Thanks for the adivice everyone. I guess I'll just have to get used to eating more calories. It's a big adjustment after dieting.

yes because you have trained your body to use energy more efficiently

Awesome. And that's good because you're right my appetite has increased a lot since I reached 120 that's why I decided to maintain. I was going to try to get to one 115 but I just got hungry all the time so I decided 120 was good. lol.

You're probably more active than you're giving yourself credit for.  In my book, running around after a 1 year old (and I'm guess picking up and putting down said 1 year old over and over) is not "light" activity.  It's "moderate" at least.

 Wow! I didn't even realize.

No you have simply gained muscle my exercising. Mucle is more dense than fat, meaning it weighs more. So you have lost fat, gained muscle, and you metabolism has increased due to exercise, which is why you are able to eat more. Hope this helps!

So the exercise while I was dieting gave me more muscle and made me hungrier. But now with no exercise I am still able to maintain with 1700-1800 because of the extra muscle gained?

Pregnancy & Parenting How to deal with "skinny moms". Aug 24 2009
00:38 (UTC)

Ok I'm sorry I have to chime in here. I am a mom! I have an 18 month old little boy and I am 120 pounds. I am also 23 years old and 5'4", just like you.

I AM SKINNY. YOU ARE SKINNY AS WELL! I can't believe you would even think for a second at 118 pounds that you are not skinny. If you are not skinny then what does that make me? Seriously...?

Second off yes I do know what it is like to be jealous of skinny moms but guess what that was because I was fat and wasn't doing anything about it at the time. Now that I have been working at it after 25 pounds lost I am very happy with my body.

Also how do you know that these moms are effortlessly skinny? I can tell you I know no one who is effortlessly skinny unless they have a medical condition. They probably work their butts off to stay that thin. And yes some people do have a smaller frame that’s just the way life is. It all has to do with genetics. I am bigger up top with really skinny legs. That’s just the way I am shaped and I can't change that. If people are skinny right after they had their baby it’s either because A. they were very careful to eat well during their pregnancy. B. They have something medically wrong with them. You don’t know what their eating habits are like. They may not eat at all for all you know. Breast feeding also has a major affect on some women and helps them burn off calories really fast.

I remember when I moved to the place I am now over a year ago, a girl my age was in my church who also had a baby about my age and she was 118 pounds just like you. At the time I was 150 pounds and SO JEALOUS OF HER. Well guess what. I ended up becoming friends with this girl and I got to know her really well. She showed me pictures of when she first had her baby and it turns out that I judged her unfairly because she had lost a whooping 45 pounds after her pregnancy. She was huge before she decided to do something about it and here I was thinking she was effortlessly skinny when she really worked hard to lose all the baby weight. I'm glad she never knew I was jealous or I would have been really embarrassed.

I'm really not trying to offend you but I think you may have serious body issues if you are still dissatisfied with yourself at 118 pounds. Maybe you should talk to someone about that because you are completely fine.

At 23 years old you should be shopping in the women's department. You are no longer a junior. There is no reason to be jealous of people in size 0's at the age of 40. I would be concerned because they most likely have something wrong with them maybe some kind of medical condition that makes them that thin. I know a woman like that... anyway.

The last time I was a size 0 was probably when I was 12. I have been a size 2 to 3 ever since I was 14 and I am very happy with that. BECAUSE I AM THIN.

Face it you are one of those skinny moms and people are probably jealous of you for looking the way you do. Just think about that. :)

Weight Loss Fat girls...Pretty Faces? Jul 31 2009

When I was overweight my hair was actually the thing I focused on the most because it never changed. It was always pretty no matter how big I was.

I thought I had a pretty face when I was thin but then when I gained weight and my face got all fat I thought I looked ugly.

I think I look 100 times prettier with a thinner face. But that's just me I guess. The face is the first thing most people notice. I hated when it was fat.

I am addicted to diet coke so I have one a day. It has not affected my dieting. It does not make me hungry. it actually fills me up. I have lost about 25 pounds so far. If you want it, drink it. It doesn't screw up weight loss.

