Young men at are a distinct advantage with weight loss and usually only to change a few behaviors.  I would suggest watching what you eat (cut out the junk: chips, soda and fast food)  and get active.  If you can find a sport to play in school that would be good.  Hopefully your school has an athletic program that offers a variety of sports you might like to try.  There are solo sports as well.  You can try biking, jogging, hiking...

I would also recommend a strength training program.  You can look them up on the fitness forum.  There are a multitude of exercises that you can do with no equipment; pushups are amazing.

You're at a good age to set positive life long habits. Many of the illnesses you hear about are from lifestyle choices. It's ok to eat junk on occassion but eat well 85-90% of the time and move everday.

The Lounge Question for people who don't live in the US... Sep 14 2009

I didn't vote for Bush and  I opposed the war vehemently. However, as citizens we are all responsible for the actions of our government.  I don't believe it's enough to say "I didn't believe in the war- or didn't vote for the administration" and then sit on my hands spewing anti-American sentiment.

It certainly isn't easy to educate ourselves, as we are often left in the dark and lied to.  Many of our politicians are corrupt and use the power we give them to vote for the interests of lobbyists rather than those they represent.  Oh... but we're too busy learning about the next sex scandal to really pay attention to what is going on.

It's all very frustrating...

"we the people" didn't elect the president into office back in '00.

Yes but he was reelected by the people in 04; no hanging chads then. Regardless, we only have ourselves to blame that he acquired that power in '00. Far too many are complacent and that is why we find ourselves in the position we are in today.

I'm an American, but feel the need to react.  I opposed the war, as did a lot of others.  It certainly appeared that diplomacy had not run its course.

Unfortunately, like so many instances world wide and throughout history, propaganda and fear prevent people from thinking rationally. Not to mention the unbelievable complacency that exists in the US today.

However, I think there is a general sense  that we want to do what is right; the majority voted for change. People are now speaking out about Afghanistan and the government appears to be listening, somewhat.

The founding principles and ideals of America are noble and  I'm insulted when someone calls my government "terrorists."  We the people make up our government.

America has done much good in our short history, but that good is overshadowed by our wrongs. I accept the world's criticism of US actions, but I find being called a "terrorist" a tough pill to swallow.

It's true that science is not always right.  They've changed agriculture to the point that we need to put nutrients back into our foods.  We're told not to eat processed foods, but even our fruits and vegetables are processed now.  It's no wonder we are all a bit confused.

Sorry for the rant...

I'm going to opt for eating in moderation and staying away from processed food to the extent possible.

"Are we human...or are we dancers?"

Who has the greatest to lose if the U.S. is able to offer an optional health care plan that's better and cheaper than the mega insurance companies?

Will these companies actually have to become more competitive and offer some of the things we desperately need?  Affordability, acceptance of clients with pre-existing conditions- just to name a few.

At the risk of repeating myself- Propaganda is an amazing tool- wondering who's doing the spinning???

Propaganda is an amazing tool.  Given the complexity of this health care bill it's no wonder folk's heads are spinning.

We have 50 states that have diverse health care options and trying to come up with a unified insurance plan option is a tremendous task.  There is so much confusion out there we have people on the news that think we are trying to nationalize health care, when what the bill does is offer a national insurance plan.  Granted I'm not convinced the government belongs in the insurance business, but that's an entirely different thread.

I'm thinking the comment, made by the "American guy on the news," was intended to be humorous   based on the bad teeth stereotype...

The U.S. also has a private dental and the plan works much the way yours does Andie- at least in Massachusetts that is.

Weight Loss Up your calories every 10 pounds lost? Aug 12 2009

Like jack said, you don't up your calories as you lose.  It's actually the opposite.  At 214lbs. you have more mass to move around- you burn more so you can eat more and still lose weight.  As you lose you have to lower your intake, as you no longer burn as much.  I think a lot of people make the mistake of undereating to lose weight.  At your current weight you can eat 1800 easily and still lose.  As you start to lose you can adjust that down a bit to continue losing.

Try not to make it more difficult than it has to be and you'll be able to stick with it.  Best of luck.

I found my attitude has a lot to do with it.  If I approach eating with the idea of caring for myself, then I don't feel deprived.  The more I learn about "food" and where it comes from the more I realize that junk food really is junk.  Reading "The Omnivore's Dilemma" helped me put things into perspective.

I'm not saying that at I never overeat- I just don't find the junk as tempting.

The Lounge Has Society become Prejudice against Men? Aug 11 2009

The school system does not support intelligent young women who desire to be strong, capable homemakers.

This would depend on the objective of the school.  Educating students to be informed and active citizens is the responsibility of schools.  When schools are successful in teaching individuals to think critically,  students are then capable of making good choices for themselves and the world around them.

There was a time when parents' were outraged that their daughter's were being kept behind in math and science.  Females are still the absolute minority in these fields.  When this changes schools may opt to add in more home economics courses.

I find this  an interesting thread because of the various points of view.  I can relate to "wanting to prepare food for the family" but I get frustrated if it's the expectation.  My feathers get quite ruffled if I'm running from pot to fridge and the SO sits at the island reading the paper.  I have been known to remove the apron and go watch t.v.

You may want to consider a combination of electrolysis (for face) and laser.  Everyone is different, but it takes an average of 6 sessions for laser.  It would be very costly to do it all at once so you might want to pick the most troublesome spots and move forward from there.

The Lounge Obama's healthcare ideas? Jul 26 2009

I agree we have issues with our health care system that must be addressed.  I don't think people really understand it until you've been forced to deal with it for yourself or a loved one.  However, I'm not for adding another layer of bureaucracy, as I don't think the government is capable of administering a health insurance program.

I'm glad that the current bill is not going to pass before congress breaks for the summer.  I believe the bill is confusing and our representatives need to come back and listen to the concerns of their constituents.

I'm not sure what community college your planning to enroll in but many have TRIO programs.  TRIO is a federally funded program for first-generation to college students.  They provide a multitude of support both academic and financial.  If you call the school's enrollment office they should be able to provide you with the contact info-if your school has a TRIO Student Success program.  I was about your age  when I started college and was also the first in my family to go.  It took some time but I now have a Master's Degree and I've never regretted a minute of it.  Best of luck to you!

There are so many factors that go into play here  and situations/people are individual.

The ability to financially assist your kid plays into it, but ultimately there is a "cut-off."  I can only speak for myself- growing up working class the cut off was immediate. However, I give more to my son because I can (Time and money). I'm sure this has had it's effects both positive and negative.   I understand the importance of self-reliance, and want him to reap the benefits of it, so I try to make  decisions about helping him with the end in mind.

In the end I want to have raised a decent person who cares for himself and others.

The Lounge Should Parents be Punished for Raising Obese Children? Mar 19 2009

EI your assumption seems to be that parents of obese chilren are ignorant.  That might be true in some cases, but the solution to this issue is far more complex than "force educational programs on these deliquent parents."  So many people know what and how to eat, yet they are still overweight.  There are a multitude of reasons why food is abused.  Often children use food as a panacea for problems they may have.  People who have been physically/sexually abused are often obese.

You have young child(ren) now?  Just wait... parenting is a very humbling experience.
