Weight Loss Undoing hard work with slacking=very little loss, very little gain. A new yo-yo pattern Jun 30 2009

Okay.  I'm still 30 pounds over goal also.  I'm tired of my goal date being like 9 months into the future and then 3months later, my goal date is still 9 months into the future.  I still say I'm better off than when I was losing 15, gaining 20 in 2-3 month periods.  At least it's not this all or nothing life anymore.  When I cracked down last time, I cut my calories AND stepped up exercise.  It would have been better to maintain calories and step up exercise.  Body yo-yo'ed by going on exercise strike and then overeating.  Are we learning?

5'7" female  176 pounds moderately active, age 46.  CC says 1650.  I seem to lean toward a higher average like 1900-2100.  Work out with weights 3x week and HIIT 3x week on weeks when I'm not slacking.  Am general active around the house.

I've gained back this amount of weight a number of times in my life.  Each time, I had lost it too quickly with too much deprivation.  I'm now losing so slowly and changing my lifestyle little by little, it would take a long time and a lot of changes back to an old way to gain it back.  I overeat occasionally still, but it is no longer a way of life.  I weigh once a week, no matter what, because i can get in trouble avoiding the scale.  It helps me to think in terms of taking a year or more to lose 30-40 pounds.  The longer it takes, the more of a way of life the eating/exercise will be.  In the weeks where I don't lose weight, I'm still making many many good choices.  I don't seem to lose OR gain easily the way I'm living now, and that's cool.  It used to be steep loss/ steep gain.

The other thing is I believe I'll need to log my cals and weights for years to come.  It's important to me to stay accountable.   It's fun for me to use the analysis tool and try to A's on my food choices.

That's horrifying!  I would guess that this person has been watching you very closely (perhaps with jealousy?)  If it were a co-worker of mine, I feel certain I would let them know in some diplomatic way that what they did was hurtful and inappropriate and that I would not want to hear any more comments from them regarding my weight.   And who told this person they could touch your body!  Foul! Red flag!  Penalty!

I want to lose weight because I want my outside to reflect the inside (sounds lame - but I feel like im in a body that doesnt totally 'belong' to me - I want my lean & toned body back !!!)

Inside I'm lean, sexy, strong, vital.  I want the outside to match.  Want to look younger than my age. Want to look as good as a woman can who doesn't get cosmetic surgery/botox and the like. Want to feel sexier for my husband. Another 25-35 pounds to go.

I can't picture what you're describing here, but I'm interested in trying it. What exactly do you do? Kick your leg back and push your hip forward as you do what? Do you kick to the side with the leg that's not pushing down a stair?

That looks serious.  I'll give it a try.  I just looked at some Youtube instructions for deadlifts.  Where should I be sore after doing deadlifts properly and should I shoot for the 8-10 reps/3 sets or go to 3-5 reps/3x  for faster build up?

Thanks.  I'll have someone teach me.  I do clean and presses.  Is a deadlift the first half, the clean, only with more weight and to the tops of the thighs instead of the chest?

If you're not caffeine-dependent like many of us are, why get that way? If I were you, I'd use it only occasionally, maybe 1/2 cup, as a motivator IF needed.  Otherwise, sounds like you're getting the full benefit of endorphins and feel-good brain chemistry from your workouts as they are.  Why mess with that?

Weight Loss Having an "off" day...? Jun 25 2009

I try to log my calories everyday for the simple reason that I get to see over and over again that "off" days don't cause a ton of harm.  Plenty of days I've been well over 3,000 or even strings of days at 2100 (maintenance) and no harm.  On hard to count days, I just make my best guess and put it in there.  I use the analysis tool to look at my calorie averages over 30 days.  It all comes out fine.  Don't sweat it.  It's like a new world for me not to panic and hate myself on days I overeat.  It's truly no biggie.

The self-hate and desperation are really crippling and I see it all over the place on this site.  When other people are going through it, I'm sad for them, and I think, "Geez, they've got a ways to go."  But I can get there too.  Fortunately, I no longer believe it completely when I go to the place of despair and total self-hate.  I guess that's really the essence of an "eating disorder" more than the actual disordered behavior for me.

It is objectively insane that a gifted, intelligent, gentle, creative, strong, insightful, loving person would spend a majority of her life locked in body obsession and self-hate and literally 100s of failed dieting attempts , but that has been my story.  I'm entering new chapters now with CC, but can still fall prey to the old horror at my body.  Lately, it's not just fat, but signs of age that can really throw me off.  I'm so sad that my weight loss story couldn't have happened when I was a younger woman.

It's more stuff to process and grow through, but it's very real, very painful.  I have always marveled at people who are unselfconscious and/or positive about their bodies.

June 21 175

June 28 176   Have not formally exercised all week and overate several days in a row.  Hope the damage doesn't look worse in another week or two.