Are you getting side stitches? Severe pain near your liver? I got those for months, it was completely awful. If I didn't stop running, the pain became so unbearable I felt like passing out.

Unfortunately, the only way I've gotten rid of them is by slowing down my running pace. It kinda sucks, since I'm training for a race, but I was getting nowhere when I was having to stop every mile because of my side stitch.

I have pain when I hula hoop sometimes where my incisions are. I had gallbladder surgery over a year ago. I would think I would be fine to exercise now though. :(

i got side stitches running too...

how heavy is you hoop?

It's not too heavy it's a water hoop I got it at walmart.

Weight Loss ADVICE NEEDED! How much is too much? I'm lost. Jul 29 2009

I think you need to relax a little bit and see how much you actually maintain on.  Maintenance takes a bit of playing around with calories/exercise until you find out where YOUR balance is.  You don't say if you have gained weight.

If I were you, I would keep the exercise to about an hour, at most, and then watch the scale.  If you see the weight creeping up, either cut back on your calories or up your exercise a little.  Also, from the sounds of it (family visiting, etc) your life right now isn't really following your normal routine.  If that is the case, then I wouldn't worry about it, and take it as a "holiday gain" - just keep up with your normal exercise, and then you can watch your intake for a bit once your relatives leave and life returns to normal.

The important thing though is that you don't want to be obsessing.  And you certainly don't want to risk injuring yourself with 2 hours of exercise a day!!

Thanks I think you are right. My family has left and I'm already settled back into my old routine. I was just freaking out over nothing.

invest in a heartrate monitor that calculates calories burned. It will give you a fairly accurate account of how many calories you burn while exercising.

Cool. Thanks. I'll have to look into those.

I definitely think you are being obsessive about it. You still did over an hour of aerobic exercise. That's plenty!  If you eat 2000, and need over 1550 to maintain, then you "need" to burn 500 to come out even.

yes but I am not sure how much I burn in one hour. I have heard more than one person say on this site that one hour of exercise hardly helps at all. :(

People sound so disappointed when you tell them "I'm exercising and counting my calories." They want to hear you're on some magic pill or some wild and crazy overnight thing. They don't want to hear that to achieve real results they're going to have to work hard, just like you.

I find it amusing :P

Sadly it's typical in this country for people to actually believe the celebs and people that are thin just sit on their asses and eat Mcdonalds everyday. You'd think more people would be smarter than that but alas the majority are ignorant to the fact that I and most people that look just like me exercise for at least two hours a day and monitor everything that goes into our mouths for the sake of holding onto our health and our figures.

i feel your pain. my family is always on my back about how much exercise i am doing and how little i am eating when in the long run i am just being healthy, exercising, and spacing out my meals inside of indulging 3 times a day.

stick to your healthy ways, you'll find more satisfaction in yourself than you will from others but who really cares what they think as long as you are happy. =)

I know! I have been eating crap all this week (cause with my family here sadly I have a hard time resisting). And I have managed to pretty much maintain my current weight with two hours of exercise everyday. My family not only makes fun of me for exercising but they actually get mad at me and say that I don't need to....(like hell I don't need to.) They say I am already skinny and a couple of days of pigging out won't hurt me... (um more like a week not just days and yes it will make me gain if I don't do something to burn it off.)

I say to them "Um you understand when you eat  thousands upon thousands of calories a day and then just sit around it just sticks to you right?" They just get annoyed with me. I am just being honest. I am actually proud of myself for not just sitting on my ass and for getting up and paying the price for my actions. It was me who decided to pig out not them, but at least I could help myself recover with exercise.

how is it not fair that they eat a burger and you have a salad, just because you care about your health and weight doesn't mean everyone else in the world is going to..

as far as everyone asking you how you lost weight, everyones always looking for a quick easy fix that takes no effort. I guess they think if they ask enough people someone will have the magic answer !

When I quit smoking everyone asked " how did you do it?" I would reply "I quit buying them.."

