Do not under any circumstance ever static stretch before strength training. Static stretching reduces muscle strength by about 25-30% for 3-4 hours, so static stretching of a muscle prior to exercise is a good way to reduce the training effect and possibly injure yourself.

Dynamic flexibility/mobility drills are okay, but no static stretching before working out, ever. Save it for after.

Thank you for the advise. I have been doing static before and after. Since I read this I looked up and found a new stretching routine to try before I run.

There are some stretches to do that will help, but if the back pain is too bad see a doctor of course. In addition to stetching my legs I have a neck stretching routine I use if my back gets tight. I also have one of those "Homedics" back massagers that works for me, it is the Shiatsu one.

Recently I overdid it myself and am taking a few days to a week off. I have a sore knee which I think is Goosefoot Bursitis. Bodies need little vacations too.

My trick for this is eating very low calorie food for the rest of the day. Steamed brocoli, light or air popped popcorn, raw veggies with salt or salt free seasoning or low cal/fat free dressing. One of the things you want to do is make a list of very low cal foods you like that will fill you up, then use that list when you binge or use it to PREVENT a binge of bad for ya food!
