I had a big moment over the weekend when my hubby told me that he could tell my butt was getting firmer.

This happened to me last week! It made me very happy! For me they were only vanity pounds, but when he couldn't tell for so long, it was kind of discouraging. Now I know it shows! =)

I have been struggling with loneliness too. Humans aren't meant to live lonely lives. I just moved to a new part of the world and so I'm trying to make friends and such. There are so many days that I feel so sorry for myself because I don't have a job and currently my only role is as a wife. So then I start feeling like I'm useless as well. Is this an issue of finding self-worth? I'm just curious. If not, then you can probably ignore what I have to say. =P At this point, as a woman, I am constantly seeking love and approval from others. We often try to find our self worth in our appearance, or in approval from our husbands (or boyfriends, or men in general), our jobs, or in our parenting, or anything else. But I have been learning that it's not what I do or how I look that makes me worthy, but I am worthy because I am ME. There's no harm in finding joy in those things, but when you're ultimate worth is defined by those things, that's when they can be harmful. I'm sorry if I didn't make sense. I'm not really good with words. But I hope this helps. I sure haven't put all this into practice yet, but I'm learning and I know that changing habits can be a slow process.

Eating smaller portions...after all, i'm a small person and i don't need to eat as much (or nearly as much) as my husband!

Incorporating more veggies and fruits throughout the day.

Avoiding most packaged foods...especially in order to watch my sodium levels. So I mostly cook from scratch, or buy low sodium items.

Eating more fish and chicken and eating less red meats.

Eating less sweets in a day. Usually only about 20 grams of chocolate.

Avoiding most foods that are high in refined sugars.

Eating when I'm hungry rather than when I feel like it (unless I'm way below my calorie limit and have to eat).

If I know i'm going to a barbeque or out to eat, I eat less beforehand, such as only fruit and veggies.

Healthier snacking...fruit, veggies, yogurt, hummous, etc.

Cooking with little or now fats, depending on how much I need in my day...and I do, it's usually olive oil.

When I go out to eat, I look for healthier entrees.

Usually my salads' dressing is a small portion of a vinegarette or a teaspoon of olive oil with my own spices added to it.

Sometimes using healthier substitutes when I bake.

Exercising almost every day for at least a half hour (except weekends unless my husband wants to play tennis with me).

Can't say I've ever had a problem buying an apple in China. Or having a problem with disliking it :P Nor do I know why Americans seem to insist on saying they're "free"... no other free country insists on pushing the point, and it's not like Americans are any more free than the rest of the Western world.

ha ha, I am american and i totally agree! so funny how so many americans think that everyone else in the world must be living in chains and can't make ANY decisions on their own...and they must all be miserable too...but if they lived in america, shoot, their lives would be nearly perfect...let's travel peeps! here is a great recipe for carrot muffins that my mother in law gave to me. they're just sweet and don't taste like carrots. even my picky husband eats them! you can make them and freeze them, taking out a few at a time to eat for breakfast.

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup oat bran
1/4 cup wheat germ (optional) 2 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. cinnamon 2/3 to 1 cup brown sugar depending on your taste 1 1/2 cups finely shredded carrots 2 large apples peeled, cored and shredded (if you only have one on hand, use 2 cups of carrots instead of 1 1/2) 1/2 cup raisins (optional) 3/4 cup chopped pecans (or sunflower seeds or other nuts of your choice) 1/4 cup oil 1/2 to 3/4 cup skim milk (1% is fine) 2 large eggs, beaten 1 tsp. vanilla

Ok...so they still make it, but for some reason, I feel like it tastes differently than when I ate it as a child. It's Cracklin' Oat Bran. I remember eating it at my grandma's house. It used to not be as sweet as it is now, I think. Either that, or my taste buds have changed. It used to taste healthier. I used to love that stuff, but now I can do without it.

