I am 19 yr old female, 5'3 and 145 pounds. Daily with no exercise I aim to eat about 1900 calories, and so when I run for an hour I burn about 650 calories, my max intake should be about 2550, and on those days I end up eating 3000++ calories! That's more than I need really. As for what I eat... I've tried the fiber and protein... fiber sources for me include fiber one cereal, fruits and veggies, and the protein powder I use for my after workout shakes contain lots of fiber. Protein sources include the protein shake, cottage cheese (love the stuff!), hardboiled eggs (After two yolks I just eat the whites, b/c too much cholesterol), lean meats like chicken and turkey, and beans/legumes. Honestly, I would be happy with a smaller deficit on days that I'm working out hard, because I know that I'm going to be able to run harder/longer later, but I just want to stop going over! As for cravings... I'm craving salty foods! I monitered my sodium intake on the run day I described above, and it was very high! Practically 4000 mg. That's ridiculous, my blood pressure is probably going crazy. Is this really all in my head? I'm not eating until I'm going to explode, just eating when I'm hungry... |

Ah I see.... The only thing is I find that if I don't warm up for 10-12 minutes at the "resting" speed, then after I finish my hamstrings hurt like crazy! Almost as though I didn't stretch at all before my run (although I stretch for 15-20 minutes before and after each run). The whole heart rate thing is going be somewhat hard... because as I said before I can't get very fast (as I end up falling over myself) so I'm finding it hard to get to that high heart rate within the 30 second sprint. Any suggestions? |

Hi, I know you must get a ton of these questions, but would you consider the following HIIT? 12 min at 6 mph The only reason I ask is because I don't run very fast... I think I can get up to about 7.5 mph before I start tripping over my own feet. Thanks in advance! |

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I've tried the mini meals before... splitting up my calories and whatnot, but I just get even more hungry sooner. And I'm pretty sure I'm getting what I need to be getting... I stick with the 50/30/20 split of carbs, protein and fats usually, especially since this summer I am cooking all of my meals. And the binges aren't usually junk food, since I don't buy any. The only thing is I usually cook a large meal on Sunday, planning to freeze portions and have food for the rest of the week, but I end up finishing the food by Tuesday or Wednesday. And trust me this is a lot of food! And I don't have time to cook every night, so it's getting frustrating, especially because after a binge I feel like I need to restrict myself (which usually works, since all the glucose from the binge has just been temporarily stored), but I feel like that may just lead to more binging... Ah. this is hard. |

Hi jblarghp! I'm no fitness expert, so take my words for what you will. I don't know if you have access to a local gym with weight machines, but I know of a weight machine that looks like: http://www.donoliver.co.nz/images/CT-2027N%20 Inner%20Thigh.jpg After using it, my inner thigh muscles specifically are screaming. Hope this helps, |

Thanks for the advice! I think I will take your advice and start by watching what I eat more closely. It's just that I'm majoring in engineering and also aiming for med school, so classes are tough. I guess the heavy working out will have to wait until the summer =/ |

Hi, my name is Celeste and I just had a general question: How can I be successful in weight loss and in school at the same time? I only ask because I worked hard last year to lose about 20 pounds, but my grades slipped. This past semester I pulled up the grades to all A's, but I gained a lot of the weight back. Is there any advice as to how to balance my two goals? Thanks in advance! |
