East cobber snobbers & pretentiousness (we gotta buy that $400K house because our house is only $350! You can't bring SMORES for dessert at my fancy party!)

People who make generic assumptions based on geographic area.

Second this...

Also second the putters in the fast lane...drives me NUTS (excuse the pun).

Also second those that contradict every single thing I say...equally as annoying are those people who already know something about everything you say or do and know how to say or do it better.

Third the annoying, misbehaved, and poorly groomed children.

Add...people who constantly use the words "I can't".  Just do it!!!!

Also add people who leave the holiday decorations up WAY past the holiday.  February is NO TIME FOR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!!!  Ugh!

Last one..people who leave the political bumper stickers on way after the election.  We know Obama won.  Take the sticker off.

Oops...I listed 7...I'm sure that's somebody's pet peeve...people who don't follow directions.  Sorry!  Embarassed

Weight Loss Green Tea? May 19 2009
17:16 (UTC)

I drink green tea daily.  The hot stuff, real green tea leaves (not the pre bagged flavored kind which is supposedly not as "good" for you) and I can tell you I am losing weight one pound at a time like everybody else.  I drink  anywhere from 3 to 6 cups a day simply because I like it and it's an added plus that I'm adding antioxidants to my diet.  I've never noticed a dramatic drop in my weight.

So, though they claim it does give the metabolism a boost, it's probably negligible like drinking cold water or chewing gum.  Unfortunately there really is no quick fix or metabolism booster other than eating healthy, within your calorie range and getting active.

It may not take you that long.  I know for me it takes me anywhere from 4 to 7 days to get back down after a really bad weekend.  It's only a number on the scale.  Don't worry!!

I'm sure you've heard it before...but you would have had to eat 3500 calories over maintenance to gain ONE pound. You're most likely bloated from water retention because of a higher salt intake. Give yourself a week and you'll be back down.  In the mean time, lots of water to flush out the bloat, do some good cardio/weight sessions to sweat it out and don't stress.  ;)  You gotta live a little.  Just get back on track today.

Weight Loss Patterns and Activity Level May 16 2009

Original Post by nomnom:

This had me looking into the days where my weight rose then dropped, and I realized that it was on the days I ate 2000 + calories, the day after, I lost weight and it stayed off.  Is this a common thing, or just coincidence, does anyone else have a similar pattern?

I'm a data hound so I keep daily logs, not just weight but all the other metrics my scale gives me, so that I can discern trends and patterns. I haven't noted any related to calorie intake for myself. I don't purposefully zig-zag. A social life takes care of that for me but it can go from 1200 - 1600.

My patterns come about from my period and times when I've been sick. I'll get a drastic drop right before my period (I know this sounds counter-intuitive), a rise during it, then a drop back to where I should be. This has been repeating itself consistently. I've noticed as my weight has gone down the fluctuations have gotten a lot more dramatic.

Jturnerx, ME TOO!  So glad to hear somebody else is noticing larger fluctuations during that time since weight loss.  When I first started the gain/drop would be about two pounds total.  Since I've lost nearly 13 pounds, this past month I dropped one pound before, gained nearly 5 during and dropped 3 after!  I'm at an all time low today (day after).  Though that thrills me, I'm going to wait to weigh in next week and see if it stays off or if it's just part of this new cycle of gaining and losing.

Edit to note that i didn't lose 13 pounds in one month of course...I just mean this past month I noticed the larger gains/losses.

I'm feeling totally under the weather today, so maybe listing my little victories this past week will help me...

Monday I went shopping at the Gap where I have been holding steady in a size 8/M.  Went to the dressing room with size 8 jeans and M skirt.  Had to put my own clothes back on, put them both back and return to the dressing room with a size 6 jeans and S skirt...and...they both fit!  (I'm still an 8 in my Express jeans, but they are in need of belts now!)

Also, Thursday is my weigh in day, been holding at 147 for two weeks.  Today, I broke to 146 AND it's my TOTM!!  Maybe I'll drop a little more once the bloat subsides.

Yeah...that did feel good to post!

Pretzels and cream cheese (any pretzel even the big soft hot pretzels).  It is SOOOO good and when we go to our mountain house we still treat ourselves to this little treat.

I also do the chips in sandwiches but only when it's on soft white bread and has american cheese on it.  Usually bologna or ham as the meat (haven't done that since my early 20's).

Mix cream cheese in salsa for a creamy, savory dip for anything dip-able.

I also do the peanut butter and syrup sandwich (YUM!).

