| Weight Gain | protein problem :P | Aug 09 2009 02:31 (UTC) |

Hey blueberry Im a 5'6'' male and I weigh about 125-130 lbs. I usually work out 5 days a week and I work construction for 8 hours a day. My daily protien intake is usually around 150-180 grams. I do lift weights and etc. My advice is don't worry about massive protien intake. Just drink lots of water or other fluids to help your kidneys out. Cause high protein diets are bad on the kidneys. I usually drink over a gallon of water a day because of it. But then again Im no dr. so Im in no place to be giving nutrition advice. Good luck |

Hey Gi Jane and goodform thanks for the advice. Something else that crossed my mind is do u think that I am under eatting? I recently or still am recovering from an ed so my food outlook is a bit disordered. I usually supplement the calories for any exercise that I do but I basically went from being a bum to working construction and am still eating the same as when I was a bum. So I should add calories do to occupation and exercise or what? Thanks for the help. |

I kind of find this question one sided. Just cause we are men doesn't mean we don't worry about our weight. I have suffered from an eating disorder for a couple years now and I constantly worry about my weight and what I eat. I use this site and count every calorie just to make sure I am getting the right amount of nutrients and calories every day. I understand that you probably did not mean for this post to be one sided but I am just tired of hearing people talk about how only women have eating disorders and most men don't so no one really considers it. |

If you are wanting to add a protein shake into your diet and still loose weight. Opt of a Whey Isolate protien. Whey isolate has the most amout of protein for the least amount of calories, fat, and cholesterol. Whey Complexes are good too but the isolate is the best. |

| Weight Gain | Starting to lose the motivation to gain. | Apr 20 2009 02:17 (UTC) |

Hey osainto you are definitely not alone on this one. I too have lost almost all motivation to continue to gain this weekend. I just had a weekend of turkey hunting camp hell. I though that I was doing good bye gaining a little bit of weight, and thought I was looking healthier but apparently its not good enough for certain members of my family. To make a long story short I ended up getting razzed by my older brother all weekend. Getting called names like skeletor, or scarecrow, or whatever little childish name he could think of. But enough of my rant. The thing is that we should stay motivated not for anyone else but for ourselves. We need to strive to get healthier. My best advice is find the one person in your life that is fully confident in your recovery and talk to them. I just sat down and had a heart to heart talk with my Dad over dinner, and now I feel a little better about my situation. Other than that just keep on remembering how much you want to be healthier and stronger. Keep your head up and drive on. |

| Health & Support | EDNOS, Anorexia, Depression or Just a fast metabolism? | Apr 17 2009 00:18 (UTC) |

Let me first start off by saying that you are not alone. There are plenty of males out there with some sort of eating disorder. I only say this because it was hard for me to seek help when I realized that I had a problem... Anyways, I too am battling this beast of anorexia. I am 21 years old, 5'5 and currently weigh 125lbs, at my worst I weighed 105lbs. I too had a breif scare which started my recovery. But to your question. I am no medical professional so this is just strictly advice from a regular joe point of view. GIVE YOUR WEIGHT GAIN TIME. Mine seemed to take for every too, then in one week I went up 14lbs. Make sure you are getting enough good fats and protein in your diet. Try nuts like almonds pistachios etc. Also peanut butter is your friend. I eat a ton of it all the time. I love the stuff. As for the chocolate, I don't really like the taste of plain chocolate, I know I'm some kind of freak, but I sometimes mix it into a protein shake or on a PB sandwich. That is another thing, I found it hard to increase my calories and not feel bloated all the time so I started buying whey protein mix and mixing it with milk. This is just some suggestions of what I ate to gain, but in all give it time and DO NOT GIVE UP. Strive to be healthy again. Good luck and if you need anything just message me. The best thing we can could is help each other out. Recovery can be a long road and I know I still have far to travel. |

Like osainto said, you are not alone. It is hard being a guy and admitting that you have an eating disorder, and it is even harder getting through it. But CC and all of us are here to help you out. I discovered this site in late January and it has helped me gain significantly. If you need advice, a quick meal plan or any sort of motivation, this site can really help. I'm also here if you need some advice or motivation too. I am no professional, but I'll do what I can. |

osainto Like you bro. I too have a low blood pressure and resting heart rate (34), and take it from me it is a serious thing and is due to being underweight. Just yesterday I was getting packed to go due some camping when all of a sudden my chest started hurting and I got really light headed. I got rushed to the hospital where they immediately hooked me up to an EKG and everything for monitoring. Once the cardiologist came in my nausea had gone away but my chest still hurt. They then did a stress test on my heart which in tailed me running on a tread mill to my target heart rate then taking a ultra sound of my heart. Luckily there is nothing wrong with my heart and it is functioning normally. The cardiologist said because I ate healthy my heart was healthy, but because I restricted calories my heart was having trouble getting energy to function right. I all my best advice is to go get a stress test done on your heart, and to continue to eat healthy and EAT MORE. ED is a b*tch and we have to get through it. I am in the same boat you are bro, and I'm here for any support you need. |

