Espresso has a much harsher flavor than coffee.

...Espresso IS coffee...

Agreed.  I drink my espresso black with no additions (although I will rarely get a cappuccino...but only because I live in Italy).  If I am in the US, I get high quality coffee and drink it black.  Yum.

Weight Loss You HAVE TO let the body stabilize? Nov 23 2009

A month should be fine.  I hit a plateau about a month ago, so I ate maintenance for a month.  I just started counting last week and my body has shed more than 2 pounds in a week (with a deficit of about 700 calories a day).  Granted, part of that is because there is physically less food in my body, but it was great to see on the scale.

Honestly, from what I understand, most doctors get little training in the way of diet and weight loss.  A dietitian would be better.

In short, break up with him.

You said it yourself- you aren't very compatible as a couple.  It sounds like this boy isn't right for you.

As a VERY happily married woman, I want to share something with you:

It shouldn't be that difficult.

Bawling, screaming, throwing objects, wishing you were dead- why do you even want to stay in this relationship?  It sounds like insanity.

You are right when you say it isn't his fault.  While talking about his ex-girlfriend is slightly weird, the other things are perfectly normal.  The fact that you freak out about it indicates that you are creating the problems in the relationship.  To be honest, you are never going to figure your problems out if you are dating this guy (or really any guy).  Continuing to date this guy is only going to impede your ability to battle your insecurities because you are currently focusing all of your energy on keeping your relationship together.  You need to focus it all on figuring yourself out instead.

I know this isn't the answer you wanted to hear but it's just my 2 cents.

Maintaining I really dislike small wrist=small frame. What body frame am I? Nov 21 2009

I agree that the fingers around the wrist thing doesn't work...that all depends on the length of your fingers.

The ACTUAL measurement of your wrist can accurately tell you your frame size.  I am an inch shorter than you and my wrists are about 5.75 inches and every calculator tells me I have a small frame...I'm fairly certain you are as well.

Welcome Basschick7!  We are happy to have you!

I weighed in this morning at 137!  I am quite pleased!  I think maintaining for a while really helped.  I  just started counting again on Monday and my body just jerked right into weight loss mode.  I shed 2 pounds in a couple of days.  That's what happened when I broke a plateau once.

Have a great weekend and a great Thanksgiving next week (to all the Americans)!  Naturally, Italy doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, but I think I am going to at least have something with turkey in it...and some pumpkin!

 Do you live in Italy???

Indeed I do!  I live in Rome.  I married a wonderful Italian man this past March!  I've been here since June 2008, and I studied in Rome for the 2006-2007 school year (which is when I met my husband).

I posted something about this a month or two ago.  Everyone told me to up my calories, but that didn't help at all.  I went to my doctor and she told me that it is just another symptom of this heart defect I have (not life threatening in any way).  It's called mitral valve prolapse.

I honestly think the best thing you can do is go to your doctor and get checked out.  It could be lots of things...low iron, low blood pressure, hypoglycemia or any number of things.

Unfortunately, there isn't much I can do about my lightheadedness, but I hope your doctor can help you!

Sorry I didn't post on Friday! I had a crazy weekend.  My aunt was in the ICU for blood clots in both of her legs, and it was iffy that she was even going to be okay due to intense fluid build-up in her abdomen post surgery (she had had a kidney removed due to cancer and they also looked in her intestines as well).  She isn't out of the woods yet, but she is doing better.  In any case, that plus the fact that my father-in-law was feeling really sick this weekend (chemo), so we went out to see him.  So, I really did not have CC on the brain until yesterday.

In any case, I weighed in today at 138.6!  I am so excited!  Two days ago, I was at 140, and after 2 days of counting and focusing on my water intake, I am down 1.4 pounds!  Yay!

I am with you both on losing 5 pounds by Christmas!  I would LOVE to be under 135 for my "wedding" on Jan 2nd!

We can do it!

I am 24 and my husband is 28.  We got married when I was 23 and he was 27.  I honestly don't think the age different has had any noticeable affect on our relationship.  Sure, he is more mature than guys who are my age, but that is, of course, a positive.  When we met he already had a steady job and I was going into my last year of college.  I suppose that put us in a better situation to get married.  But honestly, I feel like we are on equal footing regardless of age.

I thought I remembered more than one other time, but I suppose I was wrong.

I hope you don't think I was attacking you.  I think your rant is warranted.  I too get harassed on the street all the time (I live in Italy), and sometimes ranting helps.

Just remember that men who behave like that aren't worth your time or attention.  I do my best to ignore men who behave like that.  Often what they are looking for is a reply, so I don't give it to them.

Hold your head high and ignore the jerks!

I agree with KG.  He will likely tell you how he feels.

I started dating my husband two weeks before leaving Italy after studying abroad.  The day I landed in the US, he bought a ticket to come visit me.  During that visit, he proposed.  It wasn't a normal time frame for a relationship, and we had a long engagement, but he made it clear that he wanted me to be with him.

If he is really serious about you, he won't let you slip through his fingers.

I met my husband a little over 2 years ago.  I had to go all the way to Italy to find him!  I met him while I was studying abroad.

To be honest, about 1.5 years before, I had gone through an awful break-up.  I was totally comfortable being single and I had NO interest in having a long-term relationship (especially because I was about to leave Italy).  Well, it turns out, life had different plans for me.  I started dating my husband 2 weeks before I left Italy, and we were engaged 2 months later.

