| I usually toss the yolks. Most of the good stuff (PROTEIN!) is in the whites. Or sometimes I do a 3 whites with 1 yolk ratio. | |||

| New Members | new- How many grams of Protien, Carbohydrates,fat, & fiber | Jan 03 2008 00:08 (UTC) |

| The recommendation is to have a good ratio of calories, 40-50% Carbs, 25-35% protein, 20-30% fat. Under 2500 mg of sodium and over 25 grams of fiber. This information can be found once you enter information into your Food Log and using the Analysis tool from the top menu. To figure out the math to determine the number of grams of Carbs, Protein and Fat you should consume, take the total number of calories you are suppose to consume. Divide it by the precentages you are using. So for Carbs you will have a number of calories that represent a fraction of the total, same for protein and fat. Then you take each of those number of calories, and you divide Carbs by 4 to get the total grams, Protein by 4 to get the total grams and Fat by 9 to get the total grams. For example: The Math for a 1200 Daily Calorie Goal: 40-50% Carbs = 480-600 calories (120-150 grams) 25-35% Protein = 300-420 calories (75-105 grams) 20-30% Fat = 240-360 calories (26-40 grams) Aim for 25 gram or more of Fiber Aim for 2500 mg or less of Sodium Aim for 1 Gallon of Water = 16 eight oz cups = 128 oz Reference: http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/8532 .html |

| Since this is an opinion based conversation, I will share my thoughts on the subject. I feel very passionately that the government should not be involved in any decision regarding what a person does with their own body. Be that if they choose to snort cocaine, obtain an abortion or drink too much coffee. =) Nor would I ever want to feel that I am entitled to tell someone what to do with their own body. It's just like being here on Calorie-Count.com, I have to make the journey to a healthier lifestyle on my own. No one is going to come and stop me from having an Oreo; it is a choice I have to make with my own freewill. And bless that we all have the opportunity to exercise our right of freewill. Now, with that all said... I really do believe that in the world today, it is growing ever more challenging to share and express our own opinions in a society that has become so sensitive and politically correct. So I share with you my own personal experience. I have chosen open adoption twice in my life, 8 years apart. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of each of those decisions, that they don't weigh on my conscious and in some ways, have shaped the person that I am today... but I do not live with regret. I really do believe that I made the best possible decision for where my life was at the time, the situation that I was involved in and even where I am at this day. I admit that my life is currently not in a place to accept the responsibility of a child at this time and that is a very hard thing to admit, but it is very personal to me. And I think that is very important to point out - it is personal. My heart goes out to any women that has to weigh these sort of decisions. Shortly after the adoption of my first child, it was difficult, because when I told people about the choices I made, I very much felt like they were judging me in a negative manner. They had children and they just didn't understand how I could have made the decision I made. Then much later, I surrounded myself with people whom had a similar experience to my own, that had been through the open adoption process. Then it became a more positive aspect in my life and I started on the road to internal healing mostly from beating myself up, feeling defective. It's very difficult to explain and not something I really want to go much into here - as before I know it, would have contributed a novelette! =) I think that is the most important thing, is to accept our own choices as our own and to not allow someone's inexperience with the decisions that we face, as individuals, influences the way how we feel about those decisions. No one, can ever really know what it is like to be in the shoes of another person. I just don't get why sometimes folks feel they are involved in the decisions of another person. We each have to live our own lives. So I am all for, to each their own! I do have a question for those that are pro-life. How in the heck do you handle accidently hitting an animal with your car? That's a lot of how I see abortion. While it's not right for me, who am I to say if it is right for another person. Everyday animals get hit on the road. All those little bugs on the windshield. Even folks having their pets put down to end the suffering. Yet elderly people continue to suffer in their own age. What makes human life more valuable than that of animals and bugs? Why do we, as humans, have compassion for an animal that is suffering, but not for our grandmothers or grandfathers? Yeah, I know... sort of all over the place. I'll drink some more coffee. =) Thanks for interesting topic of conversation and allowing me to participate. |

| Foods | Olive Oil or Corn Oil | Dec 04 2007 18:41 (UTC) |

| Corn scares the hibbie-gibbies out of me! It's sneaky how much of it is crammed into almost everything, especially how much corn syrup is used to make things sickly sweet. ICK! Google for some of the articles by Michael Pollan if you want to learn more. I try to seriously limit the amount of corn in my diet.
Olive Oil is a good - but I prefer Walnut Oil for everyday cooking, it is a super healthy choice and some "experts" say better for you than Olive Oil. Whatever you choose, do what is right for you! |

