| Fitness | Swimmers - What do YOU think about? | Nov 04 2009 21:28 (UTC) |

If I am swimming distance, I watch time mostly..I used to count by 10's, then I would lose track and start over, I know I can easily do 75-100 laps in an hour of free, so it doesn't really matter to me how many as long as I swim for the whole hour. I usually break it up into 100's, I do 100 free, 100 with flippers, 100 kick, 100 breast and 100 pull, then start all over...I try to finish 5 of these in 1hour, but if I am tired, 4 is okay :) I don't have to think to count to 4 :) Once in a while I will do 20 laps free, then 20 pull, 20 free and 20 pull, I only count the even numbers, this helps me not lose track. Good Luck, I might have to try some of your counting tricks too! |

I swim year round and I buy my stuff on Swim2000. They have a lot of stuff, you can get the "grab bags" for really cheap. I buy mostly the higher end competion suits since I swim a lot, those are usually around 50.00 Good luck! |

I also love it in oatmeal. I use 1/3cup quick oats and add in 1/3 cup canned pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice and Splenda. I also just heat up 1/2cup canned pumpkin with pumpkin pie spice and Splenda, add cinnamon and ginger if u want, or smoe FF Redi-Whip, it's like the inside of the pumpkin pie, but only 40-50 cals depending what you add :) Pumpkin soup is awesome too! |

Yesterday I tried it using a pack of High Fiber Instant Oatmeal with 3/4cup H20, then added 1/2 cup pumpkin, Splenda and pumpkin pie spice. It was real pumpkin flavored, barely could taste the oatmeal, but I love pumpkin. I am going to try it with quick oats today. |

Sokkies, that's funny because I consider myself an apple too!! I never had much of a waist, but now I guess I do...I think what helps me is my thin narrow hips, no butt and chicken legs...most if not all of my fat is in my abdomen now. I want to weigh 130-125lb depending on the body fat. Per measurements, my body fat is 27% now, I want it closer to 20-21%. I am good with a size 6-8, 8 was actually my goal size. i measure large bone. The size thing is messing with me...I never was able to buy fitted dresses because my upper half was always so much bigger than my lower half, but I now own a fitted designer dress that is a size 6!! CRAZY!! |

| Health & Support | prickly feeling in throat symptom of food allergy? | Oct 12 2009 02:33 (UTC) |
2 |
I have a lot of food allergies and the scratchy, itchy throat thing is usually my first or second(hives) reaction if I accidentally ate something I am allergic to. I couldn't tell you what it feels like later because I take Epi or Benadryl if I don't have the Epi...if not my throat closes and I don't remember much after that. I would stay away from apples if I were you :) |

Fitnessgirl: My Chiari is is a bad place, the tonsils are encapsulated in the foraum magnum..not descended..so only surgery if CSF flow is obstructed, which on the last 2 sets or studies, it was not. It is mostly pain control...kinda like migraine prevention..I use some migraine drugs and antinflamatories wehn it is aggravated...muscle relaxer at night to protect it during sleep. I can add cardio..already am to the swimming..and can lift decent weight on lower body..but upper body lifting due to the engaging of the neck muscles is contraindicated. It's not really a PT kind of thing...since it is not correctable...When they found it, it was after a hard 3 mile run and lifting upper body, I got really sick that night, landed up in the ER and hospital for 3 days...anyway, I was told to be careful with impact and no lifting upper body. During this 3 years trying to manage the headaches and pain control, I gained 40-45lbs..which I have now lost 50lbs or so...headaches and pain really under control, swimming is great for it! I am just trying to shock my body into getting over this plateau and dropping this last 20lbs to reach my goal weight, hence the OP :) |

Sorry, did not mean to imply(sp) that I am a beginner lifting weights. I previously lifted weights and ran for approx 6 years...until they found the Chiari Malformation...now due to the impact, I am not advised to lift weights for my upper body(hence the light weights) or run. I also worked with 2 different personal trainers when I was building a program for the 1/2 marathon and lifting I was doing, so I have a pretty good base to build upon. I have heard from other sources, that lighter weight and increased reps can help with toning..not building muscles. I plan to increase the weight on the lower body resistance training. Fitnessgirl: I DO NOT want to replace swimming with other cardio, I want to swim and add in more cardio. |

I am not interested in debating the safety in MSG either. I happen to be one of those people who has serious reactions to it and avoid it at all cost. What works for me... Don't eat most fast food, processed food or canned soups. Specific, Taco Bell, KFC, Chinese unless no MSG. Most soup mixes, dressings, Ramen, flavored chips and dips, Stove Top or other stuffing mixes...basically eat real, clean food, fresh fruit, veggies, lean meats, whole grains and dairy...then it is easy. To address your comment about it is easy to see on the ingredients...know that there are multiple names for MSG....which of course, I can not find the article that writes this all out for me....I will keep looking and post when I find it. Good Luck. |

I love quinoa!! I am not a red meat eater, so this is a good protein source for me. I use chicken broth and chopped veggies to cook it. The type I have you just place 1/4 cup of dry quinoa into a pan with 2:1 ratio of liquid, I double this because I like it soft like oatmeal rather than rice. I cook it on a simmer until the liquid is absorbed. I guess it depends on the kind you buy, I have heard that red quinoa is great as well. |

| Fitness | lifting weights bores me...will swimming tone my arms?... | Aug 19 2009 01:45 (UTC) |

I agree with most of the above posts, I usually swim 3-4h a week, crawl mostly, and have noted toning in my triceps and shoulders, along with my back and core muscles. I just started adding breaststroke into the mix, and really feel it in my biceps and chest...I'll let you know if I notice any additional toning. |
