Original Post by mook20707:

Start taking St. Johns Wort.  It's a natural mood balancer.  Less stress, less wigouts.  Less stress equals more sleep.  More sleep equals less

Do not do this if you are taking birth control pills as your only anti contraceptive!  St. John's Wort reacts with it, lowering it's effectiveness.  You don't want that stress on top of everything else.  You should do something for the stress, though.  Lavender scents can help, same with peppermint.

Sounds like you need some you time (this can include others, of course).  Take a day off from studying, plan some activity that will get you out (maybe a picnic, with healthy things already planned.  This also helps prevent a binge, since when the basket is empty, it's empty).  Unless you need your cell, turn it off.  Pretend like you are disappearing from the things that are stressing you out for a while, and take the time to recharge.  When I was in college this is what prevented me from just going insane.

I had a mild form on two separate occations, and from what my doctors have told me, you need rest.  I luckily never needed surgery, and the torsion (and cysts) went away on their own, but with just the cysts I still needed several weeks of rest.

Everyone is different, though.  I like what someone above said; call your hospital, and ask a nurse, or another person who can help you.  They might have the answer.  If they tell you that you should wait until your followup, you really should follow their advice.  After that much pain in that area, you might not feel something less painful, which could end up being a big deal.

It depends on what you are adding.  I've had to go through and modify sometimes, but it's usually not that bad.  You can also add ingredients by their ID number (it explains this when you click on how to use) but you have to make sure to use the right units when doing this (if the ingredient only knows grams, and you try to say X ounces, it will give an "unknown" flag of yellow).  It takes a little to get used to using it, but I found it to be worth the effort, since I make so many of my recipes often (and therefore can just click "add to food log" from my recipe tab, instead of doing it all over again).

Sorry if I'm not being clear.  It's hard for me to explain things when I can't use props.

But yeah, it can be pretty accurate.

This site doesn't have a lot of ethnic foods, true, but at least it has the ability to add a recipe, and find the calories in it! (something a lot of sites don't have).  I use this feature all the time when I'm making food that I know will not be in the database.  Sometimes you have to add ingrediants manually (or not add them to the recipe, and add them seperately when adding servings), but at least you can get the majority of it in one go.

Keep up the good work, and remember to drink plenty of water! (and watch your calories, but that's a given).  The same thing happened to me, and it was mostly water weight, but that's still weight lose! ^_^

I would say to include something resistance-y as well, like weights or a resistance band, since it will help prevent muscle lose.

Good luck!

Foods How many calories in Costco frozen yogurt? Apr 10 2009

From my experience with Costco frozen yogurt, the center is usually a cone of air from their swirling technique, which fills in when it starts to melt.  The only way I know there's air is my husband helped me eat one once, and we got to the center before it could start melting.

The 90 calories per 1/2 a cup seems about right, since the yogurt is fat free.

I have 34DDs, but they match my frame, so there's no complaining from me (tall, with broader shoulders.  The person who fitted me got a confused look, and retook the measurements 3 times, kek).  The only thing that annoys me is finding clothing.  The worst is sports bras.  I can deal with looser shirts, I can take a dress that needs to be altered, but those damn sports bras are always too tight, or too loose.  Good thing I found a brand that works (Wacoal) or I would be even more pissed ^_^.

That just looks like a resistance band and some furniture to me...

If you want to add something beyond free weights to your routine, try adding a resistance band. (Plain one, the type that's around 10-20 at Target).  This works really well with exercises like squats, french presses, tricep... well, just about anything, if you get creative.  They don't take up a lot of space, and you can use furniture around your house with them.  Adding a resistance band with weights makes a killer workout, since you have more resistance the entire time (like for benches, instead of just really feeling it when extending your arm, you also have resistance bringing them back down).

Man, I feel ya.  I'm currently unemployed, and unable to find anything (either I'm "too qualified" or "not qualified enough"), and my husband's company cut all employee pay.  At least it was across the board, but it still hurt.  I hope this economy picks up soon.

As for meds, our insurance company just raised the price I have to pay out of pocket by $10 for each medication.  That really adds up.  (At least I have insurance still.  Hope that stays).  Are you using generic brands?  They work as well, and cost less.

I just take mine straight with water, and it's nasty ;P (but fast, and I don't always have time to cook after a workout).  It's okay in smoothies, though.  I haven't tried the chocolate one yet, but the vanilla one straight tastes like... milk... (I hate milk ;P).

Baaaaaaaaaccccccccccccooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnn n.

I have three pounds of bacon in the freezer right now.  Good times.

If they could make a colonge that smelled like bacon (and I mean really smelled like bacon, not that crap that is supposed to smell like something, and you can tell the similarities, but that's it) I would be extremely happy.  That would be my lingerie spray for my drawer.

