I prefer going to the gym more often than eating less calories, but if you're having a hard time getting there maybe you're pushing yourself too hard. If you don't feel like going to the gym one day: take a walk, clean your home, jump rope, go for a bike ride, or give yourself a higher calorie deficit that day (not higher than 800..I end up binging the next day if it's higher than that). The key is to keep a deficit...even if it's just light activity around the house, that's better than nothing, right? Don't set too high of goals...go to the gym twice a week and do other things during the week. Remember that it takes time, but it doesn't have to be hard: Eat your high fiber/high protein foods, move whenever possible, and give yourself breaks. I have a new goal of 10 more pounds for next year, but I'm relaxing now and maintaining the 30 I lost up to date until jan or feb 2010. Be easy on yourself and whenever you feel like it's taking too long or it's too hard, think of how great you'll feel this time next year when you're lighter than you are now! |

| Weight Loss | my scale sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Nov 30 2009 19:42 (UTC) |
|
I use both a scale and measure tape (once a month while losing, although I seriously need to remeasure now that I'm in maintenance mode). Having multiple tools of measurement keeps me stay focused and puts me at ease if one doesn't give the results I was thinking I would get. I weigh daily. I used to think that was excessive until someone on this site mentioned that the more numbers you have, the more accurate your trend is (the more stats = the more accurate). I realise there are days I fluctuate and I don't freak out. I have a better idea of what may happen during tomorrows weigh-in, so I workout a little harder before than and up my water drinking. I really think it's beneficail to weigh every morning. It keeps me focused.

| Weight Loss | Weight loss success?? Low carb or low calorie? | Nov 30 2009 19:36 (UTC) |
|
Lowering my calories, eating less-processed foods (I rarely order fast food...I'm talking a couple times a year & I eat whole grains) and like flogging ^ said: working out more. It's easier for me to hit the gym than cut back on the food. |

| Weight Loss | What is a reasonable amount to expect to lose each week? | Nov 30 2009 19:33 (UTC) |
|
I've heard the safe amount is 1% of your weight a week. Remember: Losing weight is not hard, it just takes a while. If you're expecting to meet a certain date to lose weight, you may set yourself up for failure. Determine how much you want to lose and lose it healthily, that way you wont give up or gain it back. |

Doctors "practice" medicine. Many of them do not have expertise in proper dieting. Sure he knows how to get you to lose the 10 pounds (800 cal), however, he hasn't told you about the binging and gaining the weight back. You know what to do...don't do what he says. |

My parents worked together for 15 years at my fathers company. My mother handled all the finances and was a major asset to the company, yet, my father was the "boss". They are now divorced. I know times are tough right now, but if you and your husband are working together and one of you is a higher up than the other, I think this could be awful for your relationship. Even if it's the same level, are you sure you want to share your days and nights together? Not that I don't love spending time with my significant other, however, wheres the variety in your lifestyles? Where's the spice if you're both doing the same thing? I think it's really healthy for a couple to have space within their relationship. I hope you can find somehting else! |

I used to take a Zumba class at the gym. It was taught by a very nice woman, although I felt she was unqualified. I thought the class was less intense than I would like for a "workout", however, I would often jump around like an idiot to increase my heart rate and work a little harder. I switched to boot camp after a couple months. If you like, keep going! All that matter is you're doing something you enjoy and moving! |

Break up with him. You're not doing him any favors by not hurting his feelings. Also, if you keep dating him, you may invest more than you wanted and end up getting more involved than you originally planned. Also, I don't understand what you're asking regarding "too old for bf's/gf's"? If you are not serious about someone, you're just dating. If you want a commitment and see if there's a future with someone, then I think bf and gf labels are good practice for what may come. If the idea of spending all that time with someone irritates you: You're not ready for a relationship. Have fun. You're in college! Plenty of dating potential out there! Worry about the commitments after school. |

I think that your grads and stress level are more important than losing more than a pound a week right now. At least it's only for about a month. Your plan sounds really healthy. You will still lose weight, it will just take a little longer, but with all the stuff you have going on, I'm sure the time will fly anyways. Good luck with finals. I just finished mine a couple weeks ago. I started maintaining end of sept and I haven't gained at all since...I don't count cals anymore, I just stay active now. |

