| Fitness | Hypothetical question about running shoes... | Jul 31 2008 21:12 (UTC) |

Hypothetically, if you are a mild overpronator, you should do OK in a stability shoe - they are called stability shoes because they help your foot stay stable in transition. If you are logging many miles, I would still stay with a motion control shoe (were you fitted for that? What style shoe is it?) Maybe you might try a different style or brand? Otherwise, I would still go to a running store and get fitted for the stability shoe. Try to find a store that has more options. They should have at least 100 shoes on the wall (not all motion control of course). Good luck!

The best thing to do is to go to a running store and have the people there fit you for the proper shoe. they are trained in how to fit you for the right shoe based on how much they see you pronate (or not). If you don't run in the right shoe for you, you will get injured. You might not get the right shoe the first time, but when you find the shoe that works for you, you will know. Most stores will let you take the shoes for a run around the parking lot, or on a treadmill that they have in the store so that you get a good idea of how the shoe will handle when you run with them. Good luck! |

Dear lovingmylife Did you ever have the knee pain check out? You should, especially if it is still there, or comes back if you start running again. It might be something as simple as an overuse injury, or it could be something worse.... If you do get it checked out go to a sports doctor, or a doctor that runs. They will be more sympathetic to your desire to run. Also, have you ever tried interval running - you run for a set amount of time (1 min, 2 min - you decide) and then you walk for 1 minute. Jeff Galloway - an Olympian marathoner developed this method of running, and he suggests that it is a good way to run and stay injury free. Check out his website at www.jeffgalloway.com it has lots of information there for you. I have used his method to complete 4 marathons... and I was smiling at the end of each one!

Congratulations on your decision to complete a marathon! The way that I did it was to join a group that uses the Jeff Galloway method of using run/walk intervals - the interval is determined by your fitness level. If you can find a group in your area that would be the best, however, you can check out his website http://www.jeffgalloway.com/ for more information. It can even help you find out if there is a group in your area. If you have never completed a marathon, you will be in for a treat! Nothing like finishing your first! (this coming from a total non athlete!) Good luck!

| Fitness | Not sure what to do....was told I was getting Shin Splints | Jul 25 2008 14:27 (UTC) |

Hi.. sorry to hear that you are developing shin splints. One of the best rememdy's for this (according to our running coach) is to use your foot to write imaginary letters of the alpabet in the air. This will help stretch and strengthen those tendons in the front of your leg. About your knee, you might go to http://www.runnersworld.com/ and click on the injury prevention tab. The info there might help, but it almost sounds as if you might have alignment problems in your right leg (since your foot goes out to the side when you stride) in which case I would see an orothopedic doctor who is also a runner (they are less likely to tell you to stop running Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Plateaued..now gaining without any changes to diet/exercise?...any advice? | Jun 25 2008 23:58 (UTC) |

Have you looked at the types of food you are eating? I was having the same problem - gained 10 pounds since january, and I have been exersizing more and watching what I eat carefully. In the past I had tried the blood type diet - which tells you which kinds of foods are good for your body type. I decided to go back to that this week, and low and behold, I have lost almost 5 pounds since saturday! This is probably all some sort of water weight due to detoxing, but it might be worth a try for you. |

This is what I will do when I have left over cake from birthday parties - I will serve it to the rest of the family once for dessert and if it's not all gone I dump it. All of it. It will do you no good staying in your house. It will only haunt you day and night untill it is gone! Get rid of it! ... DO IT NOW! even if the rest of your family wants it, explain to them that no one REALLY needs those kinds of calories anyways! |