I'm focused now on breaking into the 160s.  My husband and I have been together 7 years but never lived in the same house (long distance relationship) and we're about to join our lives under the same roof this summer.  I'm looking forward to bringing the youngest, healthiest, fittest body possible as our wedding gift.

I'm presently eating 1650 avg./daily and exercise 1/2 hour day (sweat and heart rate up) including weights 3x/week.

Packing up my house to move and sending my only child off to college.  Lots and lots of change, including my physique.

I was just about to post on an experience I had with body image.  I had pretty much accepted myself at my top weight but it involved not looking closely at myself in the mirror and avoiding looking at photos of myself.  It was a truce which was such an improvement over the self-loathing and repeated, failed yo yo dieting.  Well, I've shaped up a lot with weight lifting, changed my eating habits and lost 15 pounds in 4-5 months and, ironically, I'm now willing to look at myself in the mirror at more angles.  I saw myself sitting down a few days ago and was pretty horrified at the size of my butt, thighs and stomach.  It really threw me for a loop because I have been enjoying getting into all these smaller sizes, seeing definition appear on my arms and all kinds of other great changes.

So, it wasn't my size or weight, per se, but a "relapse" to some disordered, distorted thinking.  There's a pair of jeans (now too loose for me) that when I first got into them (and they were snug)a few months back, I went dancing 2 nights in a row I felt so energetic, curvy and sexy.   It IS all about energy.

The image of have of myself in my mind's eye, however, is leaner and fitter and I would like to help my body achieve that.  It's a version of myself I prefer.

I want to commend the Original Poster for having achieved a much healthier outlook than many of us.  It's a perspective to aspire to and live by because it's right.

I was going to post on this clothing topic.  It's funny.  I was so stoked to fit into certain pairs of pants and now those pants make me look fat because they're too big on me.  I'm wearing my son's hand me ups, my husbands hand me downs.  I'm all between sizes wearing stuff that looks awful or comical at times. I'm going to have to break down and hit a thrift shop for some temporary clothes because I still have quite a ways to go.  This is a great problem to have by the way.  I'm not complaining.

Sharon,

I don't have anything of wisdom to add.  Just heartfelt good wishes to you.  I know there is more freedom, youth, and health available to you.  I've only dropped 15 pounds so far of the 50 I need to lose, but it's like unlocking a cage bit by bit and coming out younger, healthier, saner.  I've totally screwed my metabolism up through the years so weight loss for me has been very slow, like 3 pounds a month or less, but I have persevered because the changes I'm making in my life are good ones that I want to keep, not just for weight loss.

Any movement you can manage at all will make a HUGE difference.  Stick with your yoga advisor there.  Sounds like a great place to start.  Don't give up on completely transforming your life, one choice at a time.  A lot of aches and pains I wanted to blame on my age have started to disappear with weight loss.  Don't give up, no matter what.  Don't give up.

Weight Loss 1200 calorie diet.. help! Jun 17 2009

In all my decades of failed dieting, I was forcing myself and failing to stay at 1200-1500 cals. Always backfired eventually.  Always.  I have lost 10-15 pounds in less than a month at least 10 times in the past few years and always gained it all back inside of a few weeks of bingeing.  It took CC for me to learn that I can lose weight without white knuckling/starving.  In fact, I CANNOT succeed with white knuckling/deprivation.  So now, I've lost 15 pounds over the course of 4 1/2 months with no yo-yo-ing.  And I'm going to lose the next 30 the same way. My average cals the first few months were 1500-1600.  But I've had 2 months at 2000 average and I'm still on course.  Don't be afraid of calories.  Be afraid of the stuff that makes you give up and binge.

As a life long calorie counter, I'm here to say this pie analysis is fun.  I'm getting A's now and I love that.  The pie is "rewarding" me for eating more greens and fruits and paying attention to salt, sugar, sat. fats.  Just by focusing on the analysis, I've been less interested in calories and I'm effortlessly hitting lower counts now.  Great change of pace, refreshing and leading me to better habits than I've had before. I'm stoked. The scale is moving down again after a holding pattern and low motivation/boredom.

I just had 3.5 servings of fresh cherries as a post midnight snack (sleepwalker binge?) and ended up with 93 g of sugar already.  It must be a real trick to try to keep sugar under 50.  I'm not going to sweat it though when it's from fruit and dairy. I'm going to see if I can get an unqualified "A" today, just to be cheeky.  Also -- can you believe it-- diet A & W rootbeer has 100 mg of sodium.  So there I was logging in 300 mgs of sodium yesterday.  I knew something would motivate me eventually to get off the bad pop.  At least to think about it anyway.

All day I've been wondering about GI Jane's  "Oh I get A's easily all the time."  Teacher's pet!  Seriously, I'd like to have a snapshot of your week's food GI Jane.  Bet it's delicious, varied, multi-colored and fresh.  Bet you don't drink lots of cans of diet pop.
