Fitness How much do I need to add to my activity log? May 05 2009

I only add my workouts and other semi intense activities.  But I'd prefer to underestimate than overestimate on the activity log.  If you don't add every little thing that you do you're less likely to overestimate actual calories burned.

Weight Loss When do you weigh yourself? May 04 2009

I weigh every day.  Although it is stressful for some people I find that it helps keep me motivated.  Knowing what my weight is every day helps me stay within my calorie intake range daily.  I also weigh at the gym in afternoon before working out because I don't like home scales (prefer the dr office style).  So if my weight is a little higher it gives me a little boost to put more effort into my workout.  But at the same time a 1-2lb fluctuation doesn't really affect me negatively like some people.  I sort of expect it since I have eaten, drank and am clothed.  If I were to take the number on the scale more to heart then I would weigh first thing in the morning on an empty stomach without any clothes on to get the most accurate weight.  I'm also a huge fan of taking body measurements.  Sometimes it can be a bit discouraging to not see the weight come off as expected but seeing the difference in inches helps me with that issue.  Good luck.

Weight Loss Can someone explain how you can hit a plateau if calories burned are always higher than calories in? May 04 2009

Well calories taken in are a lot easier to calculate accurately than calories burned.  Everything listed for burned calories is just an estimate.  The more your body adapts to the exercises you're doing the easier it becomes, therefore using less oxygen and burning less calories.  That's why it's suggested to slightly increase intensity on cardio workouts regularly and change up routines.  Weight loss is a long and grueling road that requires lots of updated changes based on the progress you're making.  Good luck and stay motivated!!

Fitness Muscle / Fat Question (cut me slack, I'm a noob!) Mar 13 2009

My opinion from experience and reading material is that it is never to early to start weight lifting.  My understanding is that muscle burns more calories than fat.  So worst case scenario if you start lifting immediately is that you'll notice a loss of fat in inches and not in pounds.  So along with a healthy diet and cardio, weightlifting should help your fat loss while toning your body.  If you do choose to start weight lifting it might be a good idea to invest in a body tape to measure your progress in inches so that you aren't discouraged by weight.  Best of luck!  Wink
