Ha, I got really annoyed at the Splenda ad for a long time, because every time I'd get on to log my food, I had to look at a plate of chocolate chip cookies! I don't have a problem with there being an ad for Splenda at all; just the stupid cookies! There are plenty of healthier recipes you can use that product in! |

I've been logging my eating and exercising onto CC for 3 weeks now, and I've not yet had a day where I ate more than I burned. I'm nervous that today will be the day I eat over, because I'm going to have to eat out twice! I'm so afraid that I'll make one slip and totally give up. I'm such an "all or nothing" thinker, I drive myself crazy! I'm just going to have to do what I can do, and expect it maybe to set me back a couple days, and keep working toward my goal. There's no way I'm quitting this! I want to keep feeling this good about myself! I was a little stuck at 152.6 for a couple weeks, and I had hoped to hit 151 this week; I've been 151.4 for a few days, so that's exciting. I haven't been doing strength training at all, and it's already Thursday! But I've been doing pretty well getting on the treadmill, so that's something. One more week, and I can reward myself for my hard work! (For every month I stick with this until my husband returns from Army training--June--I am doing something for myself.) I need a new hair cut to go with my new body, so that's reward #1. Since reward #2 will come around the time I get to visit DH's post for his first graduation, I'm going to buy a DRESS (I only have skirts and tops, because I always felt self-conscious about my mid-section, which is now shrinking, YAY!) to wear, so he can see what I've been doing with myself. Keeping this effort a secret is so hard, but I know it'll pay off when I see him checking me out next month! It's great motivation, that's for sure! Anybody else rewarding themselves for your efforts? |

| Weight Loss | "Cheating" with your weigh ins? | Mar 31 2009 14:26 (UTC) |

I'm with Bubbles; hopping on the scale every morning helps me start my day being mindful of my goals, too. I like the weight graph, because using it every day has shown me that there's a rhythm to my weight loss; the line isn't supposed to just go down every day. Knowing that, I'm not even disappointed when I make a little jump up, because I know that I've been eating and exercising right, and I'll see the results another day soon. It's just interesting to me to see my progress that way. When I hit a little plateau, and see that the numbers aren't going anywhere, I can switch up my exercise routine a little to try to break it. Weight loss is all about numbers! Calories in, calories out, steps taken (if a scale is obsessive, how do you feel about a pedometer?!), heartrate, --there are countless things that we measure in this journey, and every one of these numbers is significant to our goals. In my opinion, the more informed one is about his/her body, the better the chance of success in losing weight. All of these numbers can absolutely lead to obsession, and if a person is truly obsessed, counting everything might be counterproductive, but weighing once daily isn't obsessive. Weekly, daily--whatever works best for each individual is good. Period. I have a scale in my bathroom, and it takes 10 seconds to weigh myself in the morning. Because I weighed myself, I have started my day with my attitude where it needs to be in order to reach my goals. If I spend the night somewhere, I'm not going to pack up my scale to take it with me; I'm not "obsessed" with weighing in every day. But as long as it's there, why not? |

Goal 1: Try to hit close to 1300 calories every day (aim for at least a 500 calorie defecit, but no more than 700). Goal 2: Use treadmill for 40 min. 4-5 days this week, try to do some core pilates exercises using Comcast's On Demand programs (at least 3x/wk), and get out the stupid gold's gym cables 2x this week to do strength training. Today: I'm at exactly 1301 calories, after finishing dinner! I know I'm good for the night, since I'll be on the treadmill around 8:00 and won't be tempted to eat anymore. I weighed in this morning at 153.6--a little high, but since it's TTOM, I'm not worried. I'm hoping to hit 151 this week. I'm off to a good start! |

| Foods | I CANT BELIEVE I USED TO EAT THAT moment?! | Mar 30 2009 14:44 (UTC) |

DH and I for a while would order Papa John's pizza every friday night and gorge ourselves. We had fast food for dinner a lot of nights, and that was pretty much all we ate during the weekends. I would order two cheeseburgers, a McChicken, and a large Hi-C Orange from McDonalds, and have room for a bag of candy when I was done. This was a "normal" meal for me. And when I say a "bag" of candy, I mean I would eat from a large bag of skittles, starburst, peanut butter m&m's, whatever I was in the mood for, and eat 1/3 or 1/2 of the bag before putting it away. (I'd finish it the next day!) I have a cookie jar, and DH and I tried to keep it "full" for a while; I don't know what we were thinking! And don't get me started on chinese food! Everything was breaded, fried, and smothered in sauce, and I'd eat huge plates of that and come home hungry! I think Satan himself prepares the General Tso's chicken at #1 Wok; sinfully good! That's the one place I just had to stop going to; there are no healthy compromises I can live with there. Just too tempting! |

| Weight Loss | Obsessed with gum! | Mar 28 2009 22:02 (UTC) |

I'm not a smoker, either. But I really like to chew minty gum while I walk on the treadmill; I probably wouldn't want to run with it (wouldn't want to make myself choke!), but it keeps my mouth cool and fresh, and I don't get that "eew, I feel like I need to spit!" feeling. It also keeps the water tasting nice and cool. Why do you need to quit? Is it too much sugar, or too expensive to keep up the habit of chewing so many packs a day? |

