Weight Loss I have lost 25 pounds and soo close to goal...YET...I am SABATOGING MYSELF!! Nov 28 2009

Hi Tomtom:  I am almost exactly like you!  I started out at about 177 and I'm now at 150 (ish) and 5'5".  I started in January though and went through a period just like what you're talking about.  I kind of fell off the wagon for a while and although I didn't gain (I was at 160) I didn't lose either.  The problem was that I kind of gave up after I had a bad day of eating.  For some reason I almost felt like I had ruined everything and there was no point in continuing.  Since then, I still have "slips" where I feel ravenous and want to eat everything in sight, but even if I do, I always get up the next day and continue exercising and do everything I can think of to avoid repeating the mistake of the day before.  For me, making sure I have something to do always works.  If I had planned to stay in the evening,I make myself go out, even if only to windowshop or do an errand early.  By the time I get home I"m usually over the desire.  About the donut, can you compromise?  Have some light chocolate pudding or yogurt instead?  Have some fruit and go do something.

Maybe we could keep up with each other.  I am also aiming for size 6/8 but I'm about 10 right now.  Sure feels great!

Edited to add:  I just read Trustwoman's post above and I agree exactly!!!  Not necessarily for everyone, but I have experienced this my entire life until recently when I realized what I was doing.

Hi Cagey - the feeling better/looking better sense of accomplishment you feel right now is not only it's own reward but I find that it's also self-perpetuating.  You start to feel so much better in every way, the idea of pigging out; eating a whole pizza or a giant size bag of chips gets dismissed from your brain because you don't want to ruin the pretty and to keep the momentum going.   The only time I find things difficult is just before that time of the month.  I have a box of 100 calorie Toffee Thins in the freezer that for some reason I have no desire to eat except for then.

Sometimes people just won't take no for an answer! Some of it is cultural for certain people and some others, well it's almost like a personal insult if you say no.    Some of the excuses above are excellent but my favourite tactic which works 99% of the time is to say YES.  You heard me!  I say YES.  Then I politely hold the cake or dessert in my hand for a minute or two - then casually put it down beside me and rarely does anyone ever notice I haven't had a bite.  Especially if I cut a piece with the fork, smoosh it around just a little on the plate so it looks like I"ve at least broken off some to actually eat.  It's a total waste of goodies but I think my mental health and wellbeing is more important than worrying about how much it cost for my slice that I didn't eat.  You can also say you'll take a piece to eat at home later and just dump it in the trash on your way home.  Innocent

Sounds like you're doing some great training and working out there!  How long have you been at it?   Sometimes it can take a little patience before you see results - I know it did for me.  Once I got into a good rythym of exercise and eating well the weight started coming off.  I still have those periods of time though where I feel like I'm doing everything exactly as I should but nothing's happening.  This is when it's the most difficult to stick to it.  But, if you do, eventually nature takes its course and you will look great.  Don't give up!

I KNOW!!!  Poor Oprah.  I do think she is uncomfortable with her weight.  She consistently still talks about it and kind of shakes her head as if even she can't believe she got to where she is again.

I think things get out of hand when the trainers and food people aren't around anymore at the end of the day.  That's a conversation I think Oprah has to have with herself at 10pm or whatever time of day it is.  Going to the well-stocked fridge and eating too much of something, ordering something or going out for it.  I can totally picture it at a time of stress.  Giving yourself permission to have a treat and whamo, next thing you know.....

I would so love to have the people she has looking after her!  Turns out Oprah is like the rest of us and has the ultimate and final responsibility for looking good resting on her very own shoulders.

I was really impressed with your post and how you came to such a rewarding conclusion!  I totally agree with what you said and would also like to add something.  The thing is, if you ARE able to achieve being almost model thin or get to a size you previously thought you'd never attain, once the newness and novelty of it wears off, who cares??  Most people apart from your family and friends couldn't care less what you look like.  This is one of the reasons why you've got to do it for yourself and with realistic expectations.  Being skinny like Heidi Klum or Jennifer Anniston does'nt make you them or give you the life they have.  Most people don't care what you look like - fat or thin.  Do it for YOU!