Weight Loss exercise with cold. May 13 2009

Just got back from the Dr myself.  Same as you, I took yesterday off because I felt the start of a cold coming, woke up this morning with a horrible sore throat and just general aches and pains. The doc said that doing some light cardio is actually good for a cold virus.  He told me to avoid the gym because the immune system is compromised, but some light cardio at home is fine.  So I did.  Nowhere NEAR what I usually do, but it at least made me feel like I did something.  But it's really up to how you feel.  If you're worse off than me, than a couple days of rest won't ruin your efforts.

Hope you feel better.  Spring colds STINK!  :(

I've never used egg or bread crumbs and my burgers stick together just fine.  I use the onion soup mix recipe mentioned already and another good way to get juicy burgers when using very lean meats or 99% fat free turkey breast is to grate (or finley chop) some onion in them or a splash of beef or chicken stock.  Makes them nice and juicy without the added sodium of the soup mix.  Mmmm...I'm thinking turkey burgers tonight for dinner now!

Don't know where to run?  You'll be in NYC!!  Go to central park!  All around the park and through it there is a section of "road" I guess you would call it dedicated to runners, bikers, roller bladers.  It's a great thing to do!  Just go during the day hours when it's light.  you'll see tons of people running there.

Edit:  Here's a link for ya: http://www.centralpark.com/pages/sports/runni ng.html

Have fun!!

Weight Loss Carbs... May 11 2009

Original Post by gi-jane:

Agree with the above.  The calories (energy) you take in will affect your weight most.   A healthy amount of carbohydrates would be anything from 40-65% of your daily calories.  What can make a difference to weight is the type of carbohydate.   Simple sugars and starches, for example, take no time for the body to break down and if your diet is high in these foods it can be low in nutrition and very unsatisfying on limited calories.   But if you choose complex carbohydrates such as vegetables, starchy vegetables, wholegrain foods, pulses (legumes) & fruit you will find they are more satisfying and that your calories go a lot further.

Listen to this woman.  She is spot on!  Calories in less than calories out is what affects your weight loss...not the amount of carbs.  Complex carbs keep you satisfied, processed carbs don't.  This says it all right here.

Played with my three nieces (ages 4 through 8) from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m.  Including planting an herb garden, walking to the park, climbing on the jungle gym, pushing on the swings, walking through the entire neighborhood so they could show me all the houses they like best, picking flowers (aka:  weeds) in the field behind the neighborhood, and playing wii Baseball for an hour.  I had every intention of taking the dogs on a hike when I got home, but instead I took hubby to pick up his car, went to the grocery store and now am making dinner...I think I'm DONE (and VERY appreciative of all the mothers out there)!   Does any of this count?

American Eagle is it's own brand and has it's own store.  Most malls have them.  If you go to AE.com you can see where there is a store near you (use the Find a Store link at the top of the home page).

As I was reading your post, I was thinking the exact same thing Susiecue posted.  This happened to me.  I was working hard 6 days a week and mildly on my "rest" day and I was so tired I could barely make it till the sun went down.  Talked to a friend of mine who is in the health and wellness field and she told me to take a week off...I did...and the next week I was better than EVER and I still lost a pound.  You really should give yourself one full day a week of no strenuous exercise...maybe two for a while till you get your strength back.  It's hard, but you may feel MUCH better if this is in fact the problem.

Hope you feel better soon!!

Well, that depends on your spending range.  My favorite brand on the lower end are by far express...now that I can fit back into them.  They wash well, look great and I like how the pockets dont' make my butt look any bigger.  LOL!  Gap has one style that I like alot, the low rise boot cut...but for me, the waist is always so big on them if I get them to fit my...ah...curvy tuckus.  I always have to have them altered.

If you're willing to spend a little more money, I love seven for all mankind.  Comfy cotton, look great and only get better the longer you have them.   But these too I must always have altered...but only because they're for the taller ladies and I'm a shorty.

I'm always up for trying new brands...but these seem to be the three I always go back to.

just looked up Seven - waayyyy too much $$$ for my pocketbook! gee, do normal people really spend that much on jeans??  I'm thinking around $50...but thanks for reply.

*shamefully*  I do Embarassed...but I did give you two that I like that are WAY less expensive!!!  I find that Express is the closest to Seven as far as the look I like...and easier on the wallet.

I have some form of complex carb for every meal (for example:  whole wheat toast or high fiber cereal for breakast/whole wheat bread or  black beans for lunch/brown rice, whole wheat pasta/quinoa for dinner).  Carbs generally make up 40 - 45% of my diet.  I NEVER eat white, bleached, enriched anything...just whole wheat, rye, whole grain.  I have successfully dropped nearly 12 pounds since February 16th.  I would say it's all about the quality of food, and the simple equation of calories in being less than calories out.

I try to stick to a glass of wine per night, or try a vodka and tonic water when you go out.  Maybe limit yourself to 3 drinks, have one, then a glass of water, then a drink, and a glass of water etc.

