| Weight Loss | When you first started trying to lose weight, what did you do? | Jan 31 2007 12:37 (UTC) |

| i started exercising again... and lost 13 pounds. i stopped losing though, got frustrated, and thankfully, happened across an article in runner's world magazine that suggested this website for runner's wanting to lose weight! so i checked it out, created my profile, and started logging calories, limiting intake to what the tools suggested... i started losing weight again, and decided to venture into the forums where i learned everything i didn't already know about getting healthy! and, today, i am healthy!!
what's your story hk?! |

| Fitness | Exercising when sick? | Jan 22 2007 19:39 (UTC) |

| i recently had a doctor explain to me that when you exercise your immune system is at its most vulnerable... so, if you are at the gym and a bit sick, you are probably more susceptable to all the other little germs that are floating around the gym. something to think about, i suppose...
i run with a cold, but headaches and fever keep me off my feet... i think you have to listen to your own body and do what it will allow! |

| just be careful, every calorie counts! if you are losing, i wouldn't worry about it, but when you hit that first plateau, you may want to take count to see if you are eating too many (or too few)... good luck! | |||

| swimming is a great cardio work-out! and, cardio burns the fat... but, as michelle54 said, you still have to eat well! | |||

| Maintaining | How Do You Maintain? | Jan 12 2007 15:15 (UTC) |
17 |
| honestly, i don't think there are any tricks or secrets! by the time most of us hit maintenance we absolutely KNOW what a proper portion size looks like, and what is enough for our body to sustain itself.
i don't count my calories as closely as i was when i was losing, but i still eat well, AND, nothing about my exercise routine has changed! i think that might be the key... i think once we hit our goal weight, we think we can slack off a bit, and we can't. i think the reason i have always lost and gained before is i slacked... what made this time different for me? this time around i really paid attention to the "science" of calorie counting and learned what proper portions for me look like. and, just as i knew i had to burn more than i consumed to lose, i know that i can't consume more than i burn now, or i will gain! so i still have to pay a bit of attention, but i feel like i have control of it now, it doesn't have control of me. THAT feels really good! so, when you get to maintenance, just use what you've learned along the way to get there... it's still about moderation (i don't think you should deny yourself anything if you can eat in an appropriate portion), you HAVE to keep eating well and exercising... hitting your goal does not mean you get to go eat a pizza and a carton of ice cream, just a slice or two and a scoop! :) |

| Fitness | Yay!!! I can "run"! | Jan 12 2007 10:58 (UTC) |
|
| hey, good for you greenpea! i think running is highly addictive... there is truth in what they call a runner's high! and the best part of the high is that it tends to stay with you through the day!
starting slow is definitely a good idea... build your minutes first, then concern yourself with speed and distance. you need to build your endurance and slowing down is the best way to achieve that - i guess you figured that out last night! run on! |

| to recap... i am not going to rewrite the whole dang thing...
interval training, fartleks (we call them hiccups, as i can't stand the word fartlek)... the way to go for increasing your speed. i run everyday, but i change up my distance, it works for me... you have to listen to your body, it WILL tell you when it needs a break! cold weather running... how you dress is the only thing that needs to change... don't forget a hat and gloves! nothing worse than cold hands when you are running! hope this helps, didn't have the patience to retype what i'd already written... happy to help, though... don't forget to check out websites like coolrunning.com and runnersworld.com for really good training info... for all levels of runners! |

| Foods | New Sandwich Recipes! | Jan 11 2007 19:34 (UTC) |

| i had a sandwich tonight that i think will work it's way into my sandwich rotation... a fried egg (no oil, just a great non-stick griddle!), a slice of deli sliced ham, and a slice of low-fat cheese all stuffed into my no-fat low carb whole wheat pita!! so YUMMY!
i never liked sandwiches much until i went to italy and ate paninis... i make them all the time now... we have sandwiches/paninis at least twice a week! oh, so for a panini, i buy small ciabattas, cut them in half, and before grilling them i put a slice of cheese, some turkey or ham, a handful of arugula, and carmelized onions inside! so delish! i do carmelize the onions in butter, but i think there must be an alternative if you can't have the butter... |

| Foods | Frozen fruits... should I even bother? | Jan 09 2007 12:12 (UTC) |

| i love using frozen fruit in my smoothies, it eliminates the need for ice cubes!
you should read labels, though, to make sure no sgar was added! you can buy a prepackaged smoothie mix of fruits in the freezer section but they have TONS of added sugar! |

| Fitness | 50lbs overweight and about to start running | Jan 08 2007 19:54 (UTC) |
7 |
| i love running, too. my advice is to listen to your body... if you are comfortable running 2 miles a pop, and have time to do more, walk another one or two... this way you are getting your mileage in but keeping the stress of the weight on your joints to a minimum... it has been said that every pound you are overweight your knees feel as four when you run. i don't think your body will rebel... listen to it, it will tell you when you are pushing too hard!
good luck! |