Face and boobs for sure!  The most stubborn was always my thighs but now it's my tummy.  My thighs have miraculously shrunk due to strength training with Wii.  It shocked the heck out of me how much that made my thighs firm and shrink.  They were 24" and now are a little over 21".  Woo Hoo!  However, my stomach/belly looks like it's hardly lost any of it's bulk. Hello Lightfoot:  I just feel compelled to reply to you because I often go through phases like this too when I'm doing great with trying to get healthy and succeeding with weight loss.   I have a somewhat strange theory that I believe is behind my binges when I'm doing particularly well.  I think subconsciously, I have a fear of success.   I do genuinely feel that my life will be better when I'm at my reasonable goal weight of 140 (I started out at 177 and now I'm at 153), but I think there is some niggling little thought in my subconscious taunting me that losing weight isn't going to change anything so quit setting yourself up for failure and go and enjoy some food.  Weird huh?  Once I realized this, the binges didn't stop entirely but they are really slowing down and happen on a much smaller scale, like 5 twizzlers instead of a whole pound of them.  Besides, I know that my life WILL change for the better as I will be carrying 37 fewer pounds around each day, my heart won't have to work so hard, and as a bonus, I already look nicer.

One thing I've found for sure is that if once a week or even just once every two weeks, I eat something like 1 chocolate bar, an order of small fries or whatever makes me happy and then I don't seem to binge.

Best of Luck!

I agree it would be nice to print directly from the webpage.  My naturopathic doctor likes to take a peek at my menus once in a while.  I have tried cut and paste into Excel but every line gets squeezed into a single cell, then the next line, etc.  It's time consuming to separate each bit of information into separate cells again to keep the information easier to read and to sum columns.

I wonder if I would have been happier not knowing.  I looked up my Omega 3 supplment and you're right.  They're about 10 calories each.  So are the evening primrose oil.  There's another 80 calories to the daily stack....  At least it's not 200 like I thought!

Hi Foodie: You know what?  I don't think you could be all that off track if you decided to get back here before you regained all the weight you lost, and that you're ready to go again.  Almost everyone has a period of time where things just aren't going the way you want.  You know what you need to do and there are tons of people here to talk you through when you need it!  600 calories for dinner can be pretty satisfying especially if you pile up a ton of veggies.  You go girl!

Weight Loss Good for 3 days... then POOF! Nov 10 2009
18:01 (UTC)

Hi Angelpets.  Don't feel too bad, this happens to almost everyone.  Last week I had a licorice binge....  I've been doing some reading about my own eating habits and one of the books I've been studying is "it's not about the food".  It's about emotional eating and although I can't relate to all the issues she talks about, one thing that I personally found valuable was the author's suggestion to think about your hunger.  If you're hungry a few minutes or even half an hour after eating, ask yourself if you're really hungry for food or is there some type of comfort you are looking to feed.  She suggests not beating yourself up over it and to tell yourself that it's "interesting" you want to eat something in particular even though you just had dinner.  No judging, especially not of yourself.  It kind of forced me to think about what I was really hungry for.  Sometimes I found I was bored and food for me is comforting AND something to "do".   Just telling myself it was "interesting" that I wanted something instead of asking myself what's wrong with me actually helped.

Certain times of the month also bring out the cravings and once the period is over, I'm back to good again.

Sorry about the death in your family, it's not easy, even if you aren't the closest person to the one who is gone.

The thing that really got me going was the 10,000 steps program.  I was already doing about 30 minutes every day on my elliptical but I guess my body was so used to it, I wasn't losing weight anymore.  Great for your heart but discouraging if you aren't losing pounds.  I noticed a difference a week after I started the 10,000 steps.  It's like a switch was turned on for me and I didn't have to change anything else at all.  Just walk the steps.  It got me so motivated that I started doing all the exercises in Wii for Yoga and Strength training too.  Now my body is actually getting some defined shape.  THAT is motivating!  Wii Fit has a board you do the exercises on and on days that it's raining or too chilly to walk outdoors, I do the free step on wii while watching TV. Honestly, now that I see such a change happening in my body, I've become a little compulsive about exercising and get genuinely upset if something comes up to prevent me from doing it!  Long story short, success is a fantastic motivator.  Don't give up!

Try not to let it get you down.  We all have fluctuations in our weight, even on a daily basis, including what Amethystgirl posted above.  I know I gain as much as 4 pounds just when I get my period.  Not all at once, but over the course of a couple of days and it takes a week for it go away again.  It's terrific when it's gone, especially if there is an extra pound gone too which didn't show because of water retention.    You may have gained a bit more muscle mass which also can account for a little extra.  Don't despair - it's just how the process goes.

