Anyone else think that Brady made up the story about Phill asking him to keep Amy P. around, just to get Heba more on their (Brady and Vicky's) side?

What the heck are pasties?  You must be talking about the Catholics.

You aren't from the Range, then, I take it.

Pasties.

Nope.  I don't think the Range is very representative of most of Minnesota?  Except we all claim Bob Dylan.

Minnesota

We have cool accents (you are all jealous, admit it)

We are all blond and blue eyed (ok, mine are greenish, blueish)

Despite the fact that we are a bona-fide presidential BLUE state only to be rivaled by Massachusetts, we apparently have our fair share of crazy conservatives (Michele-Ican'tstoptouchingbush and Iamamccarthyist-Bachmann **rolls eyes**, and "He's an Arab" lady).

We have people who make some pretty good movies, don't ya know?

We like to go "Up North" or "To the Lake" on weekends

We are "nice", which is code for saying we are very passive aggressive

"All the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average"

Powell was thoughtful, intelligent, and well-spoken, as always.  He is one political figure that inspires trust (which is unusual to say the least).  The fact that he is being vilified for his statements is ridiculous - he is still the same man, with the same merits.

Coal power results in more radioactive waste being released into the environment than nuclear power.

Yup -

Also has higher extraction cost (mining), higher amounts of disposable waste (ash) and obviously higher greenhouse emissions (given that nuclear GHG emissions are negligible).

That is why I said, compared to coal, nuclear wins hands down.

It is a bit of a double edged sword.  As an alternative to coal - it is no contest - nuclear all the way.  However, from a risk management perspective it is horrid.  My vote is for geothermal, wind and solar. Cool

I think after the election, Palin should try a new career as a satirist.  At the very least SNL should be cutting her a check for writing the skits for them.

Kiss

Oh I jest - I am looking forward to the debate - as long as it doesn't go the direction of Ferraro and Bush Sr.

I wish I could ask a question of the candidates.  How about "How do you spell Potato?"

CNN just interviewed Biden.  It was great.  Wolf Blitzer  then said "Anderson, I would love to say we are now going to talk to Sarah Palin, but I don't think she'll be joining us."  Then Anderson Cooper said "Yeah, don't hold your breath on that one"  - too funny!

wayne - apparently you didn't read my post carefully.  I simply stated your post was not relevant to whether or not the bailout was a political strategy to postpone the VP debate.  I actually made a point that your post was relevant to the general political discussion.

I guess I should have known better than to be polite and try to reason with you.   I did read that write up about the different cognative thinking patterns between republicans and democrats that was floating in one of the political threads here.

#36 - Watching that makes me squirm.  I am a liberal, no question about it, but I don't like seeing her make such a fool of herself.  I think she would have served herself much better by saying something like - "you know I haven't had a lot of dealings with Russia, but I have done..."  This is where she messes up.  She is in a unique position to play the inexperience card.  If she would own it and say I can learn or this is what I do know or this is what I've learned as I moved from position to position, etc., she would really be something to worry about then.  In this segment Katie is practically begging her to come clean.  Katie can be a pretty hard nosed reporter, but she is being so open ended with Palin and Palin still doesn't get it right. It is painful to watch.

#22 - I too would like to give McCain the benefit of the doubt and think that he will debate given the recent "agreement" about the bailout in Washington.  Only time will tell  -  Will he honor his word or will he play politics to delay the VP debate?

#27 - perhaps you would like to start another thread?  Your comments are totally off topic (not irrelevant to a political discussion - just not relevant to this one, especially given that the first Pres. debate is on foreign policy)

I have a PhD in Environmental Science.  My bachelors was in Env. Engineering.  To teach at the community college level you need a Master's degree.  You might look for a 1 year masters degree program in Environmental Education.  This also qualifies you to teach at small private colleges - especially vocational colleges, which almost always have general education courses including environmental science.  Where I live, a community college gig is great - the pay is good, benefits are great and work schedule is very flexible.

I teach Environmental Science, which at the introductory level engages in a discussion of not only how the natural environment works, but also how our actions at a variety of levels impact the environment.  In my class, I stress tools that we can use personally, as well as on local, state, and regional scales to reduce our impact.  No science background for a course like this is required.  I get great feedback from my students, so you might want to look into a similar course!  I always learn something every quarter and I am the instructor!

good luck!

If I were to take a class, I would probably take a horticulture course.

#2:
At first I thought the McCain announcement to stop campaigning was simply to generate media attention and deflect attention from Palin's poor interviews.  Although, I still think this, it makes more sense it was all about postponing the VP debate from the outset.  I find it sad that Americans will fall for this political tactic and will talk about his leadership.  Crazy!

Here is my take on the positives and negatives.  I am a scientist interested in being able to do my job (i.e. get funding without having to spin my research as serving some homeland security purpose).  I also think that we need to stop the downward spiral of science and math education performance.  Major contributors to this country's success were scientific and technological innovation - this is certainly something that we need for the future (particularly with regards to energy independence), yet we have fewer and fewer resources from which to draw (e.g. trained people and research and technology funding).  It drives me crazy!

Obama positives:  environmental policies, energy policies, research funding, education reform, health care, understanding the needs of middle class Americans

Obama negatives: foreign policy experience (although a 180 degree change in US administration will go a long way towards helping our standing in the world), economy - will find it hard to reduce debt

McCain positives: reaching across the aisle, foreign policy

McCain negatives: VP (shudder), economy - will find it impossible to reduce debt, temper (too aggressive - I don't want to continue to be us against everyone else), environment, energy, research funding, out of touch with most Americans in many, many ways

I have an audiobook.com account as well - I love it.  The best I have listened to is the Golden Compass series.  It was done as a BBC production where different narrators read for the different characters.  Lovely!

I think for some books, listening makes it more enjoyable.  I also really liked listening to "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis, "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant, Harry Potter (the Jim Dale narration), and A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin.

I used to just get the books from the library, but they are only in cassette tape or CD versions, which was great 10 years ago, but with MP3 technology, I much prefer the audiobook.com option.

If you are considering an audiobook.com account - note that there are loads of coupon codes out there to get a free download.

The last one sounds heavenly (yogurt).  I made something similar to your cocoa shake last night, but I included a frozen banana, only 1 date, no bee pollen and more cocoa.  It was thick so I scooped it out of the blender into a bowl and ate it like ice cream.

Although I admit that I paid almost as much for the blender as I did for my new couch, I probably use the blender more (so far).

Here is the cashew sauce great on steamed kale:

1/2 c raw cashews
1 tbsp raw sesame seeds
1/2 to 3/4 c or so milk of choice (what can I say, I am bad about measuring)
1.5 tbsp or so of Braggs mixed seasonings (or any mixed spice)
pinch of salt (optional)

blend until smooth - you want it on the runny side.  toss with steamed kale (this will coat a lot of kale - 2 bunches).

You can use Kale, but Kale and other big greens like collard or chard have a distinctive flavor that is not masked by the banana/chocolate/berry combo.  I don't mind it, but you definitly taste the kale.
