Some lucky people in this world find that working out (running, long periods of intense cardio, etc) suppresses the appetite. I wouldn't worry too much about the extra deficit but if it becomes a regular thing, you might want to change your approach. Reducing calories too far, particularly when working out regularly, is a bad idea. You need your nutrients!

Weight Loss How do you do it! ? :O o.O Nov 05 2009
16:58 (UTC)

I've always been terrible at losing weight. I don't stay motivated for more than a couple weeks and I don't even like working out. But I'm doing it. From my heaviest weight ever, I've lost well over 50lbs.

This is what I do:

1. Get myself in the mind-set. I WANT to be healthy. I think about it, talk to the hubby about it, read about it, and most of all I find other people who have great success stories.

2. Food options don't change in this house. We simply don't buy chips, cookies, ice cream, etc. We don't buy much in the way of processed foods. We buy tons of produce (diet or not!) like pears, apples, pluots, squash, 3 -5 types of greens (like kale, chard, romaine, dandelion, spinach) as well as mushrooms, leeks, potatoes, broccoli, onions, carrots, etc. The list really goes on. This is the food available to me 24/7, diet or not. Fruits/veggies in high quantities combined with small portions of whole grains and lean protein (with the occasional dairy) will have you on the way to eating well even if you're not trying to lose weight.

3. The actual losing weight: Given the foods above, I try to back off the calories just a bit. I normally would eat around 2000-2300 calories in a day and I work towards eating only 1600 calories a day. Working towards 1600 means I always end up eating about t 1800. Every so often, I dip below 1600 and feel really proud of myself for it. This gives me anywhere between a 400 and 700 calorie deficit every day.

4. The exercise: I'm the first to admit I hate cardio more than I hate lifting weights. I try to get in at least 2 days a week of 30 minutes rigorous weights and core exercise with 30-40 minutes of cardio at medium difficulty. If I manage to do at least that, I feel extremely proud of myself. I also do a lot of walking. I walk the dog, walk with friends, walk with coffee, park as far away from buildings as possible, etc. It all adds up!

5. Maintaining weight loss: I fall off the wagon more than anyone I know. The KEY to falling off the wagon is maintenance. Falling off doesn't mean that I get to fall back into old habits that got me to severely overweight to begin with. It means I eat to maintain what I've done, about 2200calories a day, give or take. I do weigh myself most days and I do not obsess over fluctuations. The body can go 4lbs in either direction w/o actually gaining/losing fat.

6. Getting back on the saddle: this really goes back to #1. Get myself in the mind-set of losing weight. The wonderful thing about falling off the saddle is it gives your body a rest. If you talk to physical therapists (not trainers!) you might hear them talk about "rest and re-feed". The body needs both time to repair and get the nutrients back. On top of that, if you're trying to develop beautiful lean muscles, it's incredibly difficult to sculpt on a low cal diet. It CAN be done... its just extremely slow and in my book, unpleasant.

When I fall off the saddle, my rest and re-feed periods can run anywhere between 2 weeks to 3 months. The key is really in maintenance and understanding that you really can't eat the way you did before - otherwise you wouldn't be trying to lose weight. :)

Because I hate the process of losing weight so much, I probably avg about 15lbs of weight loss a year. I never gain it back.

I hope that helps.

Oh and one last thing! The best tool I've discovered is my cell phone! I found a background for my cell phone of a gorgeous woman with beautiful curves. I want to look like her some day. It's a little odd walking around with a very curvy swimsuit model as my cellphone background, but it was one of the smartest weight loss tactics I've ever tried.

Good luck!

Sunny

1. Favorite brand of tea and flavor: Genmaicha (green tea w/ brown rice, any organic brand) or Gyokuro (green tea found at Asian grocery stores).

2. Favorite brand of coffee and flavor: Oh tough one. Right now it's between Pete's Espresso Forte and Allegro's (Whole Foods House Brand) Cafe Midnight.

3. Favorite coffee creamer/whitener if used: Good ol' RBST/RBGH free half & half. Any brand will do, but if I have the $$ I buy Organic Valley. Best flavor, hands down.

4. Favorite addition to coffee/tea: Half & Half for coffee. Tea shouldn't really have anything added. It's tea!

5. Favorite carbonated drink if applicable: San Pelligrino or any unflavored fizzy water.

6. Favorite fruity drink: Unsweetened cranberry juice, straight or with a dash of soda water.

7. Favorite kind of milk (brand/flavor/etc): Organic Valley Whole Milk or 2%. Otherwise Sunshine Dairy isn't too bad.

8. Favorite Coffee Shop: Cafe Ladro, Cafe Vita, Zoka. (Thank you Coffee Capital of the World!)

9. Favorite drink to have with breakfast: Coffee.

10. Favorite drink to have with lunch/dinner: Green/Black Tea or soda water.

11. Favorite drink to have in the evenings: Lindeman's Framboise, any good seasonal red or amber beers, Red Truck's white and red wines, more tea!