Oh sweetie, I wish you had asked that question before buying those things.  I don't think they'll hurt you, but they aren't exactly going to help you lose weight either.  Those acai berry ads are the most aggressive and misleading things I've seen in a long time.  It's sort of surprising the FDA or some regulatory body hasn't made them back off their over-the-top claims.

Well, for me it's like this - if you lose weight just for looks and not health, I kind of assume I'd do it the fastest, easiest way possible without considering how it might affect me now or in the future.  Diet pills, crash dieting, etc.  If you are being health conscious, you would come to a site like this and learn to eat wholesome food without wreaking havoc on your body to get a quick fix.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look good!  It just depends on how you plan to get there and at what cost.  Why the heck not be kind to your body and give it nourishment and respect it rather than just treating it like a hanger for clothes?

Hey Miss Healthisinplease!  Boy, do I know where you are coming from.  My number was 165.  I could not move past that weight for 2-3 months and it drove me crazy and even made me have some days of true despair.  Why was I working so hard - eating right, exercising, etc.  Finally one day I got pissed (mad not drunk LOL!) and decided I had to try something before giving up.  I tried walking in addition to the exercise I was already doing.  Just a few blocks in my neighbourhood at first and then slowly increasing every few days.  Anyway the result was that I started losing 1 to 1.5 pounds each week. Now I'm down another 10 pounds and it took about 7-8 weeks.

Maybe more exercise wasn't what you wanted to hear but it sure made me feel better once I saw the scale finally drift away from that hated number, AND keep moving down.  You're not stuck permanently, no make worry and good luck!

Fitness To Wii or not to Wii? Nov 09 2009

Hi Shelley!  I"m late in the conversation but I've been a Wii fit user for about 6 months now.  Last week I got the newer WiiFit Plus program which has some terrific features in it.  Mostly that you can do the exercises in specific order that you state and there isn't the rah, rah and commentary before and after each exercise, it just takes you from one to the next.  It's really great.

I do Wii Fit Yoga and Strength Training, all the exercises, every day.  Takes about an hour because I do some things twice.  I've noticed a huge difference in my body, especially that I no longer have any lower back pain.  It's just gone.  My thighs and derierre are so much firmer my brother said it doesn't even look like my butt anymore.

It's not the perfect solution for everyone but I like it because I hate going elsewhere to work out and can come up with an excuse why not pretty easily.  I never say I'll skip it today with the Wii.  I also walk very briskly (3.5-4.0 MPH) for about 90 minutes a day.  It's usually about 17,000-18,000 steps each day.  It was after I added the walking that I noticed weight dropping off like never before.  When it's nice outdoors, I put on my headphones and walk outside and when it's not, I can either do the rythym step on the Wii or on my treadmill while watching TV.  I faithfully lose at least a pound a week and if I'm really diligent about eating my 1,550 calories even up to 1.5 a week.

The nice thing about Wii fit is that it's got serious exercises for adults which the kids can also do, but there are also a lot of games that will keep the kids happy for sure.  I can't do the bubble ride down the river to save my life LOL!

Call me crazy, but when I crave snacks at night, I really like Danone Silhouette 0+ yogurt.  It's only 35 calories for 100 grams and has just enough sweetness in it to feel like you're having a pudding or something.  Lots of really nice flavours too like Pineapple Green Tea, Strawberry Banana, Tropical Mango, etc.  You can eat a small bowl of it pretty much guilt-free.

I also like Buttered Popcorn flavour Rice Cakes from Quaker.  35 calories each.

Funny this should come up.  Was at a get-together a while ago with all sorts of appetizers that I just didn't want to eat.  All super high fat or junk. However, there were sliced apples on the table too and I was so hungry I ate a piece.  For the longest time I disliked apples, mostly for the texture.  But that apple!  Wow!  The next day I ran off to the grocery and bought a dozen giant-sized Honeycrisp apples and eat at least one or two every day now!

It's hard to say which healthy foods to love because I love so many of them.

Hates:  Cottage Cheese although I have tried so hard to like it or even tolerate it but it brings up a gag reflex for me.  Same thing with oatmeal.  Want to love it but my body reacts against it quite violently.  Don't know why that is.

