| Foods | how often do your grocery shop?? and when? | Jun 12 2009 19:41 (UTC) |

I'm probably at the store three or four times a week. I work right next to a bunch of groceries (Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Giant Eagle all within walking distance), so typically what happens is we run out of something, I stick a note in my pocket and go pick it up on my lunch break. Today was tuna and capers and apples. Monday will probably half and half. Oh and I'll probably go to another store after work for milk and yogurt, because I'll be walking by there on my way to catch my carpool ride, and it's easier to pick it up at the store near my pickup spot than to lug it all the way from work ^_^ |

Coffee, like anything ever that you might want to eat, is fine in the right amount (heck, even apple seeds have trace amounts of cyanide in them). I limit myself to one cup a day, because me and caffeine have a tenuous relationship in which I begin to crave it excessively, and then crash when I don't get it, and I prefer a more stable lifestyle. Probably the amount of coffee you would have to drink (especially if you are drinking it black) in order to really and seriously hurt yourself is an obscene amount that would be difficult for your average person to meet. If you find the coffee is disrupting your lifestyle, or has nasty side effects you don't want to or can't deal with, then you should lay off. The caffeine headaches are what did me in, in the end... |

You know, as I was writing the post I considered that too - that maybe I should start with a big, honkin' salad and see how I felt after that. Generally I like a whole lotta veggies and super-light dressing (you know, so I can actually taste the veg), and wondered if that wouldn't help. But I'm afraid if I try it, and still end up eating all the ice cream, I'll feel worse than if I had just skipped a dinner altogether... |

| Weight Loss | Can somebody explain why | May 14 2009 19:56 (UTC) |

I don't mean to be insulting to nutritionists - there are some very very good ones out there. But they are not doctors, and some of them have questionable educational backgrounds. I studied nutrition myself (still do, though now I suppose it's more of a hobby than anything), and have encountered some people with some very skewed perceptions of diet and exercise. As an example, my co-worker who used to be a professional nutritionist, and insisted to me one day that a lot of her clients lost weight when she told them to eat nothing but fruit before noon. She was adamant it was the fruit, specifically, while my mind calculated that it was far more likely that the fruit had far fewer calories than whatever her clients were eating before, and that the fruit was probably far more self-limiting to most people who aren't interested in eating a ton of the same thing all day every day. So, that particular nutritionist probably really believes what she says, but without further knowing of her background, I'd find it easy to question her statement. |

Shopping has become so much simpler since I started avoiding packaged food - my choices have slimmed down considerably (not buying fifteen different ways to prepare salt and gravy), so my groceries are frequently like this: Half and half Tortillas Eggs Bread Apples Coffee Sometimes I feel a bit like a pensioner on a fixed income - who buys things that simply, for real? Then again, the other essentials I buy in bulk and freeze, so I don't really "go through them" like water. I am excited about spring and summer, though - more fresh veggies for me, boss! |

Original Post by brtaylor: You know, I've noticed this too - I had a bit of a rice bowl for lunch, and one of my co-workers looks over and goes "I could never eat that little." I played it off saying well, I'll have more small meals like this than a few big ones, but really, it was a pretty normal meal. She had a huge plate of leftovers from a chinese restaurant for herself that day, and it looked like 2 or 3 meals to me. It was just a matter of perception - once I got used to eating less, that's what I ate. I almost never finish my meals at a restaurant anymore, because I get full (double-win, of getting 2 meals for the price of one now). It just struck me in an odd way that day, because this particular co-worker is actually quite thin. So sure, it's fine for her to have a huge meal, her activity level/metabolism differes quite strongly from mine. But I didn't really feel like I was eating a tiny meal at all... |

well everyone's got me pretty well pegged, so here's one of mine that no one has said yet:
Orange marmalade. Bread in the house tends to vanish, too, if I bring home marmalade. |

Original Post by freshbakedpi: lol ever since my mom described replacing the creme with crisco as a prank on her brother... the middle part doesn't look so appetizing anymore XD I didn't even think of cookies. I have two boxes of tagalongs in my bag... but they're my husbands. Which is fine by me - not fond of PB anyway. I'll keep dreaming of ice cream XD |

I always feel like things come and they go - some weeks are a struggle, and some weeks are a breeze. Usually if I have a bad week, I just keep trying until I get the time/space I need again. If you give up, you'll have 0% chance of achieving anything. Any time is better than 0%, right? |

more ice cream. I had half a pint for dinner last night (I know, not so nutritious, tried to make up for it by having a veggie dinner tonight) and am still craving more. |

You know what I hate? Fast zombies. It's like all the horribleness of a regular zombie, only now you can't outpace them simply by power-walking away from them. |