I've never been a super unhealthy eater. During school, I ate pretty healthy and rode my bike, so I didn't gain much weight. But then I got married and my husband eats things like frozen pizzas. So once in a while we'd split a frozen pizza. I finally decided I should lose the weight I'd gained since we'd been married, and so I looked at the nutrition label on the pizza box. I was astounded to see that 1/6 of the pizza was about 360 calories! And I had been eating half just for dinner! Gross! So now i've only had frozen pizza once in about 2.5 months and when I did, I only ate 1/4 of it and I made sure it fit into my calorie allowance.

Also, when we had homemade burritos and tacos, I would eat almost as much as my husband (or just as much), when he needs almost twice the amount of calories I do because he has laborous job and I can't work yet! So now I measure my amounts and only have one burrito. Either that, or I make a taco salad, which is even less calories. I'm so glad I pay attention to calories now.

like gi-jane said, you can get calcium from dark green vegetables and such. calcium is better absorbed by your body when you get calcium from veggies/soy beans, tofu, etc than when you get it from dairy products.

I bought the original flavor a couple weeks ago and I never noticed a weird aftertaste. But once I realized it was processed cheese (which i didn't at the time I bought it), that kinda ruined my enjoyment of the cheese which is only 35 calories per wedge. =P Plus it gets an F grade for nutrients and that ruined my enthusiasm as well. But I think a lot of cheeses get F grades, or am i wrong?

They probably still make it, but I can never find it anywhere! Crushed Melon Jones Sodas. My husband and I, when we were dating, would go on a search for this flavor. I introduced Jones soda to my husband and we love this flavor. We'd go from store to store until we could find them. Eventually, we stopped searching because we never could find them.

I also just found this thread. I got married in July and realized a few months ago that if I continued on the road I traveled that I would become severely overweight. I am usually 110 to 115 pounds, but I was getting close to 130 pounds. This was for many reasons:

1. my husband is a picky eater, so most of our meals consisted of hamburgers and frozen foods.

2. we have a tight budget and so i felt bad buying extra healthy food when we already had bachelor food like hamburgers in the freezer.

3. i wasn't working out and i used to do volleyball half the year and tennis the other half of the year.

4. I never paid attention to the amount of calories were in any food and so i just ate as much as i wanted. Now I know that our hamburger patties were 380 calories alone!

5. My husband keeps junk food in the house at all times. He is the biggest sweet tooth I know and eats it constantly. But he never, ever gains weight.

6. I can't work right now because i'm applying for my permanent residency to live up here in canada, so i'm at home alone all day, 5 days a week. I don't know many people around here. This makes it hard to get out of the house and do something like workout. Because I don't contribute to our bank account, this is another reason why I feel bad spending more on healthy food for myself or on a gym membership.

Because I have a picky husband, I often have difficulty thinking recipes that we can enjoy together. I usually end up cooking separate meals. I'll have tilapia and salad while he enjoys 2 burgers. I really would like to find some healthy recipes that we both like. Unfortunately, he's not big on vegetables (especially if they're cooked in the Asian food fashion, all mixed together). He doesn't like fish, although he doesn't mind salmon. But he likes it best when it's smothered in a brown sugar glaze and i prefer something healthier. He doesn't like the low fat, low cal versions of anything - like sour cream (fortunately, i realized that if i keep plain yogurt around for multiple purposes, that i can use that as a sourcream substitute!). Anyway, I just had to vent as well and join the rest of the ladies who struggle with the weight issues that come with being female.

But now I'm down to 115-116, so i'm almost there. I just need to firm up. I exercise almost every day, although not for long periods of time. I am eating healthier by adding more fruits, veggies, fish, nuts, beans, yogurt, and such to my diet. sometimes i'll just cook something that's "normal" in the evening and eat my own serving size because throughout the day i monitor my calories. When I go out, I look for lower cal entrees. I am determined to make this a lifestyle and not just a weight loss plan for now. Perhaps some day I can convince my husband to adopt a healther lifestyle of working out and eating healther. After all, his great metabolism won't last forever and there are other health risks besides gaining weight. I just don't know how to convince him yet...