I have been restraining myself from saying anything about this reply but I get notification every time a new answer is posted and each time I see it, it annoys the heck out of me:

Original Post by frokusblakah:

Don't buy into everything you read on the Internet, can't believe I have to tell people that.

Most websites with claims about artificial sweeteners are hogwash trash.  Do your own research and make a decision for yourself, almost every person who comments on these threads, more than likely, read there (sic)  information from bad  (sic) source.

Its just as bad as the "lose ten pounds in 1 weeks" adds (sic), but for some reason people buy into them more often.

It's not that frok doesn't agree with me, it's the insulting tone of the post and the implication that anyone who doesn't believe aspartame is safe is brain dead.  I actually believe that people who blindly accept that it doesn't have any effect on your health are the more likely types to buy into the "lose ten pounds in 1 week" ads.  There is a lot of controversy over its testing, approval and "safety" that is conveniently left unmentioned.  On the other hand, if you're into aspartame, have at it.  It'll go really well with the genetically modified produce now available everywhere.  I feel sorry for people that aren't educated to question and believe what is spoon-fed to them just because some scientists said it was okay.  That's  what is "hogwash trash".  Ask who the scientist is working for, especially if there is controversy from their peers.

Weight Loss is Diet Soda bad for you? Jun 09 2009
02:14 (UTC)

The bad thing about diet soda is aspartame.  That stuff is seriously seriously bad for you and interferes with how your body processes and eliminates fat.  The soft drink itself won't add any calories or fat in and of itself, but the aspartame will affect and hinder elimation of fats you are ingesting from other sources.  Aspartame is in so many products, you have no idea.  It's insidious.  Many of the low-fat, low-calorie yogurts are sweetened with it as are lots of other "diet" foods.  It isn't trumpted on the front of the label, but if you look at the ingredients, there it is:  Nutrasweet, aspartame, sucralose and there may be other names for it as well.

I have a kind of a bug about aspartame even though the government says its perfectly safe.  Smoking was also good for you for about 100 years too.

If you can find sodas sweetened with xylitol, use that instead.  It's not calorie free but it doesn't have the same physical interactions either.

Health & Support What should I expect for the first visit to a nutritionist? Jun 09 2009
01:58 (UTC)

Polly!  I went for a nutrition consultation with a person who happened to be a naturopathic doctor.  She was fabulous.  By the way, in Canada, a dietician is a person who is a highly trained individual to assit doctors, hospitals and others with food issues.  Nutritionists, in Canada, do not have the same level of training and would perform the type of consultations Jenny talks about in her post.  (Some nutritionists are really good though.)  Okay, enough with the qualifications!

My first appointment for nutritional counselling lasted 1.5 hours and there were two subsequent followup appointments to establish a plan, etc.  At the first appointment, I provided a full medical history and copies of any recent bloodwork.  I just happened to have copies of the last two reports.  (Your doctor is obligated to provide you with copies if you ask).  We discussed whether there were any particular concerns with my diet and whether it was affecting how I felt on a daily basis.  I was having problems with bloating as well as a few other minor irritations.  She instructed me to prepare a food log and bring it to the next appointment.  She wanted to know everything that passed my lips, including water, supplements, food and alcohol.  It was great that I had been keeping track of everything I eat right here at Calorie Count.  I provided those to her.

The first followup appointment was presentation of the food log.  She quickly went over it and highlighted areas of concern which she pointed out to me there and then.  She made some recommendations, offered me a herbal cleanse (it was very good and did not involve anything other than taking the capsules).  She again asked me to do a food log for an additional week incorporating her initial recomendations but the real deal was presented at the third appointment.  She had taken the time to do an indepth analysis of the food logs I gave her in conjuction with my very recent blood tests to see if she could find any correlations.  At this meeting, she also made recommendations on menu plans, foods, and nutritional needs specifically for my body and tastes.  It was worth every penny and I truly feel better.

The cost?  Initial appointment $150.  Subsequent appointments $55 per 1 hour consultation.  I also purchased various supplements from her but I didn't feel any pressure to do so.  I was given a "prescription" for the supplement and I was free to get them where I chose.

It was a most excellent experience and I will continue to see her once a month for as long as the arrangement suits us.  Sorry I was so verbose but I thought you'd want to hear it all!