I sometimes do the same thing. I used to stock up my calories big time before I started my recovery from anorexia. When I did I found that I was tired and sluggish through the day and full of energy at night. Once I started planning my meals better and eating a balanced diet, I seemed to have tons of energy throughout the day. My advice is to try and plan your meals and snacks out so you are not overloading yourself at night. It works for me and now I have loads of energy and feel great all day. |

DO NOT RESTRICT YOUR CALORIES!!! That is a bad idea. I used to do that every weekend and it wound up hurting me in the end. I developed a very nasty eating disorder and it has been very hard tying to recover. Instead just eat normal, do not think about food, and enjoy youself. Life is too short to be constantly worried about what you eat. Just have fun, and get drunk. Also try mixing the booze with diet soda. You'll save calories and be able to drink a few more drinks. |

Thank you so much. You are 100% correct. I think the reason why I eat oatmeal everyday is because I roughly know the amount of calories going into it. Even though I usually just scoop the amount out that I think Ill eat and then add things to it with no particular method of measure, I still have a rough guess on the calories. Oatmeal is my safe food. But it is soooo good. I think Ill go to the deli on campus and order a cornbeef sandwhich. While extra thousand island dressing. Thanks for the advice chrissy. |

Thanks for input. It just seems like I still have a hard time reaching my calorie range. I am on the road to recovery from anorexia and I still have the little voice in my head that tries to tell what to eat and what not to. Last night though I took Chrissy's advice and shut that voice up with a nice big bowl of orange sherbet. MY FAVORITE. I really like ensure or those instant breakfast shakes so I might try to work another protein shake into the end of my day. Also thanks for the advice about planning my meals gi-jane. I never really thought about planning my meals in advance. I usually just go with the flow of the day. |

Thanks for replying chrissy. It's not really a recurring thing, but the past few days I have had a drink along with drinking my nightly protein shake. The thing that worries me is if drinking could hinder my recovery from the beast of an ED that I have created. I never really though about ice cream!!! I think I might go out and get some. |

| Health & Support | Help, I want to gain weight but mentally can't!?! | Mar 12 2009 04:54 (UTC) |

osainto, Hey bro. I know exactly what u r talking about. I too have a serious problem with counting calories and worrying about what I eat. And I too am as straight as they come, and agree that it is embarrassing and "only a women's problem". But the fact is it isn't. Im not a professional by any means but I do believe that more guys go through an eatting disorder than want to admit it. So really, don't be embrassed. It is good that men like me and you realize we have a problem and are trying to correct it. As for advice on upping calories, well I'll admit it is hard. I just recently started to do so myself. On thing that has helped me in increasing what I ate is the use of protein powders. I try to consume at least one or more serving a day. This adds extra calories and protein. Another ideal that I have tried to put in my head is the "eat or DIE" philosophy. It may sound harsh but it has kept me going. I hope this helps a little. Just take it day by day or week by week and soon you'll start to get comfortable with eating more. Also try to seek professional advice. I may sound weak but there is nothing weak about getting fixed. |

I like to make a big glass of hot coco with my chocolate or cookies and creme protein powder. But watch heating it too much, the protein in it seem to stick together and makes it kind of chunky. |

| Health & Support | Help! Confused about what to do | Feb 28 2009 04:44 (UTC) |

Hey kookymonster1, your story and mine are one in the same. Almost the same time line too. It was just around Christmas for me too whenever I realized what I was doing and how I was restricting was hurting my body. I completely understand the whole fearing sugar free gum thing. I too am awaiting the doctors to get an opening for me to get help. It is so frustrating right. The good thing is that we have realized that we have a problem and have begun to increase our calories as much as our mentality will allow. As for the part about binging on some days and severely restricting on others, you are not alone. I often find my self doing the same. The thing is we need to stop. I'm no expert by any means but the binge, restrict cycle cannot be healthy. Just keep in mind that you need to eat to survive but not over do it. Try to keep your calories at rate for the week, taking in the same amount of calories every day. Then increase the amount of calories the next week. That is what seems to be helping me through eating more. Also do not get discouraged that you are not seeing the results right away. This is a long process and will take some time. Don't punishes your self for binging by restricting. If you slip up and overdo it don't worry mistakes happen. We fall down so we can learn to pick ourselves up again. Hope this helps. Also: I too am new to cc and I what I did was left my goal as maintain but modified my daily calorie goal. P.S. Cereal RULES. I too eat a lot of it. |

Thanks for the advice so fast vschuster. I agree what I am doing to my self is very dangerous. I know it hurts not only my self physically but it also hurts my family. That is the messed up thing. I can see hear myself saying that I won't eat a certain food and then at the same time I think to myself shut up that sounds really good to eat. For example: tonight I eat dinner at my Dad's house and he made chili. I could of almost killed him at first! I literally freaked out for no reason. He then informed me that it was a lean turkey chili but that didn't seem to matter to me. Finnally though, I calmed down and ate a big bowl of it. Needless to say he was happy. |
