The Lounge How long have you stayed at a job on average? Apr 22 2009

I stayed at my first job six years, the next one about 6 months (hated every second I was there), the next two around 8 months, and I've been at my current job (which I completely love) around 2 years.

And I've worked in everything from accounting to tropical fish retail.

Pregnancy & Parenting Friend miscarried and now doesn't seem to want to be around me... Apr 14 2009
23:33 (UTC)

I am having a hard time in a (slightly) similar situation.

My stepmom has been around since I was very young, and has been like a real mom to me.  However, she has never had any biological kids of her own (though she has wanted to) and had a miscarriage (around 8 weeks, if I remember correctly) early in life (before meeting my dad).  I am not very close to my biological mother.

Since my stepmom has never had a baby before and I know the topic is painful for her (even if she tries to hide it), I really have no "mother figure" to ask about some of the technical details.  She shares my happiness and excitement over her coming grandson, but it's mainly in the form of prepping for when he gets here, not really being able to help with any of the actual pregnancy-specific questions.

I know it's not the same pain as having a friend avoid you (since my stepmom is still a daily part of my life), but it feels strange to be having my first baby without a role model to guide me through it.

Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnant and worried about work Apr 12 2009

I am very worried about my job situation as well.  I am the assistant manager at a large retail store, and I can barely take a day off without being called with some problem or question.  I have no idea how I'm going to get the work "kids" trained enough in time to be independent of me when I go on leave in August.

Honestly, on a typical day off (one I actually take, instead of just working), I receive about half a dozen calls and/or text messages from employees or my boss.  Half the time, I just go in on my day off, anyway, if only for a few hours.  I'm currently taking my first full weekend off in as long as I can remember, and I have been contacted almost once an hour.

I guess that's what I get for working a salaried position in retail, but at least the company I work for has amazing health insurance and benefits.

I thought it was such a good (if sad) episode.  I agree that Taub crying was almost unbearable, but the scene with Thirteen crying "He's cold" while Foreman tried to keep doing CPR was so much worse.

Has anyone been to the online memorial at the FOX website?  It has letters from other characters written to him, and is pretty interesting.

Congratulations!  I'm 23, and 5 months pregnant with my first (a boy).  Let us know how your appointment goes, and how far along they determine you are.

The last apartment I stayed in before we built our house was on the ground floor next to the hot water heater.  It burst and flooded our apartment...3 times.  The maintenance guy (the only cool employee there, who later quit) said it was because they were too cheap to replace the worn-out part, and just had him keep fixing it temporarily.

Then, when we moved out, during the closing inspection they tried to charge us for water damage to the carpet.

Pre-pregnancy, I pretty much drank nothing but strong black coffee, diet soda, sugar-free Red Bulls, and any form of straight alcohol (or beer).  Now, I don't think I drink anything besides water or pure fruit juice.  (Naked-brand juice is the best!)

I was just cranky because of a quote I read in What to Expect When You're Expecting.  It has a little week-by-week breakdown, and it's very informative (though the writing gets annoyingly cutesy at times).  It was very annoying to read, "At this stage, there's no hiding the fact that you're pregnant!"  Grr...

I wore maternity jeans and a really tight t-shirt today, and while no one actually said anything, I did get that little extra super-friendly customer service while I was buying breakfast that made me think maybe they could tell.  At least Cade (the baby) is still my favorite little squirmy, kicking spazz, so I know he's fine.

5 months now.  No weight gain.  Strangers have no idea I'm pregnant.

Why don't they make 2,000 calorie pills?

Pregnancy & Parenting spotting, but not period? pregnant? Mar 25 2009

Congratulations, and try not to be too scared.  I was a wreck when I first found out and tried to keep it to myself.  The sooner you tell someone close to you, the better.

Let me know if you have any questions or just want to express some anxieties.

I will say that I experienced light spotting around the time I should have gotten my period, but nothing like a normal period around the time I got pregnant.  I realized later it was implantation bleeding.

If you want to be sure, go ahead and do a pregnancy test.  Some of the good ones can tell you as soon as five days before you even miss your period.

Yeah, I've been on prenatal vitamins since the day I found out, and they determined a few weeks ago that I'm slightly anemic, so I've been on iron pills (which make me feel REALLY sick, but anyways).  The extra iron does seem to be helping a little, but it's really not making a life-changing difference.

Pregnancy & Parenting Handling comments about appearance Mar 19 2009

My well-intentioned co-workers keep asking me when I'm going to start showing.  For one thing, I'm only 4 1/2 months.  For another, they know I'm struggling to put on weight in this pregnancy, and I know they mean well (they're all guys, so they're pretty much clueless), but stuff like that makes me paranoid.  I start thinking things like, "Why am I not showing?  Does that mean something wrong?  Is the baby okay?"  It's my first pregnancy, so I tend to the panicky side.

Even worse, again, not meaning it in a bad or sleazy way, a few of them have complimented me on the increase my (already large) chest is experiencing with pregnancy.  I know they mean nothing serious with the "hot mama" comments, but, come on guys, seriously, let's drop it at work and joke about it at the bar afterwards.

I haven't been desperate enough to start on Ensure yet, but I have been drinking weight-gainer shakes from GNC (so gross) at night before bed.

And the doctor isn't really worried so far about the health of the baby, as it appears to be perfectly fine.  It's more that the lack of nutrition I'm receiving is causing me to be extremely weak and exhausted.  And advice from well-intentioned friends and family to "just eat more" is making me cranky on top of all that.

Anyway, I do appreciate the advice, and my next appointment is tomorrow (to find out gender), so I'll see if the doc has any more help for me.

Pregnancy & Parenting 33 Weeks Pregnant and Having Trouble Eating/Drinking Mar 17 2009

I'm in a similar boat, though not so far along in my pregnancy (18 weeks).  I have had little to no appetite and trouble eating because of it.  My doctor told me to just eat anything high-calorie that I was capable of getting down, and to actually drink a little less water.  (She was worried I'm filling up on water and not able to eat because of it.)  On the upside, my baby is big and happy and perfectly fine.  I haven't gained a pound since I got pregnant, though.

On another note, would it be possible for you to visit a free clinic or women's health center?  Even if you have to go somewhere that requires a little out of pocket, this far in the pregnancy I would definitely want someone checking that baby out, especially if you are having trouble ingesting anything.
