Yeah no doubt. There's some wicked local hills in the Kootenays anyways- if that's what you meant by south. My local hill (Sun Peaks) opened early this year, woot woot! Should be a sweet season.

At your height, weight, and activity level you are going to be able to lose on MUCH more calories than that.

Why not do it?? There's NO downside to eating more. In fact, it will only help your efforts now and in the long run.

My issue with the 1200 calorie diet is that I have yet to see anyone post a menu which includes the minimum recommended amount of grains/fruit, grains, dairy, protein. Not to mention the RDA's of vitamins and minerals.

There's also the fact that you cannot eat 1200 cals for the rest of your life. It is not sustainable. Eventually, you are going to eat more, and when you do, you are going to gain the weight back.

Why not lose weight in a more sustainable manner, allow yourself to be more satisfied, nurish your body sufficiently, and keep it off? Ask yourself, can I see myself eating this way for the rest of my life? If not, what you're doing is not going to work.

At 120 you are going to be at the very bottom end of a healthy weight range. If you ask me, it's a slippery slope. How do you know you're going to get to 120 and be satisfied? Just be careful.

Last week I stopped by my local discount clothing chain to see if I could find a pair of jeans, as my last remaining pants (size 10) needed to be manually held up pretty much all the time.  (Yes, I also need a new belt.) Since these size 10s were the smallest pair of pants I had ever owned in my post-pubescent life, though, I felt really stupid and conspicuous checking out the size 8s on the rack.  I guess I didn't feel like a person with a recognizable need for size 8 jeans.  But, I overcame my insecurity and picked out a few pair to try on.  Upon trying them on, though, they were baggy.  Gaping at the waist.  Sagging in the rear.  Flat out too freaking big.  WHAT!?!?!?!

I was stunned, but managed to collect myself and my almost-retired size 10s and head back out to check the size 6 racks.  I grabbed more jeans, scampered back to the dressing rooms, and they.   were.    all.     too.    big.

After one more trip to the dressing room, I managed not to die of shock and instead bought a pair of size 4 jeans!  This means that somehow, over the course of a year, I've gone from a size 18 to a size 4.

The real kicker, though, is that I spent the better part of the week feeling bad about myself because I was retaining water from a stupid medication.  Apparently I was so hung up about a pound of water that I didn't realize I was three sizes smaller than my pants!

Isn't it weird how you feel like you are being sneaky or something checking out the smaller sizes? Like surely somebody is going to notice that you don't belong, and you should really still be picking out the bigger sizes. Or maybe somebody mistakenly put the size 6 tags on the size 14's? Or maybe they are just making things bigger these days?

Self-perception is a powerful thing.

Yeah sorry I should have mentioned that, I'm probably a little more active but not too far off. Usually 3 days a week at the gym (including weight training), and one day of indoor soccer.

If I could offer a piece of advice, weight training should take priority over typical cardio. A combination of the two is obviously ideal, but if you had to choose one I would pick up the weights (if you aren't already-didn't see you mention it).

Oooh I love Dexter too.

I have to agree though that the first two seasons were by far the best, but I am really digging trinity this season as well. I wish Dexter would kill more bad guys though. Seems like he's slacking. I'm also not getting as much of a creepy sociopath vibe from him as I was previously (which I loved). I don't know if I like the new "evolved" version of him as much. Still love the show though- pretty much the only thing I watch on TV anymore.

If it gives you any extra incentive to up your calories, I am also 24 and 5'7". I weigh 146 now and am still losing on about 1700 cals a day.

The easiest way to get in more calories is to have a handful of nuts, use full fat foods (e.g. cheeses, milk etc.), use olive oil when you cook, put a tbsp of peanut butter on your apple etc. It is pretty easy to get an extra 500 or so calories a day if you choose healthy, dense foods.

Good Luck with your weight loss!

Fitness HITT: am i doing it properly? Nov 23 2009
17:30 (UTC)

Sounds like a good workout, but it's not really HIIT.

Your "sprint" portions should be no more than 20-30 seconds in order for you to go all out. If you feel like you can go longer than 30 seconds with DYING you are not doing it right. Also, if you can do 20 more mins of cardio afterwards, that a pretty good indicator that you have not done HIIT because you should be completely EXHAUSTED after 20 mins.

Here's the link for the HIIT thread which has some useful information.

Hi. I'm 39 (almost 40...OH NO!).  I do think I eat plenty calorie-wise.  It may not sound alot, but when you consider that I eat nuts every day, and they contain a staggering 600 calories per 100 grams, then this soon adds up.. In fact, I think I may have answered my question.  Perhaps, I should cut out the nuts?? The thing is, I am TOTALLY ADDICTED TO THEM! Also, the reason I do so much exercise, is because I sit on my ass all day long, as I work in an office, and the recommended guideline is 10,000 steps a day, which equates to 6 miles.  Therefore, I'm not doing that much exercise compared to people who have a more active lifestyle.  I just want to be happy, and I'm not happy how I look at the moment.  I really do appreciate all your help and advice.  Perhaps someone could suggest a menu and workout regime that could help to trim down my bulky hips and legs, as this is where I feel I have gained the most size, although it is not fat, it is muscle, which is much harder to shift. Thanks again everyone for taking the time to respond.

