Just saw the photos in your gallery. Wow, he's beautiful (and so is his sister)! My cats are orange tabbies (the faded kind like him) and tortoiseshells like his sister! What a coincidence <3

Poor baby. My kitty also plucks out her fur and chews her skin when she gets anxious (which is a lot of the time). It's heartbreaking. :(

Just like people, kitties sometimes have psychological issues. Unfortunately, you can't diagnose a cat with generalized anxiety disorder by sitting down and talking to him, and you can't give him medication for his problems.

What helps my cat is catnip. When she's obviously uncomfortable or hyper I will try and play with her and use up her energy, but when she's not responsive to playing, I give her some catnip to roll in and she calms right down.

It sounds like you are already doing quite a lot to keep him happy, and that's really observant and caring of you. He's lucky to have such a great family!!

Weight Loss Still losing weight, but stomach getting BIGGER! Sep 19 2009

You said you don't think you're losing muscle. Contrary to your assumption, losing muscle would actually make your tummy SMALLER, not bigger.

If you are GAINING muscle in that area (lots of sit ups or other exercise that targets the stomach), then this could definitely cause the extra three inches of girth.

Maybe you are suffering from anxiety or depression.  This can alter your eating habbits and sleep.  It is o.k. if you are, as lots of people do at one point in their life.  If you think this may be the cause maybe you can talk to a friend or counseller?

I definitely second this. Major life changes can cause different levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. This can be something obvious like depression or anxiety, or it can be more a more subtle reaction to stress in general. Especially if you're feeling lonely.

The symptoms you describe are often related to some of these (or other) mental health concerns. I'd talk to a doctor about it right away.

I dunno if it's healthy on a regular basis (because you're substituting less-nutritious food for the nutritious food), but I do it all the time anyway, and it works like a charm for losing weight when you know you can't resist over-eating at a nice dinner.

If you're doing it a few times a month or less, you're totally fine I'm sure. I tend to eat out about once per week and I do the same thing you do.

Weight Loss Does being fat make you tired? Sep 19 2009

No, actually being chubby left me with more energy usually. Since I lost some of my weight, I am always tired.

It sucks, I'll wake up at 1 in the afternoon, do a few minimal things (like check email or go to the store or go to class) and I'm already exhausted. I practically fall asleep in class or while I'm driving. I get home and either nap, or go into a coma in front of the tv for a couple of hours. Then I get hungry and have an energy boost (just enough energy to go make an easy dinner), but the minute I'm done eating, I have to go to sleep.

I sleep about 16-20 hours a day on average.  :(

I am almost positive it's due to my depression, so could that be your problem? You feel less motivated, more tired, even physically weak. Like your body just doesn't care? It's worth looking into if you can't find other causes...

Patience is a virtue, the ability to not judge somebody based on whether or not they have a "cute" face or any other physical attribute is a virtue.  Physical cuteness is merely an accident of birth, not a virture.  The sweetest, most loved person I have ever met in my 63 years was very overweight, had stringy (but clean) hair and a glass eye.  She was physically very unattractive.  She would also give you the shirt off her back, though she was very poor.  She always had a kind word for everyone.  She wasn't screwed; she was absolutely loved by everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, who knew her.  Being cute or adorable doesn't, as a rule, last forever; a kind heart does.  Please forgive me, if I sound "preachy," but I guess I was just put off a little by your "cute face" comment.  We all have a right to our own "ideals."

You should know, that I 100% agree with you. Without exception. I was trying to give the response that would be most comforting to the OP. In general, a cute face is something a person can't acquire through effort, but weight loss is. I do not judge others on their physical appearance (never ever have), but the rest of society obviously does. Since I personally am ashamed of my own face, I thought it would comfort her to hear that she's a lot prettier than she thinks compared to some of us (not that it SHOULD matter, but it obviously does to her).

My dislike for my own features stems from BDD (I'm working on those issues though), and not any sort of shallowness I have towards anyone else on this planet.

Since the OP was complaining about being judged negatively toward her appearance, I was trying to help by complimenting her appearance. Sorry if I seemed like I was contributing to the superficial cults that the rest of society embraces so excitedly.

And apologies to the OP if my compliments of her face only made things worse. I guess I put my foot in my mouth.