As for turkey bacon... I can see why it exists, and have at times made a rasher or two of it for a sandwich when I was watching my cholesterol (heart problems run in my family, so better to start watching when I'm young), but regular pig bacon is so much better.

Weight Loss I am so ANGRY at B.S. DIETING ADVICE!!!!! Apr 05 2009

This reminds me of my brother in-law's friend who came over, and said he couldn't have "more than 1000 calories a day, because [he] needed to lose 15 pounds" while sipping a protein shake.  When I tried to talk to him about this, he said he was "practically a nutritionist" and wouldn't listen to me.  It really made me sad, because I just tried to explain BMR to him.  Just that.  Nothing complicated, nothing about what I was doing, just pure science about how his body needed more than that just based on BMR...

I agree with what others have said about quick fixes, as well.  My mom had gastric bypass surgery years ago, and got mad that her fat didn't just disappear.  She didn't change her diet, she still drank soda (man, that caused a fight), and she eventually stretched out her stomach again, so it's like she never had the surgery in the first place.  Some people just will never listen that they didn't gain overnight, they aren't going to lose overnight.

Weight Loss Trying to get back into the gym - strict workout schedule? Apr 02 2009
02:11 (UTC)
7

I don't have a gym anywhere near me, so have to work out at home, but I keep a strict schedule.  If I have to miss for any reason, I force myself to make it up (for instance, this Friday I can't do my weights, so I'm going to make it up on Saturday, which still leaves me a day to rest before weights again).  Some people can get away with a more fluid approach, but that's what made me stop exercising in the first place, so it's not for me.

Oh, and if you were wondering:

Mon - weights (circuit style, so cardio in there), 30 minutes cardio

Tues - cardio (60-90minutes)

Wed - weights (circuit style, so cardio in there), 30 minutes cardio

Thurs- cardio (60-90minutes)

Fri - weights (circuit style, so cardio in there), 30 minutes cardio

Sat - cardio (60-90minutes)

Sun - rest (or light cardio, less than an hour)

If I try the every other day approach, it becomes "well, I can't do it today, but I can just miss it this once, and have two days between" and it gets out of control.  A strict each day planned out approach also means (for me) that I know how to fit it into my schedule, since it's always the same days.

Upper body weights are good.  I do ab workouts also when my knee hurts (genetic problem).  Like another person said, try an ankle brace.  I wear a knee brace when I'm exercising (one meant for this purpose), and it has really helped.

You might want to look at what exercise is causing you to sprain your ankle.  You might be doing the move incorrectly, and causing extra strain (or if it's running, maybe look into shoes that will help).

Unfortunately each of my sprains has been due to me falling/being a klutz. Last night, I was going down a big flight of stairs and I missed the last step. D'oh :(

Ouch!  My husband's a klutz sometimes,  but he's invincible (the only time I saw him bruse was when he ran into a sharp metal corner on his bike).  A brace would definitely help, and hopefully it will go away quickly.

Good luck!

A piece of 70% or higher chocolate is good times.  You only need a little.

Fat-free chocolate pudding is also a great choice.

Dark chocolate covered goji berries are great.

I like those Dove chocoalte individually wrapped squares for my milk chocolate fix.

I have 2 myself, and my husband has one of his own (I have a large blue one, and a medium silver.  His is silver).  They are expensive, but I have been using mine for years, and they show no sign of, well, anything.  I still need to buy a flip top for mine, since it can get annoying to screw the cap every time I want a sip (like when I'm hiking), but otherwise, these are great.  I modified a cleaning brush to get through the neck of mine, since there was no way I was paying a huge amount for a special brush (it took a few minutes, but it was worth it).

My husband was put under to have all 3 (he only had 3) removed at once, but they had to remove them in chunks because of how they were growing.  He was prescribed vicodin, but only ended up taking ibuprofen instead.

One of my friends just had his wisdom teeth taken out 2 weeks ago, and besides being annoyed at an only liquid diet for a couple days, he didn't really have any pain.

My other friend had his out a few years ago, and had some pain, but he complains a lot, so not sure how much of that is real (he's a nice guy, and we all have negative points, he just complains... a lot...).

So you'll be fine ^_^.  People make out the dentist to be worse than it really is.  Just sit back, relax, and next thing you know, you're good to go.  Just make sure to keep the hole clean, but your dentist will tell you all about that.

My brothers are your height (well, one is, and the other is a little taller), and 160, unless you are extremely small framed, is way too low for them (you know those skeleton people that you see sometimes?  The ones that look like a small branch would destroy them?  They look like that).  Both of them are above 200, and it looks proper.

