of a couple of core exercises, shoulder, triceps and back exercises with dumbells, and then some kind of cardio - usually at the very least 20-30 minutes of running up to an hour on the treadmill, which ends up being an hour or more per session.

Kind of a pain, but sometimes I go to the restaurant website and get the real calorie value.

I've found calorie counter to be off in much of its data, so I question how it gets in there to begin with. Even the packaging can vary from the real product to what is here...

Tricep kick backs.
I've done about 4 million of them in the last six months and the lunchlady arms aka granny flaps are going away quite nicely.

Weight Loss What's Your Biggest Problem You're Having Losing Weight? Feb 19 2009

Original Post by michellebrassfield:

I know I love the biggest Loser, well thats what I was thinking as well, but I am scared to eat more because atleast I havent gained I just havent lost.  My weigh in at curves is in a few weeks I am going to address it then if I haven't made any changes.  Since I have started this website I have noticed I am eating more carbs than anything else so I am also going to try change that as well.

It is hard to NOT eat carbs since fruits and veggies fall into that category. Just avoid pasta, crackers, bread in anything but small quantities.

I don't know what this tool recommends, but per the FDA, your intake should be:

45-65% carbs

10-35% protein

20-35% fat

I am surprised how much hidden fat there is in supposedly 'healthy' food.

My biggest problem is losing the final 10! Been trying for months. My activity level is high and I'm doing my recommended calories, but am in a major plateau.

I lost 10 lbs as soon as I started working out 3x a week, now the same pound or two comes and goes repeatedly. 150 ran across the scale one morning a couple of weeks ago, but I think it was just a practical joke. Haven't seen it since! Grrrrr....

I feel that way, too. I set my treadmill at a 1 or 2% incline per advice of co-workers who run marathons, but it still sucks outside. I'm wondering if my pace is faster outside as that's one thing that's controlled by the machine.

Seriously, I've been working out for 6 months and have lost only 10lbs, but I can't tell you how many inches I've lost (well, I can, but that's at home and I'm at work - it's pretty amazing!)

Hi, Clarice:

I do belong to the Y and have since July. There is no contract; the one I go to lets you pay annually, where you get a wee bit of a discount, or monthly automatic payments. You can quit anytime.

Another thing I like about it is they have an "AWAY" program where you can visit Ys in other cities. I work close to one and live close to a different one, and have been thinking about doing lunch time workouts at the one nearby.

Also, a friend and I buy a 10-package of sessions with a personal trainer that works out to be $17.50 a piece per session. If you ever priced a trainer, you know that's a deal! Now we are hooked.

Plus, like you said, there is a variety of classes, most of which are free w your membership.

Some are nicer/newer/bigger than others, depends on where you live. You can always get a couple of day passes and see how you like it.

Weight Loss Barely 1000 calories.... Jan 29 2009
22:50 (UTC)

This is great timing. I turned into a "Clean Eating" freak about two years ago, and have lost about 35 pounds in that time. I have ten pounds left to lose that WILL NOT COME OFF regardless of the fact that I've hired a trainer and work out at least 3x a week. Yes, I lost 10 pounds with her pretty quickly, then a screeching hault.

I just found this handy little calorie count tool this week and am learning quite a bit about my eating habits. I really am NOT eating enough. I  had no clue. I am allowed 1600 calories a day per this site, it's almost 4PM and I have over 800 calories left. I used to be on Weight Watchers and using up 18 points in a day was no problem. I'm surprised things are so different with calories.

After becoming so accustomed to my 'lifestyle change', it's going to take a new mindset to adjust and start eating more - staying healthy - definitely. I think adding protein is a great way to add calories for energy considering my work out regimine.

Anyway, I hope this is the trick to give my metabolism the kick in the pants that it needs!!!