| Weight Loss | Does dieting make you miserable? | Mar 26 2009 12:22 (UTC) |

Maybe you're restricting yourself too much; if you don't allow any "bad foods" at all, you probably will be miserable. The key is moderation. If you can control your portions and make substitutions that you can deal with, then you can still enjoy most of the foods you like, just not all the time. It's kind of funny how little I actually TASTED all those bad foods I was eating. Now that I'm trying to eat healthier foods, I pay a lot more attention to tastes and textures of the foods I eat. I find myself actually enjoying raw veggies with dip (something I would have laughed at a month ago, if it had been suggested to me). Even those "bad" foods might be more enjoyable if you see them as an occasional indulgence, instead of something you scarf down. I used to eat mindlessly; I'd go to McDonalds and down three sandwiches from their dollar menu, along with a large drink. I'd eat a bag of candy in a day, or drink soda and eat salty snacks. Now that I realize that there's a caloric price for those kinds of foods (a cheeseburger = 90 min on the treadmill, or whatever), I'm not so inclined to make a trip out for them. They don't fill you up, they only make you crave more bad foods. If you can get used to eating healthier foods that fill you up--find some that you actually enjoy--it gets easier. Just make sure that when you do indulge, you check the calorie information so that you can eat a reasonable (forgivable) portion size, and try to compensate for those extra calories throughout the day by making sure your other meals are low calorie. I'm sorry you feel miserable--be careful not to be too restrictive with your diet, because that makes you prone to bingeing and quitting. If you really want to lose weight, this has to be a true change in your lifestyle, so you have to make compromises you can live with. Don't give up---give it a chance to work! |

LOL, yeah, make sure you shave! Seriously, though, sweetheart, if you are 15, your body isn't even done forming. Even the girls your age that you compare yourself to feel awkward about their bodies. Celebrate any curves God gives you, because they are a blessing, not a curse! You can exercise to shape your legs, but it worries me to see girls your age on this site, because calorie counting and exercising can be taken to extremes, especially by young girls who feel pressured to look like the airbrushed images of women that are projected in magazines and on TV. If you start on this path at 99 lbs at 15 years old, you'll end up with an eating disorder. If you're self-conscious about your calves, get a pair of high-heeled shoes; they can do amazing things for your legs! |

Count me in! I started out at 160, and my goal weight (for now) is 140. I'm at 152.6 today (yay!), but I'm looking for motivation. Need buddies! My #1 goal is to burn more calories than I eat every day, and to try to exercise more often. Candy, sweets, sodas, and fast foods are off limits for me, because once I've had a little, I binge, and I'm out of control. Plus, they're all empty calories anyway; I want to make this a lifestyle change, not just a diet. Let me know what the challenge will be, and I'll do it!

I've been depressed ALL DAY. Lonely, tired, nothing that piques my interest. I was okay on calories till dinner, when I had a HUGE bowl of spaghetti with meat sauce and parmesan that added a ridiculous 1100 calories to my intake. I had thought it would just bring me to where I needed to be, but I miscalculated by a lot. For the past hour, I've thought about eating candy and cereal, and I almost did, but came in here instead to see if I could find something to change my mind. And now I can handle it! I know I'm not actually hungry---PMS is definitely a factor, too. So I'm going to grab a cold bottle of water and try to get out of this slump. Thanks, guys; I needed this! |

100 calories burned is 100 calories burned! If you pay close attention to your diet, and eat fewer calories than you naturally burn each day, 100 calories can be a significant number. This site can be very helpful, because it aids you in keeping track of what you put in your body in relation to what you work off. gi-jane is right--pay attention to the kinds of food that you take in, as well as portion sizes. Look at nutrition labels. Avoid anything that has "high fructose corn syrup" or "enriched" in the first 3 or so ingredients (there are a few more really bad ones I can't think of right off--help, anyone?). Drop candy, cookies, and sodas, or really limit them, because those contain nothing but empty calories (they have no value to your body nutritionally, and do nothing to satiate your appetite). Avoid fast food and fried food when you can; check out how bad they really are for you by looking up your favorites in the food add-in function. Once you see that a Big Mac wipes out all the dancing you just did, you might be less inclined to order one! And talk to people here--there's lots of helpful advice from people who know all the ups and downs you'll be going through. It seems like it's a lot to deal with, but especially if you focus on changing one thing at a time, you WILL see a difference. |

I have two little kids, and can't make trips out to a gym. Even if I could get out there, I feel really self-conscious exercising with all those other people around. It might help you a lot to invest in a treadmill if you like to walk; it's too easy to talk yourself out of exercising in your present situation. I have a love/hate relationship with my treadmill, but I can watch tv while I'm on it, and there's no excuse for not exercising if you have the equipment in your home. |

Everybody has a "six pack." The only way to get rid of belly fat that covers that up is through cardio and healthy eating. There's an article in About.com about it if you want to check it out. |
