| Fitness | Best workout for abs and thighs? | Jun 15 2009 06:41 (UTC) |

you'll probably get quite a few ppl say you can't spot reduce....but i would recommend medium intensity weights....as well - high intensity cardio..ie - running (awesome for the stomach) or swimming. also try some HITT workouts for fat burn. my thighs used to be a bit more bulky but i spot reduced with weight training and i increased my speed running....so i think it is possible but it's not so much about losing weight in a certain area it's more so about building muscle that burns fat. |

| Motivation | bingeing | Jun 09 2009 04:01 (UTC) |

i suffered from bulimia for years - have been over it for 6months. just this week i had a relapse......very closely related to binge eating....except that sometimes you don't see the effects of the binge on your body. when i used to binge i would get up to 2000 calories in 1 binge...and yet i was extremely emaciated.....it was the most painful experience i found that the most helpful thing for me was to keep a journal. i decided to start journaling again this week b/c usually my triggers are emotional. i ever feel the urge to eat i either pick up a pen OR take a shower and brush my teeth (showering calms my anxiety)..... for me i use it as a coping mechanism and it's different every time - it might be family problems/anxiety. somtimes it's hard to keep your binge foods out of the house (especially if you live with others). do you have any interests? sports? hobbies? reading? i find if you find something you are really interested in and you can make it a focus then food can no longer rule that part of your life. |

| Health & Support | i need help!!!! | Jun 08 2009 16:13 (UTC) |

thanks for the advice. i totally agree i need to make a doctors appointment...... my problem is whenever i try to "gain weight" i find the change in my diet is overwhelming. it would be nice if i could just transition into a new lifestyle where i weight 115 pounds (or whatever weight is healthy) and could just eating and exercise healthily. I find the transition extremely hard. the idea of eating excessively scares me. |

i haven't had one of those muffins in years. but yesturday at school i saw someone eat TWO of them so i decided to look it up. ya i guess you would expect them to set you back closer to 1000....but imagine if you put butter on one. gross. |

| Health & Support | Bone Density? | Jun 05 2009 14:56 (UTC) |

make your extra calories your snack.... so eat 100-200 calories pre weights ....a 3:1 ratio carbs to protein....try a piece of bread and a glass of skim milk then try a 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein after your workout....if you aren't trying ot lose weight i would say 200 or over calories would be safe..... pre/post eating nutrition is REALLY important. you need to be feeding your body so that it doesn't eat away at itself....it will help with your muscle repair try doing 3 sets of 8-12 reps (if you don't want to get "bulky muscles") of each set of weights...the last 2 reps should be extremely hard to finish... i started weight lifting b/c i'm a really slim runner and the high impact cardio can cause you to lose bone density. i would really recommend it. |

by the way the best advice i can give is don't over exert yourself focusing on distance...... i used to run everyday an hour or more....i didn't see the results with my endurance until i incorporated sprinting! do you run outside or on a treadmill? if you run on the treadmill i would recommend throughout your run increasing the speed by .1mph every half mile to mile.....if you run outside try getting a metronome to keep you pace and speed it up as you run using the same technique good luck!!! you totally can do it!!! it is mind over matter! if you want any other info cause i kind of just swept over it feel free to msg me! |

hey i'm running it this year!!!! i run an 8.05 minute mile for a full marathon....the last marathon i ran was just over 3hours and 20 minutes. here's motivation for you - i started running 2 years ago and could barely run for a MINUTE without stopping - when training i try to get around 7.40 minute mile for an hour of running. to increase endurance i sprint two times a week on days that i lift weights. 4 times a week i run --- twice a week i do 30-45 minutes at my max speed so i run about 8.2-8.5mph for this time and depending on if it's marathon season i do my long run once a week.....with my rest day the next day every few weeks for the last 2 years whenever id run on the treadmill id start my run at .1 faster......i built myself from 5.0mph up to 8.5mph!!! |

psyllium husks = GREAT IDEA!!!!.... try getting all bran buds - psyllium (44% of your daily fibre in a 1/3 cup and only 80 calories) personally i mix the all bran buds with fat free yogurt.....the probiotics and the fibre really help get things moving - i also mix quite a bit of frensh fruit and cinnamin if you are eating fruits and veggies try eating them in "mono meals". ie. it fruit by itself...and eat veggies by themselves - they'll digest faster .....is the food your eating processed? do you eat a lot of fruits and veggies? also try drinking more hot water...this helps me. i exercise A LOT....so i generally drink about 20 glasses of water a day....and try to make quite a bit of it hot water... |

| Health & Support | Food not getting digested? | Jun 02 2009 14:48 (UTC) |
|
hey the most likely answer would probably be that you aren't chewing well enough... agree with gi-jane.. certain foods high in celulose/fibre/or general fruits and vegetables aren't easily digested...especially if you don't chew well.... for me this was happening after going on antiobiotics....it turns out that the flora in my digestive tract needed time to replenish since the antibiotics really effected them - my doctor suggested taking time away from eating the "culprit foods"....i stopped eating peas/carrots/mangos/corn for about 3 months and ate a lot of yogurt - now it's a rare occurence...it can also be a condition referred to as food intolerance - you can find a lot of articles about this online...or it can be a sign of IBS or colitis. so it's more likely chewing - but if it's persistent see a doctor. |

