| Weight Loss | Can I please eat a snickers bar?? | Oct 01 2009 04:25 (UTC) |

I suggest eating the snickers bar, plus something else, like a full healthy meal. 1200 calories is only enough for your organs to function. Eat more, for the sake of your health. |

afluffyadorablebunny: I felt I would add my two cents here; I lose weight at a steady pace eating 1800-2000 calories. |

Invest in a good, non-stick pan and you won't need to worry about any oil; I personally use an electric griddle - the thing has been invaluable. Eggs have become a staple of my diet; I just rip up about half a cup of spinach into two eggs, beat it with a fork, fry it, fold it up, add pepper and tobasco and it's perfect (and fill it with whatever you like; tomatoes, peppers, or cottage cheese are popular in my house). I always say omelettes are the way to go.

Rufus_k: After you said that, I looked over my food log, at the long list of whole grain breads/fruit/spinach salads and then smacked myself in the forehead. It turns out I've been neglecting my fat intake. Thank you. |

I wasn't at a terribly healthy weight not so long ago; I'm down to the last few pounds that I want to lose (at this point, admittedly, vanity pounds) and would like to be able to keep up my routine. Generally, 1,900 calories is enough for me each day, so encountering a period of time where it suddenly isn't (and I don't believe I'm that active, compared to how much exercise I was doing a few months ago) is a bit confusing.

This forum is fantastic for advice and encouragement; keep focused and you'll do great! Also, walking your dog is a good way to exercise - gradually increase it to half an hour a day, then an hour a day, and you'll see a difference just from that. It doesn't matter what exercise you do to lose weight, as long as you're moving - and it helps if you enjoy the exercise you choose. You may not be interested in it right now, but perhaps in the future you could look into joining an exercise class of some sort? I've been taking karate for six years, and while the classes can be really rough, I've watched heavier people gradually slim down from doing an hour-and-a-half three times a week, plus it's fun! Tai chi is great for starting out, it goes slowly but works all the muscles. And if a martial art doesn't appeal to you there are so many other options - spinning classes, yoga, dancing, even getting a few exercise videos (turbo jam is great, and p90x is fantastic for the masochist in us) would be a good way to get yourself motivated. I also suggest weight lifting to everyone; it burns calories and helps you gain muscle (if you're eating enough calories of course) - the downside is that for the first little while during muscle gain, you'll look a bit bulkier, but then the muscle burns calories at a more rapid rate and you'll lose inches. Just invest in a couple of heavy weights. :) And I know I'm going on and on, but to keep yourself encouraged, get a measuring tape so you can measure your losses, since the loss of inches doesn't always show on the scale. More importantly try and enjoy the process; some people treat weight loss as a form of torment and it shouldn't be - be kind to yourself, lose gradually, eat well, move around, and you'll see a change. |

You need to eat more! It might sound like it goes against your goals, but 1300 calories, especially while exercising 5 days a week, is no where near enough - your body thinks it's starving and is hanging on to every calorie that you take in. It would be perfectly healthy for you to eat around 1800 calories a day. Also, don't be discouraged; I always say that at around 3 months is when you'll start seeing a change - begin to measure yourself and focus less on the numbers on the scale. At the beginning of a new exercise routine, people tend to lose body fat and gain muscle for a short period of time (roughly the first month), so their body reduces in inches, but they see no change on the scale. |

| Weight Loss | Addicted to 80 calories Mocha :(:( !!! HELP | Aug 09 2009 15:30 (UTC) |
12 |
I'm surprised no one has made this comment yet. 1200 calories isn't enough; you need to eat more - 1200 is the bare minimum to keep your organs functioning. And I wouldn't worry about an 80 calorie drink; factor it into your daily calories (which again, need to be higher) and it won't be a problem. Also, whether it's 25 calories from fat or all 80 calories from fat, it doesn't matter - 'fat' in your food doesn't make you gain weight, it's excessive eating/being sedentary that causes weight gain. Please research further to find out what the appropriate calorie amount is for you, because your current range could work against what you're aiming for, and could make you ill. |