If you think you need to lose weight, I suggest doing more weight lifting first.  All you might need is a little toning, and your weight has nothing to do with that.  There is a huge difference in a toned person and a non-toned person at the same weight (from experience here.  My brothers look so different when they aren't working out as much, even though they are the same weight they were before).

edit:  On, and you might just be at a plateau, and just need to tweek a little, or just wait it out.  Losing muscle is the /last/ thing you want to be doing, since muscle burns more calories than fat does.  In any case, I suggest doing some weights, to help maintain muscle mass.

edit 2: http://www.cockeyed.com/photos/bodies/heightw eight.shtml

That sites shows photos of people are different weights and heights.  Keep in mind, though, that frame and how someone carries their weight can make a huge difference.

Hope that helps! ^_^

Good luck!

Weight Loss Working out EVERYDAY? Mar 31 2009

On my "rest day" I either walk for 30 minutes (light walking) or do something /completely/ different.

My completely different thing is roller blading.  It works out different muscles than the other days work out, so they aren't tired the following week.  I have been roller blading for years (since I was 11, so 14 years now?  Sheesh), so I guess it's a little different, since my muscles are so used to that, it barely feels like execise.

If I don't do anything that day, I get restless, and my husband gets onto me (kek).

Weight Loss New to the site. Mar 29 2009

Someone linked this elsewhere in this site, and I can't seem to find the originator, but I do have the link.

http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/index1.htm

While a lot of the recipes are not as nutricious as they could be, there are some good ideas on that site.

As previously stated, beans are great.  Canned, no sugar added, fruit that's on sale can be a good standby, in case fruit is too expensive that week (but don't rely on it!  It's like an emergency store).  Costco/Sam's Club can have great deals on things like brown rice, beans, flour, spices, vegetables, fruits, and meats.  Just remember, though; if you can't use it up before it has gone bad, you don't always save money.  Also, shop around; Costco is not always the cheapest.

If you have the time, try to find a farmer's market.  They can have great deals, and you can't get fresher.

If you have a good sized freezer, frozen vegetables are good.  On sale, they are often cheaper, are frozen at peak freshness, and last a really long time.  Also, make soups on the weekend, and freeze into portions.  They fill you up, are inexpensive to make, and can last a while in there.  Just be careful about potato soups, that can become grainy (for lack of a better word).

Other fruits to eat would be grapes, apples, bananas... Really, anything that has a good price to weight ratio.  Also, funny that you like kiwis and strawberries, since they are related ^_^.

Weight Loss I'm really confused, why is it suggesting that I now eat 300 less calories per day? Mar 29 2009
08:25 (UTC)
17

I found the calorie advice thing to be very finicky, and would suggest other sites, at least to cross reference.  It has to do with your activity level, and your goal date.  If you have been losing at your current calorie intake, and have not plateaued, I don't see why you should change what you are doing (that's clearly working).

To give you an idea of why I don't trust the advice thing; by BMR is around 1670.  According to calories advice, with a goal of May 22 2009, I should be eating 1350 calories a day to reach it.  When I started, it said I should be eating around my BMR.  Nothing has changed (except for me losing weight), and clearing eating less would not be a good thing to do.

I currently use a combination of these three calculators:

http://www.phord.com/cc/

http://www.naturalphysiques.com/tools.php?ite mid=64

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm#

Taking the average of them gives a pretty good answer.

Hope that helps!

gi jane's English accent can get a bit thick at times. By back bacon she means something like what Americans call Canadian bacon. "streaky bacon" is the British term for what people in North America think of as just plain bacon (the stuff made from pork bellies). Canadian bacon is a super, lean food so I'd go for it if you can get it.

Hehe, yeah, I noticed that, too.  Also, a lot of places don't have baked beans for breakfast (they might, though, so check!  Often have a lot of sugar, but they have tons of fiber!).  I agree with the poached eggs, since they can't add the milk or oil they can with scrambled.  If they have oatmeal, maybe one egg, a little oatmeal, and a piece of fruit (I would add toast, as well, but I love toast).

Hey GJ Jane: Franks with baked beans and toast = the breakfast of champions ^_^.  It's a start of a good day when I have leftover franks in the fridge.

Ironically, I was just looking for these at cheaper stores last week, and found out that neither my Costco or Trader Joe's sells them, so I have to wait for them to go on sale at my Safeway (which overcharges on them, since they can get away with it).

Really good snack, these, and prepacked is nice (for travel, especially).  Too bad about the packaging waste, though.

Fitness Best way to stretch the calves? Mar 27 2009
01:24 (UTC)

I stretch using a resistance band (since that's what I have, and I don't want more laundry).  To stretch my legs, I lay on the ground on my back.  Taking the resistance band, I push it (like I was standing on it) with the handles in my hands, until my leg is straight up in the air.  I then grab hold of the rubber (for more stretch) and hold for about 10 seconds.  I then tilt my leg "inward" so it's tilted towards my other leg.  Hold.  I then lean it to the outside, and hold.  Repeat on the other leg.  What's great about this way is I can make it harder by holding higher on the cord.  It really helps my legs.