Original Post by sybil878: I am going to see my doctor soon to take a physical bc I am concerned, like you, about dropping dead after a run. I certainly have not run as much as you (yet), but I have a hard time and there are runs where I don't feel that bad, but my heart is pumping really hard. Do you do any weight-training? I really feel that weight-training will help strengthen my heart. What do you think? Let me know what your cardiologist says...I really feel you understand how I feel! (not to say that I don't appreciate the advise from other members...you are all very helpful!). |

| Weight Loss | You HAVE TO let the body stabilize? | Nov 23 2009 22:40 (UTC) |

I agree with your doctor. According to articles I have read, successful maintenance of weight-loss has the best results after a "loser" has mini goals and maintains in between. Take me for instance: my first goal was to lose 30lbs this year. I did it, but I would like to lose 10 more. Well, right now I am working on maintaining my current weight until after the new year (started maintenance at the end of Sept and plan to lose again mid - jan. So far I have maintained my weight fairly easily. I know keeping it off when I'm completely done is going to happen. BTW, why not take your time? You said you don't want to push your goal weight further, but what if you ARE pushing too quickly? Do you want to risk gaining weight back bc you pushed to hard? Why not take your time, forget the date you have set and keep it off for life. Having a certain date in mind, in my opinion, is a recipe for failure (I've noticed a lot of people give up on themselves if they don't reach the weight loss by the date). |

My favorite part of yoga are the gentle sounds/music in the background and the meditation session at the end in "goddess pose". It's so relaxing. I normally can't be comfortable enough in a room with strangers, but during that time of the session, I find it hard not to drift asleep. Oh yeah, the routines are nice too :) |

Heart rate zones completely confuse me. I've read about fat-burn zones, cardio zones and the zone that limits the amount of oxygen to your heart (don't remember what it's called). What's the point of monitaring our Heart Rates and spending money on these electronics if they supposedly do not work? I know it sounds like they are not very accurate, however, I LOVE my HRM. I'm going to incorporate weights 2-3 days a week along with my current running (3 days a week). |

Thanks. I guess I do need to up the workouts. I do like running alot. It works well with me while trying to stay active. I enjoy it and want to get better at it. While training (in feb) I am planning on JUST training, not losing more weight...if it happens that's cool, but whatever...I will disagree with her about running not being an effective form of exercise for weightloss...I lost most of my weight this year because of running. I just want to increase my strength and endurance. I am weak, but I want to be better. I just want to be stronger and healthy. |

Are you saying that it's okay to run with a HR over 145 if I feel okay? When I ran with a heart rate of 180+ I felt like crap, but when I ran yesterday at 165 I felt okay, I just can't get my legs to go fast enough or long enough. Any thoughts on weight-training benefits for running? |

From my experiences of being hungry, it was due to:
I think if your body keeps telling you it's hungry (really hungry, not just feeling peckish) it means you have to eat more. What are your stats (age, height, weight, activity level...)? I think you're over doing it. |

Now that you're not "dieting" what is your routine like? I don't count calories now that I'm in maintenence mode, but to keep the scale from going up, I stay active. So, even though I'm eating more, I'm more active also. |

I've been in maintenance mode for the fall/holidays. I plan on eating what I want, but staying active. I have maintained my weight for well over a month with ease and without calorie counting. I just continue exercising and weigh almost every day to stay on track. It's SOOOOO much easier than losing! To bad I'll have to go in deficit mode come January. BOO! lol Here I come turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy... |

Good for you! Some things to keep in mind:
Anyways: instead of CUTTING back on things and restricting yourself, think of ADDING more HEALTHY foods. If you load up on the protein and fiber, you'll be full enough to avoid the temptations of negative calorie foods. Please make sure you allow yourself snacks. Nothing brings the weight back on like saying "no" all the time.

| Weight Loss | Fact or Fiction: you'll lose more weight by not eating after 8pm | Nov 17 2009 19:58 (UTC) |
14 |
Usually people say "don't eat after 8pm" because some people do gain that way, but that's bc they binge at night. People who binge at night (or anytime of day for that matter) typically binge because they aren't eating enough throughout the day, they end up starving themselves and when they get food they go overboard. With a late night binge resulted in not eating enough during the day, it may be harder to wake up the next day making people feel lazy or unmotivated. Eating at night is fine! Just make sure you eat enough during the day so you don't go overboard. I prefer to have my dinners around 8 anyways. I go to bed a couple hours later and wake up fine. Make sure to eat Breakfast, lunch and snacks before hand to prevent a binge! |

Original Post by kathygator: trust me, I understand. I was raised in the U.S. by immigrant parents from a 3rd world country. The sexism I endured was obvious. I understand that different cultures cannot help what they are exposed to, however, someone knowing how other cultures treat their kind (gender, race...) opens their eyes to what they DESERVE to be treated like. OP can't change this mans opinoin, but she can hear that we're on her side and feel for her. |

I think what that man said to you is absolutely disgusting, prejudice and discriminating. For some reason, making derogatory comments about gender is still considered okay. If that man said something about someones race he would be ostracized. Oh, and Jackass, oops, I mean jackattack: grow up. |
