Motivation Oh FUDGE!! Jul 16 2009

Wow, this guys sounds like a real piece of work! If you spend that much time with him you're going to have to stand up for yourself, or he'll keep bullying you and making you upset. Have you tried telling him that your eating habits are none of his business and that you don't want to hear any more of his commentary?

He's probably just trying to tease you to get attention or something, but a lot of guys don't realize how sensitive girls are about this kind of stuff - especially if they don't look overweight, and you don't. It's up to you to let him know where the boundaries are, though, or else you'll just start to resent him and feel victimized. So put him in his place, and hopefully you'll be able to maintain a more respectful work relationship afterwards!  =)  Good luck!

I'd like to join the club, but not for too long  =P

I plateaued in the 170's, so I'm hoping to zoom right through the 160's and into the 150's! I'm at 167.5lbs right now and started at 197lb, so that's almost a 30-pound loss so far. Yay! It would be nice to see everybody here in a 150's club sometime next month!

The Lounge Boyfriends, what do they really think? May 13 2009

He's a guy. He told you that he is attracted to you the way you are, so he thinks that you believed him. He thinks that you're doing this for yourself, so he's trying to support you in your efforts.

It's up to you to stand up for your own health, not for him to tell you what to do. Starving yourself as a way of getting his attention can only backfire because:

1. The more miserable you are because you're hungry, the less fun you'll be to hang out with.

2. If you want people to respect you, you have to respect yourself and believe that they can like you for more than just your body.

3. If you keep expecting him to read your mind and he fails (surprise, surprise), you'll start to resent him for not understanding you and he'll start to resent you because he won't understand why you're upset with him.

The best relationships are formed when both partners are strong and independent people who are able to communicate with one another. If you're insecure about your relationship with him, please stop punishing yourself and have an honest talk with him about why you feel this way and how you can work together to help you feel better. Just the process of opening yourself up and asking for his help with this could help you to build a much stronger foundation.

Foods How is sorbet healthier than ice cream? May 12 2009

I agree with you, white_sakura... I think that eating ice cream is better because it's more balanced. Eating sorbet feels like overloading my body with pure sugar. The fat in ice cream gives me a longer-lasting feeling of fullness and satisfaction.

dllujan - I usually do ride while listening to music, but I'm looking for more of a structured workout to really push me and improve my fitness level.

behanna - thanks for the tip! The "Do the Tour, Stay at Home" audio series seems to be better priced than th Spinervals workouts ($10/stage vs $35/spinerval workout). Good find!

Great, thanks for the tip! I'm not sure if I can justify paying that much for each workout, but I'll see if I can find some used copies somewhere around town.

Weight Loss So what exactly is "Very Active" -- and should I really be eating 2050 cals per day?! Apr 20 2009

Hello,

We have pretty similar stats - I'm also 27, 5'6.5", about 170.5 lbs, and a student  =P

I'm quite active and I find that if I average about 1800 or 1900 calories a day I can lose weight fairly steadily but I have to be careful not to go below that or my body freaks out after a couple of days and I end up over-eating.

Have you tried using a heart rate monitor to show you exactly how many calories you're burning during exercise? I got one recently and it really sets my mind at ease to know for sure that I am burning as much as I had previously estimated. If you're able to buy one or borrow one for a while, it might help you to see if there is a problem with your calculations or not.

I've heard that home-pregnancy tests aren't reliable right in the first week or two of pregnancy. Take care of yourself and keep on testing!

Fitness Looking for Help with Specific Shoulder Pain Apr 10 2009

Yeah, when the rotator cuff goes you can get inflammation of the tendons that run inside the shoulder and across the top of humerus. You'll probably have to take it easy and get rid of the inflammation (ice, ibuprofen) and then do a bunch of physio techniques to strengthen your rotator cuff muscles. Physiotherapists deal with this all the time, so try to make an apointment with one as soon as possible.

Don't try to push through the pain or self-treat because it can lead to scarring of the tendons inside the shoulder, which decreases the amount of space they have to move within and makes it easier for them to get inflamed again. You don't want this to become a chronic condition.

Hey Osainto,

Is this a for-credit course that will leave a ding on your transcript or GPA if you drop it now? If not, you can give yourself permission to drop the course... especially if you've still got a long way to go before it's finished.

I had to drop a math course this semester and at the time I really struggled over the decision because I didn't want to be a "quitter." I'm now incredibly glad that I did drop it, though. Life's just too short to to be in a stressful state all of the time - and besides, you'd probably learn more if you had more time to dedicate to the course.  =)

Weight Loss Diet Soda Addiction - An American Epidemic! Mar 04 2009

The body responds the same way to aspartame as it would to real sugar - by releasing insulin. Insulin causes cells to uptake glucose from the blood stream. If there isn't a lot of glucose in the bloodstream because no sugar has been ingested (just aspartame), then insulin causes blood glucose levels to drop significantly. Having low blood sugar causes a person to eat more in order to bring their blood sugar balance back up to normal; this is why diet soda can harm weight-loss efforts.
