Weight Loss How to lose that last bit of weight and fat when already at a healthy weight? Apr 08 2009

Hey! I'm actually in the same boat as you, and 19 years old too! I'm 5'2 and at around 108 pounds. I actually looked skinner at about 112 pounds because I was more fit. I'm no expert, but the advice I can offer is that it's all about muscle and working out. You can be extremely "skinny" but still have a large amount of fat on you (remember fat weighs less than muscle) and if you're not toned...well you'll look untoned!

Hmm..I would suggest running except you have that injury. How about swimming? No matter what, you're going to have to do some cardio in addition to weights or target training (ie. ab exercises, push-ups, etc.). The cardio will help to get rid of fat all over, and sadly you can't just target areas and get rid of fat in specific areas. Your body will lose fat all over once you start working out more. The upside of working out too is that you can eat more! :) Haha I found that I lost more weight and looked much better when I was eating about 2000 calories a day and exercising for about an hour versus eating about 1500 a day without exercise.

Anyway, hopefully some of that made some sense. Good luck! :)

Oh darn...you mean the special k diet of eating only special k products for 2 weeks isnt healthy? :p TOTALLY KIDDING on that one, that diet is ridiculous.

Haha I think I should have mentioned I hate eggs....but thanks for the tip on frozen blueberries! I didn't even think of that! :) much appreciated!

What's wrong with peanut butter? It's the completley natural kind (no preservatives, extra fat, sugar, etc.)...so basically like crushed peanuts lol. It's a good source of protein and SHOULD fill me up, which is what I was going for with the almonds as well.

I just kind of grabbed the special k bars because its what I had that wasn't incredibly unhealthy. I'm a college student, so um...eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese? Yeah those things don't really fit into my budget. I had rye bread toast which is good for you, altho I could have had a salad I suppose (except no salad dressing, and who wants to just chew on lettuce?)

I guess my problem is also trying to find healthy alternatives on a budget. I had apples/bananas on hand always, and wheat/rye bread...but as far as these mushrooms, eggs, pomegranates, blueberries, etc. that are really good for you...theyre' not in season here and therefore cost me a pretty penny.

tomorrow is a new day! :) don't worry! Perhaps eating that many calories was a way for your body to say "I need those nutrients!!". Just get determined and make a promise that tomorrow will be better. Anyway, though good job on the exercising!! You may have actually inadvertently helped your metabolism by eating more calories....now wouldn't that be cool!?

Weight Loss What to do?... getting over the flu Mar 13 2009

Oh no! The flu is certaintly no fun :( I'm sure you already know this, so forgive me if this is old news...but my conscious won't let me continue unless I say this. You didn't lose 5 pounds of anything substantial from throwing up. You simply lost water, and food which will lower the number on the scale. So just remember this isn't a permanent weight loss, but that doesn't mean you can't use it to your advantage! When my weight was 3 pounds lighter on the scale from food posioning, seeing that number  really motivated me to want to get down to that weight, the RIGHT way and keep those pounds off for good!

I would resist from just taking more medicine, since you're recovering all you really need is rest and fluids (oh, and food too! :p). Your stomach might also be growling from lack of water. Have you been drinking enough? Anytime you throw up or have diarrea you lose a lot of water, and salt actually. It might seem strange, but it's a good idea to eat something that has at least some salt content (nowadays, what doesnt?!) and drink plenty of water. Gatorade is good too because it has electrolytes which will help.

The best foods to eat after being sick, in my opinion, are:

-Plain rice (brown or white)

-bananas (these are great for your stomach and very easy to digest)

-Gatorade/water/tea (without caffeine tho as this will cause you to be more dehydrated)

-Crackers, ie. Ritz, oyster, saltines

Anyway, I hope you feel better!

Fitness Treadmill vs. Running Outside Mar 13 2009

Perhaps its some sort of mental block? I know for me, I can't run without music. I can run about 3-4 miles with my iPod but take that away from me and you barely get me down my street haha. In the same way, sometimes having those numbers on the treadmill can help keep you going (yes! I'll keep running until I hit 200 calories!), yet when you're outside you have to really just push yourself.

Also, weather, self-consciousness, type of terrain you're running on can really make a difference. Oh! Also, do you hold onto the handles when you're running? That can actually make a major difference. I find when I run outside I have to be carry stuff in my hands (not even weights, just my ipod in one and cell phone in the other) or I feel naked.

Well, even if this doesn't solve your dillema or offer any insight...it sure shows my quirky, strange little habits :)

merylwhite1: I apologize for using the word "binge", however I made sure to put "binging" in quotations and specify that I didn't really think it was binging. I know exactly what you mean about people misusing words that have other connotations, but please understand that I did not in my post say "yes, this was a BINGE". In the future though, I'll make sure to be more careful of my choice of words :)

thanks to everyone for your responses :) and especially about the water retention, I will remember to keep drinking water! Hah and no exercising for me tonight...I feel like crap lol.

-Givethem_monday: I've been doing really well for 2.5 weeks, and I haven't restricted myself too much on foods, just made healthier choices. Whenever I think about sweets/cookies, I think of the treadmill. I think to myself, "k, go ahead and have 2 cookies. That's 30 minutes on the treadmill...still want them?" usually that works and I pick something like those 100 calorie snack packs or a couple hershey kisses to tide me over. I guess I wouldn't feel so awful about it right now except for the fact that I feel like hell....that was just way too much food in general! diet or not!

and to umneydurak, as long as you enjoyed it that's all that matters! I didnt even really enjoy my "binge day"...I wouldn't have thought of a burrito if it weren't for the fact that they were free. Gah, thats what happens when you're a poor college student :p

Count me in! :) I might not need to lose all those 10 pounds but I'd love to join you guys!