Health & Support Diet/Exercise when sick? Nov 02 2009

I wouldn't do too much while you're sick. I think walking is about as much energy exertion as you might want. Remember, your body is repairing itself and until you've fully recovered it needs plenty of rest. If you're still restricting calories, your body will need even more rest due to the lack of nutrients its receiving.

Take it easy. Recover first.

I hope you feel better.

I made an extra trip to the gym. I don't normally go on Sunday but after looking at the scale this morning, I'm very glad I did.

There are only 4 pieces of candy left in this house and they're all in the freezer. Out of sight, out of mind. They'll be a pleasant surprise someday down the road.

Weight Loss Harder when the weather gets cold.... Nov 02 2009

Ever made a warm salad? If you really like salads, you can start playing with all sorts of additions of warm foods. Spinach is an excellent base for warm salads. Below are some things I might use:

  1. Steamed or Boiled Beets (not canned) Very filling!
  2. Steamed Broccoli
  3. Steamed Asparagus (if you can find it in the winter..)
  4. Flavorful rice (I add 1/4 cup right on top for a little body/warmth)
  5. Hard boiled egg (if you eat them)
  6. Any kind of warm squash! (Bake until just slightly firm. Works better for salads).
  7. Eggplant (I lightly cook these in a touch of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette).
  8. Spice! Add a little heat to your salad with hot pepper flakes or chili peppers.
  9. Warm Dressing: I find that good quality (not kraft/wishbone/etc) honey mustard or green goddess dressings are pretty good when served warm over a warm salad.

I completely understand how you feel in all this. When it's cold out, I tend to ditch fruit/veggies almost entirely. I have to very consciously make myself eat things like warm salad.

Have you considered finding a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group? If not, you might want to look into it. I get a giant box of fresh organic veggies and fruits every week and it keeps me eating them because I simply refuse to waste good food!

Good luck!

P.S. Like sukibahsoun says, tea is a good way to go. I highly recommend Genmaicha (brown rice green tea) if you can find it. There's another post on green tea:http://caloriecount.about.com/green-tea-ft155 406#4

Yes and no. I'm obsessed with food but I don't let it control me. If you're a foodie (I totally am) then I suggest you read a book by Michael Pollan called In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto. I think you might discover a thing or two about the foods you've been eating and you may gain a lot more control over "bad foods".

The book can be hard to sit and read in small parts so if you don't have a lot of time on your hands, I highly recommend finding an audio version (available at lots of libraries) and listen to it. The reader is quite wonderful. You'll never look at food the same way again.

Also, I HIGHLY recommend checking out The End of Overeatting: Taking Control Over the Insatiable American Appetite by David Kessler (I think that's his name). There is a little video on the amazon site that's a note from the author on the book.

I think it's really important for you to understand what you're eating and how it affects your appetite and your choices. You might be amazed at how you're programming your own food desires through what you currently eat.

Good luck!

300-400 calories is as low as I would ever go for a meal. If you want filling foods try fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds.

An apple with a slice of cheddar and a small handful of raw almonds is an amazing booster for me and about 350 calories.

Hey there,

My favorite way to find exercises is youtube! Yep, youtube. If you can find 'Plank Glute Kickbacks' and 'Glute Hip Lifts with side extension' they're both super simple to do and will totally get you into shape. I love the Glute Hip Lift with side extension in particular - if my thighs start touching while walking, it's because I haven't been doing these.

A good thing to remember: all of your muscles are interconnected! Don't focus too much on just your thighs. If you keep your core included, you'll actually be able to accomplish much more through more precise movements! Your workout will be much more effective and the results will come more quickly. I'd look for any exercise that works 3 muscle groups (abs, glutes, abductors) at a time if you want a quick fix.

Good luck!

(Post edit: I realize that the exercise names might have been kind of vague so I looked for a youtube video that had a good explanation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENCQhDiPCtA )

Weight Loss Green Tea? Oct 30 2009

Original Post by gdavids36:
By the way, I assume that you don't put any milk, honey, sugar, or anything in any of your teas, that ruins them.

Oh yes, please don't add anything to your green tea. If it's a good tea, you really shouldn't have to. If you find it's too bitter, either the quality is low, the leaves were scalded or both. I use a handy little candy thermometer ($5 or so at a cooking specialty shop) to make sure my water isn't too hot.

If you're brewing at 175 and find that your good quality tea is still bitter, try again at a lower temp and increase the brew time by a minute or two. Remember, presoaking in cool water for 30 seconds to a minute can relax the leaves and really help the flavor come out.

If you have a Teavana (sp?) store near you, that's a good place to ask for brewing tips. I would avoid buying tea there though. They have an incredible markup and it's really too expensive.

2 pounds is to small a variation. That's not fat, probably just water and intestinal content. Always weigh yourself in the morning right after you wake up, before eating or drinking anything.

Agreed. You should look at long-term changes instead of small fluctuations. The human body can gain 4lbs of liquid/food/waste.

Skip boxed cereal and go with oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat (farina) or any of the hot cereals. The nice thing about these is that they take time to prepare and time for your tummy to think about being full before you can make more.