i'm sure you are going to get a bunch of posts from ppl being like "you can't slim down one part of your body"....but my suggestion would be to start doing weights.... it seems counterintuitive - but i dropped from 112 - 105ish pounds by starting to do leg weights - ...if you don't have a gym membership you can buy a set of 12-20 pound weights i think they're like 10 dollars you can get them pretty inexpensive and they will work wonders....i use machine but start doing squats lunges etc..... also...maybe try increasing your endurance.....long distance running focuses on different core muscles. |

| Health & Support | Just a question on weight fluctuation | Jun 02 2009 03:34 (UTC) |
1 |
totally fluctuates - mostly water weight....usually when i wake up in the morning i'm 108-109.....after eating i'll be more.....after the gym i go down to about 105......(obviously dehydration).... i've been trying to weigh myself once a week....usually on a friday morning - i find that if i eat a lot over the weekend i gain a lot of water weight and it's discouraging come sunday or monday morning hahahah.... i've stayed between 107-110 for the last 6 months with my weekly weigh ins.. i would suggest to just continue to weigh yourself at the gym but try to make sure it's before you workout...b/c you obviously sweat a lot when you workout and it will give you a poor idea of how much you weigh |

| Health & Support | exercise intolerance? | May 30 2009 05:16 (UTC) |
|
totally recommend a walk run program! train in intervals and just push yourself harder every time. i started running 2 years ago - when i first started i would walk 4mph for 2 minutes and run for 1 minute at 5mph.... it took me about 6 months so start running 5.5mph for 1 hour..........and now it's 2 years later and i can run 8miles in 1 hour! don't get discouraged! give yourself goals! just like weight lose endurance etc doesn't happen overnight...and once you start to reach your goals it is so motivating! |

| Fitness | How much excersise is too much? | May 29 2009 04:44 (UTC) |
5 |
it really depends on a few factors: injuries, state of mind (exercise disorder), proper nutrition... injuries are a pretty big deal...i'm a marathon runner myself so i feel your pain! i'm pretty young and have already had my share of injuries - knee, pulled muscles etc....my best advice - the first sign of any injury or pain STOP and rest until your okay again. last year i had a knee injury and i probably could have rested it for 2 weeks and it would have been fine....instead i overexerted myself and had to wait 3 months before i could run again! as long as your workouts don't have any pain i wouldn't worry about overtraining. |

i agree with mrsmueller.... in highschool when i first got into running i would go for a run when i first woke up for 20-30 minutes and then i would go maybe later in the day.... now that i'm in university it's obviously a lot easier to find time to slot in the gym i remember my days were so busy with studying/extra curriculars etc after school i didn't really snack at all so 30 minutes of cardio and maybe some toning and free weights did it for me by the way...i wouldn't get to worried about it...as soon as exams are over you'll have all summer right? and you may think ppl are noticing when you gain a few pounds but chances are you are the only person who has. as you said you've been maintaining your weight over the whole year....i remember from the age of grade 10-12 my body put on about 10 pounds....but i probably would have looked unhealthy if this hadnt happened. |

k awesome thank you... my mom is an obgyn...(i asked her about it but obviously wouldn't go for a checkup with her)...i have an appointment with a doctor next week so hopefully he'll clear things up. she said that it is impossible to get your period if you are pregnant...most ppl confuse pregnancy bleeding with your period - so you may bleed during pregnancy but it's not from your menstraul cycle. but that is a good idea go to the dr. anyway.... sealion...thanks for your reply....i am a runner...my long runs are about 15 miles - but i've been running for about 2 years and have trained for 2 marathons - i've recently plateaud at my weight (2 yrs ago before i started running i was 140) .....did your doctor say you lost your period due to low body fat or b/c of the physical strain? i'm extremely worried about losing my period b/c i have heard horror stories about ppl overtraining and in the long run becoming infertile.....how much more did you start eating? did you put on weight? |

| Fitness | Working out in the morning vs. the evening? | May 25 2009 15:34 (UTC) |

i used to have sleep problems from marathon training at night - went to see my doctor he said it's b/c the body produces stress hormones when you workout (there are quite a few articles online about this). stress hormones don't decrease until 4-6 hours after you workout.....so that's why if you go to bed right after a high intensity workotu you can be wired.... i had to start running in the am |

| Weight Loss | Gluten Free? | May 25 2009 15:21 (UTC) |

totally agree with GI jane - take out the refined carbs. it's silly to just take gluten out. if you have celiac disease gluten wears down the villi of your small intenstine making you unable to absorb nutrients... you won't have any benefits from removing gluten unless you already have the disease. a lot of wheat/oat/barley products are extremely good for you and it's more annoying than anything to find a substitute. |
