Oi, I am part of a south London based regional capoeira group, Engenho da Rainha, and would definately recommend it. I've been doing it for about 4 years now and am so addicted, I love it! If you can't afford classes a good book you can use is 'Capoeira 100' by Gerard Taylor which has photos of how to do the moves. However I would say that capoeira cannot really be learnt on your own, you neeed to interact with other people, it's really the only way to learn proper technique and timing, never mind the singing and instruments for the rodas which are the most important part of capoeira. Some groups do taster classes for free so go along and give it a try. Prices do vary from group to group so depends where you are based. If you're in the UK you're welcome to come to our classes. Axe. |

Thanks everyone! I got back yesterday and managaed to maintain my weight after 3 days of camping, sunshine and rock music!! I took fruit and nuts, rice cakes for breakfast in the mornings and was careful with my choices for the rest of the day with things like grilled chicken wraps, diet soft drinks and falaffels. More importantly I had a fabulous time!! |

| Weight Loss | Trend or actual weight? | Jun 03 2009 20:55 (UTC) |

I weigh every morning when i get up before i get in the shower. The trend line is the one to watch for sure. My weight goes all over the place, especially if i've eaten out or am about to get TTOM.... Looking back at the graph over the 4 months or so i've been doing it is really interesting, there's a definate pattern emerging and the trendline is slowly but steadily going in the right direction. If i'd have just used the weight itself i would be so depressed and would probably have given up altogether! |

I bought a Polar FT60 about 3 weeks ago (arrived 2 days after I ordered it) and absolutely love it! It gives you a weekly calorie and HR target to aim for and records your data..it tells you which HR zone you are working in and beeps when you move out of it. I'm not sure how waterproof it is though, you'd have to check their website. http://polar.fitnessmegastore.co.uk/polar-297 .html?cat=297&query=FT60 I'm from the UK and paid approx £140 for it, no idea what that is in $ though!! |

I was just discussing this very subject with my boyfriend! Lol!! Definately something that makes you smile when you hear it. I like an ecclectic mix, these have been tried and tested and work for me: 'The Prodigy', some of the more up tempo 'Dizzie Rascal' tracks, 1980's pop like A-Ha, Michael Jackson, also weirdly some classical stuff...Vivaldi and Wagner! Experiment and try some stuff you wouldn't normally listen too. For example I hate listening to garage but absolutely LOVE training to it!?!? Go figure... |

Yup, I always seem to get more hungry the week before I am due, and get bloated gaining approx 2-3 pounds. This usually drops off the following week though. Try tracking it in the weight log and you'll see a pattern emerge. Very useful tool! |

| Fitness | Is My Heart Rate Monitor Right?? | May 01 2009 08:37 (UTC) |

Oh dear reading this has just made me wonder if i've bought a piece of rubbish too!!! Before I was using a Sigma PC-15 (approx £30) which had a chest strap but sometimes the contact of the strap against the chest is lost (usually when sretching) and it doesn't give a signal or readout but will pick up where it left off when it the contact is made again. I got a bit fed up of having to continually look at it to see if it was working hence the recent purchase. 2 questions...Have I bought a silly gimmick? Should I stick with the Sigma? |

I just posted this on another thread yesterday.... I've been using a Sigma PC-15 (approx £30) for the past 3 months which gives you readings in terms of time spent in different heartrate % zones and beeps when you move out of them, it's great for tailoring your workout ie...HIIT or just sustained cardio and also gives you a total for the number of calories burned off. It comes with a chest strap which is quite comfy under a sports bra and also displays readouts on most gym machines automatically too, but can affect the ones next to it so make sure you have an empty one either side of you or other people get puzzled! However sometimes when the contact of the strap against the chest is lost (usually when sretching) it doesn't give a signal or readout but will pick up where it left off when it the contact is made again. I got a bit fed up of having to continually look at it to see if it was working and recently splashed out on a Vivago Personal Wellness Manager (£100 on offer!) as it takes sensor readings directly from the wrist and does not have a chest strap/transmitter belt. However, I am using it for the first time today so will have to see how I get on with it! |

| Weight Loss | Wake up at 4:30am for Cardio? | Apr 09 2009 23:39 (UTC) |

I have to leave at 6.45am to get to work as i start at 8am but have trouble getting up to do that never mind working out!! I love the idea of working out in the morning and tried it once but in reality it's not for me. I much prefer to work out in the evening so I eat a good size lunch 300-400 cals and a decent 300 cal dinner. I am usually hungrey when i get in work from work at around 5pm so i have a small snack and eat my evening meal about 6pm. I work out between 7.30-8.30pm in the evening, and have a small snack afterwards. You probably feel tired after your meal because you are not getting enough energy during the afternoon, try and snack mid afternoon or keep a healthy snack in the fridge ready for when you come home! It's just about finding a routine that works for you, experiment and see how you go. |