Also, try adding a full portion of fruit to your 1 serving of cereal. Always wait at least 15 minutes after eating to decide if you want more.

Good luck!

I stop eating at 9pm but I generally don't get to bed before 1am. I guess that's at least 4 hours of awake time (plus 7 hours of sleep) and I rarely eat breakfast before 9am. I don't do "bedtime snacks". I think they're habit forming and a waste of calories.

To each their own! :)

Try portioning out exactly what you want to eat in a meal, sit down at the dining table or place you normally eat, and eat only that meal. Do not eat anything else except what you've portioned out for at least 45 minutes.  If you're still hungry after that, you can consider your options.

This is a good exercise in self control and the best way I broke myself of over-eating.

Weight Loss Green Tea? Oct 30 2009

I love green tea and I drink it all year long! There are some good things to know about it if you're going to drink for health purposes.

1. Not all tea is created equal. Choose whole leaf (usually loose) over bagged tea. Bagged tea is frequently remnants/scraps/leftovers. Unfortunately that means it can include stems and other plant parts without your knowledge.

2. Brewing. Green tea is best brewed at no hotter than 175 degrees. If you brew the tea at a higher temp, you run the risk of scalding the leaves which gives off the trademark bitter flavor. Take a cue from the Chinese traditional brewing: let your loose tea "rest" in cool or room temp water for about 5 minutes. Strain off that water and brew at desired temp. The soaking helps to relax the leaves and you'll receive a much better flavor (and nutrients!).

3. Choose a quality tea. Again, this is similar to the loose vs bagged tea. There are all sorts of wonderful green teas available. I highly recommend the following:

  • Genmaicha - Green tea with toasted brown rice. Perhaps the most common green tea in Japan. One of my favorites!
  • Kukicha or Kukimatcha - A delicate green tea either with or without added matcha powder (high quality green tea powder)
  • Vert du Vietnam - I realize this one is not widely available. If you happen to find it, it has a wonderful robustness with a rounded finish. I pair this green tea with everything from breakfast to dessert.
  • Gyokuro - The Grand-Poohbah of tea. This is by far the top on my list. Gyokuro requires special handling as its being grown. Just a sniff of the leaves and you'll immediately know the difference between that and the "stuff in the bag". This is the smoothest, softest and most delicate of the green teas. It's also what matcha powder is frequently made from. This tea is highly prized in Japan and has long been associated with good health. Don't be shocked at the price - a little goes a long way and per ounce of tea it's actually cheaper than coke or pepsi!!

4. Organic over "conventional". I think this one speaks for itself, but if you're not going to drink the organic stuff, you might want to give your tea the cool-temp soak/rinse before brewing. If you're concerned about health, you're more than likely concerned with the idea of steeping pesticides before ingesting them.

5. If you can find a good local tea shop, see if you can get samples. I'd avoid the "flavored teas." Some of the additives are quite scary.

Good luck!

Sunny

Weight Loss new hunger at night Oct 30 2009
04:26 (UTC)

Have you been eating the same things regularly? Remember, it's a good idea to get a very wide variety of foods in. Various vitamin deficiencies can lead to hunger and it's not something you can fix with a vita-supplement.

If you keep having trouble, maybe drink some water or tea (if that's not a problem for you before bed time). I try to skip food after 9pm and stick with tea but that's only because at that point, I've had my max calories for the day.

Good luck!

Weight Loss new hunger at night Oct 30 2009

Eating at night isn't a huge problem so long as you're not interrupting sleep to do so. Lots of people have all kinds of ideas about fasting while you're asleep, but as long as you're sticking to your allotted calories, you'll be fine.

If you're getting hungrier at night you might want to take a good hard look at what you're eating for dinner and when you're eating in relation to when you sleep.

On a side note, I always try to start a meal with a fruit or whole portion of uncooked veggie like an apple, pear, carrots, cucumber slices, etc. If I eat one of these things (full portion!) before eating anything else in the meal, I'll not only eat less but feel fuller longer. I know there's some technical stuff behind that like the fiber from the fruit/veggies changing the way we digest food. The important part is I eat less and stay fuller longer.

Good luck!

P.S. There's not a whole lot of nutritional value in lettuce w/ light ranch... :\

The Lounge Should Parents be Punished for Raising Obese Children? Apr 23 2009

When I was a kiddo and went to grade school, there weren't any options for soda, candy, fake/filler-foods. Parents were not allowed to send their kids to school with sugar-added foods. What ever happened to that?

Mind you, a lot of good that did in teaching me the value of a calorie... Here I am on caloriecount.about.com keeping track of what I eat to lose a few extra lbs. But in contrast, I was never as overweight as a kid as some of the 8 to 14 yr olds I see around my neighborhood. Simply amazing!

For a short time, there was a family renting the house next door. One of their children (the oldest) was morbidly obese as were the parents. The other two kiddos were barely overweight (5 or 10lbs max). I pondered that for a long time and never could figure it out.

All three of the kiddos walked to school every day. Hmmm...
