| Fitness | Cardio vs Weight Lifting for Fat Loss | Jan 18 2008 15:22 (UTC) |

weight lifting and cardio are not polar opposites. For instance, try leg presses. your quadriceps and hamstrings are by far the largest skeletal muscles. after a couple reps, your heart will definitely be pounding, as if you were jogging. Bottom line, you can turn weight lifting into an aerobic exercise. |

If you want a REAL meal, get some 93% lean ground beef, brown it with some taco seasoning. make a burrito with some guacamole and lite sour cream, salsa and 1oz of mexican cheese. I think it comes in under 400 cal, but I guarantee you won't be hungry. |

| Weight Loss | I can't walk. I am so out of shape. I feel pathetic | Jan 16 2008 19:18 (UTC) |

I can relate, on a different level. I weight 240lbs and had knee surgery and broke my ankle. The knee is fine, but the ankle is rough. I find that doing an exercise bike, eliptical, recumbent [sit-down] exercise bike is the best when my knee/ankle are hurting. When you are really overweight, how long you exercise is more important than how far (fast) you do it. You should do a slow/moderate pace for AT LEAST an hour. I would do treadmill limitedly at first. Your pain is probably from joints and bones and not from muscles. the worst thing you can do is hurt yourself, because you'll stop exercising altogether!!
hang in there. |

| Health & Support | Can high amounts of calcium make you taller? | Jan 15 2008 13:59 (UTC) |
4 |
the only way I know how to get taller is to stretch. Yoga is proven to make people as much as 2" taller, but that is rare. Try this experiment: put both of your arms out in front of you. they should be the same length. Now, take a gallon of milk and curl it/lift it up with just one arm about 10-20 times. Now check the lengths of your arms. Imagine the muscles in your whole body tense like that. If you stretch, it will make the muscles longer! |

| Weight Loss | Any College Kids Trying To Lose Weight?? | Aug 02 2007 14:15 (UTC) |

| It's not hard to find time to workout: Regardless of whether you're guy or girl, you can do little things like pushups and situps any time! Yoga too; you don't have to do a whole yoga regimen, just find a couple moves you like and do like 10 reps. Another thing: DON'T TIME YOUR WORKOUTS! Do something that requires reps instead of time. When I was in college I found a lone set of stairs (about 150 of them, I went to WVU afterall) and ran up/down them 5-10 times. Whether it took 20 minutes or an hour, didn't matter . . . I didn't bring my watch. and I was in law school, btw, so if anyone didn't have time, it was I. |

| Weight Loss | Too Much Water Consumption? | Jul 24 2007 19:32 (UTC) |
|
| I eat 2500mg of sodium a day, so for me it's pretty much impossible to drink too much water unless I force it down. On the days I exercise/train I drink well over a gallon of water that day (that's 7lbs of water, btw). | |||

| Yeah, I'm just going by what prompted my weight loss to 230lb last time prior to class/work/injuries. I used to eat 2500 Calories/day. I'll start being more conscious about what I eat. | |||

| I don't know how much better turbinado sugar is for you than white sugar, but it's probably just some antioxidants or soemthing. I use it, though.
Another thing, don't use your brown sugar in a bag thinking that it's better for you than refined white sugar. All that stuff is is white sugar with added molasses. Kinda defeats the purpose! |

| Although bicycling only targets leg muscles, jiu jitsu is a full-body workout that uses core, legs, and shoulders. the first month I started going I almost quit b/c I was so sore. Now I feel fine, except for the sprained thumb . . . and broken toe (and the black eye that just looks like it hurts). I wondering if I'm not eating ENOUGH, considering this exercise. I drink ~120oz of water during and after each workout, and haven't changed my diet that much from when I was sedentary a couple months ago. I also drink about one-fifth the alcohol I did a couple months ago. . . . Considering that most of a person's metabolism comes from food digestion, maybe I should be eating more? I dunno. |

| Most every day I eat: whole wheat bread and/or Quaker oat bran hot cereal. And I eat one egg and one egg-white every day. Sometimes I put the two together and make french toast with 2tbsp of light syrup and no butter. woo! Or I'll put oat bran in with pancake batter to make it not so bad for you and actually add FIBER to your pancakes. It's awesome; I won't make them any other way not, actually. I seldom eat salad, unless it's one of those 1000 calories types at Garfield's or Applebee's |

| Popcorn is an awesome food, if you're one of the lucky ones who kept his or her air-popper. If not, I got one on Amazon.com for about $20 shipped; makes popcorn in 3 minutes. One oz unpopped has 108 cals and 4.5g fiber (and <1g sugar)? That's a good tradeoff. |

| If you like beer, drink beer, IMO. Bud Light to me has the same taste of budweiser, and yeah it's 110 cals, but Bud Light is like a staple part of my diet and has done NOTHING to prevent me from losing weight. I think there's way too much water in it to be harmful to your diet -- brain cells is another story. ;) | |||

| What the hell are you studying for 6 hours a day?! I survived law school studying like 20 min a day! LOL j/k. more like 30min. ;) But seriously, if you're a freshman, don't study freakin' 6 hours a day, unless you want to drop out and be a pizza delivery driver. I know this isn't that forum, but there's studies that show after 50 minutes, you don't remember anything anyway. So go run around your apartment every 50 minutes for 20 minutes. I wish I had done that, I would have studied AND exercised more, LOL . . . oh, i see. . . biochemistry. Well, sprint to one of the 4 labs you have each week. ;) |