:(

EDIT: Oh, and when I used the term "my own ideals" I meant for myself (because of the self-esteem and BDD issues). I don't think SHE is somehow a better or worse person for her appearance. Again, I think that came out completely wrong. Sorry.

anglej, that one would suck, because then you'd also feel guilty for thinking they were so fat when they are actually the same size as you! So it's a double blow. Not only are you fat, but you are judgmental too?! (At least, that's how I feel when it happens to me)

I was responding to the OP. And I wasn't trolling for compliments! I was trying to tell her that having a cute face is a far better virtue than being skinny based on my own ideals. Because if you're kind of ugly, then no matter how much weight you lose, you are still screwed.

But she's adorable at any weight.

I think her friends are rude as hell (and I gave her advice about them). I fail to see why I'm suddenly the devil.

Yeah, for me it was seeing a really unflattering photo of me in the scrap book my family made for my grandfather's 80th birthday.

I was wearing bright pink and I looked like a round little pig. Each one of my boobs was bigger than my entire HEAD!!! And I'm only 5'1 so you can imagine how ridiculous and slutty that looked (even though I always dress modestly).

I looked like a caricature of myself, and I was mortified that I was permanently featured in an important family artifact in such an unflattering way. I started crying and almost ruined the super fancy $7,000 dollar dinner, and I had to get drunk for the first time in my life just to keep from from ruining my papa's birthday with an impulsive suicide attempt.

It was baaaaaad. I still cry when I think about it. *shudder*

Anyway, cut them out of your life pronto. Surrounding yourself with people like this will sabotage you emotionally, and you'll have a harder time breaking the cycle of "lose the weight, then gain it right back". I cut two very shallow people out of my life late last year, and suddenly I was motivated to lose ALL the weight I had been trying to lose for a couple years. Just like that. A very positive change for me.

Weight Loss DO you talk about your weight loss? Sep 09 2009

I hate talking about my weightloss!

I was always very thin, and I was only chubby for about a year or two due to a debilitating depression and a bunch of useless meds. Now that I've lost the weight, everyone acts shocked and goes on about my weight loss.

It makes me feel like I must have been much fatter for much longer than I really was. Otherwise, why would my weight loss be so noticeable and praise-worthy?

My cousin's brand new husband met me recently and everyone kept saying how thin I looked. So now he *thinks* I used to be the fat girl or something. Really, I was 20 pounds overweight for a VERY SMALL part of my life. But now I've got this shame as if I was obese for a decade or something.

I sabotage myself too. I want to warn you to look out for re-gaining the weight after your event. By tying your goals to a specific event (for me it was my birthday in July), you risk losing momentum after the event ends.

After my birthday passed, I wanted to take a break from dieting since the function that motivated me was over. But my logic of "a few weeks of maintenance calories" turned into "a few months of just-above maintenance calories". I ended up gaining three pounds.  :(

It doesn't sound like too much, but it's like 1/7th of my progress so far, and it could have been even worse.

So if you fail to meet your goal by your event, don't give up, okay? :(

Then I noticed TBHQ for freshness added....hmmmm....googled it...........BUTAIN (sp) LIGHTER FLUID!!!!!! but the FDA says the quanity is safe for human consumption.........very IRATE OLD WOMAN here!

Hi there, I have to take some serious issue with this comment. Not your fault, but as a chem major I do like to keep misinformation from spreading. I direct you to read this link:

http://scienceblogs.com/moleculeoftheday/2007 /03/tbhq_mixed_feelings.php

There may be many reasons to avoid those Cheez-its (and even TBHQ), but fear of ingesting actual butane is a reeeeeally ridiculous one. That reminds me of the old hilarious hysteria that margarine is only one molecule away from being plastic (it's not, but even if it were, one molecule change is a LOT). Only someone unfamiliar with chemistry would think actual butane was in the food. It pisses me off that people exaggerate like that to scare consumers like you, coastsc.

I really hope you enjoyed your Cheez-its. If you didn't get ill, then you're probably not allergic to TBHQ anyway. Like I said, Cheez-its have worse ingredients than TBHQ anyway.

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm craving some Cheez-its... :P

Wow, you're so lucky to be feeling positive effects from your diet!! So far I feel miles worse than when I eat more. Last time I tried my diet, I suffered the whole time as well.

Maybe I'm just not cut out for it. I hope one day I can go to bed feeling like I accomplished something (instead of feeling, hungry, exhausted, grumpy, and perpetually unsatisfied).

