| Weight Loss | Logging Exercise | Nov 25 2009 18:09 (UTC) |
|
Sedentary means that you are bed-ridden, ill, laying about stoned or drunk all the time, or generally in a coma. It means you sit or lay down all day. If you do any sort of activity as a normal healthy person will - you shop, you clean the kitchen, you walk the dog, you play with kids, you carry and fold laundry, you drive to work where you are typing reaching for things or going from office to office, etc but not formally exercising..then you are not sedentary you are lightly active. If you want to choose sedentary that's fine, just log every thing you do. Wear a pedometer all day and log your mileage. All regular household activity has a burn rate on the activity list - you can find household chore numbers for light, moderate, and heavy intensity. The problem with setting your activity level at sedentary is that you can be giving yourself a bigger deficit than you think - not a bad thing if you deficit goal was only 3-500, but if your deficit goal was 800 or more, then you want to be more careful. Try setting it at light activity and then add the big stuff and see what happens. |

it is one day, one meal. Choose the things you truly love and enjoy them. If you are having wine, have a glass of water first and then after before considering a second glass. Eat slowly and talk lots. Go for a walk before and after the meal. Eat a good breakfast/lunch before hand because saving calories for a deified treat or meal usually backfires into too much hunger and a binge. Ditto for eating those things you think you SHOULD have when you would really rather have something else. You will end up not being satisfied and feel like the day is ruined and then eat an entire pie because you are miserable. Enjoy the meal and eat well the rest of the time, you'll be fine. ps - your body needs carbs, proteins, and fat to be healthy. The thing is proportion. Easy to find that info here on CC with the search bar. |

cc really needs to reconsider accepting the colon cleanse ad, no wonder so many people are trying it so that the nasty stuff keeps popping up in the forums. |

there are many more things to watch for besides weight. Are your clothes looser? Are you feeing stronger? Can you walk longer and faster or with a broader step? Do you feel better? Does your skin glow because you are eating so well? Are you standing taller? Do you have more energy? The body has lots of changes to make when you are on a journey to health. Weight is only one measure. Everyone's body has its own idea as to what comes first and it is not always weight. Make sure you are counting your food correctly by measuring. Look at your entire day for movement so you can name your activity level - this is a difficult thing to do for the newly athletic and is easy to over or under estimate. Finally, pay attention to the other signs. Bet you see some if you look! |

| Weight Loss | are the celebrity diets and workouts seriously unrealistic? | Nov 20 2009 20:25 (UTC) |

Celebrities are paid to market the diets. If they eat and exercise in the way you describe, they will not feel any better than you did. They do have lots of people applying gobs of makeup, using special lighting, and photo touchups to reproduce a "healthly" glow. But when the camera's turned off, they crash and burn. |

| Recipes | Thanksgiving countdown! | Nov 20 2009 16:21 (UTC) |
|
I ordered a fresh natural bird. Never had any but frozen before and am looking forward to noticing if they taste different. It will be roasted in the oven using a recipe I found on line - the turkey is stuffed with already warm stuffing, sprinkled with herbs, draped with fatty bacon which marinades the thing, and wrapped tightly in foil. I will do most pre-making on Weds - cornbread for stuffing, butterflake pull-a-part rolls done to the point of brown and serve, also will do the pumpkin pie...or pecan depending upon what people want. I am a serious list maker and am still constructing the list. We have no extended family nearby so we always invite friends, especially loner friends. My list begins with a question to everyone invited - "what is the food that you love most at the dinner table for Thanksgiving". Once I have that list all I have to do is check for things to round out the colors and tastes. Then comes the final list complete with days of the week for shopping and precise times for preparation. Love Thanksgiving! |

| The Lounge | Rogers phone ads? | Nov 16 2009 03:23 (UTC) |

all the ads that do not sit quietly by the side of the page totally still are annoying. I am particularly revolted by the gaping mouths with discolored teeth and either dental instruments or objects held between same. I note and will never purchase a product that uses annoyance as a means of getting into your brain. Unfortunately, it is a proven marketing technique. Only way to stop it is if the majority of folk won't purchase products advertised in that way and that is unlikely to happen. Have a new computer and haven't downloaded Mozilla Firefox and the Ad Block Plus add on yet. Once I do I will not have to look at them again - Mozilla is a resource hog, so I only use it for calorie count. You should try it. |

| Foods | Ggori Gom Tang (Ox Tail Soup) | Nov 16 2009 03:16 (UTC) |
|
ox-tail comes in nice little cut up chunks just like other meats do. I use them to make a particularly rich pasta sauce - browned and then simmered in the sauce. I like to use the smaller pieces as it is easier to eat the meat. But it is usually packaged with a series of descending sizes and would be useful as a flavor adding meat/bone like any other cut used for soups. It's really no different than a traditional cut of meat. |

| Calorie Count | Comments on recipes. | Nov 15 2009 15:42 (UTC) |
|
I have mixed feelings about that. It is nice to know that a recipe is proven or one to avoid, however, any commentary on recipes would require extensive moderating in order to keep the mean spirited at bay. What would you think if you posted a favorite recipe and it was insulted for all to see by someone with different tastes in food? There are plenty of alternatives already available at CC. If they are you own recipes you can note that it is fab or needs tweaking in the note section. If it's not your recipe and you like it and want others to know, post the link in your journal or in the recipe forum and lavish praise. If you are searching for good recipes and want one that is proven, talk about it with your friends in journals and groups or start Threads with the request. |

I've made mini pizzas on whole wheat English muffins. Yummy, and if you like cheese on pizza and that's the taste you are going for you'll find it doesn't take much cheese to cover a muffin half - so use the real stuff so you get the melty yum. Add some veges slices like onion, raw sweet or roasted red pepper, mushroom, and sauce and toast in a toaster oven. |

I do not put restrictions on what food I can eat. No food is bad. No food is always elevated to an untouchable status except as reward, or cheat, or binge. By mindfully expanding my food choices (adding all sorts of new fruits veges grains beans recipes etc) rather than restricting, I lost 22 pounds really very easily. I am always on the lookout for great new foods and recipes and they don't always have an emphasis on low calorie. If you eat well and eat what you love you will not have to worry about changing how you eat for maintenance. You'll just change the portions a little bit. Food is a feast for all your senses as well as nourishment for your soul and body. It provides only one of the elements of shared experience for a gathering of family and friends at a time like Thanksgiving. Equally important is the People - the communicating, the remembering, the planning, the laughing, the helping, and sharing. |

when a thing is done, you move forward. Don't be upset or mad at yourself, just make the best decision you can the next time. "Lesson repeated until learned". A healthy lifestyle does not just appear fully formed from your initial decision. It is a work in progress, a lifetime journey with side trips. If you can, get up and walk around now - even if it's just inside the house because of the cold. Or do some hand weights or a few stretches. That would be a healthy decision and you could end the day on an up note! |

eggs are very good for you. The idea that they are not is a hold over from early nutrition studies of the 1970's. One of the best and very well referenced descriptions of the properties of whole eggs and their relation to health is here http://whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=foodspic e&dbid=92#healthbenefits enjoy your eggs! |

the "hover and learn" pop up is a great idea for both food items and recipes. It would remove some of the cumbersome elements from the search - ideally the hover pop up would indicate if the nutrition ranking had a problem because it was not entered correctly. Wasted a lot of time on searches that way. |

you may want to consider what you are eating as a possible cause. Do you have enough protein? Enough carbs? Do you have lots of filling fiber in the guise of fruits and veges? Are you eating whole grains and legumes? |