| Hi there! I drink around 4L of water per day (on good days, that is my goal) - I've been doing it for 6+ months and I feel super duper! As for being bad for the planet... well, there's a lot of crap screwing around and messing up the planet, so I think you'll be find without however much water you feel your body needs. =) | |||
| Foods | Coffee Debate | Nov 03 2007 16:37 (UTC) |

| I think a lot depends on the type of coffee you choose to drink. Foldgers vs. Dark Organic varieties. Just remember, that caffeine is a drug. For antioxidants, I turn to acai berries and Raw Cocoa Nibs. I used to be a devoted coffee junkie, but have pretty much been coffee-free for over 6 months, only enjoying on once in a while - like when out with friends. Remember, with anything, the good rule of thumb is moderation. Don't deprive yourself, but don't over do it. =) | |||

| Canned soup is so overpriced. Besides full of way too much sodium. There is lots of great stuff that super cheap and good for you. Brown rice, potatoes, frozen broccoli... BEANS! Lots of beans. Learn how to cook dried beans. If you can afford $1.00 per day for food, which is about the cost of a can of Campbell's soup, then you can afford to eat much healthier! | |||

| Update on Poison Ivy situation, I asked someone that studied botany and this was their response: "Nope, poison ivy has asymmetrical leaflets, that is, the leaflets are only toothed on one side of the leaf margin. The main key that gives away poison ivy is the asymmetrical leaflets and the shininess of the leaves. If I were to take a guess, I'd say these leafs are from a blackberry or related rose family member." Thanks to everyone that came by gave some feedback! |

| Hey there. Saturdays are usually slow on the public forums, so sometimes it takes a bit of time for someone to come along and offer feedback.
First, make sure you are getting a good ratio of calories. 40-50% Carbs, 25-35% protein, 20-30% fat. Under 2500 mg of sodium and over 25 grams of fiber. This information can be found once you enter information into your Food Log and using the Analysis tool from the top menu. Second, it really really is important to get enough fat in your diet. You need fat to bond with vegetable and fruit vitamin molecules and for you body to absorb those nutrients, it needs fat to do so. Try to get your fat content from good fats, such as olive oil, fish and nuts. It's been about a year, but so far I have successfully lost about 80 lbs. When I first started out, I put some of the tips together in a thread, you are more than welcome to check it out: http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/8532 .html Good luck on your journey! |

| Hi there! My first few months, I ate super healthy and everything I was suppose to do.... I actually gained 4 lbs. Then I read this article:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/core_march_8. htm ... and it totally changed everything. I put together some information I learned in the beginning in this thread: http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/8532 .html Now here it is just over a year later and I have lost close to 80 lbs, but better than that, I have developed healthy habits that will last me the rest of my life. Good luck on your journey! |

| Second choice would be goji berries. "Goji berries are incredibly nutritious. For their weight -- a daily serving is only 10 to 30 grams -- goji berries have more vitamin C than oranges, more beta carotene than carrots and more iron than steak. Beta carotene is believed to help fight heart disease and also protects the skin from sun damage. Goji berries are also a good source of B vitamins and antioxidants, which protect against harmful free radicals that damage cells in your body. They?re also rich in polysaccharides, which aid the immune system, have 18 kinds of amino acids, and are a rich source of potassium." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfberry http://health.howstuffworks.com/goji-berry1.h tm |

| I love smoothies made with acai berries. "The acai berry is loaded with antioxidants, anthocyanins (approximately 20 times the amount in red wine), amino acids, essential omegas, fibers and protein. Some recent studies from the University of Florida indicate that Acai may even fight cancer cells: "Brazilian berry destroys cancer cells in lab, UF study shows". http://www.acairoots.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acai http://www.acaiberryjuice.org/ http://www2.oprah.com/presents/2005/young/lif e/life_acai.jhtml |

| My favorite thing to mix with tuna is non-fat cottage cheese... but here is something I wrote a while back on the subject:
Suggestions for what to mix with tuna, salmon, chicken and turkey to put in a tortilla wrap or pita. You can use flour tortilla, whole wheat or one of those flavored ones. You can also use whole wheat pitas or some of those ones with nuts. Take a can of tuna, salmon, chopped chicken (canned or cooked) or turkey. This could even work with turkey lunch meat. Add any of the following in any amount, dependent on your own tastes into a bowl. Mix and add to pita or tortilla: lemon juice olive oil balsamic vinagerette cottage cheese diced tomatoes chopped spinach chopped celery chopped pickles (sweet or dill) shredded carrots dried cranberries roasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds fresh green peas sliced strawberries fresh raspberries or blackberries chopped cashews or walnuts or blanched almonds pear or apple, diced water chestnuts, chopped fine onion, diced cucumber, sliced sprouts, any variety grapes, cut in half mustard powder paprika or cayenne black pepper |