*sigh* Maybe I'll be more motivated hearing that you're happy with your results so far. :P

There's nothing left to lose. If you keep trying to lose more weight, it's going to be muscle and organ tissue, NOT FAT. Very unhealthy, which you say is the opposite of your goal.

If your goal is to be more "fit" as you say, then I would focus on gaining muscle (which will increase your weight, as it's more dense than fat). You'll gain a couple of pounds, but you'll be leaner. And in order to gain this muscle (which is really your only option at this point), you need to have excess calories. You can't build muscle on a deficit.

Weight Loss Diet soda gives you stomach fats ?? Sep 05 2009

I drink diet root beer and diet cream soda when I can afford it.  Had no effect on my weight loss in any way. Though I will say I get a major sweet tooth the following day. May or may not be related though.

Like others said, there are two reasons why diet soda drinkers are fatter:

- They assume they can eat more food in exchange for the calories they saved by drinking diet soda.

- People who are trying to lose weight (and thus who are usually over-weight by definition) tend to consume diet products more often than people who are very thin and not watching calories. This makes those studies fairly disingenuous to me because they neglect to account for this fact when they boldly proclaim there's a correlation between a diet product and overweight consumers (remember kids, correlation does NOT imply causation!)

I know just what you're going through. I'm also a compulsive binge-eater who recently fell back off the wagon.

After eating the recommended 1200 calories per day for many months and almost reaching my goal, I didn't feel any prettier. If I'm going to be ugly, I might as well be ugly and fat, right? So I fell back into my old binge habits.

But since my stomach was smaller, my binges would lead to hours of crying from the pain, nausea or actual vomiting (which was great because then I'd have some room to go eat more). It's not an exaggeration to say that eating is the only thing that makes me happy. :(

My favorite hobby is to go to a buffet and just eat a dozen heaping platefuls of food. I don't even care what the food is, I love allllll of it.

Since I just re-started my diet on 09/01/09, I figured we'll be in this boat together, kind of. Also, your pug is the cutest thing ever!

Cheese snob  ;D I can dig it.

You'd probably enjoy this really expensive block of Monterey Jack my aunt bought for me as a gift the other week. It was beyond decadent. I melted some of it over french bread (like an open-faced grilled cheese) and I wanted to cry it was so good.

Mmm....

If you want a reeeally low cal way to make it (not as nummy of course), you can use 45 calorie bread (toast it first so that it gets crunchy with no margarine or butter needed). Then use some low cal cheese mixed with a highly flavorful cheese (like fat free cheddar/american mixed with some pepperjack) and nuke the thing for 20 seconds.

It's not quite grilled cheese, but it's gooey and cheesy and warm and you can add tomato or avocado and make it really decadent. :)

It's a decently satisfying grilled cheese for about 150 calories.

People on this site give diet advice all the time without specific training.... including you.. what is your point?

To be fair, Sully isn't trying to profit from his advice the way she is. He gives it out as an amateur (along with all the caveats that accompany amateur advice). She is attempting to be a professional diet guru. Big difference, and it's reasonable to hold her to higher standards.

Aside from that, I don't know who she is, or what the book's about. I'll reserve judgment.

Motivation Diet Anxiety Dream!! Jul 08 2009

I have a recurring dream where I'm completely alone and I'm trapped forever in a warehouse full of yummy processed foods (hostess cakes, chips, breads, crackers, ice creams, pizzas). The whole dream is just me climbing the shelves and trying to stuff as much food into me as I can. For some reason there are always tons of Suzy Qs.

But then I wake up and it's such an awful reality-check.   :(

Those kinds of dreams make we wish for an apocalyptic disaster to wipe everyone out while I take up residence in a Costco or something and never worry about anyone seeing me spend my remaining 40 years being a total glutton.

Ive actually tried this, and im hear to say it actually works. My friend started doing this, along with regular work out routines and a stable diet, and she lost 45 pounds! it made her sweat 10 times more then work outs alone.

Correlation doesn't imply causation. If I start using a brush instead of a comb to get the tangles out of my hair, and over the next few months I lose 45 pounds, it doesn't mean other people should brush their hair to lose weight.

^ This.

Call me Captain Obvious, but I'm hazarding a guess that the regular work out routines and stable diet may have had a little something to do with your friend's magical 45 lb weight loss.
