To Go boxes are your best friend.  cut the calories in half on any meal (and have a tasty lunch for the next day)

Appetizers as the main course.

Drink plenty of water. 

Split a meal.

gooey stuff (dressings, sauces) on the side.

I use "orthotics" (SuperFeet) which helps keep my feet properly aligned  and that helps with "outside knee pain".  I wear a full knee brace as well but you might want to look into an IT band brace (they look like a wrist band for and wrap just below the knee giving support to the IT band that runs along the side of the leg).  Also try runnersworld.com for more advice than you'd need on these matters.
