| Weight Loss | can i add muscle while dieting? | Nov 25 2009 20:04 (UTC) |

You can't build muscle while eating in a caloric deficit, outside of some newbie gains at first. That being said, you can maintain the muscle you have by lifting, and getting enough protein (about .5-1 g per pound of body weight). Then, once you hit your weight goal, you can up your calories and bulk in muscle. |

| Weight Loss | 5'7'' and 140 lbs with goal of 120 lbs - anybody with similar height/weight/goal? | Nov 24 2009 20:16 (UTC) |

It depends on what you want to look like. I'm 5'7", and have lost 35 pounds (currently at 150). I was the same height in high school, and didn't weigh less than 135 (and was in excellent shape..I ran 5 miles a day, played field hockey 9 months of the year), which is why 140 is my goal (I'm 27). If you want to look like a middle schooler, and not a woman, then go down to 120. But you'll have no figure. You'll be a stick, but if that's your goal... |

Just take at least one rest day a week, so your muscles can recuperate. Also, try doing HIIT on the elliptical, you get more explosive workout in a shorter time. You can do 15-20 minutes of high intensity instead of an hour of steady state, which will end up doing nothing for your muscles. |

To gain a pound, you would have to eat 3500 calories over your maintenance calories. So no. You haven't ruined anything, and you're most likely undereating if your goal is 1300 depending on height, weight, and age. |

You need excess calories to build muscle outside of newbie gains. Protein consumption will help keep the muscle you have, but you won't build any more while in a deficit. |

You are on the low end of healthy now. At your goal weight, 118, you will have a BMI of 18.5, which is borderline underweight/normal. Your fats are also very low, you should be eating at least 20-25% fats. |

Original Post by delaney86: I found the statement Plus, why are they going to the gym only to smoke after or before their workout???" to be pretty judgemental. You don't know why I work out. You don't know why I smoke. So don't worry about it. Granted, you shouldn't have to breathe in the smoke, but don't worry about someone's reasons for smoking. |

I smoke before/after my workouts. I'm not ready to quit yet, but I am getting back into shape before I do. I don't think its fair to judge someone for trying to better their lives, while they still have a ways to go. They have to start somewhere, and quitting smoking is not always the easiest first step. |

If they have insurance, the company will cover some, but not most, of treatment. Likely, they will be stuck with thousands of dollars of medical bills. I have insurance, and still have to pay for some medical care. And, unfortunately, they will still have to pay if she passes away. They still spent money, time, equipment, and energy trying to save her. |

If you've truly lost 20 inches, you should have dropped several sizes. Are you ensuring proper measuring tape placement when measuring? Its hard to measure yourself in the same spot each time, and this can affect your results. |

What she said ^^^^^^
You need to eat more. Lots more. If you are burning 500-600 cals a day, I'd say you need to eat at least 1800, which would net you at 1200-1300 which is on the low side, but should be appropriate for your height. |

As long as your one meal isn't 3500 calories over your maintenance calories, you will benefit from this. I actually take one whole cheat day a week, and I am still losing weight. I'm down 33.5 pounds over 5 1/2 months...Enjoy yourself once in a while, otherwise, restricting too much will make you more prone to binge. |

| Weight Loss | Why do diets not work? | Sep 23 2009 15:43 (UTC) |

What works is making a legitimate lifestyle change. Making healthy food choices, going to whole foods over fast foods, and exercise. Being generally healthy will lead to good things. Sure, you can crash diet, lose 20 pounds, and get skinny fast, but it won't stay off. The slower you lose the weight, the more likely you are to keep it off. Its not just a diet, it has to be a life change. |

I've lived with my fiance for over 3 1/2 years, and I've found porn on the computer only a few times. I just don't think about it. We have a very healthy sex life, and masturbation is completely normal. I would be more freaked out if I found pics of me that he was whacking it to. I joke around and make fun of the titles if I do stumble upon it, because the video titles are so ridiculous. I know he masturbates, because he's a 23 year old, but I've never seen him. So you can pretty much count on your man masturbating, even if you've never "caught" him or found the sites on the computer. If I were to let the fact that he masturbates make me feel worse about myself, I'd be pathetic. Me and porn have nothing to do with each other. |