| Weight Loss | at the end of my tether. plateau continues | Jul 26 2006 15:11 (UTC) |
2 |
| Hkellick is right; you should measure yourself.
I wasn't losing too much weight either in a plateau of sorts, then I decided to measure myself; lost 4 inches off my shoulders, waist, 2 inches off my neck. I have to be doing something right to do that. Also, keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you gain muscle, you might look the same size or even smaller, and still weigh the same, but that just means you have to keep it up! that muscle will increase your metabolism and you'll start to go down again. It has to happen. Phsysiologically, it's the only thing that CAN happen. |

| Weight Loss | Starvation Mode Myth? | Jul 26 2006 14:56 (UTC) |
|
| Good question, trevoseron; I eat 2200 to 2500 a day and I've been losing weight consistently for 6 months. But maybe I'm just a freak . . .
BTW - if I exercise a lot the previous day, I don't wake up hungry either. it's weird. Yesterday, I dug in my ditch (my favorite exercise, not by choice) for an hour or so, spent 800 cals doing it, wake up and still haven't eaten yet. I'll force something down, tho. gotta keep the metabolism goin' |

| Weight Loss | Does anyone wake up from sleep and eat in the night? | Jul 26 2006 14:40 (UTC) |
4 |
| Wait, LOL, are you talking about sleep eating?? The condition isn't funny, but I dont think that's what you talk about. No, you should NOT get up in the middle of the night to eat. In fact, you'll probably gain weight b/c you screw up your sleep cycle. On the same note, don't drink anything after 7pm if you're one of thsoe people who gets up to pee. Sleep is VERY important to weight loss, several studies are out now touting sleep deprivation as a cause for obesity. And, as I said before, it doesn't matter WHEN you eat (unless it makes you get up to pee, of course), so long as you stay 500 cals under the radar. If you mean sleep-eating (similar to sleep walking, but it tastes better), go see a psychiatrist. just my opinions - i'm no expert. |

| Weight Loss | The worst food ever? | Jul 25 2006 18:00 (UTC) |
37 |
| I've had one of those Monte-Cristos. They have 1440 calories, I think.
Try a Lumberjack special at Denny's; it's gotta have at least 2000 caloires, and probably 8000g of sodium. Worst food ever has to be buffalo wings, IMO. the sauce is terrible for you, the wings are good, cept they're 75% chicken skin, some are batter-dipped or breaded, all are deep-fried. I used to eat two or three dozen at a TIME! Hah! |

| Also Guafenesin (sp?) usually found with ephedra products sold as a broncho-dilator. I think guafenesin is a b-viatmin anyway.
So, if you take minithins, that may be the culprit. |

| Weight Loss | What time do you stop eating? | Jul 25 2006 17:53 (UTC) |
14 |
| From what I've read, it doesn't matter if you eat before you go to bed, so long as you stay below 500 calories of what you're burning.
Sleeping doesn't automatically make your metabolism stop, nor does it make whatever you just ate turn to fat or something. That's a myth. I eat when I'm hungry. That means, around 9am, then something small around 12-1, then I eat lunch around 1:30-2. Dinner I'll eat around 6pm, then I'll eat something 9, 10pm, maybe even midnight. It hasn't hindered my weight loss. |

| Foods | A low-calorie protein?? | Jul 24 2006 23:35 (UTC) |
7 |
| "low calorie protein" is a misconception, b/c the FDA has decided that protein has a fixed number of calories. Can't remember what 1g of protein has, but it's between fat and carbs.
But, from what you're saying, the best "low-calorie" (and inexpensive) proteins are eggwhites, tuna, 95% beef. they're mostly protein, they have a grade of "A" on CC and, aside from the cholesterol, it's the easiest way to get protein each day w/o sugar or a lot of fat. |

| Weight Loss | can you eat to often | Jul 24 2006 23:28 (UTC) |
1 |
| Here's the way I do it.
Find out how many calories you want to eat each day. For me, that's about 2100 calories. Then I try to reverse engineer the best way to hit 90% of that cals. Hopefully I can eat 4-5 times a day. if you do the 90% thing, you can eat as often as you want. and at the end of the day, you'll have time to eat again. Eating is the best way to keep your metabolism going, so it's a good idea to eat 4, 5, or even 6 times a day. |

| Weight Loss | Slim Fast ... what do yall think?? | Jul 24 2006 23:18 (UTC) |
2 |
| For breakfast, I'll have one poached egg, two slices of centercut bacon, and one slice of light whole-wheat bread and 16oz of coffee. Hmm, that comes to about 170 calories and no sugar . . . the choice for me is easy. ;)
But there's a reason shakes have been around for like 50 years; they WORK. if they work for you, then that's great. |

| Weight Loss | hungry before bed | Jul 24 2006 15:04 (UTC) |
9 |
| I agree too.
Some people will say "don't eat before you go to bed b/c you don't burn those calories!" That's not true. In fact, If you allocated 100 of your calories for before you go to bed and eat something, it could actually help your metabolism, since most of your calories burned happen when you're not moving around. So, my advice is don't eat anything, but skipping 150 cals throughout the day so you can eat a "Skinny Cow" while watching Adult Swim (like me) is not the end of the world. |

| Weight Loss | 1200 calories...is everyone sure?What if I blow up like a balloon? | Jul 24 2006 00:43 (UTC) |
10 |
| Warning, you will Gain WEIGHT at first if you start eating 1200 calories, just try to eat 4-5 times a day, like Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, each with 300 calories in it. This will build up metabolism, but for the first 10 days or so you may increase in weight, then starting going back down. Also remember to eat 500 less than what you spend each day. That means if you're only spending 1500 a day, you need to go out and walk for 30minutes (Geez!). Losing weight by eating less than 1200 cals works for 1% of people, and you're likely not one of them. |
