Weight Loss What are they feeding their kids? Apr 10 2009

This kind of stuff really upsets me.

* As a parent, one is supposed to be responsible for the childs well-being. Giving that child unhealthy food can cause health problems, and emotional problems as well.

* You're also setting your child up for bad habits that are only going to get hard to break over the years.

I have a little sister and it drives me CRAZY when my parents re-enforce the eating habits she learned from them! My sister (11) is quite thin. Your average string-bean adolescent. She never eats breakfast, snacks on junk food all day, and then will have, MAYBE 3 bites of our dinner. Of course, since she's "the baby" and "mommy/daddies little angel" she gets to clear her plate.

Anyhow, perhaps since you work in a school program, you could have a day of health education? Spring is here, maybe you could let the kids go outside and run around.

I usually time it so that i leave half an hour after i eat. Any sooner, and i feel sick and have nearly thrown up (luckily i jog outside so it wouldnt have been a big deal). It doesnt bother me to go later than half an hour though. Perhaps you should eat filling things before hand. Like a good amount of whole grains and protein with a bit of healthy fat.

Maybe try a two slices of whole-grain toast with peanut butter and a hard boiled egg?

I really want to do it, but i dont think i could stand waiting a month to grow it out! I usually shave every day, and it all has to be gone! I'm pretty self conscious because i have very pale skin and VERY dark hair down there, so even a tiny bit of stubble is noticeable.

That's one thing i like about exercise; it's free! As a soon-to-be college student living on her own with her boyfriend, i need to save every penny i can. You dont need equipment or a gym membership to run a mile outside, or do some good old fashioned pushups and crunches. If i want weighs i'll use my backpack.

A couple of years ago i got mono really bad and dropped from 5"2 120lbs to 96lbs.

I had this (slightly chubby) woman come up to me in the grocery store. She stood there for a few minutes before saying "You're sooooooo skinny....." At that point i got a tad pissed of and said "You're soooooo fat." and walked off.

So much for taking the high road. I feel kinda bad about it now, but right then it felt soooooo good.

As far as arms go, one of those pull-up bars that goes in your doorway is good. I'm not a fan of exercise equipment at all, so i dont really know much about them (I.e what that pull-up bar is called). You could also get a punching bag! Awesome for working arms and pretty much everything else.

If i were you, i would consider a bare, too. It helps a lot with stretching, and if you want to take it a step further and learn some ballet, that would be great too! Ballet works your legs, core, helps with flexibility and can improve stamina.

Lol, my boyfriend probably has something like that. We both LOVE MMA and spare with eachother often. He even had a $2,500 scholarship for it, but broke his ankle a few weeks before school started :(

Thanks to everyone for your replies, i'll definitely be giving those a try today!

I know how you feel about yo-yo weight and messing up your metabolism. If you want to loose weight make sure you're eating less calories than you expend. Perhaps get your thyroid tested to make sure everything's ok with that squishy little gland.

Fitness What exercise or anything that i can do for my thighs not to be fat but NOT MUSCULAR? Mar 29 2009

The two above me have covered pretty much everything, but i have something else to add:

I, too, measure my thighs by where (or in my case, if) they touch. Normally mine dont touch at all, but i can still eyeball how much space there is between them. I've noticed that after an exercise that really works my legs, they are about an inch or so bigger than normal, so you might want to pay attention to WHEN you 'measure' your thighs.

I'm 5 2.5" and currently weigh 110 lbs. I live in america and i hate Hate HATE their sizing! So confusing! I just bought a pair of pants that were a size 5. Most of my american sized pants are a size 2. This is why i stick to European sizing. In European sizing i'm a 26 or a 27.

Health & Support Eating Disorder??? Mar 27 2009

Original Post by lalabanana:

It is an extreme stigma that anorexics have to be underweight. You can be overweight and anorexic or restricting. As for calorie intake there is no set intake either - if it is too little for your needs to a point it starves you it can be considered restrictive.

If you fear a loved one or you have an eating disorder, I suggest you either reach out to them or reach out for help. And not on a forum, either.

Actually, the DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa is:

1. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height (eg, weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected).
2. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
3. Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
4. In postmenarchal females, amenorrhea ie, the absence of at least three consecutive cycles. (A woman is considered to have amenorrhea if her periods occur only following hormone, eg, estrogen administration.)

So, technically, anorexics do have to be under a healthy weight. I think you're thinking ED-NOS. ED-NOS means that pretty much all but one or two of the DSM criteria are met. Therefore a person who is a at a healthy weight, but has an intense fear of gaining weight and disordered thinking would not have anorexia but ED-NOS, which is by no means any less serious. Weather you weigh 72 lbs or 300 lbs, if you're having these disordered thoughts you need to seek help.