My advice is to focus on yourself right now.  Don't focus so much on finding a boyfriend.  I can't tell you the number of times I have heard someone say "As soon as I gave up and accepted that I wasn't going to find someone, he/she just fell into my lap".  I wasn't looking...I was happy with being single.  I was having the time of my life, in fact.  Out of nowhere, my husband came into the picture.

I think not focusing on finding a boyfriend also helps you find the right person.  I wasn't desperate to make him fit into my life...he fit into it all on his own.

The right man is out there for you.  You will find him!

Hmm, I would say try eating a little more and see where it puts you.  Try eating 3000 for a week and see how much you gain.  You can always go back to the 2500 if you are unhappy with the speed of the weight gain.

You are doing so well, Helen!

What method of Birth Control do you use?

I use the pill (specifically Yaz).  DH also uses a condom.  We REALLY cannot afford a baby at the moment...no matter how much we want one.

How long have you reallied on this method?

I have been using the pill/condom combo for a few years now.

Has it always been effective?

I haven't gotten pregnant yet!  However, I did have a scare once, but it turned out that I had missed my period because of intense stress.  But, I thought it was because I forgot to take my pill twice in one month and we weren't careful with the condoms.

Any side effects?

Not for me, but I know that some women experience side effects with the pill.

What do you know about IUD?

Very little.  From what I understand, they usually want you to have already had  a kid, but I could be totally wrong.  It sounds effective and worry-free though.

It is highly unlikely that you will falsely test positive.  There is a MUCH bigger chance that you will test falsely negative.  If you test today and get a negative, I would recommend testing again for at least 2 weeks (seeing as how you aren't sure when your last period was).

Like others said, no need to beat yourself up.  I too went through a similar situation about 4 years ago. I, fortunately, was not pregnant (it was awful because I had just been dumped too).  So, just to reassure you, you are not the only one and you are CERTAINLY NOT an awful person.

Take a deep breath.  You will get through this, I promise.

For the pain you might want to go to your pharmacy and pick up a lidocaine spray.  It will numb the pain for a while.  It often comes with aloe in it, but I would still apply real aloe to the burn as well.

Dear Crazy Lady in charge of the school where I do English lessons,

Yes, for the 100th time, we do need space to store our stuff.  No, the other teacher and I will not lug 2 stereos and teaching books on a bus and up a hill every week just so that you don't have to get permission for us to store our supplies in an EMPTY cabinet at the school.  You are IN CHARGE.  Just tell whichever teacher that has the room we use that we are storing our stuff in her empty cabinet.  No big deal.  And yes, I do understand what you mean when you say in Italian that I am "breaking your balls".  If you had any balls, I highly doubt my benign request would actually break them.  Not to mention, you are horribly rude for saying such a thing.

Speaking of being rude, stop telling me to translate your teaching recommendations to the other English teacher.  You aren't a teacher.  You are an administrator.  Putting me in the middle of the situation is also incredibly unprofessional.  She can make her own decisions about how she wants to run her class.

Also, stop randomly speaking to me in English when you know I speak fluent Italian.  You don't know the language, and it is irksome to have to deconstruct whatever it is you are trying to say.  The children speak better English than you, so if you think you are being secretive when you speak English, you are wrong.

Also, for the last time, I do NOT know anyone who wants to rent a room in your apartment.  You drive me insane in the 15 minutes that I have to spend with you each week, and I wouldn't wish living with you on my worst enemy.  Even if I did know someone who was looking for a room to rent, I wouldn't tell you.

Thank you,

Kaetlyn

The Lounge Does anyone see a therapist/counsler? Nov 12 2009

I saw a therapist for about 4 years (from 17-21).  I initially started seeing her for PTSD, and continued going because of other problems that cropped up in my life.  Nothing was more beneficial to me in that time.

I never laid on a couch, although I did sit on one.  The therapist sat across from me in a big comfy looking chair.

I would just go in and talk about what was on my mind.  She would listen, notice patterns, ask questions.  She often noticed things about my life that I did not.  It was always helpful to have someone completely objective listen to my problems.  My friends are great listeners, but sometimes you just need someone from the outside to listen.

Therapy is essentially what you make of it.  You also need to find a therapist who suits you well.  If you don't feel comfortable or if you don't like how the therapist interacts with you, try another one.  They all have different styles as well.  I got lucky and found the perfect therapist for me on the second try.  I will be grateful to her forever.

No matter what mindset you have, the media definitely influences everyone at least a little bit. I think a lot of people don't even notice the influence the media has on them because it is everywhere.

While losing weight initially, I did get kind of obsessed.  I have reached my goal, and I am maintaining. However, a small voice in the back of my head tells me that I should lose 5 more pounds and then I will be perfect.  But, I know that another 5 pounds will not make me happier or healthier.  I am perfect where I am right now.  I think distancing myself from active calorie counting has helped, even though I do keep a kind of running count in my head everyday.  I have also focused on strength training, and made gaining strength/muscle my focus, rather than losing weight, and that has helped a lot too. More or less, I have changed my goal from losing weight, to being as healthy as possible.

It looks really interesting!  Unfortunately, it is only an idea at the moment.  It's from a design competition, which means the person who wins just has to have the best design for something in a category...the actual product doesn't have to work.  My brother-in-law won a design competition here in Italy for something similar.

The problem with cookies is that they generally need butter to make them what they are, that is, cookies.  Butter is really what gives cookies their high calorie content.

I would recommend just eating a small cookie, and budgeting it into your intake for the day...besides, isn't eating the real thing more satisfying than some substitute?