Original Post by jahmela: You could definitely do without the margarine, maybe just add a little more of the pumpkin (since, if you buy a big can, you'll have extra anyways) as for the milk, I think it would be needed for the recipe; only 25 calories are from fat. If you're alright with less sweetness, you could probably half the brown sugar without any problem. |

I edited it; I set the oven to 350 and baked them for half an hour; if you want to make it into a bread rather than muffins, increase the time a little. :) |

Eat more! 1300 isn't enough, you should be eating 1500 at the very least, more if you're working out six days a week. |

Original Post by melisskah: Don't worry. You won't gain any muscle on 700 calories a day. Ever. You can't gain muscle on a deficit, and especially not on a starvation diet. What you may gain, however, are some new illnesses. Up your intake; at the very minimum you should be eating 1200/day (though I would suggest the base is 1500), your body thinks it's starving so now it's going to hold onto all of your calories. |

| Weight Loss | Does lemon juice really help kick up your metabolism? | Jul 05 2009 23:05 (UTC) |

Lemon is a diuretic; if you drink it, you'll widdle lots and thus your water weight will go down - that may be why people believe it boosts the metabolism. |

Clodhoppers; salty, crunchy, chocolate-covered graham. And sour patch kids; when I was a kid I ate those until I got canker sores. :O I haven't had either for a long time. |

| Weight Loss | Is there a difference in effectiveness between "intake vs exercise" deficit? | Jul 04 2009 18:38 (UTC) |
4 |
The difference, I think, will be in your end result. Both will make you lose weight, but assuming you're doing only one or the other, if you only focus on exercise, I think you'd definition/have a more lean physique after the weight loss than you would if you focused only on diet. But as lynnmm said, diet + exercise is the best route. |

| Foods | foods that are natural laxatives | Jul 04 2009 15:24 (UTC) |

Dates, olives/olive oil, cherries, parsley, walnuts, and rhubarb are all natural laxatives. I personally find just making sure I have fat in my diet (I'm terrible for not eating enough of it), having enough bulky food (lots of veggies) and drinking plenty of water keep the system running. Exercise is also great for it. :) |

I'm 5'7 and 21 years old. SW: 155 CW: 142 GW: 135 It's taken me since February to lose the weight; it comes off me very gradually and I've been making my very best efforts to make sure i'm losing body fat instead of muscle. I'm into clean eating; my diet is mostly fruit, vegetables, and lean meats; I don't eat white flours and have sensitivities to dairy, beef, and pork. I've lost a lot of my weight through a mix of weight lifting/yoga/weapons fighting/sparring; it's the best thing I've done for myself. :) |

I don't have much to lose at this point, but I thought I'd drop in and wish you the best; you're doing the best possible thing you could do for yourself. Sometimes it will be frustrating, but it will always be rewarding when you get to watch the numbers on the scale and measuring tape go down. If you ever want someone to chat with, I'm always up for it. :) |

| Weight Loss | I want to lose 10 pounds. Any help??? | Jul 01 2009 12:15 (UTC) |

You're on the lower end of your BMI; you don't need to lose weight - put effort into gaining muscle via strength training, which means eating more calories. The weight on the scale may go up but your measurements will go down as you gain lean muscle and reduce body fat. |

Avoid (full fat) dairy products, greasy food, and high-sugar products for the sake of your digestion; stick to a diet of lean meats, veggies, fruit and whole grain. Don't fry any of your food - bake, broil, boil, roast, or barbecue it. :) |

| Weight Loss | I need some serious help | Jul 01 2009 11:15 (UTC) |

I second the protein statement; whenever I'm having massive cravings, just a need to eat even though I don't actually feel hungry, I go for protein. Chicken breast, sliced deli turkey, boiled eggs, beans, a handful of peanuts, and I always feel better about ten minutes afterwards. |