Tonic water has nearly as many calories as a regular soda.  Go for club soda (0 calories) and a twist of lime, lemon, orange...whatever fruit you fancy.  Much less caloric.  ;)

Elfinpiclke, you're also three inches taller than us...don't taller girls usually have to wear bigger sizes than those of us who are...eh, um...vertically challenged?  When I was 158 I was in 8-10's and I'm 5'4ish also.  I got the booty as well gals...10's were more for the butt and thighs and the waist was always too big.  Now my 10's fall off.  YEAY!  Still sportin the 8's though at 147 but they're much more loose and I no longer have to do the squat dance to stretch them out before I wear them in public if ya know what I mean.  ;)

Lol, I know exactly what you mean! I can remember even spraying my pants with water my pants to stretch them out so they weren't so tight.  Oh the things we girls do..

Yeah...my favorite was wearing the pants I wanted to wear out on Friday night around the house on Wednesday and Thursday to stretch them out rather than wearing my sweats when I got home!  It's kinda nice not having to do that anymore!  I don't have to plan my outfits for the weekend on Wednesday!  LOL!!!

New Members Choosing activity level??? May 06 2009
17:55 (UTC)

You and I seem to have similar schedules.  I work from home, do some light house work daily and sit at the computer the rest of the day other than my workouts and walking the dogs.  What I do is set it to sedentary and add my workouts only unless I've done some heavy duty cleaning...then I'll add that in too.  I've been consistently losing 1 to 2 pounds per week doing that.  I like it this way because I don't feel like I'm over estimating my burn and it gives you a little cushion.

edit: Oh, and FYI,  I do one hour to 90 minutes of cardio 6 days per week (on my hour days, it's intervals for 40 mins with 10 minute warm up and 10 minute cool down and on my 90 minute days I do a pyramid intensity kinda thing).  I lift heavy weights three days per week.

OMG...I ate 4...yes FOUR Pepridge farms chocolate chip cookies (the big sausalito milk chocolate macadamia ones)  last night...AND a snack size bag of cheddar cheese/sour cream potato chips.  At first I couldn't understand why on earth I was having such horrible cravings then I looked at the calendar.  I'm due my totm next week.  Did I feel horrible at first, yeah...but after I thought about it I realized that is the worst I have been in three weeks and damn it, sometimes you just need those chocolate chip cookies followed by that salty crunch!!

Sorry...rant over.

For me it's popcorn.  It always smells so freaking good and when I go to eat it, it's just never as yummy as I thought it would be.  I gotta agree with you on fried chicken too...I'm not a vegetarian, and for me it never tastes as good as it smells.

I asked my husband this exact same question last night!! I'm down 10 pounds (if you look at my profile it says 9, but that's because I won't actually move my weight down until I hold it at 10 pounds for a whole week...a superstitious thing), all of my jeans are big on me, even my tops and my belts are two notches in the right direction...but I measure myself on my weigh in day and I'm not seeing much of a change in my measurements!  I guess it shouldn't matter much.  The scale is moving, my clothes are bigger and I am seeing and feeling differences in my waste, butt and upper body (not so much in the thigh area DAMMIT!!).  Glad to know Im not alone.  We still rock though!  Go us!!!

Weight Loss drinking tonight, need advice!! Apr 23 2009

Hey, cs17!  I can tell you just go out, have fun and don't worry about it!!  Unless you drink 3500 calories over what you normally need to maintain your weight, you aren't going to gain a pound of anything but water weight.

Last weekend I went to Atlanta to visit my brother.  It was his birthday and both nights I was there we ate plenty and drank plenty.  I worked out all weekend, we also did some hiking...but then we went wine tasting...so it was a lot of drinking for me (I don't drink much either).  I was terrified to get on the scale Monday morning...but I didn't gain an ounce.  Better yet, I weighed myself today and I went down another pound and a half for the week!  Whatever you do gain if anything, it's gonna be mostly water.  Eat normally today, you did your work out, have a glass of water in between each drink and don't worry about it.

You gotta live a little.  You aren't doing it every day or even every week so just don't worry about it, be safe, and try not to get too wasted so you're hung over and just want to eat junk all day tomorrow.  Drink lots of water.  Have fun!!

Weight Loss Green Tea??? Does it work? Apr 23 2009
17:46 (UTC)
8

I have to say no.  I drink green tea (the good stuff, whole leaf, not pre bagged, not flavored) every day, at least 2 to 4 cups daily.  I've been drinking it for YEARS (going on 5 now).  I only started losing weight when I started counting calories and exercising a minimum of 5 days a week.  If it helped boost metabolism, it didn't do enough for me to notice a bit of difference until I started making the effort to be healthier all around.  Of course I didn't start drinking it for the metabolism boost, it was more to get myself off of coffee.  But I never noticed a difference.