| Fitness | Emotional / cranky when I work out?? | Apr 03 2009 21:42 (UTC) |

I get exactly the same feeling during workouts sometimes. I kept an exercise diary making notes of days when i feel especially good or tired or depressed and guess what....the days when part way through cardio training i feel sooo tired that i wanted to just sit down and chill always occurred when i'd had 4 or 5 consecutive days of hardcore training. Now i realise it's because my body is tired and needs a day of rest. It's easy to get in the habit of 'needing to do something' every day thinking even just a few sit ups won't hurt...which leads onto a few more etc, but it's important to have a day of complete rest occasionally. When i feel myself getting frustrated and stroppy during exercise and i can't channel it into fueling my workout i know it's time to take a break. I can't relate to weight training etc as I only train cardio and capoeira. Hope that helps! |

Tudo bem gibbit! - yeah i'm in the south east of the UK and train in Putney, Balham and Tooting. If you're ever in the vicinity you'd be welcome to come and train with us. Capoeira is sooooo addictive, i totally understand what you mean about having difficulty making training though...it happens to everyone at some point, life gets in the way Lol!! My group is Association of Capoeira Engenha da Rainha (ACER). In fact we are having our Batizado on 9th May 2009, check out the details on this link: http://www.brazilculturalfestival.org/. Anyone is welcome to come along to any of the events! |

| Motivation | I hate cheat days! | Mar 26 2009 13:49 (UTC) |

I don't have cheat days, i won't refer to anything i'm eating as cheating as the term is so negative! However, I do have days where I don't count what i'm eating but these are special 'treat' occasions such as going to my parents or siblings for dinner, birthday events etc... I usually find that I eat more at weekends anyway but as i'm aware of this i eat less throughout the week or exercise a bit more so it doesn't matter if i go over my limit by 300 or so cals. I also try and make low fat desserts for evening snacks such as sugar free jelly with fresh fruit in it...or low fat mousse. This way I don't feel deprived during the week. Plus my partner isn't on a diet but this way he gets to eat a good healthy pud too. The main thing is don't worry about it, and don't suffer on your own. CC forums are here to help us all

| Weight Loss | Does eating sugar free fat free chocolate Jello make you lose weight? | Mar 24 2009 22:42 (UTC) |

I am based in the UK too and bought a pack of Hartley's sugar free jelly today., I've never had sugar free dessert before so was sceptical it would be nice...but I cut up some strawberries and put them into the mix and divided it into 4 servings. Just added low-fat squirty cream before serving and they were delicious! At only 40 calories a serving they're ideal for an after dinner treat. |

Everyone always shows that clip from Never Back Down...Lol!! Some people think it's real..As much as i love capoeira i agree it doesn't work in MMA. One of the capoeira mestres that i trained with a couple of years ago, Mestre Hulk, won his MMA fight but i think he probably resorted to Brazilian ju-jitsu instead which totally kicks ass. However there's a whole other aspect to capoeira with language, instruments and singing etc..and i find it's not as macho as other martial arts. I went kickboxing for a few years, tried a couple of different clubs but found they were really up themselves always thinking they had to prove they had the biggest b******s! I hate that kinda crap. Anyway I managed to get back to some decent training last night and am pretty happy that my shoulder held out ok.

| Maintaining | Ok, so I've been eating way too low calories, I want to maintain and increase without gaining.. | Mar 19 2009 12:41 (UTC) |

I hope you don't mind me posting on here too but having read the above I am concerened that I may be verging on not eating enough. I am female, 5 ft 6 and now weigh 62.4kg and am desperatly trying to lose the last bit of fat and reach my goal weight of 57kg. To achieve this i originally set a limit of 1500 cals a day. My burn meter suggests I should be eating 2200 a day as I am moderatly active training capoeira 3 times a week and walking approx 3 miles every day. Some evenings I feel really hungry but don't want to eat any more as this would take me way over my limit. Is this hunger just a normal part of adjusting to a calorie deficit diet? Am I eating enough to realistically be able to maintain this and not gain weight as soon as I slowly increase calories up to approx 2000 a day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I regularly manage to gat an A or A- and only really get bad grades when drinking alcohol. Basically i don't eat any take-away food or readymade sandwiches, make my own lunch and snacks with loads of fruit and veg and try not to eat too much bread. unfortunately I love bread but it tends to wipe out my calorie allowance for the day. |
