Hey darkbeam. Your habits do somewhat seem a bit disordered. I think the reason chrissy said that your food choices point to ED tendencies because they're almost always the same. Trust me, I know what it's like to adhere to only a handful of "safe foods". But really, there's soooo much more out there to enjoy!

Now I'm not trying to freak you out.. but if you do increase your calories after a period of undereating, you will gain weight intitially. However if you stick to that number of calories, you're metabolism will speed up, and you'll maintain on that amount. Being a teen male, this should happen quicker compared to most other people. I know what it's like to be uneasy about increasing calories. I was totally there. In the beginning of my ED recovery, I gained weight after increasing the calories, but I also shot up an inch in height, and had much higher energy levels. If you have any other questions about this, feel free to message me.

Thanks for the reply goobyb! You have great advice too! (: I think what I am going to do is what Chrissy suggested and stop counting for a while and realize I can maintain my weight without counting.(See my other post for other info :o ) But thanks for being so nice and yes I might message you! (:

darkbeam: with you being so young and finding it hard to eat the appropriate amount for your activity level and stats, i think it might be good for you to ease up and NOT KNOW the exact amount of calories. it's not going to kill you. "normal" people don't turn into blimps from not knowing their caloric intake, "normal" people don't even count. so my point is that, if you want something eat it in moderation and don't worry about 100% accuracy.

Thanks for the advice Chrissy, I appreciate it a lot! I really should ease up, but its really hard for me to for some reason. I mean I measure EVERYTHING and it annoys the hell out of me but if I don't do it that will annoy me to cause I don't know how many calories I am consuming. Its crazy, is this some type of ED or something? I have no idea.

Anyways, there are some things like my moms apple cake that no one else makes and I don't have a clue how I should estimate on that. But I guess your right with the "normal" people thing. I really shouldn't be counting calories and just try to focus on a healthy balanced diet. I just can't do that for some reason I don't know. Got any other advice for me Chrissy?

I assume you use a food scale, yes? Well, if you do then put it somewhere that you can't use it. like in your parent's car or something so that when they leave for work you can't use it. how about eating what EVERYONE eats, and let someone else plate your food? what about eating bread from the bakery, pasta salad and sandwiches from the deli, and other unknown calorie foods? it might help you to let go of the NEED to count everything when you see that you will be okay without it. you're eating far less than you should be and your obsession with calories, weight, and your food choices is a sign of disordered eating even if you don't have a full blown eating disorder. what are your stats?

No, no food scale but I use the measuring cup 345434543 times a day....Also good suggestions. I never let people put food on my plate cause I always have to measure it out first...So yeah that would work.

Also to be honost I am not sure what my stats exactly are. All I know for sure is that I am about 5'4-5'6 tops 16 and a male. Not sure on my current weight but I know I am not overweight or under it for that matter. I know the bmi caculator for teens just I don't have a clue to put in for the weight. I am eating 1800 calories right now to maintain my current weight even though I know that is the minimun to eat for a male sedentary teen. I don't know, its like I am scared I am going to gain weight if I eat more then that. I don't know.

By the way, what did you mean by my food choices is a sign or disorder eating? Just wondering.

i feel like you do know what your weight is and you just don't want to share it, which is completely okay. When I said you seem to have disordered eating tendencies I mean that you eat much the same thing, much the same calories (despite wanting to increase), whenever you eat a bit more you kind of freak out. I just feel like you really need to take a break from all of this.

Atcually no, I am really am serious aha. I really don't know my weight, but to estimate I would say around 120-130? I really have no idea.

So your telling me I should stop counting calories and simply focus on a balanced diet? I am just worried if I stop counting I will gain a whole bunch of weight, see I used to be overweight then lost it all. Obviously from the way I am eating now you can tell I really didn't do it in a healthy way and I do regret that. Boosting up my calories to 1800 was a big thing for me, I did gain a little weight but now I am maintaining just fine. I would really like to eat like a "Normal" person but I am just worried thats all.

Just weight them

For example, the brownie weighs XX grams. Search the calorie content of the brownie and enter XX grams. It's not 100% accurate, but it's the best guess.

No food scale o;

Foods Calories in eggs-are they worth it? Nov 14 2009

I don't see if anyone suggested this or not, but have you tried Egg Beaters?  They're actually quite good and only 30 cals a serving...  I love regular eggs too, but only with the yolk mixed in.  Egg whites make me gag so this was a good compromise.

Whoops! Didn't see someone already posted this! Embarassed Ahaha

I read the label and saw each egg has 70 cal's in it. I actually scrambled 5 eggs with the intent to make two meals out of them and after they were done, I realized that I could have eaten all of them in one sitting, plus with no bacon, bread, and cheese would have been 350 cals. Does anyone think eggs aren't worth the cal's?

Well if your going for scrambled eggs why not give egg beaters a try? They taste NO different for regular eggs and they are 30 calories per 1/4 cup. (1/4 cup = 1 egg) The only bad thing is that is can get exspensive buying them all the time. Hope this helps.

Lol! No I cook the oatbran seperate w/ the banana chopped up in it. Then I put the tbspn of peanut butter in the bottom of the bowl, then pour the oat bran over it. I love getting to the bottom to eat all the nut butter.. hehe.

Pasta almost doubles in weight when you cook it (75g dry becomes 150g cooked) so I'm guessing that it doubles in volume too (3/4 cup becomes 1 and 1/2 cups).

Wow you sure? Double? That dosent reall sound right because it says on calorie count that 1 cup cooked pasta is about 210-230(Depending on the type.) So if 3/4 cup dry equals 210 calories that can't be right.........can it?

First I would like to say Hi and welcome to the forums! (:

According to the teens bmi graph, (http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html) you are actually at a healthy weight! On a low activity level you should be eating about 2010 calories every day to maintain your current weight. If you are more active you should be eating even more. Check the calculator and put in your stats there to see more. Maybe you feel you might want to gain a couple pounds? Thats fine too and you will still be at a healthy weight. Visit the weight gainers subforum for more information.

As for ruining chances for having kids that is simply crazy talk! (: Some people are just late bloomers, as some would say, and don't get there period till they are older. Some people can get it when they are really young as well. Don't worry, you will get yours eventually too. Most likely really soon!

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate and once again welcome to the Calorie Count forums. (:

Foods Oatmeal, calories when dry or cooked? Nov 07 2009

I've always been confused when counting calories for oatmeal.  Are the calories listed for oatmeal when it's cooked, or when it's dry?  I eat a cup of cooked oatmeal in the morning, and I'm not sure if I should list it as 1 or 2 servings, as a 1/2 cup of oatmeal will make a full cup when cooked.

It should atcually say in the nutrion facts on the oats package. But yes 1/2 cup DRY oats is 150 calories. Just make sure to add in the milk in your calories if you add any (:
