mmm... I love lentil soup, too. And it's easy on your stomach. I've really been craving soup for the last few weeks, but it's SO DARN HOT here that I can't convince my boyfriend that it would be a good idea. :) I'm glad you're starting to feel better! |

I've found that if I've been not running for a while, I have a really hard time running, but it comes back fairly easily once my body stops saying "Holy crap, what are you doing?!" and re acclimates to the activity. It sounds to me like that's what happened for you. |

I'm going to give pretty much the same advice. Make an appointment with a nutritionist to get your diet on track. My bet is that for your (extremely high, in my opinion) activity level, even 1600 calories is probably too low. Also, if you're eating a lot of sugar-free, artificially-sweetened treats, that could really contribute to the bloating you seem to have. I would say cut back on the fake stuff and enjoy a less quantity of real-sugar treats. (Example: replace the 2 sugar-free fudge bars with one regular fudge bar.)
What's the BEST thing that will happen? You will get over your fear of weight, and begin to see healthy weight as one aspect of your overall health, which is currently being compromised, and you will begin taking steps to be at your best health, including your best weight. Good luck! |

Original Post by doobiemcgruff: Haha... It can seem high, if your used to reading about super-restrictive diets, but it is a little easier to follow if you remember that your BMR is the minimum number of calories your body needs JUST TO KEEP FUNCTIONING. Your RMR (I believe) is the number of calories your body uses to support your activity level. Ideally, you want to be eating somewhere between these two, but NEVER below your BMR. Your brain might not know how many calories you need, but your body sure does, and if you habitually consume less than that your body will hang on to every calorie you consume to make sure it can keep running. |

Original Post by twinmama: I find that I prefer the all-natural peanut butter (like Adam's) that doesn't contain any sugar. It's even better if you get the kind that doesn't have any hydrogenated oil in it. (Make sure the label DOESN'T say "no-stir") Also, I would recommend not COMPLETELY giving up potatoes, just cutting back, but ALWAYS eat the skins when you have them, because they do have some good vitamins. I really like doing baked fries- cut potatoes into strips, shake them up with some olive oil, whatever spices you like (I usually do cayenne pepper and garlic- I like it spicy) and maybe a little Parmesan cheese, and bake at 350 until tender and golden brown (I can't remember how long) |

| Weight Loss | How many calories is reasonable for me to reach my goal of about 105 pounds at 5'5"? (as a young teenage girl) | Jul 07 2009 10:21 (UTC) |

I'm not so far removed from teenager-hood that I've forgotton my own body and self-esteem issues. I'm not going to yell at you either, in fact I'm not going to say anything about your diet. I am going to say that since you're having such a hard time dealing with your body issues, and you admit that your confidence is suffering as well, you should talk to your parents about the problems your having and the issues your struggling with. If you don't feel comfortable talking to one of your parents, you can always just tell them that you've been having some problems and ask them to make you an appointment with a therapist, and maybe with a nutritionist as well. I remember that when I was a teenager, you could not have PAID me to approach my parents with something like this, but ask yourself, is it REALLY harder to ask someone for help than to try and fight it all by yourself? |

It sounds pretty good to me. I'm in the same boat, gym-wise, so I'm doing cardio and body-weight exercises. The important thing to consider when cutting calories is that you still need to give yourself fuel to live. 1500 calories sounds to me like it should be okay, but if you want to check, you can go to this website. You should aim to eat at least your BMR every day. Losing 24 pounds in 8 weeks is very ambitious, and might not be the healthiest rate to lose. That gives you an average of 3 lbs a week. The calculator on that website will tell you how many calories to eat, how many to burn, and how fast you should expect to lose weight. I would not aim for more than 2 lbs a week, or down to about 218 at the start of September. Good luck, hope this helped! |

My favorite natural remedy for nausea is Stash's lemon-ginger herbal tea. Just brew up a cup and sit and sip slowly. That stuff as carried me through flu and hangover alike, and never lets me down. Since your nausea seems to be stress-related, it might not be a bad idea to incorporate whatever remedy you choose into a stress-relieving ritual. My favorite is to sit down by myself with a cup of tea or coffee and answer the latest letter from my grandmother. It couldn't hurt to come up with something like that for yourself. Good luck, and I hope you get feeling better!

| Weight Loss | Help with calorie counting please!! | Jul 05 2009 03:50 (UTC) |

I know losing weight seems like a simple math equation: Weight Loss = Calories Consumed - Calories Burned. Which is true, to a point, but if you drop below the basic number of calories your body needs to function, your body thinks you're starving it and will make like a squirrel in fall. That is, it will start hanging on to EVERY calorie you consume, and will make it impossible to lose weight. And, it's true, you do need more calories because you're a teen. Our bodies continue developing through the late teens and into the twenties, so it's important to get enough calories. Bottom line, I'd stick with 1400-1500 calories. A pound a week may not seem like much, but by the end of the year you'll have lost 50 pounds! Patience really is a virtue, even if it's a hard one to cultivate. You want to slowly change your lifestyle to gradually get and maintain a healthy weight. |

| Young Calorie Counters | too young to know if you are bi/gay? | Jun 15 2009 19:32 (UTC) |
36 |
The first time I suspected I might be bi was when I was thirteen. I don't think that's too early to have sexual feelings for women (or for men, either) but it is too early to follow through on those feelings, for the most part. One thing I fear (again, I'm saying this as a bisexual woman) is that the most prevalent media image of bisexuals, especially bisexual women, is that they are oversexed and will sleep with ANYONE. This is a terrible stereotype, and is a dangerous image to show young boys and girls who are starting to explore and question their sexuality.
Also, I believe that the next generation are going to grow up in a great world, with regards to sexuality and orientation. The number of people who discriminate against the GLBT community is rapidly dwindling as the number of people who JUST DON'T CARE grows. We are slowly but surely moving toward a world where parents will all (or almost all) tell their children "someday when you have a boyfriend or girlfriend..." Maybe this is a little over-optimistic, but I'm feeling good today. Happy PRIDE, everyone! |

Original Post by fooledbyfaith: I've been meaning to find (or develop) a recipe for Lara Bars. It seems like it wouldn't be hard to make something similar for cheaper with some dried fruit, nuts, spices, and a food processor. Has anyone tried this or found a good recipe for Lara Bars (or Luna Bars, which I also love!)? |

It's a pain in the neck trying to get out and exercise every day. I know that I'll feel better if I go, but there's just so much other stuff that I need to get done. Plus I'm on my feet at work all day, and really just want to sit down when I get home. Yesterday I justified not running by saying that cleaning the kitchen top-to-bottom was exercise, too, but I'm not gonna get away with that two days in a row, according to my boyfriend. :) So, running it is. |

My way of staying motivated is to pay attention to the little (not weight or measurements) results of eating right and exercising. After even a day or two of exercise, I find that climbing stairs is easier and there's a little spring in my step. After eating good, home-made food instead of sodium-filled fast food, I'm less bloated and less tired. The feeling I get from eating right and exercising gives me more confidence when interacting with people, and more desire to be affectionate with my significant-other. ;) That's what keeps me going until the needle on the scale starts to budge. |

| Health & Support | Feeling cold after eating?? | Mar 16 2009 05:33 (UTC) |
|
Do you get a little sleepy after you eat, too? What happens is immediately after you eat, your body sends more blood to your stomach because all of a sudden it has to work harder that usual to digest the food you just ate. More blood to the stomach means less to circulate to your extremities (hands, feet) which makes you feel cold, and to your brain which makes you sleepy. Some people will notice the effects more than others. So that's it! Funny, but normal! |