Just some thoughts on the 'weight gain on the pill' issue.

When do a lot of people go on the pill? When they get into a relationship. What happens when you're in a new relationship? A lot of times, eating out, staying in and watching movies, drinking, spending time at the movies instead of jogging, ect. Thus, one gains weight. Which might cause someone to think "Since ive gone on B/C, i've gained weight! The pill did it!"

Just sayin.

Maybe, but I've heard (please don't quote me) that it takes hours for that to happen - but that's not necessary to lose fat.

Yeah, that would make sense. And i'm talking long-distance as in a half marathon.

wait, wait, wait. I'm confused here. If you're running long distance and your muscles have used up all their sugars and go-to energy stores, wouldnt they HAVE to turn to metabolizing fat for fuel?

I'm on YAZ, and it didnt make me gain a pound. The only form of B/C that REALLY makes you gain a significant amount of weight is the depo shot. My mother gained 20 lbs on it, and so did my friend.

As far as YAZ goes, i like it quite a lot. The only thing that bugs me is that if i miss a pill i feel sick all day. And when i first went on it it made me very sick for a day or two. Other than that, it's great!

Fitness Can anyone help me with some exercise advice? Mar 27 2009

I would start adding 15 min to half an hour of weights before your cardio. The way i understand it, the weights will use up all the 'quick energy' in you muscles (the sugars stored in your body) and then the calorie torching cardio will burn more fat. Although there is no way to 'spot lose' fat on your body, the weights CAN help tone where you want to tone, say, your arms.

If i were you i would do that ^ 4 days a weeks, and then add a spinning class, or a day swimming. But that's just me, because would probably get bored doing the same workout for 5 days a week :P

Have you spoken to your school and work, Mudcake? Explained your situation? School particularly should provide some sort of specialist support.

And when you do take whatever you are prescribed, again, if you experience side-effects (including reduced appetite) speak to your doc. Brinleighusc is right, though - if you do lose your appetite, mechanical eating (eating to a plan) is wise.

I dont think it would do me much good to talk to the school, seeing as i graduate in 6 weeks. Setting up a program would be a bit of a waste. My goal with this is to START college strong, and not have to fight to bring my grades up like i have k-12.

I dont think i'll have much difficulty with weight, seeing as i already pretty much eat on a schedule. But i'll definitely keep track. I dont really want to loose any major weight, i just want to tone up and shape up my eating habits.

Thanks for your input guys :)

I too, have heard of the 'study pill' use for it. But, because of my inability to focus, i've struggled throughout my entire school year and have almost gotten axed on the job multiple times. I need to do something. This fall i enter college and i NEED to get at least a 3.0 to keep my scholarship (which i got for my ACT scores. Ironically i was failing 3 classes at the time).

Weight Loss Does dieting make you miserable? Mar 26 2009

You probably break your diets a lot, dont you? That's because from the sound of it, you're being WAY too restrictive. Those diets will make you loose weight for the first few weeks, but you'll gain it all back. The only way to loose weight and keep it off is to make a life change. Eat healthy foods (not low cal low carb low EVERYTHING foods) and allow yourself to indulge once in while. Pair that wit exercise and you're good to go!

I love love LOVE carnation instant breakfast after a workout (or before, for that matter) Since you're trying to gain, i'd add two packets to one glass of milk. Thats......*calculating*......340 calories if you use skim milk. About 380 if you use two percent. I also love muscle milk. In some supermarkets it comes pre-mixed in a bottle, or you can buy a tub of powder at GNC.

If you cook, eggs are very high quality protein. Try this omelette recipe:

*3 eggs

*leftover chicken

*cheese

*salsa

Heat up a skillet and lightly coat the bottom with olive oil. In a container, mix the three eggs until frothy. Whilst mixing, pour about two TBS of COLD water in (this will help make it fluffy). Dump eggs into skillet.

Sprinkle the leftover chicken (chopped up) onto the egg when the eggs have set a little, and top with cheese, salt, and pepper. When the omelette is done to your liking (I like mine just a tad runny) Scoop it out with a spatula and fold it onto a plate. Top with the salsa.

Weight Loss I GAINED weight?! Mar 25 2009

Thanks for your advice :) Since i've made this thread i've bumped up my calorie intake so that, if nothing else, i'm always over 1,000. I kind of find it hard to get enough calories, but i've discovered that peanut butter on whole-wheat bread is a delicious way to boost my intake. AND i've seen 2 lbs drop off! :) Though since it's only been two days it's probably just water weight.

Did a couple of members who replied to that sticky SAY they bulked up a bit? And by bulk up i dont mean 'Mr. Universe' bulky. I'm talking 'not a delicate woman' bulky. If that even makes sense.