You aren't eating enough for what you're workout it. Have you tried the burn meter and the calorie meter. It may help you figure out that you aren't eating enough. Secondly, weight is not a true measurement of health. You really should get your body fat measured because it is a true measure of your body composition. It may be that you have added muscle and that is why your weight has gone up. If you want leaner muscle you need to do high reps with smaller weights.

But like everyone is saying be careful that you aren't being obsessive and striving for less than healthy weight.

 Ignore this. So wrong.

What is leaner muscle?

Just take at least one rest day a week, so your muscles can recuperate. Also, try doing HIIT on the elliptical, you get more explosive workout in a shorter time. You can do 15-20 minutes of high intensity instead of an hour of steady state, which will end up doing nothing for your muscles.

I'm sorry, but I disagree.  I can't believe you would claim it does nothing for my muscles!

heatherparks, you don't need to skip days for cardio like you do for weight lifting.  Cardio should be 30-60 minutes per day.  You might need to build up to using it that often.  Maybe start with 5-10 minutes a day.

 It's true.

On a deficit, without weight training, you will lose muscle. Steady state cardio will do nothing to prevent this.

That's not even close to enough food. Depending on your height, that may not even be a healthy weight loss goal for you. Regardless, you need to eat more, I'm going to guess around 2500 cals a day. That menu looks to be about 1000 ish. Not good enough I'm afraid.

I would:

    a) make sure you get at least one rest day a week (2 is probably better)

    b) considering upping your calorie intake to 1800 on workout days to see if that helps

    c) eat white starches before you work out- pretty much the only time this is acceptable, it give you a good energy boost for your workout

In your post a few days ago you said you were eating 1300 and I told you it was way too low and gave you a link to a website which will help you to dertermine a more reasonable calorie goal for weight loss. I know sometime it is hard to hear that you need to eat more, but trust me, you are doing major damage to your metabolism and overall health. This is also the reason you are not losing weight. You MUST eat more.

Posting another thread about the same thing isn't going to change that.

Weight Loss One Apple. Three Chocolate Chip Cookies. Nov 19 2009

JUST for the health? Really? A calorie is a calorie, but the source of the calorie is very important as well. I would say it would be okay to have some cookies instead of an apple once in a while for sure if that's what your craving, but of course it would be ridiculous to say, replace all your calories with unhealthy foods. What would be the point in losing weight if you end up sick, and frail, and deficient in almost every essential vitamin and mineral neccessary for healthy living?

With regards to your fish meal, if you are eating 500 calories through the day, and then had a 1000 calorie dinner, you are still only at 1500 cals for the day. I really wouldn't sweat it. But it sounds like you really need to be eating more throughout the day, especially focusing on protein and fibre. These will keep you feeling fuller longer, and prevent over eating later in the day. Not to mention the health benefits.

Fitness How do you do HIIT on the Elliptical? Nov 19 2009

Original Post by carmenxox:

thanks a lot guys, this has been helpful... still a little confused, but im sure once i play around on the thing a bit more ill be able to know what is "the hardest I can go" and whats a good recovery pace

the "HIIT" workout on the machine has the 90 sec recovery time at level 3 resistance, and the "sprint" at level 8 for 30 seconds

I guess you need to push yourself super hard for those 30 seconds and get as much SPM as you can, cuz otherwise a level 8 resistance is relatively easy at a 130-140 SPM pace

You're right, 130-140 would be too easy. I usually do a level 10 resistance, at about 200 SPM, for 20 seconds, then rest for 60 seconds.

Some people will tell you not to up the resistance for your sprints so that you can move your legs faster, but as amber110 mentioed previously, I find if you don't it gets sort of out of control, and the machine almost gets ahead of you. Plus, I can get my heart rate a lot higher with the resistance.

Good luck with your HIIT, this workout kicks my **** every time.

Fitness Question about reduced number of lifting days Nov 18 2009
15:09 (UTC)

Thanks for the input guys!

I know I'm not "wasting away", I just know that when you are losing weight without sufficient weight training you are inevitably losing muscle in the process. I just wasn't sure how long this process takes, or if just 2 lifting sessions per week would prevent this. Since I have been lifting for about a year and a half, the thought of all my hard work going down the drain freaked me out a little bit.

Thanks for that study too rwnorth! I am definitly going to show the other girls on the team. I have always felt that soccer (particularily indoor due to the smaller space), was at lot more anaerobic than standard cardio. Thanks again.

Foods 1200 calorie day Nov 17 2009

You're right, it absolutely depends on your height/age/weight, however, unless you are very old and very sedentary, you should still be able to lose on more than that.

Nobody is saying that you cannot lose on 1200 calories, of course you can. It is the damage that you are doing to your metabolism and health in the meantime which is of concern. Not to mention the average woman who successfully loses weight on such a restrictive diet is going to gain it all back as soon as they begin eating more (which they will because restrictive diet are not sustainable).