It does suck to me when I eat a salad and I don't want one at the time. I have only been doing this for not even six months. Sometimes I still have a hard time with temptations. I do choose a salad but that doesn't mean I don't want a burger. I also hate watching them shove their faces with crap and then telling me they care about losing weight. And I never said I thought that everyone should join me. I'm just stating how hard it is because I am a team eater. By myself and with people who are supportive, I am fine but the people around me sadly influence my eating the most. Luckily they are the ony ones who are unsupportive of my change and they live far away. :)

That is funny about how you said you stopped buying them LOL!

I'm tired of people asking me what the secret to weight loss is. There is no secret! Sometimes I just want to yell at them"THE SECRET IS... DON'T EAT SO MUCH! and it not a secret it's just plain common sense." Whenever they hear about my keeping a food diary or this site they stick their noses up in the air and claim it's too hard. Well sorry folks life is hard. Losing weight is not any different. I am so sick of it.... sorry just needed a rant.

Oh, yeah! LOL! It's almost comical to watch how disappointed people get when I tell them what I'm doing. One woman said, "Oh. You're doing it the right way." She sounded so let down. I think she was hoping to hear that I'd used magic pixie dust or something.

Good luck with the family.  There's a proverb: No man is a prophet in his own home town.

lol glad I'm not alone in feeling that way sometimes.

Apparently the theory behind it is that it keeps your metabolism running at full rather than slowing it down on a constant calorie restricting diet.

Yes but the minimum amount of calories for an adult women is 1200, An adult male 1500. You need at least that amount everyday to not starve. if you eat 400 -600  every other day that is still starving yourself even if it's only for a 24 hour period. you will eventually want to pig out everyday and not just every other day because your body will be asking for more food. this will confuse your metabolism and you will gain weight, a lot more weight  then when you started. it's like your body's way of trying to make up for what has been lost. it's not healthy. I wouldn't try it.

Now I'm about 123 pounds and I'm in a size 2 jeans. I started to be able to fit into my size 2 when I was about 130 pounds. My legs have always been the thinnest part on my body my arms are still the biggest. but luckily now I'm finally in a small size shirt instead of a medium so I must be losing something up there! :)

im really glad you asked this question cuz i was kind of wondering the same thing.

also to add to your question - lets say i have eaten all my calories for the day, its 10:00 PM and im about to go to bed but i get hungry urges really bad. is it okay to indulge in a diet coke to fill me up instead of reaching for food?

Of course it's ok. a diet coke is 0 calories. It will however make you gain a little weight because of the sodium. if you want to get rid of the water weight ironically you have to drink more water.

I would also think drinking a soda that late could keep you awake. but if  you think it won't keep you up by all means go ahead.

It will be fine as long as you dont consume it all day like water. I am addicted to diet coke and I wasn't gonna give it up just because I started dieting. I drink water all day long and for every meal except dinner. for dinner I drink one diet coke. I have lost 23 pounds.  It won't ruin your diet. so don't worry.

Buy yourself some new clothes, get a haircut, a massage, give yourself a facial, paint your nails, get up early to savour time alone reading a good book, or go on a long walk - whatever it takes to feel good about the skin you're in. Buying clothes in a smaller size will help it sink in that you are smaller now.

I think sometimes when people lose weight, part of the reason they feel lost and uncomfortable is that they no longer have the thrill of losing weight to keep them feeling good about themselves. Seeing your body change and the number on the scale drop, counting calories etc can be addictive - it's like getting positive reinforcement that you are doing something "right" in your life. So change your focus; start thinking about other healthy lifestyle changes you can make. You could work on healthy eating goals or fitness goals instead.

Getting fitter can also mean you can look smaller without losing weight, and burn more calories into the bargain. Perhaps when you were 120lbs a few years ago you had more muscle and less fat?

Also be wary of going too far. The last thing you want is to begin sliding into eating disorder territory. So, focus on the positives of your new body, do things to feel good about yourself and enjoy being able to eat maintenance!

thanks that's some really great advice!