SW: 118

CW: 112

GW: 100-105

I must note that I'm a very short girl and VERY petite. I've been 102 before and I have never had an ED. I keep getting a lot of flack for wanting to lose this weight, so hopefully people can just accept the fact that all I'm trying to do is be healthy and let me join this group who want to lose weight!

lol read the nutrition facts on them!! I can completely relate, I LOVE the caramel delites (now called Samoas? I think). Anyway they have like 9 grams of SATURATED fat (or something like that...don't quote me on it). Of course, seeing the facts straight in front of my face does not usually stop me...but sometimes it helps.

Another thing I have found are those 100 calorie snack packs. I am IN LOVE with them! :) And just something random, I've noticed about myself is that the longer I've been healthier...the less I really crave sweets. If you can break yourself from eating too many sweets for 3 weeks (yes, I know it's a really long time!) and try to introduce healthy foods, you may develop a taste for healthier foods and lose those intense cravings. This is my opinion, not fact. It's just some of my own observations :)

Yay! :) I knew there had to be some people out there that were in the same boat as me. So let's say we have a weekly weigh in, I'm going to put a vote in for Wednesday just because Monday is such an awful day to begin with, who really wants to have it be weigh-in day as well?

Weight Loss When you reach your goal weight which actor/actress do you think you would look like, or which one would you want to look like? Mar 01 2009

Amen aidancolin!  Personally, there are many physiques that I admire and by looking at celebs who are more like me, gives me motivation. I'm happy with my body and I'm just trying to tweak things to make me feel healthier. The fact that I look at Eva Longoria as a "role-model" for her similiar 5'2 stature and petite size does not mean that I somehow hate myself and am trying to become a plastic celeb clone. Get outta here. I'm smart enough to realize that she is airbrushed to an extreme, and no I would never like TO BE Eva Longoria nor do I want her body. I love me and am comfortable in my own body. In fact, comparing myself to Eva Longoria shows that I'm REALISTIC because I KNOW I will never look like Jessica Alba (at 5'9 or something) or Tyra Banks.

On the same note, I think the way that the original post was phrased may have been cause for alarm. It did sound as though you were hoping to step out of a machine and magically look like Angelina Jolie or Heidi Klum. I'm guessing that's not what you meant, because then that WOULD be quite ridiculous!

*sigh* I can see this website is not quite what I expected. I understand all of your points and that it's not a good idea to diet and set all these goals, etc. to set yourself up for failure however that's what works best for me. By setting a deadline, I'm giving myself motivation and a goal to reach. What is wrong with goals?

"why not just lose six pounds as fast or slow as your body allows it to happen?  After years and years and years of dieting, the biggest disappointment was always looking back on how i didnt reach my goal in time.   I think its best to just work out a good healthy plan and let your body respond to it."

--> That's great advice for some people, but I just don't work well when I follow that plan. I like to have a set goal. If I don't reach my goal in 3 weeks, I'm not going to break down and stop. I'll simply continue in the same fashion until I reach my goal weight. Putting a marker on a date is just a way to remind myself to eat healthy and exercise.

"Though I have seen 108 (size 2) about 10 years ago.... I find that I now concentrate more on lifting weights and trying to get into a size 4 than what the scale actually says-- just a thought."

--> Thanks for your post! I definitely am more focused on my general appearance rather than what the scale says, however since I know that 105 was my weight just a year ago that's what I'm aiming for. Everyone has kind of a set weight that feels good and 105 was that for me, that's why I picked that number to get back down to. If I get down to 108 and feel good, then I'll stop there, but at least having a number to reach gives me a sense of purpose.

In response to jeffersonshaw, yes you do seem incredibly intelligent and seem to know a lot about dieting, nutrition and fitness. However, please don't let that mean that no one else can offer input that is different from your own.

"in the first week (the first two to three weeks, actually) it's typical to see no loss, as your body holds onto weight to see if the changes in intake and/or activity are maintained."

This statement is completely dependent on how much you work out, what foods you eat and how in shape you were to begin with. It IS very typical to see an increased weight loss in the beginning. While you are also correct that some people may experience no weight loss until the 2nd or 3rd week, please do not disregard the fact that others may experience weight loss right in the beginning. Many people lose weight to begin with and then seem to hit a plateu in the 2nd or 3rd week and have to change around their diet/work out plans.

As a kinesiology student focusing in nutrition, I do know what I'm talking about. I believe you do as well, and that's why I think instead of posting that I'm somehow "wrong", you would do better to share your wisdom without discrediting others.

Obviously I have taken what you have said into consideration and lowered my goal to 4 pounds in 3 weeks. That is within safe limits and I do expect to see weight loss. Thank you for helping me see that 6 pounds would be too much, I appreciate it.

Hi pgeorgian!

Thanks for your response. I understand your point, however the rule is 1-2 pounds per week. Therefore losing 6 pounds in 3 weeks is not unhealthy or out of the question. In the first week, it is typical to see people lose more than 2 pounds (sometimes around 3-4) because their metabolism experiences a "shock" so to speak. Therefore, losing 1 pound each week after that would put me at my goal of 6 pounds in 3 weeks.

Thanks for your concern, but don't worry! 1-2 pounds a week is my target weight loss per week and I know that going over that will simply be water weight, or weight that I'll almost instantly gain back the second I eat something.

EDIT: I changed the title to 4 pounds in 3 weeks. That way it's an easier more realistic goal, but if somehow I magically end up losing 6....that's okay with me too :)
