Health & Support Natural way to quit smoking? Feb 25 2009

you have to do what works for you. And don't listen to non-smokers who tell you taking the patch or pills is a "quick fix". Its not and they don't know what they are talking about. You absolutely have to want it for yourself, and patches and pills can simply help you. My advice-take all the help you can get. I am quit for over 2 months now and took Champrix to help. For others-the patches help and still others are able to do it cold turkey. The most important thing is that you quit and stay quit. Do whatever you need to make that happen.

Foods Giving up Olean/olestra...wanted: Chip suggestions Feb 25 2009

i just recently tried the Baked Kale thing. I don't normally have problems with avoiding chips(more of a chocolate person) but sometimes I just want to munch. And a person can only eat so much air popped popcorn(or carrot sticks).

They don't taste exactly like chips-but a lot closer than you think.  And the calorie difference more than makes up for the taste difference. Just be careful because they go from "done" to "burnt" very very quickly.

Anyway, i think they are definitely worth a try if you love your chips.

Recipes Baking substitutions???? Muffin recipes? Feb 17 2009

I recently made these muffins. Pretty good, more of a breakfast muffin.  I put it in the receipe tool and it worked out to roughly 120 calories per muffin-not bad. They aren't very sweet though, if that is what you are looking for.

I am not much of a baker, so the only substitutions I dared to make are:

-replace the oil with applesauce(same amount). Used sugarfree natural applesauce and added some fresh apple pieces. I suppose you could do something with the sugar, but i wouldn't know how. Also, i think 2 egg whites could be used for one egg.

Fitness Is this speed-walking? And should I keep it up instead of trying to jog? Feb 10 2009

you should consider maybe that jogging burns more calories than walking, even at the same pace.  I used to only walk fast because i assumed I couldn't run-i never jogged before and I just thought i wasn't one of those people. But then i did a little research and read that jogging can burn almost as twice as many calories as walking.  Since I don't really like exercising- I wanted to burn as many calories as possible in the shortest amount of time. I started jogging-only a minute or something at first. It took some time to build up my endurance, but now I can run for 20 minutes or so at a reasonable pace.

just balance it. If you overeat one day, eat a little less the next day and get some exercise....you still need to enjoy life. The biggest thing is don't freak out about it-because that starts the downward spiral. Its just one day.

I like that too. But now, i use just a little butter and lots of seasoning. They make seasoning just for vegetables and it really gives them some flavor without all the calories.

well, i read most of the book today and I can't say there was a real AHA moment. I , too, did WW for awhile so the concepts are pretty similar. I live in Europe and WW's is a bit different here(don't ask me why). Most fruits and vegs were free, no points at all. So you sort of get used to eating a lot of them to fill you up. The book is all about choices....would you rather have one cookie or a whole fruit parfait? I do like the receipes in the book-much better than most of the WW receipes I tried. And its a lot about not just snacking on vegs during the day but actually adding them to your meal.

If you are familiar with WW, this book isn't going to blow your mind. But its certainly not going to hurt and might provide a little more structure and re-enforcement of those messages that sometimes it takes us awhile to learn!  :)

I would buy the book just for the recipes and new ideas-i am always looking for new low cal recipes(since so many of them are just BAD).

I quit smoking on Dec 30th 2008 and am still cigarette free. Plus, i am on this site to lose weight-you are right, its crazy to do both. But i lost about 20 pounds and it just took forever so it kept pushing my quit date back. Finally, i decided i really really wanted to be done smoking but i didn't want to give up my weight loss goals-i worked too d*mn hard to lose the weight. So, i am in the midst of doing both myself.

if you want a support friend, message me.

see ya guys later off to work

Going very stong!! I did cave and have one last Friday.. SOOO not worth it!! Tomorrow would have been day #14.. But I guess I am okay with today being day #7.. Let's keep it up!

can i join?? I dídn't see the original post(i am new). But i am quit for about 35 days. Still going strong, though my weight is stuck. but as long as i don't gain(which is still pretty hard) I am okay with it. I still have cravings now and again(maybe once or twice a day) but they are more passing thoughts than really bad cravings. My husband and I quit at the same time so we are eachothers accountability. Had a rough night last friday as I was at a work party and doing a lot of drinking and dancing. But I managed, and the hangover was less rough than normal.

one day at a time......

its sounds like you are really frustrated. do your best to distract yourself away from food. But, if your stomach is actually growling it means you are indeed hungry-which isn't good. I know its no chili-cheese fries, but eat some fruit or some vegetables. Drinking tea helps me sometimes too.

hang in there...we all have good days and bad days.....

its so weird you posted this message today, i just received my volumetrics book in the mail today! Tonight we had veggie mac and cheese.

i have to say the program is nothing too new....pretty straight forward and common sense. I like a lot of the receipes though....

my inspiration is wearing a bikini on my honeymoon and feeling confident..not necessarily perfect, but happy.....

this is a nice thread...its good to remind myself once and awhile why i am doing this...its easy to get caught up in the numbers or the food you can't have or the panic when you know you have to break your diet for work or a party etc......

Weight Loss Back again.. Oh and smoking.. Feb 04 2009
12:13 (UTC)

actually, stopping smoking DOES affect your metabolism. There are a few articles on this website that talk about it. Your metabolism drops a bit. You can burn up to 200 calories a day by smoking. Plus, of course, you want to eat some more when you quit. All of that can add up to weight gain. But it doesn't necessarily have to-the choice is always up to you. I, too, am doing both at the same time and it hasn't been easy. I am 33 days quit now and I have maintained my weight. Thats a major victory for me! Of course I want to lose because I am busting my behind and I all I can accomplish is not gaining. But for now, thats okay. For the first days I was eating everything in site because i was soooo uncomfortable and wanted to smoke all the time. But, after a few days I realized that i wasn't craving chocolate, i was craving a cigarette, so the chocolate wasn't actually going to help.  If you really need something-eat, don't smoke. You can always exercise a bit more to work it off. Its hard, but its possible to do both. Don't fall into the trap of failing at both though-if that happens -pick one. And i suggest stopping smoking.

Good Luck

we had an unusually warm weather day a few months ago and i pulled out my summer stash of clothes. I put on a pair of shorts that I never wore(comfortably at least) and a little tank top. I was shocked when I looked in the mirror-it was like i was a different person.

i have lost weight very very slowly over the course of years, so its hard to see real changes. I also get so down on myself sometimes that i am not yet at my goal, that it does me good once and awhile to remind myself of how far I have come.

Great to hear the other stories....

I can't tell you how many times I thought about throwing away my scale! I am completely obsessed. I weight myself every day and it alters my mood. I know its not good, but weighing myself everyday helps keep me on track. Sometimes, I give a rest on the weekend, but thats only because I don't want to see the bad news!!!

I have that problem too. Its just so much easier to stick to the diet at work because its more structured and less access to food.  I normally give myself either one "regular" meal on Saturday night, sometimes we even go out to eat. It is hard though.....
